[videoblogging] Free and frozen...will the iPhone 4 video capabilities unfreeze?

2010-06-07 Thread Caleb Clark
I am off my contract at ATT. Finally, I breath the airwaves of a free man.
Freedom's great responsibilities descend over me as I behold the daily
onslaught of new smart phones. I know not what to do. Frozen, I keep my
Nokia flip phone, held together with black duct tape. It soldiers on, and
come what may, will someday be heralded as a very smart phone in its own
right.

But I just watched the glitzy iPhone 4 ad,
http://www.apple.com/iphone/design/#design-video and read through that
design page. It's typical Apple. I'm now lusting irrationally...but amid the
hype, I think this iPhone may be a guerrilla docu/human rights
advocate/vlogger's dream!? and of course only for the next few minutes.

   - 720p 30fps
   - Bigger battery
   - Camera's flash will double as a fill light for video. So you could
conceivably get an interview in pitch black if you're right up close to
someone.I've lit someone's face with a cell phone screen...
   - Front and back cameras for pic in pic reporting and switching between
the two in the fly for reactions and subject...maybe?
   - On board basic editing in iMovie
   - Geolocation tagging
   - Anything else?

Will the iPhone 4 unfreeze me? Thoughts? Or are their any Android phones on
the horizon like it, but with a mic input and removable batteries!!!???
Oy...

[videoblogging] CNN iReports?

2010-02-18 Thread Caleb Clark
I submitted my first two CNN iReports in the last two days, just for fun.
Both times a CNN staffer called me the next day to vet them and get a
quote from me that is below the video. Anyone have any feelings on iReports?
Seems a nice way to embed a video on my blog, with the cool red CNN
iReport on the video, but I bet they own that video now!!! So perhaps not
a good hosting alternative, albeit a great ego boost. They even said if I
updated an uploaded video to email them and they can swap it out with the
new version. Interestingly accessible for such a big organization.

[videoblogging] Solar Video Kit project (beta)

2010-01-13 Thread Caleb Clark
I've been noodling around for the last year with designing rugged
self-contained, solar powered, on-camera training, video blogging kit with
off the shelf products.

This has entailed finding the right solar battery chargers that fit inside,
or glue to, Pelican cases that hold Flip type low budget cameras. I've also
made a non-language specific training video for video blogging basics and
devised a simple hack-technique for getting the training video onto any
camera for playback in the viewfinder, sans computer.

I'm really not sure exactly what to do with this obsession, except of course
put it out there as a DIY project and see what happens!

[videoblogging] The current best budget mic jacked cam?

2009-11-30 Thread Caleb Clark
Oh wise list.

I've got $2000 to spend for a university on a documentation kit (photos for
web site and printed brochures, YouTube channel videos of interviews and
talks). I'm wishing for a dSLR that has a mic port, so I can buy just one
camera, but it seems that might be a bit premature. I love Canon's FS200
type cameras (I actually like the tiny on camera fill LED light), but would
prefer to stay away from AVCHD and just have a nice .mp4, .mov, or even .avi
file to work with on Mac or PC basic editing platforms, but that's not
crucial. I just have the feeling that AVCHD is so temporary...I don't need
HD practically, but 16x9 I would like. Xacti's come to mind, if they aren't
too wiggy with their UI and have some audio level control.

I guess if no magic dSLR is out there with a mic port, for under 2K with a
tripod I'll go Canon Vixia with a SD Powershot still...

Thoughts?

Thank you.

[videoblogging] Re: Does the Blog format work for Vlogging anymore?

2008-12-12 Thread Caleb J. Clark
Great thread. I feel torn. I feel like only using Blip and YouTube and
getting rid of a site altogether sometimes. I'm only part time
vlogging, but I have the same struggles.

The big question for me seems to be what does the new 'TV' look
like? for a while now I've got the feeling that embedded video
players that move around from site to site with my content on them are
really like floating TVs...

