They don't have it set up so you can easily find the submitted videos.

If you click the submit button, you'll see that you are presented
with a list of your videos.

This means the the videos are public, just not officially organized
  by YouTube.

That's easily fixed by publicizing a TAG for everyone to use on their
videos. CNNYOUTUBEDEBATES seems reasonable to me.

  I just did a search:

  No Videos found for 'cnnyoutubedebates'

That's unique enough to allow us to see everyone's submissions. let's

I plan to pose a question for any of the candidates to answer that

John,

There is nothing to talk about. Just pay the bill Lan sent you. This sort
of stuff happens routinely at every media house in the world and they have
policies in place to deal with it (i.e. pay up).

You guys made a mistake, we all do from time to time. Just pay the man

months it's a disgrace.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Hey PodTech - What's up with Lan's image?

2007-06-19 Thread Rupert
So everything's all right, then, is it? Lan's been paid, his
copyright respected and an apology given for the unintentional
oversight? Pity we didn't hear that in Podtech's public announcement
there.

I guess John was responding just to Jay's comment that The lack of
communication is a real problem.

For me, the real problem is that Lan - an individual artist - has
been kept waiting for payment by a company that apparently has money
in the bank, after they apparently used his image without permission.

Being a freelancer waiting on an invoice from someone who can easily
pay it is bad enough - and typical business practice for many big
companies, unfortunately - but waiting on payment after the company
has already wronged you, is about as annoying as it gets.

Perhaps there's a reason they're not paying - maybe since they first
agreed to pay, Podtech has decided they have legal issues with Lan's
claim and are working these out with their lawyers. But not to say
that here, and just to say There's not a problem - we've been
talking since the beginning. is a bit naive, to put it politely.

This was their PR opportunity to say, We didn't intend to... blah
blah blah... we will pay as soon as... blah blah blah... we are sorry
for our... blah blah blah... we share your values and are good guys,
yours in internet love, blah. - or, if they're not intending to pay,
to say There are legal reasons we haven't paid that I can't go into
here, but I'm sorry if it appears blah blah blah

I mean, not everybody would immediately believe that they're knights
in shining armor - but that's what you say, right? It shows you want
to mean well, even if your corporate policy is sometimes in conflict
with that. But to me, what he just wrote felt more like, Lan's a
liar. We did what we do. I will not discuss it in public. Mind
your own business. I just edited out the bad language from that
sentence.

The sad thing is, I like Podtech - I think they're all right,
generally. Maybe they just need to smarten up their awareness of
public perception online and pay their bills a bit quicker.

That's the great advantage of the internet for both sides.
Individuals get to air their grievances if they feel badly treated,
and the other side gets to answer back. Contrast with your options
in the old days: Steve, the CFO at my last company told me a story
about when he was working for Philip Morris (i think) as head of
credit control. A small businessman that they owed money for months
and months turned up, got through security somehow, walked up to
Steve's desk and put his baby on it. There, he said, you fuckin'
feed her - 'cause I can't.

He said he's never written a cheque so fast in his life :)

John,
This concerns us because it seems to be part of our larger struggle to
have our Creative Commons licenses respected. So far, I've seen two
short notes by PodTech people on this, yours, and a line from Scoble
that there is more to the story. Neither address the questions, did
you use the image without permission and if so, what are you doing
about it? It would be really helpful if you could just answer those
points.

My question is... What was the value of the invoice?
The reason I think it's important to know, is that if it's for stupid
money, I would have cut ties too. It's one thing to send them an
invoice for a couple hundred bucks and yet another to send them one
for $38gabillion.

I assume it was for a reasonable amount, but it helps make a level

That's easily fixed by publicizing a TAG for everyone to use on their

[videoblogging] Support amazing filmmaker in NYC

2007-06-19 Thread contactmica
Hello!

I am really thrilled to invite you to the premiere screenings of The
New York 48 Hour Film Project! I can honestly say that this is one of
the most exciting and fun events I have ever been a part of and I hope
any of you in New York will come out this Wed and Thursday to
celebrate these courageous filmmakers.

Here's how it went down..

Last Friday, 49 teams of filmmakers gathered together to pull their
genres out of a green hat and were given a prop, a character and a
line of dialog to incorporate into their films. All films were
produced in 48 hours with volunteer cast and crew. The filmmakers who
participated this year are talented and incredibly diverse in about
any way you can imagine.

Trust me, you will be impressed with what they came up with in 48
hours! And hopefully inspired to get involved next year??

