Hi Julian, First a BIG Thanx to Jules, Gena, and David for the advice that pointed me in the right direction. As you know, the amount of product avail is overwhelming and that's just on amazon ebay. So I thought I'd address 2 issues with one purchase, if possible, as I do need primarily to address the video issue but thought I could also get a suitable replacement for the Canon point-n-shoot that had a coronary last month. Maybe not possible in one lo price unit, but that's ok. So I've looked into the Zi8 which amazon has on a special price with xtras thrown in to cement the deal. They are also offering the CG10 at about $124. and that looks pretty good too. Getting past newer/older tech, looks(professional if possible), and price. not too much to ask for, I mean I figure you ask for the sky and negotiate from there. Anyway, after reading tons of reviews, some from very angry camera owners, I really need to be sure that the images in the camera can be seen on the client's computer either PC or Mac with very little fumbling around. Or God forbid, crashing the system. Oy! All of you have been stellar. Thanx again and if you have any thoughts pleze add them. Thanx for taking the time to explain that Adrian, I guess I'll select 'quick start' when I convert. I use Quick Time Pro to convert from iMovie to a QT movie which I then upload to YouTube, blip and a few others. My files have been very large, even after following the advice of a very popular vid-blogger. I don't like the resolution that he apparently finds acceptable. But thru trial error just the other day, I discovered a combo of selections that reduced my file size to about 1/3 size with ok acceptable rez. Anyway, I was happy about that. Again, Thanx. I think flattening only interleaves the data so that it is 'packed' into the file format in the most efficient way for playback. For fast start the object is to let the video be able to begin playing before all the media has arrived (aka fast start). This was (and is) an innovation as in the early days of video, unless you were using RTSP, the entire media file would have to be delivered before it could play. With long and large files this was a nuisance. It might sound obvious, but it wasn't at the time. (Imagine being able to start reading a very large Word doc in Word, that was online, before all the pages had arrived, that's what flattening - and fast start - help to achieve). an appropriate closing Adrian Miles School of Media and Communication Program Director B.Comm Honours vogmae.net.au On 7 June 2010 10:21, Tom Dolan tomjdo...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Can someone tell me the meaning of: Flattened movie or video file? Re: [videoblogging] Docu-promo Or Documentary?
Hey Mark, Seems like you've got a good subject and after reading the enclosed letter my initial reaction is that you may be complicating it, unnecessarily. Don't be too clever with the approach. Lay out the issues visually, offer the audience some solutions, then refer them to your organization for further info, training, resources, etc. Be straightforward honest upfront. A conflict exists, an issue to be dealt with or whatever. An observation I've made is some people reject criticism of both their kids and their pets. I say that to assure you that some in the audience will be disapprove, so what, but you'll also make friends, and so there you are. Either way doesn't deny the need for a compromise/resolution/solution. Good Luck. Tom Dolan On Apr 6, 2010, at 10:16 AM, Mark Villaseñor wrote: Hi Group: Bear with me while I run down a situation..? Or given our subject matter and overt purpose behind TailTrex.tv (TTTV), shoot a short (30 to 60 minute) stand alone hybrid documentary. Hybrid meaning; it would promote our nonprofit aims very subtly, by way of a TTTV logo watermark and invitation (call to action) just before end credits. Stand alone meaning; the piece would have its own website and identity, available to the public free of charge (via Blip.tv and related ads). The TTTV purpose is to provide educational resources through visual media to the dog owning public, regarding proper dog handling on public lands. That is, in part, because the vast majority of dog owners are clueless to the facts. Thus the aim behind either course, docu-promo or documentary, would be to detail the need for education. Even so the dog on public lands is a controversial subject to some on both sides of the equation -- for and against -- while others are clueless without opinion. The TTTV effort is a revenue center, which means the more traffic the more we can serve our ultimate aims of facilitating disabled access, into wild places. So frankly; a little controversy and related web-buzz is fine by me (especially with 50 million US dog owners as the target market). Hence; my gut is saying go for a harder hitting documentary style of presenting the issues. Yet