Boy. Who pissed in your Cheerios?

Yes, shame on those who don't read every message on this list. In fact, I
don't know why we bother to answer questions that are clearly answered on
the FreeVlog site, or can be easily be Googled, or have been discussed a
million times before, for that matter. Want to know if anyone uses a
Panasonic PV-GS150? Sorry, buddy, that was a week ago. Quicktime or AVI?
Beat it buddy.

Geez, man.

I'm sorry that I missed the previous discussion of this, and clearly this
Andrew fellow of some unknown site called Rocketboom must similarly be a
loser of some kind to also be somewhat surprised by this development.

But thanks to Andrew for passing on the note from Milan which included the
link to Apple's page about this:

http://developer.apple.com/internet/ieembedprep.html

Which was a genuinely helpful post, as was Jen's reminder that there's a
FreeVlog update.

Besides, not taking the measures to properly present your work to your
viewers *is* the responsibility of the owner of the site. Not anyone
 elses.

For cryin' out loud, David, where exactly have I suggesting anything
different? Hell, I was in fact asking, as the owner of the site, how to
best properly present [my] work to my viewers. I didn't say, for
example, Damn Microsoft for screwing us! I asked if it was just MSIE for
Windows or if other browsers/platforms were affected. Seemed a pretty
reasonably inquiry to me.

And I don't think prefacing my question with yipe qualifies as coming
crying to the list, either.

Anyway.

I guess the change will cause content providers to be deluged with
complaints if they don't adjust their code... but I think a fair number of
folks will continue to see the growing annoyances related to MSIE and find
yet another excuse to migrate to another browser. And that's certainly a
good thing.

2006-04-16 Thread T . Whid
Hi all,

I had to deal with this pretty extensively at my day job andI have
seen some some misinformation in other threads regarding this so I
thought I'd try to make it clear. It seems like some of the scripts
you guys are using already helping you avoid the annoying activex
alert, but here's my 2¢.

[1] If someone installed the Internet Explorer security update of
April 11, 2006, they will see this problem if you use embed, object or
applet tags in your HTML. This applies only to Windows, not Mac, and
only to IE, not Firefox.

javascript file, ie, the javascript can't be in the head of the HTML.

What is the best way to have a video web chat with Mac and Windows?

I'm on a Mac and would like to use iChat AV, but how would that connect with
my Windows friend, who has a webcam?

What software would be the best/easiest between Mac and Windows?

Thanks,

[videoblogging] Re: why you now have an error on all your pages

2006-04-16 Thread Bill Streeter
The thing is that this group was set up to help people. I've always
had the attitude that no matter how often a particular issue comes up
on the list I always will answer it if I have the answer. Sometimes
the solutions to the issue changes, and sometimes the person asking is
new and hasn't searched the archives (and if you've ever had the
experience of trying to search the group archives you know it's not a
good way of finding an answer--especially if you don't know exactly
what terms you might be looking for). So in the spirit of making the
group a welcoming resource for new videobloggers I would tend not to
dismiss people for asking a question or bringing up an issue that's
been addressed before. It's something that happens frequently on this
list but it should not be discouraged IMO.

[videoblogging] Re: HDV Cam vs. 3CCD Cam?

2006-04-16 Thread Bill Streeter
The GL2 is an alright camera, but I think it's getting a bit dated and
there are better values to be had--even with 3ccd cameras. I really
like the Panasonic line of 3chip consumer cameras. They're small and
shoot great video. I've shot with the PV-GS 400 and the image it
produces is virtually indistinguishable from the GL2 and is about
$1500.00 cheaper. It's also much smaller which is a big plus to a
vlogger. The XL2 is a nice camera but WAY too big to be practical for
most kinds of video blogging IMO. And I would spend the money on a
Panasonic DVX100 before I would get a XL2.

