Re: SpeedDots Otter Box Defender Question
I have Otterbox defender cases on my 3GS, does the speedDots cover go on the outside? seems a stupid question, but the ones I got sent from a UK supplier didn't say, and for sure it was not good direct on the phone screen and under that of the otterbox case. Ditto my iPad1, also Otterboxed, so are there suitable and effective dot protectors for those? I got a baby 49key kb, need to look for UK available battery pack ideas next. I have the full Speeddots screen protector. I bought a screen protector originally when I got the phone. My Speeddots fit right over top and over the whole original screen protector. Next new piece of equipment is a extra battery of some sort and maybe a keyboard. However, Speeddots helps quite a bit. Still want Fleksy, though. Re: SpeedDots Otter Box Defender Question
Ok, you answered my question, and I had to read your phrases 3 times to spot the distinction, it is still a bit early on a slow sunday morning to be up to speed yet. For folks advanced on to more modern iPhones, who might therefore have a spare or redundent 3GS SpeedDots for said Otterbox, would you let me know and consider posting it abroad? I could post a wad of classic British radio on CD by return if you like. R! - Original Message - From: Raul A. iCloud Sync and Dropbox
I keep my two computers synchronized with Dropbox. Before I open Outlook or other synchronized files on either computer, I make sure Dropbox has finished updating files. If I begin using iCloud to sync my iPhone with the files in my Dropbox folder while also using Dropbox to sync my two computers, am I going to run into a conflict? I'd prefer not to receive responses from folks who are just guessing. My own guess is that I will run into trouble. I'd like to hear from anyone who had actually done what I'm going to do. Hi, But iCloud would be syncing things like e-mail, contacts, and calendar info. I honestly don't see how that would disrupt the syncing of files in dropbox. Truth be told, every time you turn on your device, multiple services are probably syncing in the background without you even noticing. Some time back I downloaded a game for the IPhone called adaptive trivia. I really like the game a lot and would like to unlock it so I can get the whole version. It says you can unlock it within the app. Does anyone know anything about this game or how I might go about unlocking it? Thanks so much. Re: advantages and disadvantages of jailbreaking
Hello. You might want to read over some of the recent jailbreak messages in the last couple of weeks because there was a thread where people posted a lot of why they like to jailbreak their phone. The messages can be found from the list archives, and the list archive Web address is found at the end of each message posted here. However to answer your question, one of the reasons I like to jailbreak is because I get access to a lot more tweaks and features to the iPhone that Apple normally doesn't allow you to do. For example, with a jailbroken iPhone I can integrate my Google voice number a lot more closely with the iPhone. I do not have to use a separate app to make phone calls. Another advantage is that I can use a schedule profile program so that my phone will automatically go into silent mode at a specified time. I can make it turn on or off Wi-Fi and or Bluetooth at specified times. I can change the theme of my phone to make it look like or sound like a Star Trek computer or a windows XP computer. I can make the music automatically stop playing when I disconnect the headphones and automatically resume playing when I connect the headphones. I can skip unlimited amount of times in the Pandora music player. And lastly, one of the most recent important ones, I can add and remove music from the iPhone without ever having to use iTunes. I can simply copy the music over as if my iPhone was a USB stick. -- Raul A. Re: SpeedDots Otter Box Defender Question
Hello. You put on the OtterBox case like normal. The OtterBox case has its own screen protector. The next thing you do is put on the speed dots screen protector case over it. In order for it to fit, it will need to be cut so that the top and bottom portions of the protector itself are no longer there. I hope this makes sense. -- Raul A. Turning mp3 files into an audio book
Hello Listers, I have a set of mp3 files of an audio book. What are some recommendations for the best way to read this on the iphone? Is there a program for concatinating them into a single file? Should i create a m4b file so i can keep my place in the book? What are alternatives to itunes for listening to it? I have used downcast to import podcast mp3 files before, but it seems to mix the order of imported files. Any suggestions and experiences would be appreciated. Thanks. What I like about the new version is that if you have it set to driving mode, and you set up a route that is fairly short, it will pop up and say, that is a very short route, would you rather walk? So far it seems like a nice little app but I still have a lot to check out, for example, how to find specific genres or search for a particular artist or group. I do like not having to hear audio ads; that's a big plus. One little quirk that I've noticed is that when I flick through the lists of tabs at the bottom of the screen, I'll hear something like: Concierge, concierge whatever, Playlists, playlists whatever and so on. What's up with that? For anyone wanting to check it out, know that Songza, like many apps that I've encountered recently, wants to integrate with Facebook and it would appear that you can sign in using your Facebook account if you want to. I opted not to do that just in case I decide to ditch Facebook at some point. All in all, not a bad little app and you can't beat the price. Changing configuration options for cydia apps and documentation
