Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

2012-06-22 Thread Kristeen Hughes
And I can't tell you how many times VO doesn't just stop talking the way screen
readers do and when it does you hardly have time to notice before it's back and
running. There's a world of difference between Voiceover which is built right
into the operating system and any other screen reader with Windows.

I agree with John, if you don't like the Mac, at least let it be because you've
actually used one and know something about it to dislike.

Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

2012-06-22 Thread Andy Baracco
A few months ago, my Windows PC died, and i had to make a decision about
what to buy. I priced an iMac with the specs I wanted, along with a Dell
machine. The Mac would have run me $2300. The Dell with a few discounts
ran me under $1000, and had superior specs. I already owned a windows
screen reader, so that was a non issue. I went for the Dell. i just
couldn't justify spending over double the price just to be cool.

What are we talking about here? Macs versus PC's or cell phones?

People are saying Macs are cheaper then PC's with screen readers, but I
think each person needs to do their own research here and their own
addition. I noticed no one has tossed out any numbers. Screen readers
for Windows run from free to $1K. Depending on what you need to do the
free screen reader may be completely sufficient. Macs do cost more than
PC's when talking about equivalent performance. People need to do their
own research to find out if the Mac they want will cost $1K more than a
comparable PC or not.

The quality of customer service and support is another totally
subjective point. Not all PC's come from the same manufacturer, so you
can't categorically say that Apple's customer service and support is
better than any PC maker across the board.

The quality of the screen reader is also totally subjective and
dependent on the tasks you need to accomplish with it. To say that one
is second rate or that another is superior is just an opinion.

Contrary to popular belief and Apple's propaganda, Apple's and Macs are
not immune from viruses.

Also, I have a Symbian phone for 10 years, and neither Talks nor Mobile
Speak cost $390, so I'm not sure where that number comes from. Talks was
around $300, and you could get Mobile Speak for about $100 from AT&T.

IMHO, these debates are fruitless, especially when no numbers or facts
are even being used or incorrect facts/numbers are tossed out. It's also
highly off topic for this list, at least in my opinion. Nothing good can
come from these discussions, and each person needs to decide what is
best for them. This isn't always the same answer for each person, and
that's OK. No one needs to defend their decision or put down any one
else's decision.

overpriced they may be, but their quality (and warrantee service) are

for mobile speak or talks on a microsoft device (which, itself, may be
overpriced)?

I have no love for MS products. they were never intended to have any
accessibility built in (again, you need to pay out extra for that and it
is often more than most blind/VI people can afford).

I have 2 phones here: an iPhone 3GS and a HTC Dash_3G. I like the
responsiveness and ease of use the iPhone offers. I had to spend $390 just
to make the dash accessible, and that even required a sighted person to
set it up for me. believe me, given the choice, I would rather use linux
or OS X and to hell with MS products.

Oh!Ok, you double tap and hold and when it says moving, slide
finger
about until it's on top of another app, one you'd like to hide with the
one
you're moving; then lift finger and it'll make the noise and ask you for
a

folder name, though it puts one in by default and you have to change it.
But once done, you can go back to the main screen, dt&H to move something
else and drop it on top of the new folder and it goes in there. I think
there's a limit of 4/folder; but it is a good start.

Might also be that you got too many apps to fit in the available slots; so
can only be found with a search. Shovel more into folders to clear space?
You can increase density quite a lot with that.

I really just think you through that comment in just to start a flame, but I

notation

2012-06-22 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to create printed musical notation
from the mac/iOS?

I have windows available to me, but I'd rather not use it if I didn't have
to.

I've had a play with Lillypond but it seemed extremely complex considering
what I want to do.

I honestly wish the music programs like Sibelius were accessible. Voiceover
just crashes when I try and use it.

I have used Sibelius under windows and it works well, but under a VM which
is how I have windows set up on my laptop, I'm not sure how it would work
and I need it to be perfect.

Also if anyone has suggestions for an iOS app that might be worth looking
at, I'd really appreciate it.

If no one has any ideas I'll keep researching and let everyone know what I
find.

Thanks.

Scott

Hello Everyone,

Maybe I'm missing something here but when I open up FireFox, I get a
message

saying that I am logged into Web Visum.

I have not yet modified the host file.