I'd like to second Bill's thoughts about helping people. That's the point of this group. That being said I don't feel like this issue is solved for people until we can really test these solutions out. I just downloaded all the updates for Windows and IE that I could find and I don't get the active x warning box on anything. I'd love to get it so that I can verify what solutions work. Personally, I don't understand enough to read the documentation and be able to tell if something will work. My experience tells me that sometimes when we think something should work it's not always the case.

That's a good question and looks like from what I can tell from doing
some quick research that it will affect IE 7.

See this:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/31/566068.aspx

I would plan on it happening with IE 7. Creating embeds and objects
via js is a pain to implement if you're not doing it that way already,
but it will be transparent to your viewers in the end. Except those
that surf with JS off of course...

I'll see your sarcasm and raise
you a "tough shit".It's assumed that if one joins this list, then one
reads the postshere. If you arent reading the posts, then why join the
group?
OK...I'll address this issue. I was
told that this is a group for all levels of
videobloggers, from rank beginners to experts, that people would answer
questions and never put anybody down for asking a stupid question. I have
found this generally to be true. I would not know 1/10th of what I know
now without FreeVlog, for example. HOWEVER, someone coming into this group
as a rank beginner would very quickly be totally overwhelmed with all the
technospeak from the experts, to say nothing of the volume of
e-mail.

I don't have a clue about the technical aspects
of videoblogging and posting. I think that, as a senior citizen, I'm doing
well to (a) make a video, (b) compress it, (c) post it, and (d) imbed it into my
journal page and cross post to Blogger. At the moment, my miniDV is broken
and I have no money to buy a new camera--and no hope of having enough money for
a new purchase in the foreseeable future, so I'm filming with my Panasonic
Digital camera, converting .mov files to .avi if I want to edit a movie, and
then converting back to .mov (I was rather proud of myself for figuring out how
to do that).

But quite frankly I am totally lost in most of
the discussions here. Still, I do pick up gems of information from time to
time and so I stay on the list, but I either skip over 90% of the
discussions or set my filter to send them to an "ignore" file because I don't
understand what people are talking about (Veoh transcoding feeds, for example)
and, what with bottle feeding puppies and doing medical transcription, don't
have the time to figure it out--especially when I don't have the money to get
the equipment that will allow me to do it anyway.

So that's why I stick with the group, but don't
read most of the posts anyway.

Okay - I just uninstalled IE7 and it reverted to IE6. Then I ran an update and now I can see the activex error thing. I just verified that Josh Kinberg's pop up maker at embedthevideo.com

Youre correct and I apologize for my curtness. I guess I was put off

know what I was talking about without him even making an attempt to
check to see if what he was saying was true or not.

2006-04-16 Thread robert a/k/a r
Bev, I think most peeps can't keep up with the volume on this list, I know I many days just don't read anything on here. And re the tech stuff, I'd bet most on here, as I am too, are wondering what the extent of this particular Microsoft issue.

Lists such as these are about respect. If someone disses the list or individuals on the list it simply wrong. My statement is not aimed at anyone in particular, dissing simply happens on occasion for whatever reason and it should be corrected. And my definition of diss extends beyond simple rudeness, there are other ways to disrespect the membership.

OK...I'll address this issue.  I was told that this is a group for all levels of videobloggers, from rank beginners to experts, that people would answer questions and never put anybody down for asking a stupid question.  I have found this generally to be true.  I would not know 1/10th of what I know now without FreeVlog, for example.  HOWEVER, someone coming into this group as a rank beginner would very quickly be totally overwhelmed with all the technospeak from the experts, to say nothing of the volume of e-mail.

I don't have a clue about the technical aspects of videoblogging and posting.  I think that, as a senior citizen, I'm doing well to (a) make a video, (b) compress it, (c) post it, and (d) imbed it into my journal page and cross post to Blogger.  At the moment, my miniDV is broken and I have no money to buy a new camera--and no hope of having enough money for a new purchase in the foreseeable future, so I'm filming with my Panasonic Digital camera, converting .mov files to .avi if I want to edit a movie, and then converting back to .mov (I was rather proud of myself for figuring out how to do that).

