 everyone knows about it now!)

The second piece of good news: we are signing a contract with a
major
Tier One ISP for a new feed that should completely solve our current

it
could take longer if our current ISP drags their feet in terms of
installation. Either way, within a few days, our performance

In the meantime, we're still distributing load across two ISPs at

getting much better at it, but with the amount of content we're
pushing it's tough going. The new installation will solve this

 make things fast.

[videoblogging] help with Ourmedia

2006-02-24 Thread Deirdre Straughan

For my test page http://www.beginningwithi.com/vlog/test.html I have now tried twice to upload my video to Ourmedia. Here was the result last time around (from an email conversation with Pete P):
Okay, tried again, and this time it's looking more promising. I see on the screen:Congratulations! This file has been sent to Ourmedia and the Internet Archive for free hosting and storage. Please be patient -- it should appear soon at this media page:
http://www.ourmedia.org/node/ When I go to that page, though, although I know it's too early for my video to show up, what I seem to be looking at is an Ourmedia blog, last updated Feb 9th. This isn't very reassuring that my video is going to the right place. ??
Umm, but, wait a minute... I only clicked preview. So why did I get that file has been sent message? So when I clicked Submit instead, I got a blank page, and there's no sign that my video has actually been received. Nor is there any error message to let me know what, if anything, went wrong.
Is it still true that I also need to register at IA? Probably I did that many moons ago when I first registered on Ourmedia, but I don't remember whether I did, and I have no way of knowing except to go back and try to figure out what username-password combo I might have used back then. And I thought that limitation was supposed to be fixed long ago?
In the interests of fairness I'd love to get a clip hosted by Ourmedia onto that page, but for the moment I stand defeated in my attempts.-- best regards,Deirdré Straughan

I tried again for the fourth time, and again, after much loading, got to a perfectly blank page with the URL http://www.ourmedia.org/add/videoI am willing to make ONE more try if someone from Ourmedia will get in touch and tell me what the hell is going on.
Even the bug report page needs some serious usability help. I filled it in and submitted, and got no confirmation message - the page just reset to what it had been before, so I have no indication that my message actually went anywhere, let alone when or whether I might expect a response to it.

[videoblogging] MS YES charity project.

2006-02-24 Thread Paul Knight

Hi GuysI know that I probably started this all wrong and got caught up in my own self doubt, but now is the time for all good gentlemen(or women) to come to the aid of the party.  I have started a collaboration with many vloggers both here and in the States or Canada to do a vlogging charity fund raiser.  It started off as a little thing but has grown into a bigger thing.  So I thought that with over 2000 members, I would ask the biggest group for help.I already have the advice of Bill Streeter, the GOD amongst men of lofistl, and the sage wisdom of Bev Sykes.  The Technical Know how of SocialNinja and the sexiness and lets face it, talent of Mskitka. The basic loveliness of Kitykity, and the awesome editing talent which is Conrad Slater, amongst others to create the first vlogging charity thingy mi jig, for the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre.  But I need more people, read on if you are at all interested.I am looking for more people to join the project, you must be able bodied.  It needs be 30 seconds long, the size of an advert.  To highlight and entertain and educate as to what Multiple Sclerosis can do to an able bodied person.  Because you can't catch MS and No-one is born with it.  I have the backing of the Charity to raise money in this way, so I am looking for more people to sign up and shoot some footage for me. For all of you who are worried about being politically correct, the use of comedy in this project essentially is to highlight the difficulties that MS sufferers face every day, the intent is not 'wheelchair bashing' at all.  There are ways that we can highlight or replicate the disease in a funny way that neither upsets people or causes loss of face to the film maker. The synopsis is this, 30 seconds of symptoms, from basics to high level "let's call the doctor," kinda HELP!  to be played out by the filmmaker and one other(a friend, a relative for instance)You have two peices of dialogue the person inflicting the pain, the other will ask, "MS" then the filmmaker will answer, "Yes!!"  Then I will collate all the video and put it into a big collaboration and host it on one site, for as long as possible. As for press, I wonder if this project could get a mention on Rocketboom once completed.  If all concerned with the project could get a press pack from Bev Sykes we could also get the local media involved also, then who knows maybe the bigger stations or newspapers might latch on, anything is possible.a list of the symptoms can be found at:Physical symptoms may include any of the following:Muscle and Motor Disturbances including: loss of control of one or more limbs; swallowing difficulties; inability to perform fine movements - e.g. doing up buttons, tying shoe laces etc; Legs or arms may suddenly go into spasm which is often painful, and walking may become very difficult when sticks or a wheelchair may be necessary.Loss of Co-ordination Spasticity including: vertigo; ataxia; staggering; clumsiness (spilling and dropping things).Fatigue including: intense desire for rest affecting motor and/or sensory nerves; dizziness.Visual including: retro-bulbar (behind the eye ball) optic neuritis (inflammation of the nerve); nystagmus (rhythmical oscillation of the eye balls, either horizontal, vertical or rotary); double or blurred vision (a common first symptom); temporary blindness.Sensory including: impairment of sensory perception; loss of feeling, numbness, tingling; different degrees and kinds of pain.L'hermittes sign is an electric shock-like sensation which radiates down the back and into the legs when someone flexes their neck. It is a common early symptom of MS. In itself it is not a diagnostic however. It simply indicates a particular type of nerve damage, for which there are a variety of causes.Bladder Bowel including: frequency; urgency; retention; constipation; incontinence.Speech including: slurring; scanning.Psychological - cognitive problems -  including: loss of memory and mental concentration; depression.Sexual including: loss of sensation and/or lubrication; impotence.Pain is one of the lesser known symptoms of MS which, now at long last, is being acknowledged and treated.Depression and Anxiety can also be associated with MS.Multiple Sclerosis "Hug" or "Girdle" - This is the term for one of the rather strange and weird symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis which can be classed as one of the many invisible symptoms but also as a spasm-type symptom.Symptoms can become more pronounced when the MS is active and may lessen or disappear again when the MS is quiet. In some people, symptoms fluctuate when the person is tired, upset or anxious.Emotional difficulties arise from the uncertainties associated with MS as the unpredictability of the disease means that no one knows when or how it is going to strike. The disease is usually characterised by attacks followed by periods of recovery ( relapsing/remitting type of MS) although each attack tends to leave some residual problems.Their is an