Yet, when I try to go to their website, it appears as though the domain is
up for grabs.

Do I still need to modify the host file?

Is there a recommended website for testing whether web visum is still
working?

All replies welcomed.

All,

A cautionary note, this resolves the immediate problem, the expired

domain.

It in no way guarantees that the service will continue to function
into the future. If some one on this list knows those behind the
scenes with Webvisum, this would be the time to contact them with
offers of encouragement and support. What would it take to fully
restore and maintain the service? If you have a means of reaching the
maintainers please do so and please contact me off list:
len.bu...@gmail.com I would be very willing to directly assist with this

if I knew who to contact.

Hi all.

Here's a way how to make Webvisum working again.

Edit this file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

At the end of this fyle type this:

204.14.19.231 api.webvisum.com

Save the file and restart your browser...

Now WebVisum will work again normally.

Ok, I am streaming a Phillies game. I have the volume up full blast and I
can now hear all of the VO instructions without the ear phones but I cannot
hear the game itself, with or without ear phones. I use At Bat regularly and
I am sure the game is streaming because the "stop audio" is my highlighted
choice.

Can what you're saying to do with music also work, say, with a baseball game
I am streaming? Does it h ave to be downloaded music for some reason, or any

With your earphones unplugged, do a two fingered double tap to get music
playing. Voice Over is tied into the media volume, and I have had this
exact same thing happen. Then keep pressing the volume up key until the
volume is back to where it needs to be.

Looks like you figured it out. Gotcha added now.
Personally, when I enter text into a field that doesn't appear to have an
obvious Search button, I double-tap whatever button happens to be in the lower
right-hand corner of the keyboard. Even if it's just a Return key, it should
still submit your search in this case.

I think the two finger double tap pauses and restarts music. I don't
think it'll start playing music if you haven't already started it up in
the Music app or maybe other music apps as well.

RE: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

Thank you John, for saying what I thought! I don't have enough experience
with a Mac to dispute what was said here, but from what I've seen, Voiceover
is certainly not second rate! I believe it's every bit as good as JFW!

You obviously didn't do a lot of research.

1. Over priced compared to what? And what do you get for the price? How
about that screen reader cost too? How many times will you have to deal
with viruses? How many reinstalls of the OS will you have to deal with?
2. VoiceOver is equal and, in some cases, superior to any Windows screen
reader.

Try using a Mac with sufficient knowledge and capabilities before you
start make blanket statements, please.

Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

2012-06-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain

Oh wow, this game is completely nuts. lol
I couldn't quit playing it until I finally died after level 18.
To bad you can't have multiple zombies at once or a better selection of
weapons though.

Take care.

All,
This game is called Where's my Rubber Ducky.
You use 3D audio, put your headphones in, spin around
and tab the screen the shoot zombies that are walking toward you.
It is free in the app store. It uses the compass and
GPS to tell how you are turning and what direction your facing.
I am downloading it now because it sounds fun and is
free so why not.
Here is where I found it

2012-06-22 Thread Jakob Rosin
hi.
i'm a very new mac user. I moved to mac this week's monday. so i've been using
the mac for 4 days now.
it is different. so different that I can't describe it in one mail.
I can say thoug, that I haven't tried to go to my windows computer yet. I do
like mac, and it does things what I need (msn, skype, mail, twitter, web
browsing) very well.
i've used it so litttle, that I can't tell much right now.
I've heard that the text processing isn't so good as it is on windows. as I
need to write lots of text at school, I decided to install windows on my mac
book air with bootcamp as second OS to do my school stuff on it.

overpriced they may be, but their quality (and warrantee service) are
definitely loads better. besides, why should I have to spend $400 or more for
mobile speak or talks on a microsoft device (which, itself, may be overpriced)?

I have no love for MS products. they were never intended to have any
accessibility built in (again, you need to pay out extra for that and it is
often more than most blind/VI people can afford).

I have 2 phones here: an iPhone 3GS and a HTC Dash_3G. I like the
responsiveness and ease of use the iPhone offers. I had to spend $390 just to
make the dash accessible, and that even required a sighted person to set it up
for me. believe me, given the choice, I would rather use linux or OS X and to

You obviously didn't do a lot of research.

