2006-05-11 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I suspect it's going to play out both ways as citizen video continues to grow. 1. Yes, the medium will be invaded by the usual pretty people because all humans are lookist - part of that is genetic and will never be entirely eradicated, part of it is culture - so there's some hope.
2. However, because we can self-publish, Just Plain Folks can also put themselves in front of the camera and some of them will have a hook that draws us in and we'll watch them even if they aren't pretty. I hope that as a result we'll all subconsciously get used to the idea that you don't have to be gorgeous to be worth watching, and lookism will tone down in the general culture. After all, we already watch lots of famous people who aren't particularly attractive because they are instead funny or talented.

I like to think of this group as a comfortable diner on our way to

There's a lot of these places in Manhattan. I always found them to be
a great comfort in the usual craziness. a temporary oasis.

Matt recently pointed out that only a small group do most of the posting here.
Its true. I have no illusion where we fit into the world.

Yesterday, I guy walked in, posted a help wanted sign, and left.
one of our regulars then pointed something out rather
dramatically...and it spiraled into a huge to-do. I know i did my part
to spur it on. people thought is was funny/rude/dumb that anyone would
argue against the status quo...or be passionate about it.

Yes, there are larger forces at work all around us.
Yes, there are cultural norms that will continue far into the future.
Yes, there seems to be a small group of us who choose to pass through
each day to ask and answer questions.
Yes, most people stop by this place a couple times, get what they
need, and go on their way.
Reguardless of our influence, or lack of it, on the outside world, I
hope people keep questioning the status quo. This group wouldnt have
existed otherwise.

Are we often radical about it? sure.
Maybe unrealistic? you could say this.
But if all i wanted was the status quo, I'd go hang out on CNET or digg.com.

We know that the values of TV are coming to videoblogging.
Due to their enormous resources and Lowest common denominator
thinking, Traditional TV fare will be normal on the web. But I hope we
can continue to make space for people who have a different outlook
...reguardless of how wacky our conversations may get.

as we've reminded ourselves from the beginning, all this is just talk.

Well said...Conversation like the whole video podcast casting
call or the sexism one are bound to stir up strong emotions one
way or another and it has been my experience that the written form
can be a hard way to have a conversation like that...far to
often we read from what mood we are in, and if we are in a good
mood we could see the humor in something someone wrote and not take
it as an attack..but..if you are in a bad mood, or sad,

differently..

Interesting thread though, interesting thread...

Canon makes some great cameras that work well for videoblogging. At their highest quality they probably have the best video I've seen from an MPEG4 camera. I use a Sanyo Xacti and love it because it's shaped kind of like a pistol and holds 40 min of video at it's highest quality on a 1GB card (almost 4 hours of vlog quality video). Most everything on my videoblog for the last 6 or 7 months was shot with it.

[videoblogging] Re: Video blogging story on NPR this morning

There was a piece on Rocketboom with a short live interview with
Amanda Congdon (live in that it was probably recorded a few minutes
before airing). I forget who conducted the interview -- someone named
Bob or Scott, most likely!

It was on WBUR shortly before 8 am and indicated that there were
Rocketboom clips on the NPR site.

A friend just emailed me to say he heard a video blogging story on NPR

[videoblogging] Anyone using GarageBand?

2006-05-11 Thread Philip Clark

I've written a bunch of pod-safe music that I was going to upload in mp3 format for
anyone to use in videoblogs.

Then I had the idea to just upload the actual GarageBand sessions. If you use a Mac this
has some advantages. Since it's only MIDI data, these files are a fraction of the size of
mp3s. You can mess with the instruments and effects, change the tempo and key to suit
your own narrative flow.

I'm using GarageBand 2. Supposedly version 3 lets you import video, which would make
things even easier in terms of setting the session tempo so you can hit certain points.
Does anybody know if 2.0 projects are fully compatible with GarageBand 3.0? I'm
wondering if they still share the same library of software instruments.