37 seconds is all you need for fame... yeah. :) Well... watch Hari Om if you can. While there are narcissistic monkeys in Bollywood who run photocopy-machines for films as production houses, there's a great revolution going on here in terms of media and films... the number of western/indian-indie filmmakers I have met in last one here in Bombay itself surpasses the number I met when I was living in Bay Area. Rahman is one of those guys who is going to win out this anyway... he's been doing great composition for last 10 years or so now. And of course, now Shantaram is going to be shot in Mumbai... cool J. Depp. stuff. So, future is bright and the Bollywood dirt is going to get cleaned up pretty soon, I feel.  Cheers,de Soumhttp://csfvlog.blogspot.comOn 24-Feb-06, at 5:11 PM, Deirdre Straughan wrote: On 2/24/06, Soumyadeep Paul [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well... since you mention A.R.Rahman, I thought perhaps the (only?) Methinks it might raise more awareness if you have a variety of approaches to presenting this idea.just a thought.. great project thoughbe welld -- URL:

Re: [videoblogging] help with Ourmedia

2006-02-24 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I aappreciate lize the idealistic aspects of it, but when it's this hard to use, I wonder how far it's really going towards its goal of making video distribution easy enough for everybody, including non-techies. The site needs a good usability review by someone not close to the project - clearly, something has been missed. I have a suspicion that the bug I found may lie in the fact that I selected copyright instead of CC, an option that no normal Ourmedia user has ever selected! grin

Hey Susan,

Thanks! We don't have a donation button right now because we're
afraid it'll seem unprofessional... but we're really, really happy
that people are willing to donate :)

I really like the idea of time released posts. As soon as we finish
our infrastructure upgrades, this will go on our development list.
Very nice.

As far as EE support, I know we keep chatting about it, and I have to
work on it. EE is weird in the way it implements the Blogger API, but
we'll address it as soon as we can.

One thing I have been thinking about the past week or six... and this

time-released blip-blog posts? In other words, if I upload a video

up in my vlog until tomorrow? I would like to make 3-4 videos at a
time, upload them all at once, but only have one released a day...
 someday could this be possible?

[videoblogging] Adult vlogging revenues (was Re: echoes of FEM)

2006-02-24 Thread Stephanie Bryant
[Changing the subject line because I'm shifting the topic pretty far
from Diane Duane's juvenile book series.]