1. Over priced compared to what? And what do you get for the price? How
about that screen reader cost too? How many times will you have to deal with
viruses? How many reinstalls of the OS will you have to deal with?
2. VoiceOver is equal and, in some cases, superior to any Windows screen
reader.

Try using a Mac with sufficient knowledge and capabilities before you
start make blanket statements, please.

You're not a Mac user then!

A Mac is cheaper than a win Pc and separate screen reader. I know there's
free ones, and you suggest Mac is second rate? but we manage, some how.

I learnt on DOS, NEVER GOT OVER IT!

All,
This game is called Where's my Rubber Ducky.

All,

A cautionary note, this resolves the immediate problem, the expired
domain.
It in no way guarantees that the service will continue to function into

Webvisum, this would be the time to contact them with offers of
encouragement and support. What would it take to fully restore and
maintain

the service? If you have a means of reaching the maintainers please do so

Hi,

It might have gone to other home screen pages. From home screen, do three
finger flick left until you get to the last home screen and try finding the app
there.

Cheers,

RE: Tactile Screen Overlay, Or Not?

2012-06-22 Thread Rose Combs
The otterbox has a hard membrane on the front, I already had screen
protectors applied to my phone, so I have two and it works just fine.

Personally, I generally clip the phone into that clip, and clip it to my
pocket but, I put the phone part inside the pocket, seems to work better for
me anyway, does not get bumped as often and I feel more secure with it as
generally it would fall into my pocket. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago
I caught the back part of the clip on a chair arm and the phone went flying
despite actually being in my pocket, Thank goodness for the Otterbox, it
works just fine. I don't wear tight jeans, and if I do, I either have my
purse where I can clip it to the inside portion, or a fanny pack where I can
put it in a zippered compartment minus the clip.

Your milage may vary. I don't have a tactile screen protector, and I don't
know if I could accurately use the phone outside the case now or not, not
going to find out either until I upgrade the phone maybe next March. It was
difficult to get it in there, I don't intend to pull it out again, got a
cable so I can connect it to my dock rather than try to pull out the phone
again.

Hi Amy,

I think I would like to try the OtterBox Defender and would love it if you
could send one of the screen overlays for that particular case. I just have
two questions:
1. You said that the case has its own built-in screen protector. I looked
online and they referred to it as a membrane that fits over the screen. I'm
guessing that what that would mean is that, once you put on the SpeedDots
overlay, you would, in effect, have two screen protectors. Does that affect
screen sensitivity?

2. You said that your overlay doesn't peel off the OtterBox because you're
not sliding your phone in and out of a shell. Instead, your phone stays in
the shell all the time. I understand that, but how then does it fit into
the belt clip/holster? I would imagine that the back of the phone would
slide into the holster, with the screen facing out. Is that right?

Thanks so much for answering my questions. I appreciate your time.

Hi Carol,

Well I use a Mac for nearly everything. THe only time I use WIndows is on a
VM at work and mainly because I need to ensure 100% compatibility for
Microsoft Word. If Microsoft would get its thumb out and make the Office
suite accessible I might not need Windows at all.
However, with that said I consider myself to be very efficient using the
Mac, but then I also have a good number of years experience. Therefore, if
you are willing to accept that there will be a learning curve and you are
prepared to put the time in, then you will do just fine. Remember the effort
it took to master the world of iOS. :) THe best thing is you can always have
both with the Mac. You can run the Mac and WIndows for things that you
really cannot live without. Hey you can even run Linux on that VM if yo
like. :)

it's because you have to hide your keypad in order to see the prompt

using IPhone apps for self-employment

2012-06-22 Thread Marianne Denning
I am going into business for myself and have an IPhone 4s. I am a
certified teacher of students who are visually impaired so will be
working, primarily, with school age students. I am totally blind.
Does anyone see a need to purchase an IPad 3? What accessible apps
could be helpful? You can answer me at maria...@denningweb.com.
Thanks in advance.

Re: VO can be heard only through my ear phones

2012-06-22 Thread Richard Turner
OK, just to be really methodical about this.
Go into settings and make sure the volume is set to change with the buttons.
Do this with your earphones plugged in, so once the volume is set to change
with the buttons, try the two finger flick up, then unplug the headphones and
keep tapping on the volume up button on the side of the phone.
If that doesn't fix it, then it is time to deal with Apple.
So, you are saying the speakers work fine for everything other than VoiceOver,
right?

