Subject: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S

 Hi all,

Anyone who has ATT without a shared data plan is likely aware they cannot
use Face TIme over the 3G network. Although I do not believe I would use
Face TIme for general conversation, I believe there are cases where it may
be valuable. Obviously there are services such as Skype which apparently
ATT does not block. Now with that said I decided to file a complaint with
the FCC which is the regulatory agency for all things related to
communications such as wireless etc. in the United States. I
decided to file

the complaint because there is no technical reason for ATT to block Face
TIme over the 3G network and especially if they do not block Skype.
My understanding is that Verizon Wireless does not block Face Time and mor
does Sprint. I believe that ATT has taken this position for one of two
reasons and one of which is surely monetary. So, why do I bring this up?
Because I wanted to let anyone who has considered filing a complaint that
ATT will respond. The best part is I have received an initial verbal
response which is exactly what I expected. THe conversation can be best
summed up as to bad. There was absolutely no point in having a
conversation with ATT because despite the fact I pointed out the obvious
fact they do not block Skype or any other VOIP service or placed
any special

restrictions on such services, they have blocked Face Time. I even pointed
out how Face TIme could be useful in some circumstances for an individual
with a visual impairment which incidentally is a true statement. So, I
anticipate that although ATT has taken this position for now they will
continue to face a great deal of pressure from individuals and groups to
 change their position.
The good thing is there are other avenues and options.

RE: Is it just me or has the Canadian Yellow Pages app become, well, inaccessible?

2012-10-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Shawn,

I am in Smithers, BC and also updated not thinking much about it. So I just
had a look and while Voiceover said What search field or something like
that, at first I could not activate edit mode with a double tap, I tried the
pass through and nothing worked. I could not even flick left and right,
moving my finger around would read some stuff like Banks, Restaurants,
Shopping etc.

Anyhow, I also saw something about Location and at some point something did
work and the app asked if I wanted to allow Location Services, I did that
and suddenly the search box worked, I tried to type in Safeway and it
pulled up the information.

But I must say the app is not as easy to use as before and I'll definitely
send an email to the developers and let them know that they should address
accessibility. I think I still have the old version on my computer and I may
downgrade again since I also used the app quite a bit. There are lots of
other apps for finding businesses, but it was nice to have it for people. Of
course you could always put a shortcut to www.Canada411.com on the home
page, that is also a good site and it's what I use on the computer.

By the way, if you have an iPhone 4S and if you upgraded to iOS 6 you can
now ask SIRI Show me electronics stores near me just as an example. SIRI
is now able to do local business searches in Canada.

anyway, when I was trying to use the Canadian Yellow Pages app, I was unable

know why they took away accessibility in this update.

One thing I'm going to write to the author about is that if you've been
reading a whole lot of Statuses and reply to one, you lose your place and
are back at the beginning of the list. Getting back each time is very
time-consuming. I'd like to suggest that when you back out of a report

What do others think of this?

I also love the app, by the way, for its simplicity and straightforward way

What's mail got to do with it? if you got a message, you can get that in
the email, you don't need a special app for that surely. An app that tracks
their pages like usps.com or royalmail.co.uk is plenty good enough. Doubt
any of these do UK tracking though.

There is also one called Slice, which gives information on package
status, when it is shipped, out for delivery, and other things. Slice
works best with web based email accounts, like those with Gmail,
Hotmail, and other services. I think it was free in the App Store. I
don't believe that you have much setup since it tracks the notices you
get in your inbox regarding packages and purchases you have made. I
ahven't used it very much but it sounds handy. I recall reading about
it in one of the lists of iOS app books from National Braille Press.

RE: ZAGG InvisibleShield military grade screen protector -- anyone use this?

2012-10-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

I had a full coverage one on my iPhone 4 (front, back and sides). They are
finicky to put on and I had the best result when I walked up to a Zagg mall
booth and had the girl who worked their put it on, cost an extra $10, but
they do it all the time. You are also not supposed to use the phone much for
a couple of hours and be careful for the first day as they put some sort of
gel on the touch screen which has to dry.

