I would not presume to tell you who your intended audience/market is or should be, so will judge your service against what you tell me you're trying to do. Not that I claim to be a final arbiter of any sort - I don't have time or resources to really do justice to the job. What I can say in my favor is that I did it, it's up there, and I'll try to maintain it, and, since I host my own videos on DreamHost and don't actually need any of you guys, I don't have any stake in supporting one over another (unless, of course, you want to buy ad space... grin).

			Israeli Consulate launches video blog

The Israeli Consulate in New York launched an online video blog. The
Web site, which went live Thursday, will allow Israelis and visitors to
Israel to post videos about life in the Jewish state, and will allow
others to comment on them. The site, www.israelvideoblog.org,
is an effort to highlight a side of Israel not often seen in the
mainstream press to an English-speaking audience, the consulate says.
"This is a great platform to bypass the conventional media which are
mostly, if not only, concentrated on the conflict and do not represent
the real situation in Israel," said David Saranga, consul for media and
public affairs at the New York consulate. Videos can be posted
in sections relating to food, inventions, music, science and wine. The
consulate, which says it's the first time a government has sponsored a
video blog, sees it as a high-tech PR tool. The site received more than 100,000 hits on its first day.

Great project. Perfect fir for videoblogging (tourism and videoblogging

I love these we were first contests. Only journalists and the government
sponsors care. And Copenhagen Business School opened their videoblogs last
autumn - they are at the least indirectly sponsored by the government. The
CBS videoblogs did not get 100,000 hits on the first day. :o)

[videoblogging] Re: Xacti HD1 NYTimes review

Thanks for all the info!

Low cost substitute? You speak my language!

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, cooper3acd [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Bitrate/quality might be an issue (although I long for one too)...

Here's an article that I wrote in January for a photo newsletter for
www.pixpo.com (shameless plug) that talks gently about some of its
shortcomings (further shameless plug - we'll have a very cool pc/mac
video broadcasting product later in the year)...

 /end plug, here's the aritcle:

Looking for a high performance hybrid camera?

Sanyo recently announced their combination VPC-HD1 5mp still
camera/high definition camcorder that records to SD cards for a
startlingly low $800. This camera is sleek and compact and is the
hottest ticket on many a high-tech wish-list right now.
So, what's the catch? Well, it doesn't come with an SD card, but the
ones that come in the box with new cameras are typically so small
that they're useless anyhow. The only other catch is that it writes
to MPEG4 at a 9 Megabit per second data rate - most current HD (1280
x 720) cameras write to MPEG2 at 20 Megabit per seconds or higher.

So, given this bitrate issue, is the camera still the incredible
value it appears to be? Well, unfortunately we can't answer that
just yet as the VPC-HD1 won't be available until March. Our advice
at this point is to sit on that wallet and wait to read a few user
 reviews before making your move.

In the meantime, here's what a couple of alternatives look like:

 A Step Up?
 Sony Handycam HDR-HC1
This Sony is not quite as sleek as the Sanyo, writes to MiniDV tapes
instead of SD cards and has significantly lower stills resolution
 with 2.8 megapixel photo capture.

Nonetheless, this entry level HD cam looks great from a video
perspective. This Sony almost triples the data rate of the Sanyo,
writing at 25 megabits per second to MPEG2.

With this in mind, the Sony is worth looking at if top quality video
is your top, although the $1800 price tag pushes it a bit past the
 budget of many hobbyists.

 Low Cost Substitute?
 Pentax Optio MX4
If you want a hybrid camera with video features such as zoom being
enabled while recording, a camera like the MX4 might be worth
 considering.

At a street price of around $300 this camera has quite a bit of bang
for the buck. That said, if you are serious about stills OR video,
this may not deliver what you're looking for. While it is indeed a
fun camera, the responsiveness and focusing of this camera are
nowhere near what you'll find in the Sony or Sanyo.

So good luck with your shopping. If you have your own opinion on the
best choice for a hybrid, please e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] -
you might just find your input included in our next newsletter.

BITS is a system service that applications can use to transfer files
asynchronously between a client and an HTTP server.

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is a Windows component
that asynchronously transfers files in the foreground or background,
throttles the transfers to preserve the responsiveness of other network
applications, and will automatically resume file transfers when a
computer is restarted and a network connection is re-established.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8c6ef6c8-2abf-43c7-ab51-e0c53303086dDisplayLang=en

it appears that this is being used more in some products

in my opinion, this is a Blip.tv reporting issue more than anything else
and I really wish they would address it as it's really annoying

it's been mentioned several times in the blip group, but so far nothing
has been done about it

i really wish blip would figure this out (it's fairly old MS technology,
I believe).

