I'm trying the blip.tv ads - added them 1-2 weeks ago so far it says they've made $0.28! at this rate they should pay for a coffee every 3 months or so. not sure if I'll keep them, but I wanted to see how the process works so giving it a go 2009/12/16 Jay dedman jay.ded...@gmail.com I'm really skeptical of advertising in videos. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vloggercon - why only two times?
hi Jenna, to further Rupert's point, are you looking at the videoblogging projects as well as the in-person-conferences? as I think these have been quite successful over the years and have participants from different countries videoblogging styles. eg the vb-weeks, Vlomo (Navlopomo), Verdi's 24/24, Rupert's recent vlomo 30/30/30, carp caviar, Jay Ryanne's Have Money Will Vlog, etc. others can prob remember more 2009/12/6 RANDY MANN themaddm...@gmail.com vlogger con 3 boston march 2010 On Sat, Dec 5, 2009 at 3:08 PM, Rupert rup...@twittervlog.tvrupert%40twittervlog.tv wrote: This goes to the heart of what videoblogging is, I think. - What is the content? - Why do people do it? - Where do they do it? - How many of them are there? - What do they have in common with each other? The truth is that people are making wildly different types of content and have massively different interests and reasons for doing this. But back in the early days, we all had this huge thing in common, which was that we were early adopters, imagining what the future would look like and how the tech would work. I think that made up the main part of what people would talk about when they met in groups, right? And because there were just a few people around the world, it felt like a special mission, deserving of extraordinary expense and time. Now that future is here and most of the unknowns are pretty much known, that's one massive incentive to meet up that's been removed. The rest of what we do is done online, so travelling hundreds or thousands of miles to hang out and chat in person just doesn't have the same pull. But meeting up to either work on projects or screen things might be different. Still, I notice that most conferences are very local - city- specific. Attracting a larger base of people mostly interested in commercial applications of technology so they can justify taking the day off and expensing the conference fee... So if we were to do more of these kind of things, I think they'd have to be local. (i'm sure this is why VlogEurope has kept going for 5 years). Rupert http://twittervlog.tv On 5 Dec 2009, at 19:51, Michael Verdi wrote: Maybe another part of another not happening is that I think there were two big motivations (figure stuff out and meet each other in person) and there's really not a lot of urgency behind them anymore. There's only so many conferences on the figuring the tech stuff out that you can have. The information has been pretty well disseminated. I recently went to a local brown bag coworking session and a few people were doing a presentation on videoblogging. It was really strange because it was almost an exact replica of a demo I've given over and over yet, nobody there had any idea who I was (not that they should). So it feels like, especially for this group, that that part has been taken care of. As for the meeting in person aspect, that still happens but just on a smaller scale at other conferences. I live an hour down the road from SXSW and a few times in recent years I've just gone up there to meet people for lunch and dinner. The Open Video Conference was cool this last summer - a good sized group of us hung out there. -Verdi -- Michael Verdi http://michaelverdi.com http://talkbot.tv [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Today is my last day at my job. I've been saving the last two weeks worth of videos to watch in one go to celebrate. Congrats to everybody for making their video and making this happen. I'm really impressed, too. Well done everyone! What I'd really like, though, is to edit together the whole thing into one video as was suggested at the start. I tried earlier in the month, but was unable to download several of the entries from their various video hosting sites. Does anyone have the requisite download-fu to grab all of the videos and place them into a single sequence? I realize that the interactive and looping entries would need to be dumbed down for this sort of presentation, but I'd still love to bable to watch the whole game from start to finish. Any thoughts? Re: [videoblogging] It's Done!
sorry to hear about your Mother Ian, I didn't realize. your video was great inspiration for the theme so don't beat yourself up about it. I meant to do more in isadora/processing but didn't get time. was going ok for first couple of weeks then things got away from me and I missed a few days (some I took video but haven't uploaded yet) in the last couple of weeks. was a good nudge to remember to take the camera out, though next time I might stick to 12seconds or SD only as the HD ones are taking me forever to convert/save/upload great work everyone! kath 2009/12/1 Ian Beaumont i.beaum...@virgin.net Well, I'd set myself a target. I failed miserably. I only did 5 days of videos. However, I do have a reason. Just before everything was due to begin, my mother died in hospital. She was 78. She'd been ill for sometime with C.O.P.D. As a result, my mindset was never really in the project. I thought I would have the day I picked for my contribution as a day off. But no, I was asked to work all day that day. As a result, my contribution ended up being a quick edit of old footage. Not what I really wanted to do at all. And my plan to try different video types and locations just ran out of creative steam far too early. It was a great project though, and I felt that everybody elses contributions way outshone mine. But, you know where my mind was. If I was a little more planned, I'd be doing Countdown To Christmas videos as well. But my head and heart have not really been in it. hi Frank, sorry I can't recall seeing the embed field in previous uploads, but I tried it now with another blip video using the othe other url in the blip dashboard list. eg if I use the permalink for url= http://blip.tv/file/id I don't see the embed field it fills in all the video details from my blip post. if I use the episode details url=http://blip.tv/dashboard/episode/id then it does see the embed I have to fill in all the details - it looks like this page hasn't recognized it's a video you u might have to paste the blip embed code?? I haven't tried a .wmv file so not sure if that's related? also, if I use the direct link .flv file as the url then it uses that nice player which keeps a snapshot of the video as the background, but you need to enter all the description/tags etc manually (just paste from blip). can't recall having to enter embed code using this method though.. hth kath 2009/11/25 Frank Carver frank.car...@googlemail.com However, I am having trouble with the form to add a video to the 30 days videobloggers miro community. I use VoltaicHD on mac for my HD videos, as the camera stores them as .mts files so I need to convert before editing. Re: [videoblogging] demand video model
yeah it's pretty bad. just wondering if there'll be 'professional videobloggers' like the 'professional bloggers' who write on similar sites with paid-for-content. or maybe they're trying to be bought by google won't care if they're then shutdown? the pay is very low, but it's a lot for people in some countries who work online. 2009/10/29 Rupert Howe rup...@twittervlog.tv Jesus, this is horrible. Any company that produces instructional spam, paying minimum wage for media production, in order to get their videos listed at the top of Google's results, will die a nasty and expensive death. One of Google's highest priorities is defeating spam in listings. And SEO is a terrible thing to have to rely on. A few weeks ago, a friend was telling me a story about when Yahoo bought Kelkoo, a shopping comparison site that used to appear at the top of all Google listings. The next day, Google shut down all Kelkoo's listings. Their traffic completely died overnight. Eventually, Kelkoo signed a deal for Google paid ads... This company (Demand Media) is counting on Google ranking video content high in their listings. Forgetting that this is because a) Google owns YouTube; b) most video is organically submitted to the web and linked to and commented on by *people*; and c) whatever the medium, Google hates shitty mass-produced content whose only aim is to trick Google into giving it a good ranking, so they can make money from advertising. Maybe you're right - maybe the next generation will move into this kind of content production work - but hopefully not for these kind of rates, with this kind of unsustainable business model. Re: [videoblogging] Advertising and personal vlogs : Was, Blip doesn't love me anymore?