The first one is here
http://swordfight.org/garageband

If anyone is interested I could upload a whole pile more of these. Maybe we could swap
some stuff around.

 for the Fast-Start option when exporting from your application;
 there's a difference between flattened and fast-start.

Re: [videoblogging] Sick of the sexism/looking for a ........

2006-05-11 Thread Josh Wolf

As usual, I'm a day late and a buck short...

I don't see the effectiveness of saying things like too many white
men involved in videoblogging, or when Brittany asked us to respond
with a video but dropped the disclaimer, I'll probably get a bunch
of white men to respond, as if the opinions of anyone who happens to
be white and male are not relevant to the conversation.

To me, it seems a far healthier version of Ryanne's complaint would
be something like Not enough women and people of color are involved
in videoblogging. It's not like I chose to be white or male
(although I guess if I wanted to I could decide to become female.)
Yes, racism and sexism are still very prevalent in our society. Yes,
white males probably don't encounter nearly as much of this
discrimination. But, beyond, acknowledging this injustice and working
towards ensuring that I don't consciously do anything to exacerbate
these problems, I don't see quite what the solution is.

It's a problem that we do have a vlogosphere which is
disproportionately white male. But I'm not about to take down my vlog
in order to help with the balance. That'd be absolutely asinine.

Instead, I think we have much more to gain by looking at why so many
vloggers are white-male and what we can do to encourage and support
people outside of this demographic to get involved. For starters, the
fact that more white males frequently have the economic prosperity to
spend the money and time making a videoblog is probably one major
factor, and as long as their is this sort of disparity across our
real world culture we will probably continue to see more white males
than any other group participating in the vlogosphere.

If we can do something to change this issue of disparity in the real
world, I suspect the vlogs will follow.

2006-05-11 Thread David Meade

I wrote up a quick PHP script to check most of that stuff. It returns an array of data so that in your page you can call the function and then test things like:$request['agent']or$request['os']or$request['isBOT']
and a bunch of other booleans I added in. It will even (try to) tell you if the request is servicing more than one subscriber. For example a mefeedia request may be serving many subscribers ... this function will tell you how many (when such information is provided).
Check out: http://www.davidmeade.com/resources/getSubscriberInfo.phpI'll send you the php file, however it would be up to you to then test the values this function returns and decide what to do based off of it.
Example:$request = getSubscriberInfo();if ($request['agent'] == 'iTunes') {// do something here}else {// do something else.}It doesnt do country of origin, but it could ... I dont know how to do it off the top of my head, but it shouldnt be TOO difficult. If its the killer feature you're dying for let me know and I'll try to find some time to figure it out.

Only if we know that it is our outreach which prompted them to
videoblog in the first place. Perhaps, it is simply a situation that
there are more white men than any other demographic who have the
luxury of working at an office job that permits them to spend
countless hours searching the net. As a result of this surplus of
time spent surfing the internet, they were able to find
videoblogging, follow the conversations on this list, and various
other resources and go out and start vlogging.

On the other hand, people outside of that scope, might need a more
intense outreach approach that is not focused on doing outreach over
the internet.

[videoblogging] Newcomer to Videoblogging

2006-05-11 Thread Ian Beaumont

Hello everyone. I'm a newcomer to videoblogging, although I have
blogged before, as part of the EMC Mediablog. I have now started my
own blog called Viewpoint, and this is located at
www.geocities.com/cityprod/. I am planning to do a video version of
said blog as well.