Re: making a phone call working with an automated system

2012-06-22 Thread Christina
Thanks so much. I am doing something wrong though. I am not getting a prompt
to double tap or anything. In my contacts, I entered the complete number
followed by a comma, then a one, then a semicolon, then my string of numbers.
I did not insert any spaces. When I try to make the phone call, the call is
connected, there is a pause, then the iPhone dials one and then I get nothing
after that. I tried a one finger double tap in the middle of the screen but
nothing seems to happen.

Thanks for any further tips, I appreciate it.

If so, do a two finger flick up so VO starts reading the entire screen and

Once you get VO back to where you can hear it, set that setting to off, so

With your earphones unplugged, do a two fingered double tap to get music
playing. Voice Over is tied into the media volume, and I have had this
exact same thing happen. Then keep pressing the volume up key until the
volume is back to where it needs to be.

vanishing iPhone ap?

2012-06-22 Thread Phil Halton
do a search for the app from your search screen (left of the first home
screen). That'll tell you if its actually on the iPhone, If you've got the name
right that is. This happened to me once and it turned out that the app wound
up in a subfolder somehow and was the reason I couldn't find it on any of my
screens.

VO can be heard only through my ear phones

2012-06-22 Thread Phil Halton
This has happened to me several times since owning iPhones (3GS, and now a 4).
The problem has always been lint, or some other obstruction in the microswitch
of the earphone jack. When you insert the earplugs into the jack, it closes, or
opens, (I can't remember which) a small switch that diverts output from the
speaker to the earphones. When some dirt or lint gets into that jack, it can do
the same thing and divert the output from the speaker to the phones. If you
have a sighted friend, they can look down into the jack (its lit with a blue
LED at the bottom of the hole) and see if there's anything in there.

I've actually sucked out the lint with a good blast of air, either from my
mouth or a can of compressed air and solved the problem that way. It may take
some doing, but I'll bet this is your problem, and a can of compressed air is a
good thing to have handy. Or, try sucking really hard on the jack (I'm not
kidding). It may dislodge any junk that's in there keeping the microswitch open.

good luck.

All,

A cautionary note, this resolves the immediate problem, the expired

If they are the same numbers every time (like an extension), you can
place commas or semicolons in the contact. The commas will pause for a
few seconds then dial the next set of numbers.

RE: CarTunes free for limited time.

2012-06-22 Thread Debbie Downey
HI Wil,

Thank you! That did the trick. I'm still not sure whether this app makes it
any easier to play my music since I really didn't have any trouble using the
native music app on the phone and I'm wondering if in fact it makes it more
difficult with having to always turn voiceover off and back on. It was free
though so that is the time to try these things out without incurring any
additional cost.

Hi Debbie,

I believe you will have to jump start this app by playing something from
your collection on your phone. Once you do this, a two finger swipe up with
VoiceOver turned off should bring up your music on the phone. You will have
to turn VO back on to see if CarTunes shows your music.

Hope this helps.

You can also do a two finger swipe up to get at your music, so you won't
have to touch the music app. Do a two finger swipe down to bring up a tweet
to tell the universe what you're listening to.

Thanks for the tip. This app is pretty cool.

First thing I noticed is to get past the intro screen I needed to go to the
app switcher and remove car tunes and then restart it. It works fine after
that.

The easiest way to use this app is to select the music playlist you want to
listen to in the Apple music app, then close that app and open Car Tunes.
Turn off voice over and this app works great. Tap the screen to toggle play
and pause. swipe left to go to the next track, swipe right to go to the
previous track, etc.

If you do not want to turn voice over off, use the pass through to do the
same controls. For Example, double tap and hold until you hear the pass
through sound, lift your finger and it will start to play, repeat this and
it will stop. Double tap and hold until you hear the pass through sound and
swipe left to go to the next track, etc. This is much slower than turning
off voice over, but some are not comfortable with out that friendly voice.