I love blip.tv because the video quality looks great (closest to source) I like how they post the embed codes download links as I'm basically a lazy (timepoor) person and like them so I don't have to think as much. youtube compresses a lot. I suppose the other option is to upload onto our own servers as in general (for me at least), since they're personal/niche videos they're not getting a lot of views so likely wouldn't throw out the bandwidth costs too much. I'd have to shift hosting sites though as I'm still on my orig one which doesn't have the large storage like some of the US cheaper ones. this would mean people would miss out on the traffic they might get from people browsing all/topic vids on sites like blip/vimeo - the community aspects. but I guess if it happened, there'd be other video curation sites popping up where people can post urls for viewers to browse it wouldn't matter where they were hosted. (like Andrew Baron's new site? haven't played there much yet) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Re: [videoblogging] Artists and Healthcare
maybe you need to talk to the unions or start one (not just videobloggers - all citizens). and get them to negotiate proper conditions. I also find it crazy there's no national healthcare system in America. I think Australians would down tools and go on strike if the govt ever considered getting rid of medicare here. we get tax breaks for having private health cover, but public medicare system is still available for those without private cover. don't wait for the govt - use the people :) (though some say Aus was built on the back of unions.. perhaps that's a difference between it USA in this regard?) Jay Adrian, thanks for the examples of video tagging. Seth Keen's work looks very cool. I always thought mpeg7 would be used for this but haven't heard much about it anymore ( only looked into it years ago for some facial recognition stuff which didn't end up happening). I shoot way too much video ( take too many photos). most of it would be classed as dross to anyone but me (Adrian :) ) but I've found I've looked back on it and found bits I've missed etc or seen things in a different light after time, so I like having the extra video. ( my videos are really just for me/family/friends) it would be cool to tag it like on flickr though (but I must admit I only do basic tagging on flickr too - not down to subject of individual shots). one of the early videoblogging projects was for tagging clips wasn't it? I forget the name of it. started with M I think? kath [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

these are great Rupert - thanks for the links. He shoots interviews with people who live and work under the el in Philadelphia - and combines them with lots of cinematography of the environment. He has a new URL - http://dskessler.com/shadowworld I really love David's work. I cant think another web video project that takes time to document people in a specific place with such clarity. If there are other examples, be good to identify them. His work is so deceptively simple...just interview someone about who they are and what they do. Imagine people watching this in 50 years. Jay
Re: [videoblogging] Re: Blog World Expo and New Media Conference [ Vloggercon 2009? ]
fwiw I really liked the 24hours24artists concept so people could tune in from different locations broadcast from different locations. it's not face2face meetup which is the best part about conferences (for me anyway), but there is the chat aspect, and archives later to watch. I wonder if a mogulus/similiar broadcast could be done over a w/e people could speak on these if there are topics they want to cover or work to show. maybe if there were gaps in schedule, people from the audience could speak on video if they wanted. (have a single director perhaps to co-ordinate switching, or a couple in different timezones) but I haven't made it to any of the vlogger conferences due to work/travel costs/time/timezones. I've always liked hearing about them and watching remotely where possible. kath

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Does the Blog format work for Vlogging anymore?
