[videoblogging] Free and frozen...will the iPhone 4 video capabilities unfreeze?
I am off my contract at ATT. Finally, I breath the airwaves of a free man. Freedom's great responsibilities descend over me as I behold the daily onslaught of new smart phones. I know not what to do. Frozen, I keep my Nokia flip phone, held together with black duct tape. It soldiers on, and come what may, will someday be heralded as a very smart phone in its own right. But I just watched the glitzy iPhone 4 ad, http://www.apple.com/iphone/design/#design-video and read through that design page. It's typical Apple. I'm now lusting irrationally...but amid the hype, I think this iPhone may be a guerrilla docu/human rights advocate/vlogger's dream!? and of course only for the next few minutes. - 720p 30fps - Bigger battery - Camera's flash will double as a fill light for video. So you could conceivably get an interview in pitch black if you're right up close to someone.I've lit someone's face with a cell phone screen... - Front and back cameras for pic in pic reporting and switching between the two in the fly for reactions and subject...maybe? - On board basic editing in iMovie - Geolocation tagging - Anything else? Will the iPhone 4 unfreeze me? Thoughts? Or are their any Android phones on the horizon like it, but with a mic input and removable batteries!!!??? I submitted my first two CNN iReports in the last two days, just for fun. Both times a CNN staffer called me the next day to vet them and get a quote from me that is below the video. Anyone have any feelings on iReports? Seems a nice way to embed a video on my blog, with the cool red CNN iReport on the video, but I bet they own that video now!!! I've been noodling around for the last year with designing rugged self-contained, solar powered, on-camera training, video blogging kit with off the shelf products. This has entailed finding the right solar battery chargers that fit inside, or glue to, Pelican cases that hold Flip type low budget cameras. I've also made a non-language specific training video for video blogging basics and devised a simple hack-technique for getting the training video onto any camera for playback in the viewfinder, sans computer. [videoblogging] The current best budget mic jacked cam?
Oh wise list. I've got $2000 to spend for a university on a documentation kit (photos for web site and printed brochures, YouTube channel videos of interviews and talks). I'm wishing for a dSLR that has a mic port, so I can buy just one camera, but it seems that might be a bit premature. I love Canon's FS200 type cameras (I actually like the tiny on camera fill LED light), but would prefer to stay away from AVCHD and just have a nice .mp4, .mov, or even .avi file to work with on Mac or PC basic editing platforms, but that's not crucial. I just have the feeling that AVCHD is so temporary...I don't need HD practically, but 16x9 I would like. Xacti's come to mind, if they aren't too wiggy with their UI and have some audio level control. I guess if no magic dSLR is out there with a mic port, for under 2K with a tripod I'll go Canon Vixia with a SD Powershot still... Thoughts? [videoblogging] Re: Does the Blog format work for Vlogging anymore?
Great thread. I feel torn. I feel like only using Blip and YouTube and getting rid of a site altogether sometimes. I'm only part time vlogging, but I have the same struggles. The big question for me seems to be what does the new 'TV' look like? for a while now I've got the feeling that embedded video players that move around from site to site with my content on them are really like floating TVs... I have a sense that two big things are happening. 1. Online video is going to be on bigger and bigger TVs. 2. Comments, some text and links, photos, etc. are also expected if your vlogs are 'stories' as in, it's all rich media now, or convergence media. Eventually people will expect all videos to have a comment section, maybe a little text with links to things mentioned, background photos, HD and tiny screen formats. CNN used to be a TV station, New York Times used to be print. Now on the Web, they are text, audio, video and photos - all in a new format with different rules then the campus radio, tv, newspaper, photojournalism, departments. So maybe for the small time, small crew, or one-person shows, it's a question of specializing to fit into a bigger convergence site eventually to make money? i.e. sell your episodes to a bigger outlet. Or focus on a niche, like episodes shot really tight only for mobile screens, then eventually get pulled into a convergence site?? Anyway, I'm more in academia now, where we're watching work, and lingo, like this: Convergence Journalism. See student-run: http://www.amherstwire.com/ The new full time jobs at universites I'm seeing who's sole job it is to re-edit, with branding, videos from around campus's different departments (journalism, film, comm) for the Web site's marketing and recruitment of prospective students, and make a Web page: I like this page's layout with the three areas and inclusive player with all the shows and big thumbs. http://www.hampshire.edu/news/multimedia.htm Also, a few universities I work with are hiring more web 2.0 social technologists to produce videos for their Web site from campus media, do professor profiles, student interviews, and to manage Facebook, Youtube Channels, Linked-in accounts, Twitter, etc. for all the different departments such as alumni, Web, development, sports, admissions, etc, who all need this kind of help, believe it or not!!! They try and use work-study students who know how to it, but they are not full time professionals. We are also setting up blogs for departments who are just getting to that point!