I have a sense that two big things are happening. 1. Online video is
going to be on bigger and bigger TVs. 2. Comments, some text and
links, photos, etc. are also expected if your vlogs are 'stories' as
in, it's all rich media now, or convergence media. Eventually people
will expect all videos to have a comment section, maybe a little text
with links to things mentioned, background photos, HD and tiny screen
formats. CNN used to be a TV station, New York Times used to be print.
Now on the Web, they are text, audio, video and photos - all in a new
format with different rules then the campus radio, tv, newspaper,
photojournalism, departments.

So maybe for the small time, small crew, or one-person shows, it's a
question of specializing to fit into a bigger convergence site
eventually to make money? i.e. sell your episodes to a bigger outlet.
Or focus on a niche, like episodes shot really tight only for mobile
screens, then eventually get pulled into a convergence site??

Anyway, I'm more in academia now, where we're watching work, and
lingo, like this:

Convergence Journalism. See student-run: http://www.amherstwire.com/

The new full time jobs at universites I'm seeing who's sole job it is
to re-edit, with branding, videos from around campus's different
departments (journalism, film, comm) for the Web site's marketing and
recruitment of prospective students, and make a Web page: I like this
page's layout with the three areas and inclusive player with all the
shows and big thumbs. http://www.hampshire.edu/news/multimedia.htm

Also, a few universities I work with are hiring more web 2.0 social
technologists to produce videos for their Web site from campus media,
do professor profiles, student interviews, and to manage Facebook,
Youtube Channels, Linked-in accounts, Twitter, etc. for all the
different departments such as alumni, Web, development, sports,
admissions, etc, who all need this kind of help, believe it or not!!!
They try and use work-study students who know how to it, but they are
not full time professionals.

We are also setting up blogs for departments who are just getting to
that point!

Merry NY Band.

Well it's true for my book about how to be a good Production Assistant
at least. If you self-publish a book on Lulu.com (on demand printer)
with their free ISBN choice that uses them as the Publisher, but also
retains copyright and cancellation with you, it does make it to
Amazon in two months or so. (They also have an option I think for $100
where you are the publisher and can do multiple books.)
http://www.amazon.com/Production-Assistants-Pocket-Handbook/dp/143575624X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1226413634sr=8-1

They price it for one penny less then the price I set on Lulu, and I
get less of a cut on LuLu. Cleaver. Write a review if you're read it!
It's selling about 2 a day online, mostly PDF downloads which are
about the same profit as the printed copy:

The BBC's Natural History Unit cameras are in Kenya's Masai Mara

some astonishing sights.

On Friday, one of the cameras set up to stream live pictures to the
expedition's website 24 hours a day captured the moment a lion took

Big Cat Live (BBC)

For daily updates/webcams

It was a remarkable sequence, and quite possibly the first time such
an event had been seen on a live webcam.

It augurs well for the Big Cat Live series which returns to UK TV
screens on Sunday. No that there haven't been some predictable
technical hiccups in getting the camera network up and running.snip

[videoblogging] Re: Best Low-Light HD camcorder

2008-09-30 Thread Caleb
Ok, it's not HD or close, but the best low light (but also low
quality) camera I ever used was an old Sony MiniDV with super night
shot which used infrared I think. The video's colors were totally
tweaked, but you could get content and see details in almost no light,
it was amazing.

I'm having no problem editing AVCHD footage shot NOT on HD in Final
Cut Express on a three year old Macbook pro. But The HD footage is
bulky and takes a lot of extra render time and I agree, is obviously
inferior in resolution to tape or P2 type expensive equipment.

2008-09-26 Thread Caleb J. Clark
That FS100 looks sweet for the price, but no mic port, which is a
killer for me. I've got the HF100 (my review here:
http://techtrek.blip.tv/#972293) and so far I'm happy, the only issues
are that sometimes the white balance seems to shift between takes, but
I'm not sure.

And you're right, I don't shoot on HD mostly, but XP+ so it's easier
to edit in Final Cut Express. You simply Log and Capture, which is
about the same time as bringing in AVIs from an Xacti (I think) then
in the time line, you don't have to render at all. If it's HD, there's
a long render process if I remember right.

My sense is that for video blogging Card Only cameras, with mic ports,
the shoot out is still Canon HF vs. Xacti 1000s

I've used both, and it's pretty close for me, with Canon slightly in
the lead due to form factor (I don't like the pistol feel in terms of
the subjects and look) and User Interface.