re Ron's link to Community is the new capitalism: Community is More than Dollars and Cents I thought we already were a community - this mail list. when people post links in their sigs others can check them out comment/continue conversations there or reply to email privately. the vlomo type projects seem good too for bursts of sub-communities too though it's hard to maintain focus / be able to post regularly at times. other online communities I've been involved with for years have been via mail lists or forums/msg boards. some post links/videos etc. I don't think the platform / medium really matters though - it's more about the involvement of the people the discussions interactions that keep people coming back. I don't know - maybe people should include their 'featured posts/videos' links in an email sig or do an announcement every now then if they have something special. perhaps some don't like doing 'shameless self promotion' or there's risks of too much spam. for a website with content, personally I find a CMS eg drupal site a better format than a blog-only one as there's multiple ways people can come across posts be presented / organised. but mostly because that's what I've used most often too. and their themes are even better these days for people who want more flexibility (though I haven't updated my sites' themes yet - still using default ones) kath

ok thanks a lot. just thought I'd check in case I'd missed something I've moved over to the mefeedia maillist so will ask any more questions there thanks kath 2008/11/1 Rupert [EMAIL PROTECTED]: As far as I can see, that URL contains the specific video IDs. So you have to actually click the Theater View link to see the latest. Thus you have to link to the Mefeedia channel, and tell people to click Theater View. So it's two clicks away from your blog. I have to say, this is a vast improvement on what we've ever had before in terms of aggregating a group project automatically on the web from multiple video sharing sites - and without using tags. And it's brilliant to be able to subscribe to that feed in an RSS reader or video aggregator like Miro, iTunes or FireANT. But as far as embedding on your blog, there's no embeddable player at the moment to handle all the different video sites in a playlist. There might be a way to make a JW Flash Player play a playlist made from the Mefeedia feed including MP4 files, but I don't know how to do that. If anybody does, could you help? GPS Film is new media artwork from filmmaker Scott Hessels that invents a new way of watching movies based on the viewer's location and movement. Using a GPS-enabled PDA or mobile phone, the audience creates a new type of film experience that reveals the story through their journey. Released as a free, open-source application, the project will premiere on 4 September 2008 along with the first film made specifically for the system, Singaporean filmmaker Kenny Tan's chase comedy Nine Lives. The GPS Film application, source code, and Nine Lives are available for free download on the project websitewww.gpsfilm.com. The application allows for a developer to create story spaces of any size. The movies are also interchangeable and easily matched to any place. The software default is currently Nine Lives—a prototype film comedy that can unfold in nine directions depending on the viewer's journey around downtown Singapore. Scott Hessels is an internationally recognised media artist and filmmaker who merges cinema with new technologies to create innovative media experiences. For GPS Film, he collaborated with film and engineering students at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University. The project uses emerging technologies to bring story into real space; neighborhoods, architecture, and landscapes become part of the cinema experience. Movies can be personalized and localized. [videoblogging] Fwd: nettime breakthrough for open video on the web
perhaps of interest to some here? is anyone doing much with OGG files? -- Forwarded message -- From: Florian Schneider Date: 2 Aug 2008 22:05 Subject: nettime breakthrough for open video on the web To: nettime-l It was my last day at ISEA 2008 in Singapore and we were supposed to have a dinner with noborder/no one is illegal activists and the panelists of the bordercrossing theme, when jaromil came down the street smiling all over the face: I have great news he screamed. Firefox 3.1 wil support OGG Theora! In other words: This is most likely the breakthrough for open video on the web! OGG THEORA is the only open source video erncoding suite. It is available for general use after the bitstream format for Theora was frozen Thursday, 2004 July 1. http://theora.org Native support in Firefox means that end-users on proprietary platforms like windows or mac do no longer have to install additional software in order to watch OGG encoded video. If you want to publish a video you can just use the video tag like for any image. There is no need for additional javascript or flash! Slashdot writes: http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/07/31/1752206from=rss Ogg Theora support for the HTML5 video tag is in the Firefox 3.1 nightlies. Theora is the only video format allowed on Wikimedia Commons, so Wikimedia people are pushing Wikipedia readers to download a nightly and try it out. Break it, crash it, report bugs, get it into good shape and nullify Apple and Nokia's FUD the best way possible. They may have gotten the words 'Vorbis' and 'Theora' removed from the HTML5 spec, but the market will tell them when their browsers are sucking. Christopher Blizzard wrote in his blog http://www.0xdeadbeef.com/weblog/?p=492 Mozilla is committing to include native support for OGG video and audio in its next release that includes support for the video element tag. (Very likely to be Firefox 3.1 if there no huge change in course.) The code landed for ogg support last night. I suspect that the effects of this will take a long while to be felt but it's a great first step in bringing open video to the web by delivering it to a couple hundred million people around the world. At KEIN.ORG and in many related projects (like the Dictionary of War) we have been insisting on the use of an open video compression format for many years now. Despite all the complaints about additional software installations it seemed crucial to us to give proove of the possibility to publish digital video without the licensing and royalty fees or vendor lock-in associated with proprietary formats. In summer 2003 we started the open source video platform V2V http://v2v.cc which is entirely based on open source code. Ralph Giles, the maintainer of the THEORA project, was one of the speakers at NEURO -- networking europe http://neuro.kein.org in Munich in February 2004. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Recommendations for a small camera (Xacti or other) to shoot in India
perhaps slightly OT but try and keep the camera cool. I had one die due to the heat - it overheated, lost all colours and then finally even the lens motor broke. it gets really hot there and if you're using it a lot it's easy for the camera to overheat. so get a robust camera if you can!

Re: [videoblogging] fw: Mobile Videos: a Cybermohalla Ensemble discussion
thanks to both of you Rupert Adrian! I watched the film - I loved the reflections in the water and shadows. (similar bicycle shadows) I was wondering what people would have thought of him filming back then. these days almost everyone has a camera and points it, but back then I'm guessing cameras would have been more expensive relatively (?) and less people would have carried a film camera into the streets. I wondered what they thought of him filming the ground and the different angles. it was interesting to see the similiarities between the delhi streets film and the Regen one too. I suppose the human eye hasn't changed that much - similar people throughout different times still notice things in same way and have similar thoughts. I'll look out for more of Regen's work. 2008/6/14 Rupert [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Thank you! I didn't know about that. I just found it on the Internet Archive: http://ia351416.us.archive.org/1/items/Regen/Regen.mp4 I'll watch it later. I love the whole idea of it. The late 20s produced such incredible things. Re: [videoblogging] Re:From Mac *TO* PC -- Should I Switch?