 Check Show Advanced Settings

[videoblogging] Re: Xacti HD1 NYTimes review

2006-02-17 Thread Steve Watkins
Well MPEG4 is pretty much designed to give better quality at lower
bitrates than MPEG2. So a MPEG4 @ 9Mbit will look better than MPEG2 at
9Mbit. We cant say that MPEG4 @ 9Mbit is exactly eiquvalent to MPEG2 @
25MBit, but Id expect it to look good.

Perhaps a biger issue is just how good the mpeg4 encoder is in that
camera. From early sneek-peaks, it sounds like it doesnt do very well
in low t scenarios. This is more down to the capturing part of the
camera than the encoder, but the more noise artifacts are passed to
the encoder, the worse it will look.

Both MPEG2 and MPEG4 are not as easy to edit as good old mini DV, and
HD places attiditonal load on the system. Things are improving on the
MPEG2 HDV stuff, slowly, as more apps support it. The same is starting
to happen with MPEG4, but it will be a while till there is as much
choice flexibility in the MPEG2/4 editing software market as there
is for miniDV.

The big plus side of this camera being 720P is that its progressive,
so that gets rid of a lot of deinterlacing headaches.

Cheers

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Server stats question

2006-02-17 Thread André Sala
André here, from TVTonic, the video aggregator featured in Windows
Media Center's Online Spotlight. I have contacted many of you about
having listed your feeds in our directory. The TVTonic client uses
Microsoft BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) to download
video content. Videobloggers seeing traces of BITS in their stats
could possibly be seeing TVTonic users pulling their videos, however
they could also be coming from other RSS clients, such as the RSS
reader built in to IE7 which uses BITS.

See http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam/archive/2006/02/02/522642.aspx

BITS is the technology that Microsoft uses to deliver Windows
Automatic Updates. As Markus said, it is a component designed to
control and throttle background downloads as not to make any large
resource hit on a user's computer.

But the problem, it seems, with BITS is that it makes a substantial
number of webserver requests. If you look at your server log you
might think that BITS is hammering your bandwidth because of the high
number of requests. This is because it is making requests to the
server for small chunks of a file rather than one request for the
whole file itself. Once it has collected all of the bits of a file,
it marks it as being finished and makes the file available to the
user.

We have actually started to see several servers block requests from
the BITS useragent. Revision3's servers (Diggnation Systm), as well
as Channel Frederator, to name a few. Recently we've started to see
some strange messages get returned from libsyn. FYI – we are
contacting the blip developers to see if there is a way we can work
together to ensure their users are receiving less confusing stats.
I'll keep everyone posted.

I hope that clarifies this BITS issue for many of you. Please feel
free to contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you have more questions.

Sincerely,

André Sala
TVTonic Team

[videoblogging] RSS Channel Images

2006-02-17 Thread Michael Sullivan

Hey all.I encourage everyone to include a channel image in your RSS feeds. If you use feedburner, you can include a link to an image from the admin area.If you need help, feel free to ask.I've noticed that some have an iTunes image set, but not the base RSS channel image.
You should definately have both set (if you are listed in iTunes) because other aggregators should not be expected to handle iTunes custom specs (though is possible of course) and if you want your logo or whatever image you use to be viewed everywhere that handles your vodcast, then you should do this.
I was about to add support for iTunes channel image but i was annoyed and right now i decided not to. Instead, i encourage people to complete your feeds accordingly that is if you care about such things as a logo appearing in aggregators.
thanks.- - - - Sullhttp://vlogdir.com

Re: [videoblogging] Finally a video podcast that brings you the freshest in British new music

2006-02-17 Thread WWWhatsup

My question to the technically inclined is this: how does one go about
shrinking a 320MB .m4v file into something that is more manageable for
download and upload? I'd like to 'podcast up' the 30 minute edits we have of
the launch night but they are very large. We are currently making one
available as a .wmv download. Not ideal but the file size is a more
manageable 60MB.

Does anyone else have any experience of creating 20minutes plus of video for
podcasting. Are there compression programs I should try out? Do you warn
potential subscribers about the file size/potential long download in your
summary file or just serve it up? What could go wrong, if, say a download was
halted, for example?

--

I don't think, given the automatic nature of general podcasting, that anything
more than 10 mins is desirable.

Nothing to stop one from offering a seperate feed with longer pieces for those
who want it tho.

Literally millions of people bittorrent, and think nothing of up/downloading
entire DVD's

In fact, in the world of bittorrenting, until the advent of the ipod at least,
files of anything less than DVD (or DivX
equivalent) were considered inferior and looked down on.

Personally, I use the Internet Archive, who actually specifically ask that one
contribute as higher quality source as
possible, when long form is asked for.

And also, on occasion, bittorrent out at DVD quality.

Veoh, and even google, are other options.