The screen protector is very good and it makes the phone very grippy,
somebody recently said they should rubberize cell phones to make them more
durable, well, this is probably the closest thing to it. One thing though,
it also makes it a bit less easy to slide your finger along the screen as
it's sort of, well, sticky is not exactly the right word, but just not as
smooth and slick as straight glass. The material they use is what they put
on helicopter windscreens when they fly in the desert, it's self-heeling and
very tough. I decided not to put one on my 4S since I have it mostly in my
leather belt case and if not I just use it naked. If you want to use your
phone without any case and you want the best protection possible then I
think these are your best option.

Sieghard

RE: converter cable

2012-10-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Robert,

If you have a 3GS or 4 then not upgrading to the iPhone 5 in my opinion is a
mistake. You may end up buying more accessories with the 30-PIN connector
and it's not like the 2013 iPhone will suddenly go back to it, Apple usually
sticks with something for some time and the new 9-PIN connector is here to
stay for the next few years so you might as well get onboard with it. If you
have an older dock just get the Lightning to 30-PIN adapter and you are all
set.

RE: Search Results in App Store

2012-10-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi David,

Maybe try to clear your app switcher and turn the phone off and then on
again. Sometimes this clears up problems. I just went to the app store and
to Search and started typing Dictionary. I typed the first 6 letters and
after swiping to the right past the clear text button Voiceover said All
results for dictio and below that was a list of a whole bunch of apps with
the word dictionary in it. If all else fails you may have to do a factory
reset, my iOS 6 update went well, but I had a few strange issues afterwards
and eventually decided to spend the time and do a factory reset and then set
up my phone as a new phone and everything is working very well now.

RE: digit eyes

2012-10-03 Thread Sandy Finley
Has anyone used the audio component of Digit-Eyes? I bought some of their
plain labels that can be used for that purpose. I want to record on some of
them and apply them to food items in the kitchen. For instance, we bought
some hot cereals that recommend different ratios of water to cereal when
cooked. I figured I could use Digit-Eyes to record those directions and put
the audio label on the cereal's container. I can then scan the label with
my phone if I forget the directions. It works but I have one question. So
far the only way I know to get to the recording function of Digit-Eyes is to
first allow it to scan the blank label; then it invites me to record. Is
there a way to bypass that tedious scanning and just tell it to record?
Thanks.