Hello all. Sorta curious if anyone with jailbreak experience knows anything about how services are started and stopped on IOS. Also, if you wish to change configuration options for an application, open ssh for example, what needs to be done to make the change take affect. As some of you may already know, there are files that you can change to tell the server what addresses and ports to listen on, etc. The reason I'm asking is because the last time I tried to make changes to ssh, even after a respring the changes would always go back to default. Reading on google seems to say that back in the day, you could use either init scripts or rc.d to do this but I had no luck finding either. I'm not really asking for exactly how to do it, just a place to find more up to date information on this sorta thing. Thank you. Take care. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. To search the VIPhone public archive, visit http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone@googlegroups.com/. RE: home key not working
I think I might be inclined to try doing a reset by holding both the power switch and the home switch down for ten seconds to see if the device is just confused unless you can feel that it is a physical thing with the button itself in which case, you probably have no choice but to have it repaired. I have found, over the years that sometimes, these electronic devices scramble their own brains requiring either a reset of some type or with some things, removal of the battery with reinsertion. Obviously, we can't do that with the iPhone, but we can try the reset. Re: Songza
Hi, Sorry, I have no idea. I don't go through the iTunes store to buy apps; I use the app store directly on my phone and, frankly, I've never looked at info in the app store to check out availability in other countries. Your best bet is to launch the app store on your phone and do a search for songza, spelled s o n g z a. Hope this helps. Re: Weather alerts on your phone
Scott: As someone who makes his living in local radio. We certainly appreciate that you still rely on local radio. That is exactly what local radio should be about. However, I feel that sadly local radio has lost some of its focus where that is concerned. Oh well, a topic for another day, another list. If you're interested in Weather Alert USA, it can be found in the App store if you search it out. The App does cost 9.99. However, it is totally accessible with voiceover can serve all or most of your weather needs. RE: SpeedDots Otter Box Defender Question
Thanks so much. I am going to look at that site again. The case I have is one I purchased with the phone and covers the back and edges of the phone, but not the front. I bought an OtterBox case into which I can slide the phone, but it is a royal pain you know where when you need to get at your phone in a hurry. The other thing which bothers me is that when the face of the phone gets dirty, I don't like the feel of it and I am always cleaning it on my pants or something to get rid of the offending gunk. I know. I am kind of funny about such things, but that's how it is. RE: home key not working
Hi, No. To give you some comparisons on resets between the iPhone and other devices (mostly BN); Turning the iphone off is like putting the BN Apex into deep sleep mode. To wake the device, you'd press the power button for about two seconds. In contrast, doing a hard reset (pressing power and home for about ten seconds) is equivalent to forced restart - five second reset on the Apex. Hope this clears things a bit. I got the ones with the mic, and I never heard static with them. I haven't used them a lot on phone calls, but they work good, considering they don't block your ears. Re: Changing configuration options for cydia apps and documentation
Thanks man, I appreciate it. Like I said, I attempted to find pages with documentation about the configuration files in the /etc area of the filesystem but what I did find was seriously out of date. Reading on google seems to say that back in the day, you could use either init scripts or rc.d to do this but I had no luck finding either. I'm not really asking for exactly how to do it, just a place to find more up to date information on this sorta thing. Thank you. Mophie juice pack products
Hi all, I was looking to buy one of Mophie's cheaper juice pack products for use while I'm camping. I came across a couple of juice pack reserve models and was wondering how to tell what kind of a charge they would give my iPhone 4. Could anyone with one of these or other mophie products chime in and say how much of a boost they can give? I don't want to buy something if it'll only give me like an extra 10-20% charge. Hi Mark, Look at the power specs for the model phone you have, then at the capacity of the pack you are interested in. That should give you a ratio to work with. RE: Prizmo
I don't know if this helps or not, but I started out way way back with the Kurzweil Personal Reader after having used the optacon for many years. I now have the KNFB Mobile, the phone of which I have retired, keeping the reader in full use for now. Eventually, I will look for one of these for the iPhone. However, not everyone is going to be happy with the same products. This will be a little like Kurzweil versus Open Book or something else. The main thing is that you use what give you the quality you wish and ease of use. Some of my friends who have never had vision ever seem to have a bit more trouble with the camera concepts than some of us who have had partial vision for a time, though with practice, you can master this. With my readers, I like to be able to move through the text by character, word, line, and sentence as well as get an overall read of the document with reasonable clarity. I am thinking that with the prices of these apps, one may have more of an opportunity to try a couple of these to find what works best for you. As I say, I will explore this as I gain more experience with the iPhone itself. Perhaps, one day, someone like Dr. Kurzweil or others will develop something for iPhone, though I understand the development of products of this nature for iPhone is an expensive undertaking. I tend to believe that the apps now available will only get better with time and that being able to purchase a product right off the shelf for immediate use at the same price as everyone else is quite something to be pleased with. RE: Aftershokz Headphones with mic