I'd always had a pc (work) laptop until I bought a macbook pro for home. I couldn't afford a mac and the pc did most things I wanted it to. but usually I had to fix it before I could use it - even for simple installations - there was usually something missing and I had to install extra bits or the s/w I wanted to try was only on mac. since buying the mac I haven't had to do this, so I've found I prefer using it and am more productive on it than before when I had a pc. I can just sit down and start making things so I find it's better for my creativity levels. I like the software that comes with it - iphoto etc and how it's easier for me wrt to music/video/development tools. I'm an engineer and work on computers all day at work - years ago I used to like fixing computers kept up with hardware specs etc but now I'd much rather just use one. I still have a windows laptop for work and work on linux/posix systems too so go through the pain at work. but for home I wouldn't go back to pc now except for maybe a cheaper storage server desktop/archive system solution as it'd only be used for file storage perhaps remote access to files, though with cheap ISP online disk storage options available these days even this is a stretch. the one I bought originally had a screen problem - I think I must have bought one of the first batches - and the apple store support from where I bought it was terrible. eventually I went to apple australia during a trip home and they arranged a replacement and since then everything's worked well. they said it's easier to purchase online rather than the stores as the stores don't have the same infrastructure they used to for getting things fixed. if I'd known that at the time I would have bought it online originally like my first apple product - the ipod. the mac was more expensive but for me I don't care about that because it's saved more time in me having to get things to work first go actually getting something creative done, so was worth the money. over time the difference isn't much. the only problem I have now is I fill the disk all the time but that's a user issue not machine. I wish they'd let me use the mac at work instead of the pc. the best thing I like about OSX ( linux) is that when you open a few things at once and are working in one screen the other screens open in background and u can select them when u are ready. whereas windows pushes everything to the front when it's ready - it doesn't care if you're in the middle of typing something in an already selected window. this annoys me no end on a pc at work!! -- http://www.aliak.com

Kiran Verma: Often, while looking out of the window of a bus, I used to wonder... if I were to pause and think, what would I think about the outside? I made a mobile video of the view from the window of the bus. And then when I saw it later, I realised, while music played and people chatted, and there was a restlessness in the bus, people on the road were very quiet and completely solitary. Jaanu Nagar Just day before yesterday, in the evening, it was raining heavily. It is said a downpour can ruin many things. But when I stood and watched, it seemed to me everything was becoming more resplendent. I found this attractive. Everything looked so different from usual. Descriptions of rain are usually about how people run for shelter, leave what they are doing, But what I was seeing was something different. I thought a photo may not capture this difference. I wanted to see if I could make a video resonate with what I was thinking. I looked through the screen and started recording. Someone held an umbrella, another had covered himself with a plastic sheet. Someone was returning from work, a scarf thrown over his head. People were not running around. Some were buying vegetables for home. And there was a chowmein stall - It was open to the sky. The man was busy frying chowmien in the pan. I thought a photograph would not have helped me capture this style, the special music... Along with the raindrops was the sound chhan-chhan-chhan, as the stirrer moved in the pan, while everyone stood around under their umbrellas, waiting to eat. Tripan Kumar - That day my parents, my sisters and cousins - they all started dancing together, spontaneously. I had never seen them like this before. I mean, it wasn't any special occasion... We just happened to be in a room together, and everyone started dancing. The young and the old, all danced together. For no special reason. I'd never seen such a burst of joy, expressed in this way, inside a room, before. I was surprised. And I wanted to keep with myself this memory of having been surprised. Nasreen - It could be something banal. But was I attracted by it? If it attracted me, then it was significant enough to be shot. It's possible it remained banal for someone else. But if it seemed important to me, then, yes, it was something worthy of being looked at. Love Anand - For instance, I'd often look out of my window at the shadows cast by clothes put out to dry. These shadows would hover over the entire lane, and create a very special ambience. Shadows would glide over people's faces, knock against things. I'd always try to search a language to think, to describe this environment of shadows. Babli Rai - To make a mobile video, one doesn't need to go out in search of a special event or occasion. Mobile videos draw from the simplest moments of our lives. In that sense, the mobile phone camera makes one look for the special within the ordinary. A woman may wear make-up everyday. But to make a mobile video of this simple thing, makes her, her make-up and the ordinariness of that moment, special. Lakhmi Chand - One immediately thinks of a mobile video as being something personal. But mobile phone conversations, sms, photos, videos, ring tone etc have a velocity in everyday life - they get their life from being in circulation. That is why, even though mobile phones have very small screens, the staggered circulation of its images stretches their lived beyond the first moment in which they were taken. Re: [videoblogging] Flickr adds video - max length 90 seconds?
I would. becuase you just select all photos and videos and upload them. my flickr audience is different to other sites. it's my friends and family and others who like to see different places. for me it's more personal. so having clips there as well is great because I can show them the photos and the captured moments or even just what the places I'm staying in look like. the sounds too so they get a feel for the places. they don't need to go to another site to see the video. and for people eg my Mum, I bought her adsl connection but she still doesn't watch movies etc even when I send her the links. but she looks at the photos and the 90sec clips are quick to load and play / smaller files. most of my clips would be less than 90sec. if it's all in the same interface (which she's used to now uses) I think she'll watch more. sometimes I prefer viewing clips as I as the viewer get to be the editor and play them in the sequence I choose. it's nice watching others edited videos also. just different moods I suppose. (like listening to the radio or your itunes playlist/random) plus I'll use it for archiving the original short clips up there. there's heaps of video that's still on my drive and hasn't made it online or into another video. so I can upload (to watch backup). I think having them in context with my photos will be nice - my friends can see the sequential view of what I saw/heard. the test I made so far, the video looks better in flickr than on youtube (raw original file) now I just need a new plugin for iphoto so the export can include the movies. Re: [videoblogging] Re: 6 billion people