The videoblog aspect is basically down to Casey McKinnon. Yes, you,
MsKitka, or should that be, Comrade Kitanya Irena Tatania Karenska
Allisov??? ;-)

I have been watching Kitkast and Galacticast. I, like probably so
many others, would love to see a second season of Kitkast. Hey, some
outakes from the second half of Season 1 would be nice just to keep us
going. Actually, I'd love you to do Kitkast every week. But I am
looking forward to posting my first video blog/podcast very soon.

i'm one of those white male office workers and good point! (though i cant say it is a luxury ;-)my 27 year old brother-in-law, who makes decent salary as a carpenter and is not using a computer all day, is clueless to things like 'blogs'. It's not that he cant afford a puter and cam (he has both) etc... he is just not a geek (i use that term broadly). More importantly, he has ZERO interest in videoblogging.
We need to remember that just because we are all into this thing... doesnt mean that everyone needs to be or will be or even should be. This includes all races and classes. Financially sound or not... the interest in vlogging is not automatic. It appeals to a certain type of people that is not based on anything more than personality.
their will always be more video watchers out there than video grabbers. those who inevitably would like to vlog and have a need to learn... will find a way to the vlogosphere. i'm not big on convincing people. its a match or it aint. nothing to worry about.

Here at eyespot.com we've been using some Pentax Optio S6 cameras that
record 640x480, 30fps DivX onto SD cards.

I haven't personally tried one yet, but I'm interested in hearing
whether anyone else uses/likes/dislikes it.

(Lately I've been interested in tapeless cameras for convenient
uploading to eyespot.)

I too am curious about the Xacti pistol-shaped one (even the new HD
one but that's overkill for me, i think)

Also, has anyone tried the Samsung weather-proof camera with 2 heads?
A search turned up the VP-X110L. Is it cool or just a gimmick? Seems
like it'd be a cool helmet-cam. There was one at BestBuy awhile back
that I recall was far cheaper than the $1300 that tis particular model
lists for.

[videoblogging] Casting Call for Investigative Reporters - Hotties Not Required - Hairy Guys Welcome

2006-05-11 Thread Monique Danielle

FYI - thought some of you might like to know about this -
http://www.vlogdiva.com

Casting Call for investigative reporters..
Company: Langley ProductionsContact: State: Any StatePosted On: Feb 15, 06
Expires On: Jun 15, 06
Description:
Langley Productions, the creators and producers of the hit television series
COPS, is looking for investigative news stories which are built on
undercover or surveillance footage to profile on a new television show
called VIDEO JUSTICE.

VIDEO JUSTICE focuses on video that has had an impact on the justice system,
law enforcement or in the case of investigative reporting, prompted a change
in local laws or community procedures. The half hour series will debut this
spring on COURT TV.

Most recently, VIDEO JUSTICE profiled WPMI reporter Mike Rush of Mobile
Alabama. Rush's undercover footage of organized fights between pit bulls and
wild hogs has lead to an animal cruelty bill in the Alabama state
legislature, which if passed will outlaw the bloody events.

If you have produced an investigative undercover report in the last five
years which has had a positive effect on your community, we would like to
hear about it.

Video justice would also be interested in profiling news camera
photographers who have caught a crime on camera- whether it is a high speed
chase or a bank robbery-any footage that was used in court as evidence would
be considered for the program.

This is an excellent opportunity to bring your work and your station's
community commitment to a national audience on COURT TV.

VIDEO JUSTICE will consider airing profiles on any news story which features
clear and compelling video from all television markets.

Re: [videoblogging] Sick of the sexism/looking for a ........