But quite frankly I am totally lost in most of the discussions here.  Still, I do pick up gems of information from time to time and  so I stay on the list, but I either skip over 90% of the discussions or set my filter to send them to an ignore file because I don't understand what people are talking about (Veoh transcoding feeds, for example) and, what with bottle feeding puppies and doing medical transcription, don't have the time to figure it out--especially when I don't have the money to get the equipment that will allow me to do it anyway.

So that's why I stick with the group, but don't read most of the posts anyway.

When I said clear, I meant in the clear, maybe that was the

Anyway, I am considering not updating our code. Especially if this is
just to suit an older model of IE.

Its getting to the point where I may start signaling out Internet

discuss why there are there.

An easy way to be clear is to say what you mean and mean what you say.

By stating I'm pretty sure you are not clear could indicate that I
am not clear on what is being said. Stating I dont think your site is
clear means a whole other thing. Stating I went to your site and it
is not clear from the IE error is yet another statement.

[videoblogging] help with very slow site

2006-04-16 Thread Richard Show

A month or so ago I spent a really long time changing my site to wordpress.Lots of time it takes the main page forever to load, and/or, if you click on next or previous, or if you click on a category, or an archive month, or whatever, it takes forever ... sometimes, miraculously it doesn't (even if I've emptied the cache) ... this seems to be a problem on my mac with firefox and safari and on xp machines with IE and firefox, so it doesn't seem very browser specific.
... You could help by trying the site and seeing if the same is true for you ... I could also use any help from anyone on theories as to what is causing this ... some contexta) My host is godaddy, I installed wordpress manually, in that there is no one-click solution, and everything, the control panel and stuff seem to work fine
b) I tried the convert from blogger site thing in wordpress, but couldn't get it to allow me to apply a different theme, so I just went ahead a created the whole vlog again (and lost my comments); and changed the date on posting to the original post date.
b) I used a connections theme http://vanillamist.com/blog/?page_id=64 ... modified it quite a bit
c) I started experimenting with hosting the videos myself on godaddy, rather than using blip, and this is true for everything after approximately the new year (but others hosted on blip)
... I'd check now, but I can't get the archived pages to load at all.d) I started trying to embed flash video. The code I use is code that is generated automatically when inserted .flv files in macromedia dreamweaver 8. The flash movie file is one that I download that was transcoded in blip. This is also only true for movies after the new year, and this is one of my prime suspects for why it is so slow, but the pages that don't have this embedded flash thing also seem to take forever when clicked on (
e.g., old archive pages) I called godaddy, by the way, and they said, yep, sure enough it doesn't seem to come up at all, if you type other pages (at this moment), so they escalated my issue to the really smart group and they are supposed to get back to me within 48 hours.
... any help, as always, much appreciated ... Richard-- Richard http://www.richardshow.com

will only be released in beta form this summer. Odds are that the

When I said clear, I meant in the clear, maybe that was the

Anyway, I am considering not updating our code. Especially if this is

Its getting to the point where I may start signaling out Internet
Explorer users and sending them to the Rocketboom Mars website to
 discuss why there are there.

Re: [videoblogging] the activex/eolas patent bug in Explorer

2006-04-16 Thread Ryan Ozawa
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

All righty then... a quick recap and a couple of my own questions.

This affects MS Internet Explorer users only, Windows only, and apparently
both IE6 (April 11 update) and IE7 beta (according to Microsoft) -- though
not everyone using IE7 has seen it, and perhaps the jury's still out on IE7
final.