For more details:
http://www.48hourfilm.com/newyork/

PLEASE JOIN US this week for the Screenings

When:
Wednesday and Thursday, June 20 and 21

Group A: Wednesday, June 20 - 1st show - 7:00 pm
Group B: Wednesday, June 20 - 2nd show - 9:30 pm
Group C: Thursday, June 21 - 1st show - 7:00 pm
Group D: Thursday, June 21 - 2nd show - 9:30 pm

Tickets can be purchased at the door or at www.MoviePhone.com
Tickets will sell out, so be sure to get your tix early!

PS

If you are looking for a good story, bring your video cameras and
interview filmmakers, cast, crew - I am sure many will be happy to
share tales of their wild sleepless weekend of filmmaking.

are so many vloggers gathering here.
Now I am doing my MA dissertation about video blog. My research
concerns how video bloggers identify themselves and perceive other
users through watching their own videos as well as interacting with
other vloggers. Besides, it also cares about how vloggers create and
project their own identity through video blog. Thus, if you have the
experience of video blogging, you use video to record your life, to
show your creativities or to express your own opinions, and you
would like to share your experience with me, please send me e-mail

[videoblogging] What's the most efficient way to gather clips from myriad online video services?

2007-06-19 Thread Nick Douglas
I'm working on a new video-critiquing clip show (a bit like the Daily
Reel or the Clip Show, but with huge differences).

I'm making two or three episodes a week. In each episode, I need to
include six to ten clips from a half-dozen videos. I'm grabbing clips
from YouTube, Blip, College Humor, Vimeo, Quicktime embeds, and
several other sources.

So my needs are:
- Less-than-a-day turnaround
- Ability to capture any video
- Decent framerate/audio

I tried iShowU, $20 to buy and the most commonly recommended program
for this work, but the program refuses to record at a decent frame
rate. (By the way, does anyone know YouTube's default frame rate, or
is that variable?)

I'll probably buy Snapz Pro, but I wondered if anyone would warn me
off lest I waste $70 on another broken program.

Surprisingly, former Daily Reel host Felicia Williams tells me her
crew used TubeSock. (I've used TubeSock but decided encoding entire
videos is too slow and inefficient.)

Snapz Pro is what you want. Definitely worth the $70. I use it all the time.
It lets you adjust frame rate, capture size, save in multiple file formats,
has hotkey quick launch. It is a needed tool in the arsenal of the web video
masher upper. If the video can be displayed on your screen, Snapz Pro can
capture it.

[videoblogging] LA: smogtv - Studio equip avail for you to use!

2007-06-19 Thread Roxanne Darling
Hi List,

I met Robert Kandle at Pixelodeon, and he has a studio and equipment
available for community use in the Los Angeles area. Here are the
details; it sounds like a great opportunity. As I understand it, there
will be advertising support on the smogtv web site to support this.
Please contact Robert directly if you are interested:

=

SmogTV is an Online video project supported by HD Pictures Post, a
media and technology firm located in Santa Monica, Ca. SmogTV loans
professional level resources to filmmakers in the LA area to shoot
Internet video content of their choosing. SmogTV in partnership with
Bandpro ( www.Bandpro.com) supplies filmmakers with a Sony 1080i HDV
camera, tape stock, professional sound (Sennheiser microphones,
lavaliers, boom mics), and lighting gear, as well as access to a 2
story state-of-the-art post production facility (Final Cut Pro, Avid,
DaVinci 2k, audio post). SmogTV does not charge filmmakers for using
these resources.

All content shot by SmogTV's filmmakers is posted on its main site,
SmogTV.com. We believe in ubiquity and encourage our filmmakers to
post their content on other sites as well (YouTube, MySpace, their
personal web pages, etc.).

SmogTV's goal is to create a community of filmmakers who can express
themselves freely, meet other like-minded filmmakers, and create
content that connects with people around the world. SmogTV also hopes
to encourage the creation of similar communities in other cities.

We are shooting segments now and are scheduled to launch the site to
the public later this month.

[videoblogging] New contender on the Live broadcasting field

2007-06-19 Thread Jonathan Bloom
I just got accepted into the Mogulus beta and wanted to share with you about
a new broadcasting tool. I've been toyng with the whole Live broadcasting
field for a little bit.

It sets you up with a channel and you can either broadcast live or setup an
auto-pilot playlist of the clips you decide. Broadcasting live is like
uStream except for the fact you can then add text overlays, a logo, or even
those stingers you see on TV! Add to this the fact you can then bring in
cued up clips or go straight to an archive or even switch to another camera
feed or another user who has their computer's webcam hooked up.

Then the auto-pilot can come on and you setup a playlist of clips you'd like
to play automatically and soon they will be adding the ability to rerun your
live broadcasts. There's more features than I mentioned here so goto
http://mogulus.com and see why I'm excited as a vlogger/video producer.

