No, unlocking does not impose any restrictions on your use of the phone. It removes a block, that's all--a block on using the carrier of your choice with the phone. Otherwise, it works exactly the same. Grant On 9/10/12, Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. kramlinger.ke...@mayo.edu wrote: Is it true unlocking results in only phone and texting access, but not data? Re: ATT Unlock
Official unlocking doesn't void your warranty or your Apple Care plan, and it poses no risks. There is absolutely no disadvantage to having your phone unlocked. Unlocking let's you activate on any carrier of your choice; that's all it does. Re: Wifi issues continue
believe it is hardware problem with 4S. Have Ipod with same OS, Ipad, several computers on Windows. My brother has now just started having same problem with 4S, different carrier too. It will get so bad that you can't see any WIFI networds anywhere. All other devices never lose the WIFI. I thought it was my imagination at first, but finally it deteriorated to the point where it would not see any WIFI. This occurred over a several week period of time. Re: Wifi issues continue
Yep, tried everything including wiping phone clean. It would work when I first turned it on but as soon as phone went to sleep, lost WIFI when I went to use it. Apple store did same thing with same result which is why I hung around the store for about 10 minutes after they put the phone through diagnostics. They saw it happen and gave me another phone. I've read a few articles about one of the chips being defective in a lot of the 4S phones and it causes this WIFI thing to happen. Only cure appears to be a different phone. And hope it doesn't happen on this one. I got the 2 year maintenance to get me through until I can go for a new phone with my carrier which will be just in time. Re: ATT Unlock
Hi, People unlock their phones so that they can be used on other GSM carriers. In the US, these carriers are ATT and T-Mobile. Or, for example, if you travel overseas with an unlocked phone to a foreign country such as the United Kingdom, you can swap the ATT SIM card for a Vodafone SIM card or something else so that you don't incur expensive roaming rates while traveling. Unlocking your iPhone does not void your AppleCare warranty. To install apps not available in the iTunes store, you must jail break your device. Thanks. Re: Uploading photos to Facebook using the iPhone
Hi, there are 2 ways for typical users. First you can use the Facebook app, but as of recently I haven't found it to be as friendly with Voice Over as it used to be. The way I usually do it is by emailing the photo to my private facebook mobile address. If you go to m.facebook.com and go to photos from there, you will see the specific address tied to your fb account which you can use. Just add that email address to your contacts. Now from the camera roll, choose the photo you want to send, and email it to that fb address. Put the caption you want, meaning the description of the photo, in the subject line and send it off. I usually go with the medium quality since facebook will lower it anyway to save on space. Remember that the facebook address you are given is unique and tied to your account, so it's a good idea not to publish it for others to use. It can be something like, lanrover2...@m.facebook.com or something else random. I hope this helps. -- Raul A. RE: Google Groups.
Hi Kawal, I can't speak for the Mac experience, but I use Windows 7 which means IE 9 as a web browser and Jaws 13 and labeling the new google groups site inaccessible is in my opinion a pretty strong statement. I find the site very useable and apart from a few Peculiarities it is fully accessible. I can easily work around the non-standard stuff by using the Jaws cursor, tab key, quick navigation keys like b to find buttons etc. Unfortunately I have to go to work now and can't go into the details and also don't know what exactly the issues are you have, but it is in any case not really necessary to use the Viphone google groups website a lot. The only time I ever go to the google groups site is if I want to change something like how I want to read the list messages, e.g. as a digest, individual mails etc. One thing that might help you is Raul's email regarding Viphone commands you can use without using google groups. RE: [Maccessibility] Google Releases Official YouTube App
Let's hope many people from the list will write to Google and ask them to make the app fully Voiceover accessible. It's too bad Apple doesn't take it's fantastic commitment for accessibility a step further and make Voiceover accessibility a condition for approving especially such commonly used apps. If Google can't even design an app with accessibility in mind I am not very hopeful about the accessibility of Android. Of course even though Apple has done wonderful things the iCloud website is still largely inaccessible and at best can be used with great difficulties and in a limited way. iCloud Back-up
Hello everybody: I thought I would write this note because a number of people in the various iPhone support lists, including this one, have had problems with having back-ups of their phones to iCloud completing. I had the same issue on my old 32 GB 3Gs phone. I had purchased all of the additional space that was required and despite following the instructions for backing up the phone, I continued to have the backup process abort. I had turned of blue tooth as others suggested without any luck and followed all of the recommendations Apple had placed on its support page. The problem finally resolved itself when I backed up my phone using airplane mode with the wireless connection activated. One accessibility issue I have encountered during this exercise was that it was impossible to check the status of the backup without unlocking the phone which, I believe, would cause some of my earlier backup attempts to crash. Perhaps Apple could consider showing backup status as it does with song titles as a person is unlocking their phone? THanks for listening. I agree we should push for accessibility with this app, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions that the fact that this one app has some accessibility issues on a competitors platform has any indication at all on the accessibility of Android--Google's own platform. I would assume Google's priority would be to make it's own platform accessible and make sure their own apps work and are accessible on their own platform first. InDaisy is only in the US App store: I have got enough!