Exactly that, the aftershox are *bone conduction* headphones, they sit just in front of your ears. They're good, as far as they go, and they supposedly have a lifetime warranty, which I'm going to have to test. I purchased a set of these, used them for an hour one day, and loved them. I put them back in a drawer, and pulled them out later, and I can only use them for a few seconds, before they turn off.I bought mine off ebay, but I'm trying to find the warranty information. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Jessica Brown Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2012 5:55 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Aftershokz Headphones with mic Interesting, what do you mean they don't block your ears? - Original Message - From: Brent Harding br...@hostany.net To: viphone@googlegroups.com Date sent: Sun, 8 Jul 2012 16:37:20 -0500 Subject: Re: Aftershokz Headphones with mic I got the ones with the mic, and I never heard static with them. Re: I have a few questions
Can you double tap the screen with two fingers to start a call? Is there a certain point on the screen where you should tap? Jen From: Joseph Lee Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2012 7:59 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: I have a few questions Hi, At least for first question, you can make a call in at least three ways: · Use keypad: dial the phone number using the phone keypad (from phone app, tap the keypad button to bring it). After entering the phone number, press the call button (bottom center between “add to contacts” and “delete” keys). · From contacts list: Tap the contact you wish to call, then tap the phone number, and it should start dialing. · Using Siri: Bring Siri (hold down the home key) and say, “call num” where “num” is the phone number. Speak clearly. Or, if the phone number is in the address book, say, “call someone” where “someone” is the name of the contact. Once you start a call using any of these methods, double tap the screen with two fingers to end a call. Note that Siri works only on iPhone 4S. A similar method exists for iPhone 3GS and 4. Re: What Leo Laporte Had To Say About Fedora Outlier LLC And Social Media
Hi, Personally, and this is just my opinion, but I think the way forward for this venture would be to contact all of the major blind organizations around the world that speak english and try to establish some form of system where they would recommend you to new iDevice users. Obviously posting on places like viphone doesn't hurt at all, but even at the price of $6 for 20 minutes, you're competing against 1000 plus people who are willing to give out help for free, which seems like much more of a compelling option if people are short on funds for example. Develop a social media presence for sure, but try to catch new users before they discover resources like viphone and applevis. It's been a few years since I've visited, but I remember the Zone BBS www.zonebbs.com used to sell add space for $10 a month which might be a good place to start. I wish you luck, although this is the last I will say on list. Cheers, Ben. On 7/9/12, Scott Rumery blindfait...@gmail.com wrote: Wow! This guy is really good, you should give this guy a raise. Hey Shawn Paul, I actually did search for Weather ALert USA and have not been able to find it in the App store. DO you know if the name was change perhaps? I tried a few variations, but no luck. Obviously posting on places like viphone doesn't hurt at all, but even at the price of $6 for 20 minutes, you're competing against 1000 plus people who are willing to give out help for free, which seems like much more of a compelling option if people are short on funds for example. Re: Aftershokz question.
How does something like this compare with using regular earbuds with Awareness? Sometimes, the music takes on an echo, if the mic is on. Do the aftershoks do this? How does the system effect music? is it flatter? On Jul 8, 2012, at 7:37 PM, Gail the U. S. RE: Aftershokz Headphones with mic
Ok, let me describe what I have. In the box, were the headphones, a nice bag to put them in, and upon further looking, there is a USB dongle looking thing, with one miniplug, which I thought was an adapter, that you could put into your computer, kind of like those mic/headphone adapters you can use with your computer. Is that how you recharge the battery? And, how long does it take to fully charge them? If that's what they are, I feel really stupid! LOL! Oh well, it won't be the first time. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2012 7:41 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Aftershokz Headphones with mic I can do that, but it will be aweek. I'm on the road and chose to take a different set of headphones with. It was a toss-up, as I like the Aftershokz, but I like the noise-canceling older ones I have used for a few years, too. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Gail the U. I tried it too, reminds me of those devices people sometimes put in chairs so if they play drums or something, they feel it in their seat. I never used one of those, but it feels like the drums have a hitting sensation in that lace these rest on. - Original Message - From: Gail the U. S.