Both Apple and Microsoft have posted information pages and sample code
(including external Javascript files):

http://developer.apple.com/internet/ieembedprep.html
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/author/dhtml/ov
erview/activating_activex.asp

Stressed is the fact that switching to JavaScript is only part of the
solution -- the Javascript can't be part of the same page that calls it.
Therefore, it seems that Josh's Embedthevideo.com (and thus Devlon's
plugin) and the pop-up solution offered by FreeVlog don't solve the
problem, per Michael Verdi's testing.

But, Enric's vPIP WordPress plugin does seem to do the trick:

http://wp-plugins.net/plugin/vPIP/

Okay. Now two questions, one philosophical and one a little more
complicated.

First, I'm guessing that some folks are seeing pop-up windows for the video
as part of the solution (although again the JavaScript can't be in the HTML
that draws the pop-up). But with all the mentions of folks who might
browse with Javascript disabled... aren't we much more likely to come
across people who have pop-ups disabled? Heck, people get pop-ups disabled
without even asking these days.

I can see why embedding video might not be someone's solution of choice
(especially given this latest development), but maybe the popularity of
pop-up windows is a bit iffy, too. Why not just point to another regular
permalink-able web page?

Now for my geeky question:

I'm using MovableType, and not WordPress, for my vlog. Fortunately, I
think, I built the embed code into my templates, and used the
MTEntryExtended and MTEntryExcerpt to only hold URLs to the movie file,
and the poster frame. I can see how it would be relatively straightforward
to (1.) upload the external JavaScript file, and (2.) adjust the template
code as shown on the Apple or Microsoft pages, dropping the URL for the
movie file (MTEntryExtended) where specified (sample.mov).

But... does anyone know if any of these Javascript-powered solution handles
separately made/uploaded poster frames? If not, could they? And finally,
if poster frame files are out, exactly what will these Javascript solutions
show in the space before someone clicks to load an embedded video?

well pop-ups that pop-up because the user clicked a link wont be blocked, so we're ok there.

I'd imagine the _javascript_ thing can use custom poster frames no
problem. I'm not using Enric's but rather one I wrote, and it
works fine with whatever poster frame I want to use. I've also
played around with Andreas' script and it can use whatever poster frame
you want too.

If I'm understanding it correctly, any poster frame you want can with a
click call a _javascript_ function (From a seperate file) to then draw
out the embed information. Thats how mine works anyway, and so
far I've not been able to produce the problem on my site.

Thanks, David. I hope this is the case. I've helped a fair number of
people in a support environment where they don't get a pop-up they're
expecting, but that's usually because the link is actually taking them
to another page that's expected to automatically spawn a pop-up, which
is then blocked by the default settings on their browser.

I just think that overall, there's a suspicion or disdain of pop-ups
in general, so I was wondering why they're so popular among vloggers.
But actually, this is probably a separate question from the MSIE
Active X thing.

I'd imagine the Javascript thing can use custom poster frames no problem.

The sample codes that Apple and Microsoft present seem to be
customizable to the point where you can pass in additional variables
to be incorporated into the page... but sadly, I'm pretty code
illiterate. If anyone develops a variant that supports poster frames,
do share!

I just have a fear that poster frames can't actually be supported,
because the expected behavior is for them to display in the page
automatically as placeholders... and the issue with this MSIE thing is
that it's requiring user action before anything loads.

But actually, this is probably a separate question from the MSIEActive X thing. I'd imagine the _javascript_ thing can use custom poster frames no problem. The sample codes that Apple and Microsoft present seem to be
customizable to the point where you can pass in additional variablesto be incorporated into the page... but sadly, I'm pretty codeilliterate. If anyone develops a variant that supports poster frames,do share!
I just have a fear that poster frames can't actually be supported, because the expected behavior is for them to display in the pageautomatically as placeholders... and the issue with this MSIE thing isthat it's requiring user action before anything loads.

[videoblogging] Re: To use Archive.org or not?