Hi all. I am so frustrated! InDaisy has always been in the danish app store, and the app has been translated into danish as well. Suddenly, just noticed today, it has disappeared from the danish app store. When I search it says no results, and when I search on Google and click the iTunes link, it trys to connect says this app is only in the US app store! I have bought this on an apple ID on an iPad at my job, and I wanna buy this app for myself and use it for a precentation on my iPhone tomorrow. This app has been very pobular here in DK, but what should I tell people now? Well, screw it. THis app is not available anymore. Mainly for that reason, I have got enough of Apple and these restrictions of non-US app stores. I am going to create an US Apple ID so I can purchase all apps in a legal way. I would not do this if InDaisy never has been available here in DK. I never saw that coming and I really need that app hurry. If I had time, I would ask the developers why the app has disappeared, but they can't just make the app available in all countries, and then take it away again! Comments and thoughts on this are very much welcome, if this is allowed to discuss here on this list. I don't see the issue when I am paying for apps from a US account. Re: InDaisy is only in the US App store: I have got enough!
This might sounds like an overkill, but I've just send a mail to Apple accessibility. People are using Apple devices for studying, so it's just so bad that important apps like this suddenly disappears. If Apple is trying to stop people using the Apple devices for studying, this is not the way to go. People are getting some books for school in Daisy format, so this is really not good! Re: [Maccessibility] Google Releases Official YouTube App
Hmm. From what I've been reading on AppleVis, it is accessible, but not in the conventional method. Which begs the question of what defines accessibility? is something not accessible if you cannot accessit using the standard functions of your screen reader? As I understand it, the Sign in process can work without disabling VoiceOver. Essentially, the app is divided in to columns, and the standard flicking left and right gesture does not work. However, if you touch the screen in the appropriate place, VoiceOver is able to give the info to you. But to get to the other column on the screen, you have to tap something on the right side of it, and then tap the left side to get back to that series of columns. I'll have to play around with this when I get the time, but as I understand it, this is how it can be done. What is Airplane mode? Is it data / cellular is turned off? I thought it was data and WiFi, but must not be, from the statement below. Thanks. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Robert Fenton Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 10:17 AM To: Viphone Subject: iCloud Back-up Hello everybody: I thought I would write this note because a number of people in the various iPhone support lists, including this one, have had problems with having back-ups of their phones to iCloud completing. Re: ATT Unlock
I've never had an unlocked phone, but this doesn't sound right. The whole idea of an unlocked phone is that it can be used on multiple carriers. Furthermore, assuming you have data on your plan, I don't see why you couldn't pop your SIM card into your unlocked iPhone and use everything your plan allows, voice, texting and data. Re: app for listening to nfl games (radio feed)
Yes, if you are talking about the Pro Football Radio and Live Scores app, I listened to part of the Bears and Colts game last Sunday. All NFL teams are broadcasted. Most of the teams have several stations to choose from when you want to listen. You may have to try several times before you find the game. Sunday night I tried to listen to the Broncos and Steelers game, but each Denver station I tried, nothing came up. I finally was able to get the game on a Steeler station. I still listened though, and enjoyed the part of the game I heard. Regards, Wayne On 9/11/12, jack lrmccre...@earthlink.net wrote: Has anyone heard the Bears on this app? Re: Wifi issues continue
I have an iPhone 4, and also have issues with my wifi dropping, so it's not just a 4S issue. It doesn't matter which display I have connected, whether it be an Apex, Refreshabraille, or Focus, the issue persists and on a wide veriety of wifi connections. RE: New Tech Doctor podcast entitled 1Password and VoiceOver
Hello Robert, I love your podcasts, and got about 1/3rd way into it before I had to head to work. I'll get back to it. I heard today on one of the broadcast news morning shows about a breach of Apple ID security from a corporate magazine entity in Florida. Apparently a million Aplle U D I D's were breached. Apparently this is abig deal and risks security for many. Do you know anything about this in general, but in particular if this kind of breach would jeopardize the security on 1Password? The journalist covering the story seemed to indicate the only way around it with confidence was to get a new Apple device, presumably one with a different and secure U D I D. You mentioned you had 63 or so passwords within 1Password. I presume you would get them all back with use of a new Apple device, but do you know if this would be true? Thanks. Re: Difficulty with Activating Links in an iBooks Book
Hello, Find the link with your braille display and press one of the router buttons under it to get VO highlighted on it. Perform the double-tap and hold gesture on the display. Double-tap and hold activates the pass through gesture on whatever VO is highlighted on. Pass through gesture cannot currently be performed on the braille display. Re: ABout writing Spanish letters on Iphone