Also for people wondering, their business model is that after 8 minutes a
5-15 second ad plays unless you upgrade to their pro version (which at this
moment means you have no ads, you just pay for your bandwidth).

I apologize if I sound like I'm marketing this, I just am crazy about the
idea! This is what I was looking for! This is exactly what live broadcasting
needs!

[videoblogging] Re: How much money to videoblog full-time?

2007-06-19 Thread bordercollieaustralianshepherd
MY two cents. I'll try to make this valuable for anyone reading. I am
also ready to be flamed. There is a lot that is left out. For example
complexity of job requirement. Skills needed (Audio, Lighting, Editing
(FCP, or iMovie), Production style (ENG or EFP, Studio). Does this
require one or all of the following responsabilities: copywriting,
producing, concepts and logistics, on camera talent. Or is this part
of a team?

Two ways to approach: W-4 employee and a 1099 independent contractor

The company you will be working for considers you a employee part time
or full time and is taking taxes out of earnings. You are also part of
a team (at least one other):
Fresh and new. No prior experience. No equipment (using the compnay's
gear) 7-9 per hour.

Fresh and new but with experience in blogging or related / allied
industry, no equipment. 13-17 per hour

Experienced (shot at least 200 hours of video either web or broadcast)
but no equipment 17.25-23.00 per hour (this is in line with Union
wages on low budget productions)

Experienced and using your own gear. $23.25 and up to at least 37.50
plus what is called a kit rental for your equipment (The employer
insures you and the equipment against loss or damage portal to portal
while performing your job in a professional and safe manner)

Own your own equipment and working as a independent contractor

Minimum $37.50 per hour with a insurance rider for you and the gear (
http://insurance.cch.com/RUPPS/loss-payee.htm ). If you have to get
your own insurance then you will have to determine that cost and add
it to what you charge.

Rule of thumb for a day rate on gear is 1% - 10% of purchase or
replacement value. Have $25,000 in equipment and software, you can ask
between $250.00 to $2,500.00 per day. Depending on what the equipment
is (specialized or off the shelf) will determine what the market will
pay. With the above example a mid point of $1,100 per day for
equipment is reasonable if you are using a quality gear. If you are
contracted for several months a fair equipment rental/lease rate is
between 1- 3 days per week. For example you work a five day week, 8
hours a day 40X37.50 for your services and 3 (day week) X $1,100.00
=$3,300 per week for kit rental.

I know this looks high. Or it looks like I am. It isn't and neither am I.

Travel to and from a location. Decide on a zone size. If you live in
the sticks this may not work. If you live in a major city, and you
shoot within 60 to 90 mile circle, no travel time. Farther away and
you should be compensated for time beyond that zone. This one is tough
to just throw out without a explaination. If you want to know more
about this hit me off list and I can elaborate.

Re: [videoblogging] Flash video and Intel Macs

2007-06-19 Thread Rupert
Hey David,
Flash playback shouldn't be a problem on any Mac, no matter what PC
nerds will tell you. Have you tried running it in different
browsers? You could try CTRL+Clicking on a flash player and changing
some of the things in the Settings and Quality menus.
If that doesn't work, try running the uninstall program which you can
download here

(if that link doesn't work, google Adobe Flash Uninstall)
Then reinstall it. Shouldn't take too long. Quicker than messing

All content shot by SmogTV's filmmakers is posted on its main site,

SmogTV's goal is to create a community of filmmakers who can express

Good Morning! I'm sorry to send such a large, mass-email, but I readthis

article in this morning's Daily Variety, and I felt compelled to send this

along.

Scott Harris, the President of Innovative Artists Agency in SantaMonica,

announced, via MEMO, on Friday, that he was cutting ALL HEALTHBENEFITS for

the 50+ assistants and LOWER-level employess, RETROACTIVEto June 1st. He

stated that the decision was made after muchdeliberation in the face of

the ever-increasing costs of medicalpremiums. However, the move did NOT

affect the AGENTS orAGENT-TRAINEES, only the lower-level employees, all of

whom earn inthe range of $400-$425/week. MAXIMUM. Harris only offers

payincreases 1 time per year, in the amount of $25/week. What does thismean?

If an assistant stays at Innovative for 3 years, their endingsalary would be

$475. In addition, an amount of roughly $40 per WEEK is deducted to cover

HEALTH BENEFITS. So, after each employee contributes an amount of about $170

PER MONTH for a health benefit program that only covers 60%, (after

deductable), Mr. Harris decides to CUT the benefits for these GROSSLY

underpaid assistants, in order to save money. Yet his cuts do NOT affect

those whose salaries are MORE than enough to cover private health care. He

even had the GALL to say this: Most Innovative assistants are very young

and do not have medical issues (and hence do not get much value from the

coverage),he wrote. Harris said the agency would institute a new pay

structure for assistants that would allow them to make more money, which he

felt was a higher priority for them.