2006-04-16 Thread Gena
No problem. Here is the deal IMHO:

Certainly you can directly upload via Archive.org but for newbies and
time challenge folk it can be a pain. If you have experience it can
really be a pain. However, after you establish an Archive account an
option could be to use the CC Publisher

http://creativecommons.org/tools/ccpublisher

This will help automate the process of uploading your file directly
into the Archive. But depending on what is happening at the Archive it
might take awhile to see the upload.

Most folks who don't have a commercial host make use of OurMedia,
Blip.tv or other free hosting services. Both had advantages and
disadvantaged.

The advantages of storing it on you own server - total control and
access, no delay in uploading.

The bad side - if the server is toast or crashers so goes your stuff.
This is true with any of the above services but just hurts more when
it is all on you. Also, if you host charges for increased bandwidth
usage you might face the joys of success with the agony of a huge bill.

Similar with using the other services. The advantage is that no matter
how many folks view the video you don't incur usage charges.

But it is harder to have videos removed, and you are depended on a
third party to display your videos. Things happen and you might not
have access when you really need to upload.

My two cents,

Gena

I have a lightweight JS function I use, and fast start works just fine.

The user has to click the poster frame to start the video, but at that
point the embed is created and fast start .. starts ... no need to wait
for download.

2006-04-16 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Andrew, I'm gonna level with you:

You're hosed. Microsoft has hosed you. Me, too. I didn't want a click
to download interface on my videos. I wanted a you go to my site and
click play to play interface. Microsoft has completely killed that as
an option. Completely. In one update, they have downgraded the
Internet. They suck. They're a sucky bunch of sucks and I don't mind
saying so.

Your other option is to use a browser-detect JavaScript to see if a
web browser is IE or anything else, and use an embed for everything
except IE. My suggestion, if you go that route, is to include a link
to upgrade people's web browsers to Firefox in the IE version of your
site. I thought about doing this, and probably will, but am too
frustrated today and took the easy way out.

That said you can do have the javascript provide the same functionality as

You will probably want to modify that code to include an url variable so

[videoblogging] Re: To use Archive.org or not?

2006-04-16 Thread Bill Streeter
You can host on Archive.org but it's probably best to use OurMedia
which is a service that was set up by Archive.org especially for
personal media producers. The one issue you might have is slow or
spotty service. Things tend to take longer to download from
Archive.org than from a paid host. If you're using Dreamhost you
should be fine with them. They provide lots of bandwidth and seem to
be pretty fast. They're my host of choice. Of course if you want to
also upload to Archive.org you can do that too, just to save your work
for posterity.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: why you now have an error on all your pages

2006-04-16 Thread andrew michael baron
I just did the fix. Heres what I did (the following information is
simply reiterated from:
http://developer.apple.com/internet/ieembedprep.html )

#1
First I downloaded this .js java file from Apple:
http://developer.apple.com/internet/licensejs.html

Inside that zip package is a file called:
AC_QuickTime.js

I renamed this file to a filename that I like:
rb_java.js

#2
Then, I uploaded this file to my server. I decided to create a new
folder called 'js' and put the file in there. Thus, the url to access
the file is now:
http://www.rocketboom.com/js/rb_java.js

#3
Then I went into my template and inserted the following code into the
header:

script src=http://www.rocketboom.com/js/rb_java.js;
language=JavaScript type=text/javascript/script

Obviously, you would replace the src value above with your own URL to
the newly uploaded file found in step #2 above.

Remember, the above code must be pasted anywhere after the head and
before the /head

#4

Finally, I went to the part in my HTML where I have the object with
the embed. I cut out the object, everything from object to /object.