[videoblogging] Announcing: The New Media Collective

2006-02-17 Thread Melanie Morgan
Hello Everyone,

My name is Melanie Morgan, and I've been videoblogging since October 2005 (http://nyc-tv.com), and blogging since April '05. I've also been lurking on this forum for a while, and have really learned a lot; some of which I've applied to my newest project, The New Media Collective (launched February 1 2006). The focus of this site is to showcase digital media makers of color (videobloggers, podcasters, bloggers, photobloggers); to let people know—and see—that we're very present in the digital realm.

Although not actually a videoblog, the site will have video on it, as well as other media. The goal is to create an information resource and social network teaching and promoting citizen media, particularly to those who would not otherwise have knowledge of, or access to it. We all need to know and understand these outlets and technologies and use them to tell our own stories—accurately.

If you find any of this of interest, please check out the site (http://newmediacollective.org). And if you are a person of color, please add your vlog, podcast, blog or photoblog to our directory. (People need to know where to find us!) I've also included a resources page with a list of media-related sites. At this time, I'm in the process of interviewing media makers throughout the blogosphere (right now there are 2 up). As we go along, I'd like to add more content in the way of video, audio, and text articles. If anyone would like to contribute content (articles, media, site links), please let me know (melanie [at] newmediacollective [dot] org).

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Xacti HD1 NYTimes review

2006-02-17 Thread Michael Verdi

I read that review and all of the complaints seem like they could be said about my camera - Xacti C5 except that I think the image stabilization is great and the OLED screen is way better than the LCD screen on my DV cam.
This has been my experience. If you use the camera in good lighting and practice with the manual focus, you can get results that look pretty darn good. Not as good as DV but good. In very low light it's completely useless.
The review complains about 1hr battery life. That's what my camera gets - it's a microscopic battery though. I bought a second one so I can shoot for 2 hours before recharging. This hasn't been an issue in the 6 months I've had my camera.
The data rate of this new camera is about 3X that of mine and so is the frame size. So I'm expecting that it will have similar video quality - just bigger. In my opinion the BIG advantage of any mpeg4/digital still camera/etc is their small size. That small Sony HD camera looks nice but it's nearly the size of my digital 8. It's small but not fit-in-your-pocket small. That's the whole reason to buy one of these camera. You'll take places that you wouldn't lug a regular camera around. This is like carrying around a cell phone.
One other flaw in my camera that's annoying but not unworkable is that the audio and video are always off by 5 frames. It's an easy fix to move the audio forward 5 frames but it would be awesome if I didn't have to do that.

No but buying QT pro is the decent thing to do, you also get the facility to make .movs out of WMV's with it and visa versa.  It is well worth the $30.  Trust me.Paul KnightOn 18 Feb 2006, at 03:31, davecircumnavigator wrote: Sorry for the total newbie question here: will DivX give me a .mov file?  I'm on Windows and my Premiere will give me .mov that are twice the size of the AVI file.  That's why on my site we haven't yet offered a .mov option, although Glenn (my partner) thinks he's come up with a solution because some of our viewers want our show on the Ipods.  Any help is appreciated. -David --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, "David Howell" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Are there any comparisons done between QTPro and DivX? Save it as an AVI. Generally the default settings are all fine.
 They

  Export
   Video and audio
   Entire Timeline

  Filetype
   Microsoft DV AVI

  Video Settings
   Compressor: DV NTSC
   Frame size: 720h 480v (0.900)

   Sample type: 16-bit

  Import AVI.

  Then File, Export.

The settings you want to use are the following...

  Under Video
  Settings
  - Compression Type - H.264
  - Motion - Frame Rate: 15FPS
  - Key Frames - Automatic
  - Data Rate - Restrict to 355kbits/sec
  - Optimized for Streaming
  - Compressor - Encoding - Best Quality (Multi Pass)

  Filter
  - No filters

  Size
  Custom Size - Width 320 Height 240

  Now onto the Sound
  Settings
  - Format - AAC
  - Channels - Stereo (L R)
  - Rate - 22.050kHz
  Check Show Advanced Settings
  AAC Encoder Settings:
  - Bit Rate Format - Constant Bit Rate
  - Target Bit Rate - 32kbps
  - Precedence - Sample Rate
  - Quality - Better

That should give you the following...

Just out of curiousity, why not use BitTorrent, Gnutella, dijjer, or some other P2P technolofgy to distrbute your vlog?
Because such a small percentage of the general population knows how to use those things. Until it becomes seamless, where you just click the link and the video plays, those things aren't really that attractive to me. I mean, my parents wouldn't be able to watch any of my videos anymore, which would probably be a good thing. Unless your audience is made up entirely of internet geeks, you won't be able to reach them using these things. Yet. Someone will come up with a transparent usage of BitTorrent. Dijjer is close. But close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades.