The worst part? He was OUT OF THE COUNTRY when he sent this memo. This coward

didn't even have the strength of character to FACE his employees when he cut

their benefits. Why does this bother me? Many reasons:

#1. This is just one example of the huge injustice that these large

companies get away with time and time again. It occurred in the Wal-Mart

corporation just last year, the US Government cut Veteran's benefits - its

an unending cycle that is continuing to propagate because the majority of

people are turning a blind eye.

#2. These cuts are primarily affecting the lowest paid individuals.

#3. He made the assumption that most assistants are young and don't require

medical care. If this were true, then children wouldn't require

Pediatricians. Young people wouldn't require Preventative Care. No one,

especially not the YOUNG WOMEN who happen to become pregnant, require any

healthcare. YOUNG = NO NEED for doctors.

It is reverse ageism, if nothing else. It is no better than cutting the

prescription benefits for the elderly.

If this were just an issue at one small company in Santa Monica, I probably

wouldn't be so bothered. But this is a MUCH larger issue that I am starting

to see a seriously disturbing pattern of.

So, I've decided to try to spearhead a grass-roots campaign.Obviously, we

can't change everything. But if everyone shares this information with other

people, we can reach a large enough audience to enact change.

To start, I am beginning a letter-writing campaign to Mr. Scott Harris,

President of Innovative Artists. My goal is to have him innundated with at

least 500 letters stating our outrage at his AUDACIOUS and CRIMINAL act. If

this works, then it will be a good sign that affecting a greater change is

possible.

Please join me in writing a letter to express your opinions to:

Very cool of you to step up for organising these, Harold. they have
never been at a time that i could join in, but the one that i did
join, i loved.

Sometime just before Pixelodeon, Ryanne (on twitter or in email)
suggested the idea of having screenings of people's videos. we
talked about it as a house party - but then about the idea of having
a live flashmeeting style meetup online.

perhaps a different person each time could choose a videoblogger to
feature and a few of their videos would be screened throughout the
evening and everyone would hang out, watch the videos live, talk
chat about them and whatever else. like a book club, but cooler.

i was totally wowed by the screening focus of Pixelodeon - i think
it's a great way to bring people together, introduce new people and
discover some less well-known vlogs.

anyone else like this idea?

At least in your case, it's basically the same thing, right? Minus

[videoblogging] Re: How much money to videoblog full-time?

2007-06-19 Thread Nick Douglas
I'm currently creating and selling a show. I've asked for more than
$1k a week to make three weekly three-minute episodes. We'll see how
far down I have to negotiate.

I've also signed onto two video projects for $500 per day (including
writing, production, and post).

I charge more for anything commercial (an in-house promotional video)
or anything that requires original writing than to cover an event.

Your site crashes both firefox and safari on my macbook pro a ways into
connecting/loading the mogulus player. Crashes are REALLY rare on both, so
something's amiss (no surprise I guess since it's beta).

Interesting website Mark, I really like the term poverty jet set,
unfortunately I am one of it's members!

It's good to see Philadelphia has an idea about internet marketing. Im
in Australia, and the government tourism agenices only want to steal
your ideas, and the tourism operators dont always understand cutting
edge like online video programs...and then you have the likes of
lonely planet, that try and eat up all the small fishes, stealing
ideas and paying a pittancedo I sound pissed off...he he

From experience, I would say the best way to get into video blogging
full time is make ONE pilot program, and then hit your advertising
market, ring them (skype is cheap for national calls) visit them, tell
them what you plan to do. See what interest is out there. And try and
keep your idea under cover. I've had concepts stolen by bigger
players, and there isnt much you can do.

I did things the wrong way, started an online video site in 2001
(ozdocos.com) just went out there and did it (funding my travels
myself) and only now, trying to sign up advertisers, but then again,
only now, do I believe the time is ripe for online video.

Unfortunately youtube has set an ugly precedent, user generated
content is great, but most creators are happy to just get views, if
you want to get moolah for your hard work, that is more difficult.
For example, I can list my videos on lonelyplanet.tv, travelistic.com,
and numerous other travel video website...but none of the bastards
pay, dont even share their ad revenue.

I'm interested to know WHO is making a living from video blogging? I
dont think anyone is? And I'm also interested to know what google pay
there partners, but every partner is tight lipped, even Nalts, who
only got the deal due to the youtube community.

I know here in Australia NO ONE is making a full time living video
blogging, commercial work must take precedence over vlogging.

I hope I get a reply to this, an honest reply, from someone making a
go at vlogging