2006-05-11 Thread Anne Walk

Perhaps we should encourage more white males to video blog. They seem
to take to it more readily, so our evangelism will be more productive
if we focus on the demographic that will respond to outreach.oh charles. i find your comments so irritating. :Pwell, i posted about this fiasco on
loadedpun and was called out by charles so i suppose i'll respond and watch the fur fly.here's my take on it.women online are inundated with plenty of innuendo (blatant or not so blatant, depending on appearance) and insult (again, depending on appearance) i have studied internet psychology and relations for many years. most women i know utilize chat because they are able to present themselves as the ideal through the use of nicknames, flirtatious language and stolen pics. voice is also very popular. video is only popular (and then, extremely so) for women who are labeled hot.
when a woman is on a webcam, watchers feel it is their right (possibly even duty) to evaluate the woman's appearance and give a critical review. if she is hot, she is obviously a slut. if she refuses to perform for her audience (because, why else would she be on a cam if it wasn't to facillitate someone's jerk off session?), she is called a bitch. if she has been deemed not hot, she is generally called a dog, a fat pig, cow or other barnyard animal.
enter video.videoblogging is all about self representation. we call self representation empowering in much the same way that raunch culture calls a teen girls' choice to wear belly shirts and hot pants empowering. but i digress.
videoblogging is the new media (and by that, i mean the old media in a smaller window). women who are closer to the ideal of girl, chick, babe, etc, happily cash in on their looks. women further from the ideal, face the difficulty of being unable to create a self representation that mirrors the ideal. what to do?
some women vlog anyway, in obscurity for the most part. most won't vlog at all, avoiding the discomfort of a mirror that doesn't return the expected results (an expectation of what it means to be female, according to cosmo, Hollywood, porn, etc) some women get angry and get told that they have a filthy mouth, should quit bitching and should get a sense of humour. it's nice that there are choices. very empowering.
ryanne and jay are right. this topic if far too nuanced to get into in any depth on a list. one of the problems is, when you are addressing a very specific topic, you only get a specific answer. my opinions on this matter, for example are quite broad but, in this context, laser precision for brevity (yup. this is the short version!) doesn't afford ambiguity and degrees of opinion.
NOTE: as an aside, it is not natural to consider women more attractive than
men. it is the result of a patriarchal system. in matriarchal systems,
men are considered the objects of desire. they wear colourful outfits,
makeup, do up their hair, etc, in an effort of win the favour of the
females. that women also find women more attractive than men is a well
studied phenomenon called adoption of the male gaze - something we are
trained on as youngsters with our colouring books and our barbies and
snow white. On 5/11/06, Charles HOPE [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

[videoblogging] PC People (warning: relevant product plug) – Not exactly vlogging but…

2006-05-11 Thread cooper3acd

Hey all, the company I work at has just released a new version of
our software for creating/broadcasting video web sites right from
your desktop. Just for PCs at the moment but we have a working Mac
prototype and will hopefully have something for external
distribution soon.

Anyhow, it's not exactly vlogging software but it makes it very,
very easy for users to create and host a video web site right from
their own computer. It takes care of the optimization, transcoding,
etc and turns your PC into a server of your video, photo and
audio/podcast content.

We are currently distributing for free. We're going to be adding
some hosted support in the future so it won't require an always-on
connection. BTW, up-pipe limitations and firewall issues are handled
quite nicely with some smart caching/proxying on the network end.

If you're interested, check it out at www.pixpo.com.

I'd love to hear any feedback. Like I mentioned, it's not exactly
vlogging software at this point, but it may morph more in that
direction as the product matures (more room for text, comments +
better organization).

In the meantime, have a look at my personal page (being served from
my laptop here at work):
http://liveweb.pixpo.com/robc-work/index.htm

Definitely check out the Loading Ready Run channel. It's done by
some local college guys who have been doing a video a week for a
year now:
http://liveweb.pixpo.com/loadingreadyrun/index.html

Hopefully this isn't overly commercial (hey we're giving it away
at the moment). I've been on the list for almost a year now and I'm
thinking this meets a standard of relevance that it's ok that I post
about it (once!).

Cheers,
Rob

[videoblogging] Video Search

2006-05-11 Thread andrew michael baron

In case anyone is interested we have been working with this really
cool company called Podzinger.

I have been pretty excited about this feature, probably more so than
any one feature we have added to our site:

http://www.rocketboom.com/vlog/search.html

Its speech-to-text video search and the search returns are pretty
great. You can also subscribe to words, etc.

We worked with them to create a custom look-and-feel search return
but I'm pretty sure anyone can add their feeds and incorporate it
into their site or at least use their site.