I've used both, and it's pretty close for me, with Canon slightly in

My uncle, who's in a wheelchair, liked the video in general.
Specifically the sound of footsteps and breathing as one hikes through
the woods, which is something he doesn't experience. And the sound of
the last shot on top of the mountain. He said he hasn't heard the
sound one hears when they are at the top of a mountain since his
accident decades ago. I never thought much about it, but the
soundscape on a mountain top is very different from most of our normal
lives. There's not much sound bouncing around off nearby objects, and
the wind can be heard often as a far off suggestion of wind and then
gusts close by.

Neil. That's great footage and piece, thanks for the model # of the
Xacti. I've always been amazed by Canon Powershoot SD (400, 600, 1000)
video at 640x480, yet I agree with the importing at .dv settings and
render time issues. I've often wondered what the video is like with a
Canon S5 with their stereo front mounted mics:

I'm using an AVCHD camera now, and on the 30p/12mbs data rate it
converts to the .mov intermediate codec pretty quickly and then does
not need rendering in Final Cut Express 4 to start editing, so it's at
least as quick as bringing Canon SD1000 AVIs into FCE or iMovie or
quicker.

http://video.on.nytimes.com/?fr_story=74e0011bd397f3fdad54e60c3b52612d009fa8bf
Judge image quality for yourself. And keep in mind the NYT site is
 playing at about half resolution.

I have purchased and returned every camera in the Xacti line except
the CG65. The others have better specs, but nothing has a better
picture. And it fits in your pocket, which means you will get the shot.

Battery life is poor. Buy three batteries and a quick charger. Use
an online site to buy non Sanyo batteries. They run $20/each.

The only negative is in order to edit you will have to convert the
native mp4 files into DV. Sanyo says you can edit with mp4 files and
technically you can import them into Final Cut Pro. But it doesn't
 really work, trust me.

That conversion process will take about 1 minute per minute of
footage. So if you shoot three hours, expect three hours of
 conversion when you come home.

As an aside, working in India, if you don't have Sony, you can't get
it fixed or spare parts, adapters, etc.

Just dropped another $50, to $650.00.

I'm very happy so far. I think this is a stellar vlogging/documentary
camera. Jacket pocket sized, but takes mics, headphones, and has
manual everything, 24p, 30p, 60i and different sized batteries. The
video assist light will actually show a face in darkness for those
interviews that just will not wait for light. The onboard mic is
pretty damn good, being front mounted below the lens. And there's mic
levels on screen if you want for external or internal. $70 got me a
16GB card and reader. Very fast download to Mac. Waiting for a copy of
FC Express to come so I can edit. The HF10 is black and has on board
16GB card, but people like the HF100 for much less money, and same
basic camera.

I'll post a demo tape I did, complete with beaver, turkey, and duck
sightings in the wild's of New Hampshire on a pond.

I'm using a monopod and it's very helpful since the cam is so small.
Played off the card to an HD TV using component cables, it looks like
a DVD. And the 12x zoom is really nice for nature stuff. The still
photos are pretty good, say like a Canon SD 5MP.

If I had to complain, I'd say the AWB is a little off sometimes and
I'd rather have more video assist LEDs then a flash for stills.

[videoblogging] Recommended Settings For Upload???

2007-07-12 Thread Caleb J. Clark
Wise list. I'm working up some guidelines for blip.tv's recommended
settings for making an original upload version, mostly with QT. I'm
heavily copying JetSet's and Apple TV.

I'd love to have your thoughts or settings for services such as
blip.tv that do not alter your original upload and work with the
beginnings of hi res living room tech like Apple TV.

My draft

Format = QuickTime
Extension = .mov
CODEC = h.264 baby!
Size = 640 pixels wide. Height depends on your favored aspect ratio.
16:9 = 640x360. 4:3=640x480.
Deinterlace no matter what? sometimes makes it worse

Audio = AAC audio, 48kHz. Render settings = Best. Target bit rate =
128+. Mono or stereo depending on mic used to record.