Ms. Kitka,

You dress in lingerie and read the AVN headlines and talk about sex
and porn. How are they *not* supposed to consider your vlog to be
adult? PayPal doesn't do any adult content, not just hard-core
porn-- they wouldn't let you use their merchant service if you were
selling vibrators, either. They won't give my husband the time of day,
and he's not a porn star, just a retailer.

You could probably make a living by charging for subscriptions, or by
doing a teaser vlog, then charging for the full-content delivery
(though this might require you to unblur the exposed bits). I'm not
sure how many subscribers you have right now, but adult content is one
area in which you can usually get money before other forms of content.
You'd need to set yourself up with a credit card merchant account, of
course, and deal with all the fraud (adult content is one of the
favorite things to steal or buy with stolen cc's-- get zip code
verification and use credit score reporting to determine trust
levels). And then you'd probably need to get permission from AVN to
deliver their articles, since they are a copyrighted source-- in fact,
you might talk to them about partnering up on a vlog, which would
increase readership and therefore subscriptions.

Other revenue streams, if you don't want to start explicitly taking
off your clothes, would be to do a Ms. Kitka's Featured Products to
discuss your favorite toys, clothes, articles, movies, etc., then sell
them on the site. It'd be a bit of crass commercialism, but you could
make a bit off of the sales to help round out the subscription
service, and if you yourself have seriously tried the products and
evaluated them, you won't be selling out so much as just selling what
you yourself enjoy.

And, of course, you can ALWAYS find willing advertisers in the adult
business, as long as you don't mind working with companies that spam
and use popups and do other things to make the Internet a more
annoying place. Even if you don't do in-video ads, you could put ads
on your blog to get hits from direct visitors.

I don't think anyone, looking at your vlog, would be horribly put off
if you started going more commercial. When a beautiful woman in
lingerie gets on screen, most people almost *expect* there to be a
money angle.

[videoblogging] Re: blip.tv infrastructure

2006-02-24 Thread mikehudack
Hey Sull,

First of all, thanks :)

As far as professional / premium accounts, we'll be doing them soon,
but they're not our chief focus at the moment -- right now we're very
much concentrating on building the back-end business side of things
along with our infrastructure. Pro accounts are coming, though.

As for throughput, we're dedicated to having plenty of throughput for
everyone, and we have no intention of limiting individual throughput.
I can tell you that we're getting an additional dedicated line for
use in serving videos, and that based on current usage it'll give us
150% of our required bandwidth.

  Hey guys,

I'm Mike Hudack, one of the founders of blip.tv. Just wanted to let
you know a few things about the current status of blip.tv.

First of all, some good news: I'm going full-time. I gave notice at
my day job last week, and my last day is a week from tomorrow. In the
meantime, I'm taking more time on blip than I have in the past (since
  everyone knows about it now!)

The second piece of good news: we are signing a contract with a major
Tier One ISP for a new feed that should completely solve our current
performance problems. They promise installation in three days, but it
could take longer if our current ISP drags their feet in terms of
installation. Either way, within a few days, our performance problems
should be a thing of the past.

In the meantime, we're still distributing load across two ISPs at two
different locations, and tuning our process for doing so. We're
getting much better at it, but with the amount of content we're
pushing it's tough going. The new installation will solve this
problem, and we're doing everything we can between now and then to
  make things fast.

If you guys have any questions, concerns, problems, feedback,
whatever, please feel free to call me on my personal cell phone. My
number is 646-827-9773. You can also IM me on AOL Instant Messenger
  -- I'm on as mikehudack.

Please don't hesitate to call or IM. You guys are our business, and
it pains me to have any problems at all in serving you. We have
investment dollars now, we have new feeds coming in, we have people
full-time. The performance problems are temporary. What's not
temporary is our commitment to you and videoblogging in general.
We're here for the long term.

[videoblogging] Adult vlogging revenues (was Re: echoes of FEM)

2006-02-24 Thread Ms. Kitka
You're half right, Stephanie, I do dress in lingerie and read the news
but it's usually not AVN... it's mostly mainstream sources like
Reuters, BBC and the New York Times. These are all stories covered by
the mainstream, I just happen to be sarcastic about it and wear about
as much clothing as someone playing beach volleyball (perhaps even
more!). I agree that my content is explicit (I've used the F-word a
couple of times), but the delivery of it is not adult.