That said: Cartoons with the word fuck on them have been published for

business, but
there was no drinking or swearing on his ship.

 Go figure. ;)

Well, that only goes and hits me where I live. I live in Cornwall,
and the story you tell rings a bell with me. Cornwall has so many
natural coves and harbours that Pirates and Smugglers got rich
pickings in the past. But for years, Cornwall did have a very strong,
very large Methodist community. So, it was quite possible for there
to have been more than one.

[videoblogging] going ubersexual

2006-05-11 Thread Brad Hood

I like beauty in nature, art, and I like viewing
glamorous looking people. I owe no apologies for this. Life isn't
fair, the playing field is not level. Some folks are visually hot, some
are not. If you can look hot, that is to your advantage. Go forth and
be hot.

I feel video personalities should look nice for viewers. I've never
cared to spend time shopping for clothes, except for staying warm and
dry outdoors in Alaska. I'm going to start though, so I can better
visually appeal to my audience. I've begun to focus on personal
grooming, makeup, light and 2D design basics. I don't want my
shows appearance to reflect a lack of care or effort, which might
detract from the content.

As with addressing points of optimal video codecs and page design,
audio/visual technicalities, I think this list can help potential
vloggers by pointing them towards
basics resources for leveraging their personal physical assets, how to
make their faces and bodies look more visually appealing. I bet most on
the list are more geek than glam. Many of us have personal aesthetic
issues we wish to address before being on forever TV.

I saw adverts for mineral makeup on TV, and grooming tips on about.com.
I've searched and came up with articles providing tips for those who are
going on TV in front of studio lights, and read about set design
(include carpentry in your terms). In discussions of old vs new model
TV, are folk throwing the `babe out with the bath-water?

You need to wrap it in another format like a MOV (so you have MPEG-4
video/audio inside a MOV file) to get links and other kinds of good stuff.

Yeah, I can find tutorials. What kind of links are you thinking of?
A
banner at the bottom with regular text that someone can click on? A
image
link? A credits frame at the end of your video with a link to
your

That'll make it a lot easier to help.

[videoblogging] vlogging for Alaa

2006-05-11 Thread Andy Carvin

Hi everyone,

A few days ago, Egyptian blogger Alaa Ahmed Seif al-Islam was detained
by Egyptian police for participating in a pro-democracy rally. Bloggers
from globalvoicesonline.org have organized an online campaign for his
release:

http://freealaa.blogspot.com

As part of the campaign, I've posted a three-minute video about Alaa and
some ways bloggers and vloggers can get involved in the campaign.

http://www.andycarvin.com/archives/2006/05/vlogging_for_alaa.html

I'd like to encourage all of you who care about citizen journalism and
free _expression_ to participate if you can. The campaign blog has banners
you can add your vlog. Meanwhile, you can participate more actively by
post a video in support of Alaa and include a link to the campaign blog.
Participants are also encouraged to participate in a Google bomb
that's trying to game the google search algorithm to rank the Free Alaa
blog highly when people search for the word Egypt. To do this, simply
include this link on your site:

a href="" href="http://freealaa.blogspot.com">http://freealaa.blogspot.comEgypt/a

That way, there's a greater chance of Google ranking the site in
searches for the word Egypt.

Thanks,
andy

[videoblogging] Re: My video reply to Ryanne and Britt

2006-05-11 Thread LeanBackVids.com

Thank you Casey. This is how I feel too... although don't plan on a
video from me... I generally like watching talking heads, but don't
feel the comfortable posting my talking head. Personally, I like
creating the topic- (hobby) based videos.

It is my opinion that video blogging will indeed become much more like
TV than personal diaries. There is no need to argue about it, just
open up the iTunes Podcast directory (which is what the masses use).

If only we could move on to another topic. At this point, the
arguement is all opinions and probably won't change the casting
calls of future shows.

-Matt

PS - I really hope this does not ignite the diary vs. show arguement.
We've been through that one too many times.