perhaps this has happened in a way already. generally I've found that in business the language is english. for a personal example, whilst working in India, Korea, Israel (Aus/NZ/UK) all the business discussions have been in english. in each place the local engineers/business people speak in their own language or more often (eg India) in english. also numbers in these places use roman numerals also, so you can always read the numbers in different places. I come from Australian yet working for UK company background, and I imagine it's similar for the Americans/Canadians. I read that India will be the largest population of english speakers within a couple of years. I've seen plenty of notices for 'learn english now' schools/classes. and even people in the street stop to talk to you to practice their english. I find it strange that we're not encouraged/forced to learn hindi (or one of the many other dialects), or hebrew or korean, but that's the 'power' of the influential western countries I suppose in business ( the dollar). (I try to learn some during visits but I'm not that good with languages). even in daily life I've found most people speak some english. so I think numbers are the universal language. but of course no one wants to use a string of numbers (or hex codes) to talk so it's not really a practical language for most people. also when you stay in places you pick up the local language or you can work out what people are talking about from gestures, where they are etc, so communication still happens even if you can't read or write or speak the local languages. you might miss out on things initially but if you're interested in the local culture and try ask questions then I've found there's no problems at all. kath On 19/03/2008, Ron Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If you posed an universal language of symbols, my guess is that a majority of Americans would think it stupid and demand that all 6 billion learned their language. -- http://www.aliak.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

yes good point. I think some of the open source CMS eg drupal have translations, but I suppose they're only as good as the translators who help with the project and provide the translations. I think it'd be difficult to cater for get it right for everyone, as there's local dialects and colloquialisms. but I suppose as long as translators are willing to assist with the work then things can only improve. maybe the corporate systems are happy enough with their current market? not sure. it's another way that other cultures are forced/suggested to use english. As you mention VD simply breaks down what would normally be a larger linear video into smaller granular clips, that are tagged and categorised on posting into the vlog. The user then uses this metadata to reassemble these clips in a customised player attached to the vlog as a page. In the end the vlog becomes a larger thematic video work made up of a bunch of smaller clips. In Adrian's rhizomes http://vogmae.net.au/drupal/doing/rhizome I think a similar type of interactivity and granularity occurs where Quicktime in this case is used as a container to bring in a number of varying content types in varying order. yeah that would be cool. shiftspace have an api so perhaps it's something that can be done now/future, not sure. they can replace images already so the view of the page via shiftspace is different to the real page. adding layers/dimensions to the web. like a stack. perhaps a layer to replace your video over all/part of it so you could quote it that way, allow part of the original to display. perhaps I gave the wrong impression - it's not just a notes/stickies plugin though that's one feature. the notes are put into a console at bottom of the screen and people can vote on shifting them up/down in the list and mark as spam etc. they display on the page when u select them they have a grant available to encourage people/projects to use it/develop more tools. could be of interest to the devs here. Re: [videoblogging] Re: SEMANAL
the only problem I have with aggregator sites using tags, is that people wanting to watch the videos or even dropping by need to know the tag to be able to see the content, and if the site isn't dedicated to the project, then there's likely to be multiple tags and possibly they are not obvious to a visitor. but a dedicated site with menus/forum threads for each week (for example) is more intuitive for them as it's more in their face and obvious. I know most of my friends (who granted probably aren't the target audience) don't know what tags are or what they're meant to do with them. but they know how to visit a website sites like facebook with forums etc and click on links. so, whilst it's probably ok for us to use, an aggregator site might not be as intuitive for regular non-web video users. also if the videos are available on a dedicated site the text blog entries/titles/comments are searchable. (eg people know how to use a search field on youtube or google). this is true for an aggregated site also, but it would return results outside the project. whereas a project site search would only search the project info. it's a lot easier to tell people goto site X having clear links/menus available on front page, rather than have to explain, goto site Y find the tags link, find tag Z and click on it, then search for the post by wading through multiple pages/dates etc. plus a dedicated site would be good for archival of the project afterwards if that's something people are thinking of (I suppose for as long as the hosting is kept up!) I don't really mind either way as my traffic/comments for videos is small anyway but not sure if others might want to consider it. if it's just a project for the group then the aggregator is ok, if people would like others to drop by then I think it has to be really simple and similar to other non-media websites navigation wise. if video tags an aggregator site are to be used, the tagged videos could populate a site in addition to being searchable via the tag on mefeedia I think it'd be good. ie have both available. kath On Jan 3, 2008 10:46 PM, Jay dedman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: There are widgets from mefeedia that can reside at Semanal.org to give a video taste of the event, and there are also a few wordpress plugins that can consume an rss feed and create posts from it. [videoblogging] [OT] Technologies of Persuasion online course with Douglas Rushkoff @ Maybe Logic Academy
hi, this is probably a bit off topic, but I thought some here might be interested in case you haven't heard about it already. Douglas Rushkoff is teaching an online course at Maybe Logic Academy starting oct 1st called Technologies of Persuasion which will be looking into media, marketing, online societies etc. I'm not related to the MLA site, but came across it via the media-squatters mail list which sent out a notice about this class. I'm now two weeks into the Philip K Dick course also offered by the site (which is really good!). http://www.maybelogic.org/rushkoffcrs.htm http://www.rushkoff.com here's the first part of the course blurb - more on the links above. This seminar will explore persuasion in a wide range of media. Our task will be to evaluate humanity's ability to maintain agency in the face of the increasingly sophisticated influence techniques used against us. Does the emergence of interactive media change the balance of power between the masses and their would-be controllers? Or does the Internet merely provide the illusion of independent thinking on yet another tightly controlled media landscape? More importantly, what is the real relationship between people, media, technology, and power? How can we come to recognize the biases of the media that we use - especially before we have committed our society to their implementation? might see some of you there? cheers Kath -- http://www.aliak.com

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Please help me with Green TV, Lori Lake