I replaced it with the following java script code:

script language=JavaScript type=text/javascript
   QT_WriteOBJECT_XHTML('http://www.rocketboom.net/video/
rb_06_apr_14.mov', '320', '256', '',
 'autoplay', 'true',
 'emb#bgcolor', 'black',
 'align', 'middle');
/script

I actually used widescreen dimensions, 480x286.

 this ... some context

 a) My host is godaddy, I installed wordpress manually, in that
there is no
one-click solution, and everything, the control panel and stuff
seem to work
 fine
 b) I tried the convert from blogger site thing in wordpress, but
couldn't
get it to allow me to apply a different theme, so I just went

 b) I used a connections theme http://vanillamist.com/blog/?

 c) I started experimenting with hosting the videos myself on
godaddy, rather
than using blip, and this is true for everything after
approximately the new
year (but others hosted on blip) ... I'd check now, but I can't
get the
archived pages to load at all.
 d) I started trying to embed flash video. The code I use is code
that is
generated automatically when inserted .flv files in macromedia
dreamweaver

in blip.
This is also only true for movies after the new year, and this is
one of my
prime suspects for why it is so slow, but the pages that don't
have this
embedded flash thing also seem to take forever when clicked on (
e.g., old
 archive pages).

... I called godaddy, by the way, and they said, yep, sure enough
it doesn't
seem to come up at all, if you type other pages (at this moment),
so they
escalated my issue to the really smart group and they are
supposed to get
back to me within 48 hours.

... any help, as always, much appreciated ... Richard

Actually the way Vpip works is that it doesn't actually embed the
movie untill the thumbnail is clicked. Then it dynamically embeds the
movie in the jpgs place (works with WMV SWF MP4 and QT) and if another
movie is activated the script unembeds any other movies on the page.
So it would be imposible to have more than one embeded movie on the
page at a time. It's actually a really nice solution.

[videoblogging] Embed vs. Pop-Up

2006-04-16 Thread Jeff Marquis

Forgive my ignorance, as I'm sure many of you understand this better than I.

Verdi mentioned today his dislike of embedded quicktime movies, and the
issue of scrolling. Is the issue simply that viewing videos via a
pop-up is optimal to the embedded approach, so that you can move the
pop-up window around on the desktop to where you like? I hope
this doesn't sound like too stupid of a question, but I want to make
sure that I'm not missing something here.

I have switched over from Josh's pop-up solution (embedthevideo.com), to Enric's vPIP. I can scroll OK, in Firefox and IE, while a vid is playing - although that isn't something I personally do that much.

I would like to do what works best for my viewers (all 10 of them ), and would like to hear more opinions on what the group thinks is the optimal approach.

Also, I would like to thank this discussion group for the fantastic
support and guidance provided. I really enjoy monitoring the
discussions, and appreciate the community spirit.

See, I prefer the embedded approach, because I hate popups with the
passion of a thousand fiery suns. Even when I request them, I hate 'em.
They are one of the worst interface implementations in existence.

I do, however, have my vlog set to only show one day at a time-- it's
extremely rare for me to post more than one video in a given day, so
the scrolling issue just doesn't come up all that much, and I never
have multiple videos start playing at once (there is one thing you have
to click to play my videos-- the embedded play control... at least,
until the recent garbage).

I think an embed/object solution would be a very elegant way to do
vlogs. If Microsoft hadn't just broken what was already on crutches to
begin with.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: the activex/eolas patent bug in Explorer

2006-04-16 Thread Stephanie Bryant
That's the one I fixed-- the most recent 2 videos (since in an unusual
case, I post twice in one day). I fixed it with Enric's vPiP, so it
should work, and it did when I tested it. Did you refresh from cache?

[videoblogging] Re: Embed vs. Pop-Up

2006-04-16 Thread David Howell
Ditto on the popups.

As for this scrolling issue, I dont see it on my site unless I scroll
when there is a video playing. Then there is a tiny stutter in the
scroll. Regardless, I would hope that people watching a video on my
site are watching the video and not scrolling away.

I do, however, have my vlog set to only show one day at a time-- it's
extremely rare for me to post more than one video in a given day, so the
scrolling issue just doesn't come up all that much, and I never have
multiple videos start playing at once (there is one thing you have
to click

recent
 garbage).