Merry NY Band. Well it's true for my book about how to be a good Production Assistant at least. If you self-publish a book on Lulu.com (on demand printer) with their free ISBN choice that uses them as the Publisher, but also retains copyright and cancellation with you, it does make it to Amazon in two months or so. [videoblogging] Re: Do you trust what you see?
I agree with the comments on considering the source and hopefully their reputation is deserved. Basically the video, or media, itself is not to be trusted, its the source that makes the video to be believed. Here's an example of an easily faked set of pictures that I trusted due to the source. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4288772.stm ~ ~ Caleb J. [videoblogging] Re: Assistive Hiking Experiment
Your uncle liked what? Richard Amirault My uncle, who's in a wheelchair, liked the video in general. Specifically the sound of footsteps and breathing as one hikes through the woods, which is something he doesn't experience. And the sound of the last shot on top of the mountain. He said he hasn't heard the sound one hears when they are at the top of a mountain since his accident decades ago. I never thought much about it, but the soundscape on a mountain top is very different from most of our normal lives. There's not much sound bouncing around off nearby objects, and the wind can be heard often as a far off suggestion of wind and then gusts close by. ~ ~ Caleb J. There's a sense of height and far off wind that he said he could feel even after all the added noise and such from the mics/compression/output, etc.

Made a few bucks doing an experimental real estate video recently with a friend who's an agent. We came up with a 3-minute format, that ends with NOT being able to get inside the house, so you've got to call him. His company (Coldwell Banker) liked it. I'm thinking if I have to make a few bucks I can pitch this at $400 a video or higher, and perhaps higher even if I agree to get paid only when a property sells. This first took almost two work days. Lapel mic, sun roof, one revision with agent. It would get quicker. http://plocktau.com/temp/SteveLipkin_16CliffordSt/ I'm still looking for work in the Burlington, and now Brattleboro, VT areas, including Amherst/N. [videoblogging] Re: Recommendations for a small camera (Xacti or other) to shoot in India
Neil. That's great footage and piece, thanks for the model # of the Xacti. I've always been amazed by Canon Powershoot SD (400, 600, 1000) video at 640x480, yet I agree with the importing at .dv settings and render time issues. I've often wondered what the video is like with a Canon S5 with their stereo front mounted mics: (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-S5-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B000Q3043Y/ref=pd_bbs_5?ie=UTF8s=electronicsqid=1213883781sr=8-5) I'm using an AVCHD camera now, and on the 30p/12mbs data rate it converts to the .mov intermediate codec pretty quickly and then does not need rendering in Final Cut Express 4 to start editing, so it's at least as quick as bringing Canon SD1000 AVIs into FCE or iMovie or quicker. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Neil Katz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Neil Katz here, a journalist. I have had very good experiences with the Xacti CG65. Small, cheap, shoots well in low light, and is stable on zoom, and files sizes are small. I did an entire video story for the NY Times with that camera and even snuck a shot into a report for CBS News on national TV. http://video.on.nytimes.com/?fr_story=74e0011bd397f3fdad54e60c3b52612d009fa8bf Judge image quality for yourself. And keep in mind the NYT site is playing at about half resolution. I have purchased and returned every camera in the Xacti line except the CG65. The others have better specs, but nothing has a better picture. And it fits in your pocket, which means you will get the shot. Battery life is poor. Buy three batteries and a quick charger. Use an online site to buy non Sanyo batteries. They run $20/each. The only negative is in order to edit you will have to convert the native mp4 files into DV. Sanyo says you can edit with mp4 files and technically you can import them into Final Cut Pro. But it doesn't really work, trust me. That conversion process will take about 1 minute per minute of footage. So if you shoot three hours, expect three hours of conversion when you come home. As an aside, working in India, if you don't have Sony, you can't get it fixed or spare parts, adapters, etc. N --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Rupert rupert@ wrote: I agree. I think the Xacti pistol grip is the best way to shoot - better than the traditional camcorder grip. It produces big video files, though, compared to other little cameras I've used - so get yourself an 8GB memory card or two. I found the best deals for memory cards online - shops will rip you off. [videoblogging] 1920x1080 conversion for web video???