cheers Lori :) I took a quick look at the cu.naturalhome mag site and I can't say for certain, but it looks like a joomla site to me (from the look/feel/menus/sections the view html source). I'm not sure of joomla's themes - it could be a modified standard one or they could have made their own new one. the beauty of systems like joomla /drupal et al is that u can build the site yourself. and u can get something up running pretty quickly. basically u install the software, create the database tables using the scripts they give u. u download the scripts then upload to your webserver space. you just need a database eg mysql the login details (your host will give these to you) - most hosting packages include databases or have them available for a fee. then add 'modules' (drupal) / 'addons' (joomla) that give u extra features on the site. I haven't used joomla for a while, so can't remember which modules come as default. but the cu mag site looks like it's got modules such as gallery spotlight (the video on frontpage). many of the other features like comments, bulletin boards, event listings etc may come as default or be addon modules which u can plugin. (which basically means to upload the code files and enable the module/addon in your admin page, then configure it's options if it has any also from your admin page) there's usually a few default 'themes' (drupal) / 'templates' (joomla) which u can try - these change the way the site looks (eg some might be different css themes). u can always customise these make your own to make your site look different to the default joomla sites. (u can write your own modules also customise existing ones if u need something different for your site) the hardest part is usually deciding on which modules to use and how you want the site to be used and look. u might try posting in one of the joomla site forums as that's usually where the people building joomla sites will hang out. there's often calls for help in building sites. if someone else does it for you they may require payment. eg, here's one for non-profit organisations. http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/board,153.0.html there's a few joomla books also (listed on their site) and online documentation etc. as a suggestion, take a look through the Free Addons page ( http://www.joomla.org/content/blogcategory/20/37/) and the Commercial Addons page (http://www.joomla.org/content/blogcategory/22/38/) (both available from the News page via menus/sidebar) and see what sort of features you'd want to add. because the clearer you can be in specifying what u want, the easier it'll be for someone to help u build it. similarly look at the Templates pages for ideas on how the site will look / be arranged. joomla powered sites : examples http://www.joomla.org/content/blogcategory/35/69/ --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com videoblogging%40yahoogroups.com, greentvgirl [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Kath, my head is now spinning which actually is a good thing! Re: [videoblogging] Please help me with Green TV, Lori Lake
Hi Lori, it might be worth using a Content Management System (CMS) for your site so it's easy to update and for people to post articles/media/comments. from the layout / sections on your current site, I think a CMS would be the way to go. I use one called drupal (http://www.drupal.org) which is great for community sites and it's free to use (as in cost). there's a sister project called CivicSpace also, which is based on drupal but some people find it easier to setup (~ more of an out-of-the-box solution). (http://civicspacelabs.org) there are many others available also. eg joomla (http://www.joomla.org/), plone (http://plone.org/). a CMS comparison site which may be handy for you if you want to see/compare the features is at CMS Matrix (http://www.cmsmatrix.org/). I guess you'd need to make a list of what features you want/need first/as u go. and think about things such as where you want the media contributions hosted - on your site or remotely link them in / bandwidth / traffic considerations. some community sites use wordpress / blogging systems also and these can also be effective. the freevlog.org site has details tutorials on how to setup a videoblog site so that may be useful for you too. if you just want to link to youtube/blip.tv videos then you could just add the code directly to your site, though it's not really interactive so probably not what you're after. ( I notice you already have this in the howto video sections) cheers Kath I write to find how Green TV could make a great interactive site and the reason is not my existing Green TV web site or content. Since going live on the internet less than 1-year ago, I have had people from all over the globe asking how they could contribute their green photos and/or videos (ranging from amateurs to architects, local politicians to government leaders, educators to media) -- http://www.aliak.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

the absolute least we can do is push for them other sites to put a -1 on their stats for posts such as this. the amount of attention this has received has probably mean their # hits/views has increased. if people could push an 'I object don't count my view as a hit' protest button that would be a start. cos perhaps they'll look at the numbers in future and forget about the subject of the video, and make more $ off this. :( --- stbdpittsburgh [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Gena mentioned the following point: There will be other videos like this. Re: [videoblogging] Re: the ugly truth about online video
(late reply) I think one day people will be shooting / making video / media as stringers and sell that to people who need video / media, likely businesses who can afford to pay. another layer to news program's stringers/freelancers but on any topic, not just news. ala Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. so people will be taking videos for themselves and to upload and be paid if someone uses/downloads it. when archive.org started I was reminded of this also - The Library - a collection of clips from creative minds people uploading as they will. so the utubes and googles et al will become clip libraries. most will be noise, but some will be useful for others. it happens in a small way now, how many of you have had people see a clip or video and ask if they can use it? similar with photos. eg I've had people see a photo and remember a place or a personal memory and ask if they can use it. after a while of people posting videos / photos / media - patterns will develop and certain topics / styles / genres will be sought after. anything is possible - the niches, the popularist content, the everyday life, the world around us. in the future when the world is different people will want to see how it was. I wonder also if it'll affect our memories the way our brains connect thoughts images as the ease of storing photos/videos to trigger memories is different now to even say 30 years ago, but that's probably another thread. I wonder then if it'll lead to obsession ala until the end of the world when Claire became obsessed with watching her recorded dreams on her portable video player. I think the two ideas (book/movie) will merge expand. I think this has all been mentioned here before - a while ago.. so a refresher. but, I think it's getting closer. especially with google etc their searching capabilities and tagging / metadata so common place these days. if I were a big business this is the way I'd be going anyway. kath ,___ extract from Snow Crash (by Neal Stephenson) about the library.. The business is a simple one. Hiro gets information. It may be gossip, videotape, audiotape, a fragment of a computer disk, a xerox of a document. It can even be a joke based on the latest highly publicized disaster. He uploads it to the CIC database -- the Library, formerly the Library of Congress, but no one calls it that anymore. Most people are not entirely clear on what the word congress means. And even the word library is getting hazy. It used to be a place full of books, mostly old ones. Then they began to include videotapes, records, and magazines. Then all of the information got converted into machine-readable form, which is to say, ones and zeroes. And as the number of media grew, the material became more up to date, and the methods for searching the Library became more and more sophisticated, it approached the point where there was no substantive difference between the Library of Congress and the Central Intelligence Agency. Fortuitously, this happened just as the government was falling apart anyway. So they merged and kicked out a big fat stock offering. Millions of other CIC stringers are uploading millions of other fragments at the same time. CIC's clients, mostly large corporations and Sovereigns, rifle through the Library looking for useful information, and if they find a use for something that Hiro put into it, Hiro gets paid. A year ago, he uploaded an entire first-draft film script that he stole from an agent's wastebasket in Burbank. Half a dozen studios wanted to see it. He ate and vacationed off of that one for six months. Since then, times have been leaner. He has been learning the hard way that 99 percent of the information in the Library never gets used at all. -- http://www.aliak.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [videoblogging] Re: the ugly truth about online video