Hi Paul.
It's a bit like that, but it actually hunts for the barcode on the item, I'm
not sure exactly how oMoby works. The barcodes for a lot of the k-cups are
located on the tops of the boxes. Here's some info I wrote up awhile back
about digit-eyes for another list I'm on. Perhaps it will help?
Begin quoted message:
Hi all.
Just been playing around with Digit-Eyes today a bit, and here are my
impressions so far.
When you first launch the app, you are put on the Scan button. Before
scanning anything though, I would highly recommend going to the help section
of the app and reading their tips on scanning, as it can save a lot of time
and grief. While locating barcodes and UPC codes on products can be
difficult, once you find them, the rest works quite nice. Again, for
assistance with this, see the help section in the app or on the Digit-Eyes
website. Essentially, you will position the camera over the device and try
to take your best guess as to where the barcode is located. After selecting
the scan button, begin moving the camera from about 8 inches and with each
snap of the camera, raise it another inch. Also, sometimes rotating the
product can help. Note that it doesn't matter what orientation the barcode
is in, the app simply needs to recognize that it has found a barcode to work
properly. When the app has located the barcode, the phone will vibrate,
indicating that you don't need to move the camera around anymore.
Digit-eyes recognized all 5 of the items I put in front of it. Once you have
scanned the object and the barcode is recognized, the phone will speak and
show in braille what the object is. Moving to the right one option will give
you the more info button, assuming there is more info in the database, which
will give you more specific information about the product such as
ingredients', manufacturer, serving size if applicable, calories, a recipe
if appropriate, etc. Moving to the right one more option lands you on the
option to Google the product where you can find even more info, along with
prices from nearby retail markets. The app will jump directly to this button
if there is no further info in the databases about this product. This
function is ladled as web search. Moving to the right one more time gives
you a button where you can report wrong descriptions. I have never gotten
one of these, though my experience with this app is still relatively
limited. I have been told by those who have contacted Digit-Eyes that the
customer service people are very prompt and respond positively to feedback.
Flicking right one more time will land you on the Scan button again.
QR Codes (Quick Response)
While not the original intent of the creation of QR codes, Digit-Eyes allows
you to sign up for a free account on their website, and you can then print
off whatever ladles you want. The most typical way to do this would be with
address labels that you can purchase at any store that carries mailing
products. The challenge with this is cutting the codes out correctly, and if
you do not have enough site to do this, sighted assistance may be required.
You can also have Digit-Eyes mail you the QR codes already cut up and ready
to go, but this costs more money. Please see their site for details on
pricing. The QR code allows you to enter a short text description of the
item of up to 100 characters. Once the QR code is affixed to whatever you
want to be labeled, you can then scan for the code and it will read back the
result and also display it in braille. You can even purchase special labels
from Digit-Eyes which are washable, meaning that you can attach them to
clothing and store whatever info you want on the tags. They must be sewn in
to the clothing. The website indicates that these are good for 50 washes,
but I have no info as to how long they last. The website also says that most

Re: MLB AtBat update

2012-10-03 Thread Sean Paul
Yes, I've called them also early on regarding the issue. They're supposed to
have some sort of update out before the play off's begin Friday afternoon is my
understanding. Your suggestion about getting in to the app switcher before
getting back to the home screen worked for me like the champ the Braves will be
last evening as well. Thanks for it.

So anyway, I was finally able to call MLB about the audio cutting out and was
informed that this issue with the feed dropping when exiting the app with one
press of the home button is a known bug and that they're working on it and they
expect to release an update soon. Who knows when that'll be, but at least they
acknowledge the problem.

Subject: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S

 Hi all,

Anyone who has ATT without a shared data plan is likely aware they
cannot
use Face TIme over the 3G network. Although I do not believe I
would use
Face TIme for general conversation, I believe there are cases where
it may
be valuable. Obviously there are services such as Skype which
apparently
ATT does not block. Now with that said I decided to file a
complaint with
the FCC which is the regulatory agency for all things related to
communications such as wireless etc. in the United States. I
decided to file
the complaint because there is no technical reason for ATT to
block Face
TIme over the 3G network and especially if they do not block Skype.
My understanding is that Verizon Wireless does not block Face Time
and mor
does Sprint. I believe that ATT has taken this position for one of
two
reasons and one of which is surely monetary. So, why do I bring
this up?
Because I wanted to let anyone who has considered filing a
complaint that
ATT will respond. The best part is I have received an initial verbal
response which is exactly what I expected. THe conversation can be
best
summed up as to bad. There was absolutely no point in having a
conversation with ATT because despite the fact I pointed out the
obvious
fact they do not block Skype or any other VOIP service or placed
any special
restrictions on such services, they have blocked Face Time. I even
pointed
out how Face TIme could be useful in some circumstances for an
individual
with a visual impairment which incidentally is a true statement.
So, I
anticipate that although ATT has taken this position for now they
will
continue to face a great deal of pressure from individuals and
groups to
 change their position.
The good thing is there are other avenues and options.

pass through and nothing worked.