being a new-be to Vlogging I'm uncertain. Here's my question... Would you agree or disagree with my hunch to play toward the natural controversial subject matter aspects, by a more formal documentary style? Or would you suggest approaching it softer through a milder docu-promo angle? Thanks in advance for all constructive comments. Hi Rupert, If I can break into this conversation between you andRupert, I'd like to say that in the situation you're describing, I don't think stereo audio is an issue. I capture my video podcast audio with a mono lavaliere and convert with QT Pro and the results are very good. The audio goes in as mono but comes out as mono in both channels. You can check my podcast if you like and hear for yourself. I've just opened it up so it still needs some content but please check it out. Re: [videoblogging] how many video accounts do you have
Hi Chad, You question got me to thinking. As I'm just about to launch my video blog, I decided to try to coordinate my online presence under one name/ i.d/banner, etc. Thinking it would be ez for folks to find me here-n- there. After a cursory look at both your accounts, they are a 'potpourri' of general info. On the other hand, what of this new blog? Maybe it should have a home of its own. A look and feel, disconnected from your current offerings. Are you considering developing this blog into some sort of venture, or adventure that needs to stand on its own? If so, make it so. So, that's the plan today, my visitors feedback may change my mind. So I have a question, and I'm wondering about tubemogul as a distributor to everyone else? blip sez they will connect me to iTunes, but it seems the tubemogul connects me to everyone with a single upload. Any experience or advice along these lines? Good luck Chad and keep us posted. Tom Feb 15, 2010, at 7:54 AM, Chad Boeninger wrote: So perhaps a bizarre question. A video blog should be all about the video (ok audio is super important too, but beside the point), the bigger and more glorious the source material the better. Try watching 320x240 full screen... I know people who watch my video blog like a TV show and put it on full screen while having their breakfast etc. The beauty of modern hosts like YouTube are that it offers whatever resolution the user desires. I now always shoot and upload in 1280x720 because: a) I have the camera that can do it b) People have different needs (and bandwidth isn't an issue for probably the majority of people these days) c) And you never know what the future holds. I didn't want to look back in a few years and wish I had shot those previous hundred episodes in HD for whatever reason. Any video blogger who is filming and/or uploading in 320x240 only is doing their effort a real disservice I think. My $400 HD cam was the best money I ever spent. Dave. Re: [videoblogging] Remember when it was all 320x240?
Hi Rupert, Good perspective. Thank you. My blog is almost ready for prime time and to test the workings of videos I downloaded 2 videos that I had parked on YouTube. I'm pretty impressed with the simplicity of the embed and the quite nice functioning of the videos. I've been preparing to use blip and one of the reasons was because they seem to be an entryway to iTunes. What about that? Also, I'm not really into coding although I've been directed to make some changes with wordPress and I've been fine with it. Where exactly would I post showinfo=0 in the embed code to clean-up the player? Thanx, and btw, the video of the Alexander Tech. is nice: calm, honest, conversational. Tom Dolan On Feb 5, 2010, at 5:05 PM, Rupert Howe wrote: I am finding fewer and fewer reasons to avoid YouTube. YouTube's quality now is as good as Blip - better than their flvs, in fact - the new layout on their pages is good, and so are their sharing options. Get round the bad bits by turning off comments and ratings, and add showinfo=0 to your embed code to remove the ugly text title star rating from the embedded player. I just made a 1 minute profile video for my wife's business, and embedded it on her home page as a YouTube player. It looks good. You can see it at: http://londonalexandertechnique.co.uk/ Previously I would have used Blip for this, but they and Vimeo now prohibit you from publishing any videos which promote businesses. I think I'm going to be using YouTube a lot more from now on, for everything. You can just add a 1080p file (along with lots of other formats) when you upload. Thats why blip is good. They are almost completely format agnostic. For instance, I use always blip when I need to post an mp3. I didn't know this kinda thing was even possible. Is there anything we as a group can do to assist Dave with this? Is this a common occurrence? Re: [videoblogging] Turnhere free videos
