I love your flies. I have used the ones you gave me at Sowbug a few years ago.
I’d love the idea of a mini swap.

Hi Chuck

I needed a specific brand, size and colour as I had already used up the first
100yd spool and needed another to finish the rod. Since I started with a
certain red numbered colour by Gudebrod, I had to get some of the same size,
brand and colour. Gudebrod closed down around 8 years or so ago Due to the
scarcity of this puduct, I only found 2 sellers with the colour/size that I
wanted. They were offering old stock and one of them was so old that the spools
in question were wooden. The thicker sizes were available in limited quantity
but not the “A” that I needed. The rod that I was restoring for a friend is a
1938 Hardy Gold Medal - 4 pieces including 2 tips and intermediate wraps every
inch or so. By the time I had finished there were 171 thread wraps including
the splint end ferrules and guides.

Hi Chuck:

Thanks for the offer, but it is the rod wrapping thread in size A that I wanted
and I have now got it albeit at a steep price. I did buy a fairly large amount
of Gudebrod fly tying thread on ebay after they went out of business in
primarily 8/0 and 10/0 with some 6/0 and 3/0 in limited colours. Thanks again
but I am well stocked in fly tying threads.

Re: [VFB] VFB & Gudebrod

2019-11-13 Thread Gary Webb
I used to tie with Gudebrod partly because their thread was very good. And
partly because they had partnered with Gary Borger and numbered their
threads according to his color system. I have
his booklet with all the colors in it. Makes it easy to match an insect's
color with his system. I think some tying materials were numbered too.
So when Gudebrod folded their tent I was a bit disappointed. These days
I'm not so particular about thread color for tying. But wrapping rods
would be a different story.
I'm glad you found what you were looking for.

Re: [VFB] VFB & Gudebrod

2019-11-13 Thread Beer mit
Hi all:

It has been a while and I periodically say hi to members here.
Since moving to Israel a year and a half ago I have fished very little as
fishing here is nothing to be proud of. I had a bit of a fish in france a
couple of months ago but apart from a bit of a fish with my son in the park
lake nothing else has really happened.
My plans include fishing the Sea of Galilee and as luck would have it, I
spotted some rising rainbows in the Jordan river (on the Jordanian border)
during a rafting trip. It turns out that they ended there at some point from
fish farms in the area. Certainly not a local species.
Being so close to Europe it is a quick and cheap.flight to Europe so I intend
to make.my way there. I now travel alot for work (currently in Japan) so I
intend to figure out a way to.take a compact fly rod and 'fish my way around
the world'.

Keep safe, healthy and fishing.

Regards,

Reuven

The rod that I was restoring for a friend is a

us. Maybe I should have searched for "Byard Miller’s Virtual Flybox".
Unfortunantly, since Byard lost interest in maintianing the site, we seem to
have slipped to the bottom of the list or even right off! It it little wonder
that we get little interest from newcomers. It really is a shame.  Changing the
subject, does anyone know or remember when thread maker Gudebrod went out of
business after losing a conract to supply dental floss which it seems was
keeping the company going. I lose track of time but it must have at least 5 or
more years ago. I recently restored a Hardy split-cane rod and used a new spool
of red Gudebrod thread that I had but I ran out before finishing the rod and
had to pay a small fortune for 2x100 yard spools of scarlet thread to finish
the job and repace what I had used. Neville (Nev) GoslingGreater VancouverBC

Hi Nev,

so true, the list has slowed down a lot.
However, it is also our responsibility to revive it a bit.

My fishing was slow this year for known reasons. One of my grandkids took me
out for fishing. Well, this 4 year old asked my a couple of time, if we
shouldn't go out and catch some fish. That's more precise. He is now eager to

Tying season is ahead of us, so I'll intend to stock my boxes with my hoppers,

However, I'm wondering if I shouldn't add something new to my arsenal. For

There is a virtual flybox in Colorado with the same name but nary a word about
Changing the subject, does anyone know or remember when thread maker Gudebrod
went out of business after losing a conract to supply dental floss which it
seems was keeping the company going. I lose track of time but it must have at
least 5 or more years ago. I recently restored a Hardy split-cane rod and used
a new spool of red Gudebrod thread that I had but I ran out before finishing
the rod and had to pay a small fortune for 2x100 yard spools of scarlet thread
to finish the job and repace what I had used.