[videoblogging] Anyone use a Sima MZM-1 microphone?

2006-05-11 Thread Mike Moon

I can get one of these battery operated zoom microphones pretty cheap
through online auctions.
Is this microphone worth the $20 it might cost me in the ends?
Is it better then the built in mike of my JVC GR-DF450?

Thank you,

Mike

Re: [videoblogging] Re: My video reply to Ryanne and Britt

2006-05-11 Thread Adam Quirk

It is my opinion that video blogging will indeed become much more like

TV than personal diaries. I think I know what you mean here Matt (like tv meaning a show format and not off-the-cuff ramblings), and I also do not want to open up the show vs. diary argument, but I always feel the need to point out that this, like every other issue, isn't as cut and dry as people seem to make it out to be. It's not TV
or Personal Diary. There are people making shows out there in videoblogland that are like nothing you can see on TV. Human-Dog and Carp Caviar come to mind.
And this one I just found today via Prof. Weagel: http://kinetocast.blogspot.com/--Adam Quirkthepan.org

[videoblogging] Re: My video reply to Ryanne and Britt

2006-05-11 Thread LeanBackVids.com

Yeah, I don't like the TV reference either. It is probably better to
call it topic-based vs. personal-based. Not to say personal vlogs
don't have topics, but they are usually focused on the person rather
than the topic.

There really isn't even an argument to debate. It is all content...
watch what you like and tune out what you don't.

To each his/her own. Viewer choice is the beauty of this movement.

[videoblogging] Re: PC People (warning: relevant product plug) Not exactly vlogging but

2006-05-11 Thread cooper3acd

Hey Matt,

Thanks I will let you know.

Also, I think you'd be surprised at the depth and security within
the technology. We had 2+ years in the p2p photo sharing space
before making the move to video and with over 100,000 downloads have
never had a reported security issue.

Cheers,
Rob

From my experience, running a web server on Windows is a huge
security
risk... Especially if it is the same machine you use for personal
computing. The average user has no idea about Internet security
and
anytime you open a network port open the risk of being hacked.

Windows is not like UNIX (Mac/Linux). A security flaw in an
Windows
app can easily allow root access to the whole operating system.
UNIX
on the other hand has a very robust permissions system that
provides a
much higher level of security. That being said, I would never
recommend a user run a web server off their personal machine.

Please let me know when you have a version that can be run on
remote
server. Not to diss your product, but in my opinion the
risk is far greater than the benefit.

Hey all, the company I work at has just released a new version
of
our software for creating/broadcasting video web sites right
from
your desktop. Just for PCs at the moment but we have a working
Mac
prototype and will hopefully have something for external
  distribution soon.

Anyhow, it's not exactly vlogging software but it makes it very,
very easy for users to create and host a video web site right
from
their own computer. It takes care of the optimization,
transcoding,
etc and turns your PC into a server of your video, photo and
  audio/podcast content.

We are currently distributing for free. We're going to be adding
some hosted support in the future so it won't require an always-
on
connection. BTW, up-pipe limitations and firewall issues are
handled
quite nicely with some smart caching/proxying on the network end.

If you're interested, check it out at www.pixpo.com.

I'd love to hear any feedback. Like I mentioned, it's not
exactly
vlogging software at this point, but it may morph more in that
direction as the product matures (more room for text, comments +
  better organization).

In the meantime, have a look at my personal page (being served
from
  my laptop here at work):
  http://liveweb.pixpo.com/robc-work/index.htm

Definitely check out the Loading Ready Run channel. It's done
by
some local college guys who have been doing a video a week for a
  year now:
  http://liveweb.pixpo.com/loadingreadyrun/index.html

Hopefully this isn't overly commercial (hey we're giving it
away
at the moment). I've been on the list for almost a year now and
I'm
thinking this meets a standard of relevance that it's ok that I
post
  about it (once!).

  Cheers,
  Rob