Only possible downside is that all of your networks are shown in one
feed. They may have addressed this in a recent update, but last time I
used it, my numerous Twitter friends and all my FB friends were in the
same list, with no real indication from which service the post was
for. I would give each service it's own feed, especially if you are
friends with many people on both services, you could split it up a
little. I understand for convenience it is good, but if you have
people on a social network that post a lot, or if you follow between
50-100 or more people on Twitter, it can be confusing at times.

although we're not sure just how bad yet, and she was asking to
see me on the phone, as we had done that a few months ago when at

Hi Robert,

If you have a 3GS or 4 then not upgrading to the iPhone 5 in my opinion is
a

mistake. You may end up buying more accessories with the 30-PIN connector
and it's not like the 2013 iPhone will suddenly go back to it, Apple
usually

sticks with something for some time and the new 9-PIN connector is here to

 Hello,

The app is called Read2Go, and it works very well. You can

 You can read them
with Voiceover or a cappella voices built into the app. I
 use a braille

Not only is this somewhat of an issue for the blind and an issue for
mainstream people, it's an issue for the deaf community as well who
can use FaceTime to communicate via visual sign language. I was
considering switching providers when my contract was up, but this
settles it... I'll stick with VZW.

  Hi all,

Anyone who has ATT without a shared data plan is likely aware
 they
  cannot
use Face TIme over the 3G network. Although I do not believe I
  would use
Face TIme for general conversation, I believe there are cases
 where
  it may
be valuable. Obviously there are services such as Skype which
  apparently
ATT does not block. Now with that said I decided to file a
  complaint with
the FCC which is the regulatory agency for all things related to
communications such as wireless etc. in the United States. I
  decided to file
the complaint because there is no technical reason for ATT to
  block Face
TIme over the 3G network and especially if they do not block
 Skype.
My understanding is that Verizon Wireless does not block Face
 Time
  and mor
does Sprint. I believe that ATT has taken this position for
 one of
  two
reasons and one of which is surely monetary. So, why do I bring
  this up?
Because I wanted to let anyone who has considered filing a
  complaint that
ATT will respond. The best part is I have received an initial
 verbal
response which is exactly what I expected. THe conversation can
 be
  best
summed up as to bad. There was absolutely no point in having a
conversation with ATT because despite the fact I pointed out
 the
  obvious
fact they do not block Skype or any other VOIP service or placed
  any special
restrictions on such services, they have blocked Face Time. I
 even
  pointed
out how Face TIme could be useful in some circumstances for an
  individual
with a visual impairment which incidentally is a true
 statement.
  So, I
anticipate that although ATT has taken this position for now
 they
  will
continue to face a great deal of pressure from individuals and
  groups to
  change their position.
The good thing is there are other avenues and options.

Yes, you can import audio files into Downcast from your computer, the music

Unable to access netflix using Apple TV

2012-10-03 Thread Debbie Downey
Hi all,

Recently I am having trouble getting Netflix to work on our Apple TV. This
is the latest generation of the Apple TV running the latest firmware
installed only a few days ago. So far as we can tell everything else on
Apple TV is working at least for what we use. Quite some time ago someone
posted what might be a solution for this problem. I believe it involved
changing the DNS setting from within the Apple TV. If someone has this info
could you please post it?

Thanks!

What I do is to write my status and then, just above the keyboard on the
screen are buttons, friends, places, and a few others I can't remember since
they've changed them. You tap the friends button and select the friends.
It will show them with you but also tags them.

Thanks!

The app is very good. Perhaps the best way to find out if it will do it for
you is to try it. After all, its only 99 cents.

Along the same line, do any of these apps also have the capability to

Hi Sieghard. Glad I wasn't imagining the accessibility issues and that
someone else is also experiencing the same thing. Unfortunately, I
don't have a 4S, it's just a plain iPhone 4. I do, on the other hand
have a program called Voice Answer on here which is kinda like Siri but
I don't know if she has that same functionality to look for electronics
stores. Luckily I found someone that was selling their Sirius XM
receiver so I was lucky there. Now all I gotta do is find a pre-payed
Visa card because those bads won't accept my Visa debit card. It's stupid.

A few people have reported that one. Most likely, it is a slight problem with

You can do this if you have several keyboards installed on your phone. Then you

Hi.