Hi All, Been looking @ some video blog sites and comparing to the one I'm building. I've imported two short videos I made, from YouTube just to chk compatibility, etc. They appear in a list format on the Home page/ Blog and I can add commentary if I choose so far so good. But now, I've been looking at other vid-blogs and some have a Player with selections in a list connected to the player either under the Player or to the side of the Player. Do you think that's a better format than the more traditional 'blog' style where each is listed in its own space? I know, content is important, nevertheless, I'd like to give the visitor a format that is user friendly but surprise them with the content. Opinions pleze. BTW, Richard Harrington likes lijit. So I checked it out. Thought OK, so I installed configured it as small, non-intrusive, no ads. Kinda neat, but the search on my site either had ads, or worse, if the subject was not found on my site it offered off-site locations...excse me! I deactivated the plugin, wrote lijit support with ??'s and awaiting response. I don't want ads at least for awhile. So back to WordPress Search for now and I'm ok with it. Any experience w/lijit or opinions? Inspirational Vid-blogs I should check-out? Thanx. Tom Dolan tomjdo...@gmail.com

Hi Jim, You know, this whole adventure is so new, and so I'm advancing a little more cautiously than I normally would. Actually, with so much bad/cautionary Press re: the web, I find it difficult to 'trust' unknowns. I did get into lijit quite late last nite and I'll take a look at it more closely. You can configure the search results to default to your own blog initially and then to your network of friends and their blogs, then to the web etc. I am curious whether you also waited until the reports are sent out on Sunday evening. It provides valuable information about what searches brought people to your site, searches that people made on your site that do not provide results etc. The Lijit search function also allows people to get to other related search results within your site that might also interest them It will increase your page views from that standpoint. It may be that they can turn off ads on your search results and they actually have a revenue share from that end. I'll let them answer your questions directly and I know Tara Anderson and her staff would be happy to answer all the questions to your satisfaction. If not let me know and I will help where I can. [videoblogging] camera features
Hey Group-folk, In preparation for a visit to the photo shop next week, I'd like to run some features by you and pleze comment if you can. I'll be shooting for the web, to put in web sites, mine and maybe others. I'll edit in iMovie'09 on an intel iMac. I've been thinking future=Flash memory, but many Tape cameras are still made like the VIXIA HV40. Is Tape worth considering?? People complain about motor noise in the audio. How will I know if the motor noise is being captured or not? Will an in store test tell me? Is AVCHD difficult to work with/download.and finally is HD necessary or preferable for web viewing? BTW, the Sanyo specs look good but the form factor discourages me. Gotta move forward with my project so thanx for the input/feedback. [videoblogging] camera
Hey Vid-folk, I had an interesting idea and I want to run it by you. A local but large pro camera shop might take in trade, a complete Pentax 35mm outfit. Xcellent condition, lenses, motor, etc... towards something else. I won't get what I think it's worth but I might be offered enuf to let it go. Now, Here's the conundrum: at different price levels starting lo and ending at about $6/800..(OK so I'm optimistic), what would you suggest I consider? It's got to work with iMac-iMovie'09, have an external mic, and I prefer flash memory over tape/hard-drive. BTW, I was surprised to see a Sanyo model mentioned here several times. I don't see them featured on the review sites, usually the same canon/sony/pana/etc stuff. My 1st 16mm camera was a Sanyo and it was pretty good. So what video cameras would YOU trade the 35mm system for? and I'm not into the Flip style camera for now. Go for it...and Thanx. Tom Dolan tomjdo...@gmail.com
Re: [videoblogging] Winkball.com - new British vlogging service
Hey Jay, I'm sittin here reading Steve's book when a thought occurs. My father- in-law gave me a Sharp video camera when we left Japan to return to the US. It's a Hi8 camera with all the menus in Japanese, but Masako translated them for me so I could use the camera. The output is Hi8 tape of course with RCA cables too. I stopped using it because I figured the world is digital and time has passed it by. But maybe I could still use it...thinkin budget. Of course if it required an expensive converter of some sort I'd rather put the money into a new camera...any thoughts. Also, I am making the vid-pod in my studio using the iSight on the iMac. Looks ok so far. Would I get any noticeable increase in production values if I got the Logitech webcam for Mac?