oh, also, which is why I think ads on videos is an old media way of thinking. like ads on tv. (which will phase into product placements soon enough). people will still use them now whilst they make money from them but I don't think they'll be necessary or used in future as they'll be regarded as spam. similar to what was mentioned earlier, people ignore spam on the net now, so in the future when the generations change, they'll lose their power. the information / message will be the currency. hopefully the creative mind! :) On 8/5/07, Kath O'Donnell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: (late reply) I think one day people will be shooting / making video / media as stringers and sell that to people who need video / media, likely businesses who can -- http://www.aliak.com

it's interesting though how this list has changed.. when I first joined, the threads were shorter and the conversations were done on video and there was less text. whatever happened to that. awards seem strange for personal media to me also. awards/more people seem to lead to increased business-like behaviour, a more traditional mail list and less video conversations? are they all on utube now in video responses perhaps. On 7/24/07, Rupert [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yeah, I know what you mean - I'm not a huge fan of awards shows either (except when I win lots of money by betting on the Oscars), but I don't like the idea of community awards - I'd rather they were handled by Podtech (or whoever) and treated honestly for what they are. Whatever community love Irina brought to the table, that thing you quoted from the wiki just goes to show that Awards Shows are pretty much a commercial concept at heart. They're not a level-playing-field community thing to reward individuals for individual artistic achievement. Popular shows win, because they get more votes. Popular shows tend to be commercial show concepts rather than, say, personal videoblogs. So in the end the main benefactors of awards are popular shows who can then put up banners saying Winner of 5 vloggies and tell that to their viewers and the press. That might help Ask A Ninja or Galacticast or Ze Frank who benefit from being seen by the maximum number of people because they have mass appeal. Personally, i don't feel that if I won an award (best shouting into a cellphone camera on the streets of London?) it would boost my audience in any lasting way, since the very few people who want to watch and subscribe to some british tit shouting into his phone over the internet are pretty much going to find me anyway. I like my community to be without judgement and ranking. I don't want my community to tell me that there's some other london cellphone shouter they like more than me, or to tell that person that they like me more. What does that mean? It probably means the winner was able to marshal more friends and family to go online and vote. So I'd prefer it if we didn't have a community awards. I'm quite happy for Podtech and the corporate mass-appeal boys and girls to do their commercial Awards thing and compete for promotional opportunities, while the rest of us just get on with making our videos and connecting with people, for whatever bizarre reasons. Then if any awards drop out of the sky, it's easier to accept them while taking a moment to be humble enough to know that it doesn't mean we're the best at anything - just that some people voted. Re: [videoblogging] Local Vlog screenings (was: Weekly Video Conference)
video volunteers in india do this sort of thing - the community (usually women!) make video magazines and take them to the villages and show them on outdoor screens (usually) - so the videos can be seen by around 1 people per month. topics are generally community issues things people want to share with others. they are on the net too but more people in the villages see them at a screening as internet access is less accessible. http://videovolunteers.org/ indymedia often have screenings also - usually activist based films/videos, some have been downloaded off the net or distributed to other collectives via dvd/downloads. same for festivals - arts/music/film festivals - small large. also the pecha kucha nights and dorkbot nights sometimes show videos (sometimes synced to music too). they're cool get togethers and happen in many cities/countries are for people to show off/share their projects/work. you can always hire a projector for the night if the expense is too much to purchase outright. also, at zine festivals/stalls and markets you can often pick up/purchase dvds/vcds of people's movies. another option for people's videos if they want to move past the internet. Date: Mar 17, 2007 7:52 PM Subject: [Air-l] Video Vortex (conference and list); Responses to YouTube To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Video Vortex Conference: November 30 and December 1 2007, Amsterdam (NL) Organized by the Institute of Network Cultures First announcement (shorter air version), March 16, 2007 More on the Event: http://www.networkcultures.org/videovortex/ List info: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/videovortex_listcultures.org In response to the increasing potential for video to become a significant form of personal media on the Internet, this conference examines the key issues that are emerging around the independent production and distribution of online video content. What are artists and activists responses to the popularity of 'user-generated content' websites? Is corporate backlash eminent? After years of talk about digital conversions and crossmedia platforms we are now witnessing the merger of the Internet and television at a pace that no one predicted. For the baby boom generation, that currently forms the film and television establishment, the media organisations and conglomerates, this unfolds as a complete nightmare. Not only because of copyright issues but increasingly due to the shift of audience to vlogging and video-sharing websites as part of the development of a broader participatory culture. The opening night will feature live acts, performances and lectures under the banner of video slamming. We will trace the history from short film to one-minute videos to the first experiments with streaming media and online video, along with exploring the way VJs and media artists are accessing and using online archives. The Video Vortex conference aims to contextualize these latest developments through presenting continuities and discontinuities in the artistic, activist and mainstream perspective of the last few decades. Unlike the way online video presents itself as the latest and greatest, there are long threads to be woven into the history of visual art, cinema and documentary production. The rise of the database as the dominant form of storing and accessing cultural artifacts has a rich tradition that still needs to be explored. The conference aims to raise the following questions: - How are people utilising the potential to independently produce and distribute independent video content on the Internet? - What are the alternatives to the proprietary standards currently being developed? - What are the commercial objectives that mass media is imposing on user-generated content and video-sharing databases? - What is the underlying economics of online video in the age of unlimited uploads? - How autonomous are vloggers within the broader domain of mass media? - How are cinema, television and video art being affected by the development of a ubiquitous online video practice? - What type of aesthetic and narrative issues does the database pose for online video practice? Conference themes: Viral Video critique Vlogging Critique Participatory Culture, Participatory Video Real World Tools and Technologies Theory History of the Database Narrative and the Cinematic Database Taxonomy and Navigation Internet Video: Art, Activism, and Public Media Evening Programme / Exhibition (see website for details) Video Vortex Discussion List: With this discussion list we like to gather responses to the rise of YouTube and similar online video databases. What does YouTube tell us about the state of art in visual culture? Is YouTube the corporate media structure of the 21st century? What are the artist responses to YouTube aesthetics? Re: [videoblogging] I am so disappointed in You all.