Hi, the best way I have found to do this is by first making sure your typing is set to standard instead of touch. This means that when you tap on a letter, it behaves just like any other button or control on the iPhone. This means that you have to double-tap after first selecting the letter. Once you have it set this way, you can double-tap and hold on the letter you want, the letter A for example, then as you hold on the screen, drag it left or right and you will hear the various accented letters. Just release your finger when you get to the one you want and it will be entered. On a side note, since I don't care for standard typing, I prefer the touch typing, what I tend to do is use DDragon dictation. I can set that to Spanish, and then I can speak whatever I want. Accessible VS Usable -- Was Re: [Maccessibility] Google Releases Official YouTube App
I think this boils down to accessible verses usable. Some feel that if an app doesn't conform 100% to Voice Over standards then it's not accessible. Others feel that if they can use the app with minimal fuss, then it's accessible. Then comes that grey area of defining what is minimal fuss. For example, I would term the downcast app as both accessible and usable. Yet the Netflix app is just usable to me while not being very accessible. This is because I have to do things in a certain way in Netflix app to get what I want and sometimes that's not very convenient. The reason the things have to be done are due to their lack of accessibility features. Now an app like Google Places isn't either accessible or usable to me. This is because it shows unlabeled buttons in many areas and sometimes the labels work and sometimes they do not. This is how it was last year when I tried it out anyway. If things have changed I can revisit the app and see what's up with it. However when all I hear is button button button button for things I want to do, it doesn't sound like it's very usable or accessible to me. Lastly, an app like MotionX GPS Drive is considered accessible, but I don't find it very useful. Whether it's because of my mode of thinking or because I'm used to Navigon I don't know. I just can't get myself to like it. I gave it a fair try during the free trial of the voice guidance and found it to be clunky at best when trying to find a destination or to cancel a route or to do other things which I find easy with Navigon. The only thing it had going for it is that it loaded faster than Navigon. So, there's my usable cents on accessibility. -- Raul A. RE: Accessible VS Usable -- Was Re: [Maccessibility] Google Releases Official YouTube App
I very much like the distinction between accessible and usable. I'm not sure I use the 2 correctly or in conformity with how most people use the terms. I'd like to learn to conform with general usage. Accessible, to me, means that VoiceOver is largely if not completely enabled on an app or in software. There may be varying degrees of accessibility, from none, to low, to moderate to high to complete. Usability, to me, means an app or software may be fully accessible, but usability can be low, due to a non-intuitive layout or tab sequencing or something else. Is my understanding of the terms accessible and usable above accurate in terms of common usage? If not, I'd appreciate clarification. Thanks.
I think you're terms are correct. I also tend to use the terms exactly the way Raul does as well. I think to summarize: accessible: conforms to accessibility standards usable: with familiarity, work arounds and so on, the applications can be used although it's not technically accessible usability: easy to use, due to accessibility, layout, intuitiveness and so on On 11/09/12 19:40, Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. wrote: I very much like the distinction between accessible and usable. Thanks. Then comes that grey area of defining what is minimal fuss. For example, I would term the downcast app as both accessible and usable. Yet the Netflix app is just usable to me while not being very accessible. RE: ATT Unlock
Whoever told you that didn't know what they are talking about. The point is that if you pay the big bucks and buy an unlocked iPhone from Apple directly no carrier can force you into a contract. If you have an iPhone on contract you must take an iPhone plan which means data is mandatory. If you buy it unlocked you can activate it on any plan including prepaid and, if you want, you don't have to take data nor do you have to commit to a contract. When I bought my iPhone 4 back in September of 2010 I switched from a Windows 6.1 Smartphone for which I had no data plan. I decided since I am mostly on WiFi that I didn't need any 3G data and kept it up for all of one month. The point is I was able to just keep the plan I had because Telus, my provider here in Canada, didn't even need to know I had an iPhone. Anyhow, I realized that having an iPhone without data is sort of having a car with an empty gas tank since there are so many convenient things I can do if I have data, but you can do what you want as long as the hardware supports it. RE: InDaisy is only in the US App store: I have got enough!
Soren and others, I looked it up not that long ago, but I think it was also with Google. One thing I had noticed and remarked upon at the time was that both Indaisy and DaisyWorm have not been updated. I think DaisyWorm still showed at version 1.0 and Indaisy I think at 1.1. The Indaisy developer used to post to the list and at $20 it was a pretty expensive app as far as apps go, but I guess maybe there was just no demand for it. I can see how a student might use it although I guess Read2Go can also be used to read Daisy files, I certainly have completely gotten away from reading Daisy Audio Books, I don't have the need to read text books and never will read fiction for pleasure with a computer voice. I believe I still have a contact email for one of the girls who were involved with Indaisy and I'll send her a message and ask what's going on.