Does does anyone have online resource for the math, or dimensions that will scale correctly so I can pick any size I want and change it. And is putting letter box into normal res smarter? etc. I've been feeling like such an idiot working with getting my new Canon 1920x1080 footage to the web (YouTube, Blip) without messing up the aspect ratio. Using FCE 4, the drop down compression is confusing...There's 16x9 and 4x3 settings for 720x480, etc. Then there's the preserve aspect ratio options, and more often then not my video ends up squeezed. I just came up this post here, and I'm trying it. http://www.foureyedmonsters.com/distributing-your-videos-on-the-web/ Heath Says: November 11th, 2007 at 9:04 pm Thanks, Arin, you rock. I'm very happy so far. I think this is a stellar vlogging/documentary camera. Jacket pocket sized, but takes mics, headphones, and has manual everything, 24p, 30p, 60i and different sized batteries. The video assist light will actually show a face in darkness for those interviews that just will not wait for light. The onboard mic is pretty damn good, being front mounted below the lens. And there's mic levels on screen if you want for external or internal. $70 got me a 16GB card and reader. Very fast download to Mac. Waiting for a copy of FC Express to come so I can edit. The HF10 is black and has on board 16GB card, but people like the HF100 for much less money, and same basic camera. I'll post a demo tape I did, complete with beaver, turkey, and duck sightings in the wild's of New Hampshire on a pond. I'm using a monopod and it's very helpful since the cam is so small. Played off the card to an HD TV using component cables, it looks like a DVD. And the 12x zoom is really nice for nature stuff. The still photos are pretty good, say like a Canon SD 5MP. If I had to complain, I'd say the AWB is a little off sometimes and I'd rather have more video assist LEDs then a flash for stills.

[videoblogging] Thx and Canon PowerShot Elph series as video cam
Love the list, even if i can't always keep up. And thanks to everyone for the help with FCP settings. I'm researching tiny video cameras because my Canon SD400 is old. But it's so good at video with a low profile and the 640/15fps is surprisingly good. Everything here is from the 400, http://lrntv.blip.tv/ except the Tales of Grim which was minidv as original. But to get the point. The Xacti's looks good, and have a mic input, but I get the feeling it is too early to go there and my Canon will suffice for a bit more. I just want an Elph with a mic jack basically!
[videoblogging] FinalCutPro Settings?
Oh wise videobloggers. I've been shooting stuff on a Canon Elph SD400 at 640/480 at 15fps and it arrives as .avi files. I've tried messing with the settings in FCP to get to that spec, but no luck. It especially doesn't like 15fps in the settings. I can edit it in FCP, but it has to be rendered first (same in iMovie on import) and it think it treats it like 720/29.97fps video from that point on, at least that's what the source window says in Compressor. My wish, my dream, is to simply have Final Cut Pro let me edit my video just as it was shot. 640/15fps. Or 320, etc. It's a dream. Thanks for any help. BTW, love the SD400, very unobtrusive, yet OK video for a still camera. caleb john clark http://lrntv.blip.tv/
[videoblogging] Re: Recommendations for lav mic and lights?
For a guerilla setup that fits in your hand, I love this headlamp. Expensive but worth it. It has a flood lens with three brightness settings. If you white balance to florescence, it's not too blue: http://flashlightreviews.com/reviews/petzl_tikka_xp.htm And an on the cheap wired lav: http://www.radioshack.com/product/ index.jsp? productId=2102927cp=2032057.2032187.2032192pg=1searchSort=TRUEy=11x =15s=A-StorePrice-RSKparentPage=family __ ~ Caleb John Clark.