Never used the old earbuds, but trying the new ones. Dumb question, though.
The middle button turns on/off, and the sides turn volume up and down, but
isn't there something I toggle to get those buttons to skip ahead/back or
fast forward/reverse? Thanks.

Re: magnifying apps

2012-10-03 Thread Damashe Thomas

Hi,
I bought the app visin assist for a friend and she seems to be very
satisfied with its performance. Here is the appstore link

Vision Assist
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/visionassist/id502356279?mt=8
It is currently priced at $5.99 in the appstore. This is not the only app
that provides this functionality, but it is the one I am familiar with as I
know several people who use it. If you have the free app from the braille
institute called VIA, it may provide more options for you.

friend gets a new phone tomorrow, want a refresher on first steps

2012-10-03 Thread Paul Ferrara
All, it’s been a while since we got our phones and had to set them up from
scratch. A friend named Ken gets one tomorrow, but he’s 500 miles away and
doesn’t have email, twitter, etc. So communication not using a phone is limited.
He is totally blind and has some hearing loss, almost no hearing in one ear in
fact. Here are my questions as best as I can think of them:

1. In the Sprint store, they can get vo running, put some contacts in, etc.
The things Ken has to do still are get an email address, subsequently set up an
Apple ID, synch his phone, etc. What order must he do these things in? Does he
have to use iTunes? If not, what can he do?
He will have limited help there, no one with full vision, and Ken just is not
tech savvy. He’s getting the iPhone mostly for Siri, to have access to texts,
email, and the Internet. His friends that live with him have a computer, but he
doesn’t use it, doesn’t use JAWS.

2. What do the hearing options in accessibility do?

If I need to clarify anything, let me know.

Thank you.

Re: New Gmail account -- seeking advice

2012-10-03 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I didn't see any answers to this question yet, so I apologize if I just
missed them. POP is good if you'll be downloading your mail messages and
keeping them on a single system, like a home PC. You can check messages
from other devices before they're removed from your email server, and
you can set up your email clients to either just leave the messages on
the server, download them to your device or just delete the message from
your server that you delete or file from your client. I haven't ever set
up POP on my iPhone, although I did use it for quite a while across
multiple PC's.

IMAP keeps all of your email and folders on a server. If you delete a
message from one client or move it to a folder, you'll see this change
on all of your clients. This is what I use now.

I think Exchange is similar in functionality to IMAP, but I don't use it
myself, other than to synchronize my Google Contacts with my iPhone.

When you set up your email account on your PC, what was your email
provider and what client were you using? Thunderbird will automatically
set up your email account for you, so it may figure out that you're
using IMAP or POP without ever asking you. The client will need to know
what protocol you're using though.

iOS 6 and SIM Card Switching

2012-10-03 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi all,

I was perusing a forum the other day and came across some strange
reports from people who own unlocked iPhones on iOS 6. The reports
claim that users are being presented with the activation screen upon
swapping in a SIM, and are requested to connect to the internet to
activate. Of course, this never used to be the case: once a phone is
unlocked, you are meant to be able to swap SIMS at your leisure
without ever having to reactivate. It wouldn't be ideal to have to
reactivate every new SIM, because you'd obviously have to have a data
connection to do the activation. When traveling this could be tricky.
The reports claim that this is a new measure in iOS 6 to curb
unauthorized unlocks.

The bizarre thing is that I've read an equal number of reports
claiming that this absolutely isn't the case and that users are not
being presented with the activation screen. I've also read theories
that this might differ between iPhones sold unlocked directly through
Apple, and carrier-unlocked phones; though I don't really see why this
should be the case.

Personally, I don't own an unlocked iPhone at the moment but am sure
that my upcoming iPhone 5 will be unlocked. I would therefore like to
ask what people's experiences are with unlocked iPhones, swapping SIMS
in iOS 6.