This app will be especially handy when I am using my Samsung headset with
the stereo ear buds as it does not have music controls.
Thanks again, Mike,
Chuck

I had this problem a few months back. I contacted Apple support and it

Hi,
I agree about the better technology part, but for all we know the next
iPhone could very well be the same subsidized prices as the 4S is now.
As far as cases, I highly recommend the Boxwave Keyboard Buddy. They have
several versions, one includes a backlit keyboard that's more expensive,
and

the one without the backlight was $39.00 last time I checked.

Hi folks,
My contract with AT&T is officially over and have set my mind to get an
iPhone 4S (although Android has good programming potential, at this time,
accessibility was superior on the iPhone after using an iTouch). Since I
do

a lot of typing, I'd like to get your opinions on useful keyboard case for
iPhone (most of them are slide-out variety). I'd like something that's
quite

durable, works with iPhone 4S and possibly on other systems and has good
layout (preferably that of typical smartphones) with under $100 price tag
(around 30 to 60 dollars). Also, if you are using a keyboard case, could
you

post the layout of the keyboard case and the keyboard itself?
Thanks and looking forward to your opinions.
Cheers,
Joseph

2012-06-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, there's no guarantee that there will be a new iPhone in a few
months or that it will be named iPhone 5, although what's in a name.
I've also heard that it may be slightly larger than the 4S with a larger
battery as well. I'm sure the technology will be better, but I'm not
sure I want an iPhone that's any larger or heavier than the 4S.

Hi,
If memory serves, screens can hold up to 16 items; folders can fit up to 12.

Hth, hiW!

Might also be that you got too many apps to fit in the available slots;
so

can only be found with a search. Shovel more into folders to clear space?
You can increase density quite a lot with that.

Re: Recommendations wanted for keyboard case for iPhone 4S

2012-06-22 Thread Eric SS
I second the recommendation for the box wave keyboard buddy. It is basically a
slider with two rails that snap on Yeeither side of your iPhone and the
keyboard slides out from under the iPhone it does basically double the
thickness of the iPhone but it really doesn't add that much weight. There is a
cut out for the camera lens and all ports and buttons. It charges by mini USB
and holds a charge for very long time. Does have an off switch. As I recall
there were debits on F and J and I can't really remember the rest of the
keyboard configuration but it was a very nice design device

It can be a bit of a challenge to take it off the phone because it clamps on
pretty tight. But it is doable and gets easier with each time. You may want to
remove it in times when you know youwill not need a keyboard and do not want
the added bulk. The alternative too that is a portable keyboard that you will
have to remember to stow somewhere in case you need it.

Re: vanishing iPhone ap?

2012-06-22 Thread goshawk on horseback
I would if I could get that to work, but when I have tried to do that, all I
have managed to do is move apps on to a different page, which now means that
I have lost others. it is very frustrating, as I have no idea how I am going
to find those now.
some clear instructions, or even better someone who can actually talk me
through it, so that it doesn't keep changing pages would really be
appreciated, as at the moment, the more I am trying to sort this, the more I
am messing things up!

Actually no. If you have 11 pages of apps and all 11 pages are full. No
new app will be available on page 12 because there is no page 12. The
only way you can reach additional apps is by finding them in the
spotlight search. So, looks like it's time to fit apps into folders, or
get less apps. 11 pages times 16 apps per page means 176 apps, assuming
0 folders. However if they are all folders, then in theory you can have
192 apps per page if there are 16 folders all with 12 apps each. Then
multiply 192 times 11 and you get 2012.

Hope this helps.

Oh!Ok, you double tap and hold and when it says moving, slide finger
about until it's on top of another app, one you'd like to hide with the one
you're moving; then lift finger and it'll make the noise and ask you for a
folder name, though it puts one in by default and you have to change it.
But once done, you can go back to the main screen, dt&H to move something
else and drop it on top of the new folder and it goes in there. I think
there's a limit of 4/folder; but it is a good start.

Hth, hiW!

Re: vanishing iPhone ap?

2012-06-22 Thread Raul A. Gallegos

Re: vanishing iPhone ap?

2012-06-22 Thread goshawk on horseback
have checked all through all 11 pages, and couldn't find it on any of them.
I think I found it when I did the search, but would still like to know why it
won't show like all the other apps. also, I hope this isn't going to keep
happening, as I have other apps I want to install, and don't really want to
have to remember what they are all called, and having to keep searching for
them all the time.