Key frame interval = 5. Or up to 24, or auto. Lower is better.
Frame rate: Current
Frame Controls: Off (or on to deinterlace using progressive?)
Multi-pass: On
Frame reorder: On
Data rate: 2.000 (Mbps). Higher better.
Fast Start: On

Other Formats
Don't forget a original resolution master for every episode.

Windows Media Player (.wmv) version if you can to give people choices
on a PC. a
href=http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/create/saveforweb.mspx;
Movie Maker Export Settings/a.

iPod version: .m4v version for iPods using QuickTime's iPod
settings. If you have a blip.tv Pro account we'll do this for you.

TIA

2007-07-11 Thread Caleb J. Clark
Wonderful review. Thanks. I've been waiting for something like this
with a mic port. But this seems not to have one. I'd even go for just
durable, but with a mic port. But no base station. Need built in USB
and little battery chargers. I wished the Canon TX1 had a mic port...

i think this is the best quality xacti yet
 even over the HD model.

 has great sound
WAY better than the HD model, which as many people mentioned is
really loud
 and distorted
 in some situations.

and the low light shooting is much improved!

i also posted a sample raw file there for y'all to play with.

[videoblogging] History?

2007-06-28 Thread Caleb J. Clark
Merry Vloggers. Caleb here, mostly a lurker. I'm building a learning
center over at blip.tv this summer and a student at NYU's ITP program
(BTW: I'll post a draft of the center here before we go live for your
feedback).

Anyway I was doing a little research on the history of video blogging
and ran into an interesting historical occurrence.

While video blogging seems to have started in 2000, and of course with
with Steve in 2004. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_blog

Eric, the content editor here at blip.tv, showed me 40 episodes of the
JENNIShow he salvaged. This is NOT the famous JenniCam
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JenniCam), but the same woman doing a
show every 14 days and posting the videos. A video blog? no RSS? It
was a Show. same theme, name, etc. Maybe it's just one of the first
web shows???

The video won't play unless you download the source:

The blip.tv page is here: http://astraldisaster.blip.tv/file/88/
The way back machine pegs the show at 1997:
http://web.archive.org/web/19971224180244/http://thesync.com/

I watched/listened to it. Mostly an apt. tour. didn't hear a date
mentioned, but her computer is shown, as is a cabbage patch doll. It
is a show for sure, and she asks for emails for show ideas, building
community and all and ends with i'll see you in two weeks.

Nice, thx. I agree. It really all is Television in the end. We've
added RSS, the 3-5 minute format, and online community. We've broken
down the barriers to broadcast too. But when the public sees video on
a screen that is not coming off media in their house (DVD, VHS, etc.)
they just say TV and will continue to I think. I can't count the
times I've resorted to telling no-techie friends, It's a TV show on
the Web.

[videoblogging] Thx and Canon PowerShot Elph series as video cam

2007-01-31 Thread Caleb
Love the list, even if i can't always keep up. And thanks to everyone
for the help with FCP settings.

I'm researching tiny video cameras because my Canon SD400 is old. But
it's so good at video with a low profile and the 640/15fps is
surprisingly good. Everything here is from the 400, http://lrntv.blip.tv/
except the Tales of Grim which was minidv as original.

But to get the point. The Xacti's looks good, and have a mic input,
but I get the feeling it is too early to go there and my Canon will
suffice for a bit more. I just want an Elph with a mic jack basically!

[videoblogging] FinalCutPro Settings?

2007-01-21 Thread Caleb
Oh wise videobloggers. I've been shooting stuff on a Canon Elph SD400
at 640/480 at 15fps and it arrives as .avi files. I've tried messing
with the settings in FCP to get to that spec, but no luck. It
especially doesn't like 15fps in the settings.

I can edit it in FCP, but it has to be rendered first (same in iMovie
on import) and it think it treats it like 720/29.97fps video from that
point on, at least that's what the source window says in Compressor.

My wish, my dream, is to simply have Final Cut Pro let me edit my
video just as it was shot. 640/15fps. Or 320, etc.

It's a dream. Thanks for any help. BTW, love the SD400, very
unobtrusive, yet OK video for a still camera.