hey Paul, I tried making a new digg story as per below, but it came up saying this was a duplicate to http://digg.com/videos_comedy/Comic_relief_17_2_2007/blog when I tried to submit (your entry?). so I just clicked the digg it button on the one already on digg.com. it seems to have worked when I did submit anyway (not sure if they like this or prefer to stick to one article): http://digg.com/videos/comedy/pjkproductions_30_day_video_joke_athon_to_support_Comic_Relief/blog is digg mostly for USA stories? (I don't check it much so am not sure). maybe u want to post on the bbc/radio1 website blogs or newspaper/tv channel blogs or any other uk community sites you're a member of for more uk response. time out site? or comedy club message boards? or if the local pubs have a noticeboard maybe put up a flyer with the url for people to take home and try. pubs jokes seem to go together? and office jokes email lists. (I've just deleted mine so don't have a joke for you sorry - friday is usually the day they are sent round). On 2/18/07, Paul Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: 1. Re: [videoblogging] I am so disappointed in You all.
oh sorry, also do u have one of those 'digg this' links on your site - I couldn't see it but perhaps having one would remind people to digg the blog entries without them having to goto digg site and find/make a new story on it. if there is one that I missed, post the link in your email perhaps? Re: [videoblogging] Re: MyHeavy.com, a call for discussion on proper re-vlogging ettiquette
you almost need a 'taste' attribute with an opt-in override (user based in addition to site) in the rss feed that the user/creator can fillin when they post their work /or as a sitewide option (so if u added another optin u wouldn't need to go back an update all the existing postings) licence= +non_commercial +non_dating_site +opt-in=fireant +opt-in=itunes add a parental rating option for those wanting to use that also then the dating sites (eg heavy) have their dating_site=1 flag set in their aggregator software/system and if they do pull in feeds from other sources, they would skip over the entries with non_dating_site set. each aggregator has their name set eg fireant, itunes to do the opt-in matching get the rss feed/aggregators to do some of the filtering for you give the user some more control. just need some spec/code changes but over time it might improve things. (soft drm?) then you'd just need another option (default?) for others who don't want to set these attributes to keep those people happy also something like this is probably already available? I haven't read the rss spec so just pondering atm. if it is, perhaps the issue is more that it's not easy for the user to specify when they post/at site level to a finer level of detail Kath -- http://www.aliak.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

have an opt-out also for users to opt out of whole sites eg heavy opt-out=heavy.com On 1/6/07, Kath O'Donnell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: you almost need a 'taste' attribute with an opt-in override (user based in addition to site) in the rss feed that the user/creator can fillin when they post their work /or as a sitewide option (so if u added another optin u wouldn't need to go back an update all the existing postings) licence= +non_commercial +non_dating_site +opt-in=fireant +opt-in=itunes [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

ahh. namespaces. for extending rss spec. is that an option - for blip or the videoblogging community to define it's own namespaces then work with other aggregators so they support them also? http://www.rssboard.org/rss-specification#extendingRss http://www.disobey.com/detergent/2002/extendingrss2/ On 1/6/07, Kath O'Donnell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: have an opt-out also for users to opt out of whole sites eg heavy opt-out=heavy.com On 1/6/07, Kath O'Donnell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: you almost need a 'taste' attribute with an opt-in override (user based in addition to site) in the rss feed that the user/creator can fillin when they post their work /or as a sitewide option (so if u added another optin u wouldn't need to go back an update all the existing postings) licence= +non_commercial +non_dating_site +opt-in=fireant +opt-in=itunes -- http://www.aliak.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [videoblogging] Re: MyHeavy.com, a call for discussion on proper re-vlogging ettiquette
thanks, I just found the mediarss info also and can see the rating and restrictions already in place, so I should have researched prior to emailing off the top of my head. I noticed you're listed on the working group contributors for the spec Andreas. is the group working on having other sites/aggregators implement the tags at the other end also? and making it easier for people to fill in the appropriate fields so they are of use if populated. thanks Mike for your comments. http://search.yahoo.com/mrss On 1/6/07, Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: No, existing standard cover this space sufficiently. Re: [videoblogging] OT max/msp (was Re: question for Macbook Pro owners)
cheers. yeah I've tried pd on windows a couple of years back prior to trying max but I preferred the interface of max. good idea - I might give it a shot on the mac to see if it's better these days. hi, sounds like a good project to support so I tried to pledge and the fundable site came back with an error: Your payment did not go through The following problem occurred: Transaction ended prematurely. [my paypal account][] This may indicate that * your credit card number is not valid. * your credit card's expiration date is not valid. * your billing address is not valid or does not match the credit card you entered. Please try again using one of the following payment methods: - the amount showed up in my paypal account ok though (as pending transaction as expected), but sounds like it didn't complete at fundable. I have an Australian paypal account. does fundable only work with US ones? my paypal works ok - used it successfully yesterday so I don't think it's a problem with my account/credit card. is fundable looking for a US credit card number range perhaps? anyone else having a problem? cheers Kath SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use Explains YAHOO! Re: [videoblogging] Re: transparency
cheers. I'll try that. I sent an email to fundable also. maybe there was a server problem at the time. I'd e-mail Jay directly. He can probably login to fundable directly and check if your donation got recorded propery or not. SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use Explains YAHOO!