I have no interest in venturing into the realm of subscriptions or
removing my clothing and becoming a porn star/erotic model. I
wouldn't mind doing a Women of Vlogging spread in Maxim, but I have
no desire to become the next Jenna Jameson. I also recently removed
all banner advertizing from my site (Google AdSense, Amazon
Associates), I don't want any annoying banner ads to ruin the
experience of coming to my site to watch the show.

When I started Kitkast I just wanted to make a video extension of my
sex blog which dealt with censorship, religious intolerance and the
government. If/when I allow video advertising on my show I would
prefer that the ads were non-pornographic. People don't keep watching
the show for porn, they watch it for the comedy and tittilation... and
I have made a concious choice never to show nudity (although, in
episode 1.15 I showed nude paintings in an art gallery... nothing you
wouldn't see on PBS!).

Don't get me wrong, I do have plans in the works... but when I first
started Kitkast I had no intention of making any money. The only
reason I would like to make any money now is so that I don't have to
work 35 hours a week at my regular office job and 25 hours a week on
Kitkast. As you've seen in Four Eyed Monsters, the stress can really
hit hard on our personal relationships.

I appreciate your input, but please understand that I have no desire
to become heavily associated with porn. I would, however, love to
become heavily associated with sci-fi... ;)

Kitka

It's really hard to say because of the issue with Microsoft Bits
(see the thread called Server Stats Question). But I do know that
this month I have averaged about 10 gigs a day in bandwidth. In past
months I've averaged about 2 to 5 gigs a day. But actual downloads?
Thats a good question, my server stats tell me about 1200 a day but
I don't think thats correct due to the problem mentioned in the

Re: [videoblogging] example of video in business

2006-02-24 Thread Trine Berry

I suppose if I posted them online they would create quite a nice
narrative although they're short, mundane and in norwegian!

partially it was a convenience thing, my phone creates 3gp files which
she can read in quicktime in her Mail program (we've both got mac's)
and I can literally drag and drop them into the email.

I keep thinking if I am putting them online I have to add credits,
titles and subtitles but I suppose really I don't need to do that.
(seems everyone's doing "raw" footage these days)

But alright, you inspired me, http://snakkemail.blogspot.com/

being the key motivator for subscribers.

   Let's take GETV for example.
They started in November of 2005. Their vlog consists of interviews
  with the
big name people of the blogosphere that they meet at conferences
  or in San
Francisco. Somehow their subscription numbers have shot up very
  quick. This
is most likely because the people who are most interested in that

is somewhat simple reflexive system, if you talk about bloggers,
then
bloggers will talk about you and subscribe to your blog.

Rocketboom seems to dwell in this realm, but at times drifts out

I believe that if someone made a videoblog about hiking, their
  content would
most likely not be viewed via RSS but my singular page views

RSS is still unknown to the rest of the world, most people I know
  don't even
know what an aggreagator is. Many of my friends who have blogs on
  Xanga or
Blogger don't even know what a feed is or that they even have one...

I guess this just goes to show that subscribers is not popularity of
content, but popularity of content within a select group of people
  who use
RSS, therefore the topics that get the most subscribers are the ones
  that
are geared more towards the blog/tech/gadget side of the spectrum...

You know Greg, you and I haven't talked a whole lot... but Biloxi, and

I have thought about taking a few days this spring/summer and driving

Re: [videoblogging] help with Ourmedia

But then you have to fill in the page about the video all over again, don't you? Uh, not to be rude, but why do you put up with that kind of performance? Why does anyone? There are lots of other free services out there that work a lot better
not really. I'm using the upload tool for windows. for some reason it doesn't upload the tags or copyright settings and a couple of other optional settings, so I need to edit them on the page once it's finished uploading and I have the final page url. but I just thought that was the tool being a little buggy. I usually end up editing something anyway once I see the published page even if this bug is not there, just to tidy up how it looks so it's not a problem for me. when I've used the link on the site to upload it seems ok (but haven't done that in a while so can't really say, but I can't recall any problems).
I'm using ourmedia for a couple of reasons. 1. because I really like the IA project. originally I was just uploading direct to IA when in the early days I found ourmedia to be a touch unreliable. but I started using ourmedia again late last year and it's worked ok since apart from a few little things but they don't really bother me. I can get round them. and I like the interface ourmedia provides for listing all my files on the one page. IA does this also - but only if I search so it groups them (perhaps I do have a homepage there but I've never found it ;) so this is easier for linking to the work to tell people where they can find it in one spot.
2. because I think IA will be around longer than most of the other free uploading spaces atm. and apart from a few test personal videos most of my content is archival/documentation of arts/muisc events or projects so I don't want to have to reupload them all again in 5 years. I want them to be available for the artists for the longer term. plus now I travel a lot for my job so can't carry so many archive hard drives - a few dvds is the limit. so I've been slowly uploading things so I can still access them from anywhere without having to have the source material near me all the time. I archive net radio programs and since last year when I got the camera, video. I did a couple of photos but use flickr for that since it became available. I think the IA/ourmedia combination is great for artists wanting to archive their projects. I'd like to see more do it. ( conferences/workshops)
3. because I like drupal sites as I have a few myself so I like to use them and see what features/user scenarios other drupal sites use as I really like the drupal cms and the hard work all the people who work on it. and since they did the deal with IA it ties in perfectly.
4. the selfish/promotional reason - by using ourmedia it gives the work an extra method of being found/discovered by new people who may not have seen the performance or heard of the artist or listened to the show. so people can now come across it via the emails, ourmedia, IA, my site, the artists site, the curator's site. another audience possibility I guess you could say.
I suppose I could add another layer and add to some other free sites, but I'd need more time for that. perhaps one day.Kath--

This is intriguing. I had this vision of walking through a garage sale
somewhere and finding a box of old postcards, each with a little note
scribbled on it.

I like the wavy-ness of the video. As if time is being bent somehow...

Somewhere/time in the future there will be a dusty place in the
internet, somewhere behind an old Craig's List, there will be that box
of old postcards...short videos of the past...each with a little note
scribbled on it.

Re: [videoblogging] fireant reporting in feedburner

2006-02-24 Thread Joshua Kinberg
This thread was also posted in our FireAnt user group, so I'm going to
paste my response here as well
--
Hmmm... I wonder if Feedburner is looking for the wrong FireAnt
useragent... we changed it when we changed the name from FireANT to
FireAnt. We will need to follow up with the Feedburner guys to check
on this

Here's the other thing with iTunes... it checks all the feeds each
time you fire up the iTunes application, which may be pretty often if
you like listening to music. FireAnt does not check the feeds unless
the user tells it to do so. iTunes may also check feeds multiple times
per day, thus skewing subscriber numbers (those numbers are highly
suspect anyhow, so I wouldn't really trust it as a true indication of
how many subscribers you really have. I'm not really sure how those
numbers are generated)

As Jay pointed out, try including a FireAnt subscription button on
your site and its likely you will then see more subscribers in FA.
FireAnt is a little different than DTV and iTunes in that we really
try to keep all your meta-info in tact. This includes the textual
information in a blog entry and especially links. Thus, by encouraging
your viewers to use FireAnt, its quite likely that you will actually
get more traffic back to your site from FireAnt.

Re: DTV... I think your feed, Motion Graphics Chicago was included
on the front of the DTV Channel Guide for a long time, so that could
be why you are seeing more subscribers there as well.

To get more promotion through the FireAnt website, try going in and
adding tags and ratings to your channel the episodes in it. We need
some more help from the community to try to push up content, so it
wouldn't hurt to tell other people to vote you up as well if they like
your stuff. We are also planning to re-architect the front page of
FireAnt.tv pretty soon to make it more dynamic so that it features
more content and changes more regularly. This should also help bring
more promotion to more vloggers.

And speaking of promotion, we could always use your help in the
promotion department. You guys know us, and you probably also know
that we're fairly modest when it comes to self promoting. We don't
really do press releases, and we hardly even promote FireAnt on the
videoblogging mailing list (we see that more as a discussion
environment than a promotional one). So, please give us a boost and
blog about FireAnt if you can. Your help really goes a long way.

We have fullscreen viewing available for Quicktime videos in the Mac version.Fullscreen viewing is not yet available in the Windows version, but it is definitely on our roadmap. Until then, you can view the video at maximum size by selecting the Viewer Mode toggle button in the toolbar (looks like a TV screen).