Grant

Email question

2012-10-03 Thread Shane Clark
Hi,
Has anyone noticed that when writing an email, but sending it To multiple
addresses, One gets stuck in the cc/B CC field? What has happened to me, is
when I entered in three email addresses, and I go to find the subject field, I
get stuck in this Cc/B cc field. The only way I can find the subject field, is
to remove the third email address, then write my email, then before sending, I
Anter the third email address, and all goes well. Is this a possible bug in iOS
six? I have already tried closing the app switcher and removing apps from it
and rebooting the phone. I'm running iOS six onan iPhone 4S. Thanks, Shane.

Re: Explanation on iPad please

2012-10-03 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi Shane

As far as I know, yes you do need to click on the tab to bring up the close tab
button. There may be another way but I have not come across it.

As for containers, these are major sections of the current UI. For example go
to the Mail app and put the rotor option on containers. Now use the up and down
flick to see how your focus is moved through the app. It is basically just
another way of moving through an interface. You might like to check out my
podcast on gestures specifically for the iPad in which I cover this topic. Link

 Hi All,
I've an iPad 3, and I need a little help on tabs. When Closing a tab, do you

 containers mean?
Also, does passbook come with the iPad when updating to iOS six? I can't seem
 to find It anywhere.
 Thanks, Shane.

Re: Explanation on iPad please

Sent from my iPhoneThanks So much Garth.
Did you by chance read my post regarding email? If not, here it is below.

 Hi Shane

As far as I know, yes you do need to click on the tab to bring up the close
tab button. There may be another way but I have not come across it.

As for containers, these are major sections of the current UI. For example go
to the Mail app and put the rotor option on containers. Now use the up and
down flick to see how your focus is moved through the app. It is basically
just another way of moving through an interface. You might like to check out

Re: Placing My membership on vacation/hold

2012-10-03 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I haven't seen this message answered yet, although it's been discussed
in the past. I hope I'm not answering a message that's already been
answered.

I'm not sure how you're trying to do this, i.e. what browser and screen
reader you're using. I'm using Orca and Firefox, and what I do is follow
the link at the bottom of each message. I make sure I'm logged in with
the account I used to subscribe to the group. I then click on the My
Membership button right above the list of messages in the group. There's
then a button that just gives my current subscription option, such as
Send a message for each post. I click on this button and a pull down
menu shows up, and I can arrow to the No messages option. I'm not sure
how much of this will work with your browser/screen reader combination.

As I said, this topic has been discussed recently on the list. Here's
such a message. Maybe this information will be more useful:

I'm pasting in the reply I gave Teresa three months ago about how to
change all membership options, including your mail preferences,
nickname, and the email address you want to use for receiving list
subscriptions for all mailing lists that you subscribe to via Google
Groups. This and related questions have come up frequently enough of
late to warrant a full post, but I personally use the search facility of
the Mail Archive site to find these and other answers, including my own
previous posts. I'm cc'ing this post to the viphone list, since it has
the information on changing email subscription options, too.

The mail-archive page for groups that are archived there is simply the
posting address appended to the www.mail-archive.com address, so for
macvisionaries the URL is:
http://mail-archve.com/macvisionar...@googlegroups.com
and for the viphone list the URL is:
http://mail-archive.com/viphone@googlegroups.com

I also use these web pages to read the list contents if I am traveling.
If I am using an iOS device, I can type my search term in to the text
box and press enter to find results, and then copy the URL of the
relevant post to an email reply. If I am at my computer, I can read up
and down the threads with access key combinations (Control-n for next
message and Control-p for previous message in Safari on a Mac; for other
browsers and platforms substitute the appropriate access key prefix --
such as Alt-n and Alt-p for Internet Explorer, or I think it is
Alt-Shift-n and Alt-Shift-p for Firefox, etc.)

Instructions on changing membership options follow:

Hi Teresa,

You can find a single page listing of all the Google Groups you belong
to using the URL:
http://groups.google.com/groups/mysubs?hl=en_USpli=1
This page has the entries for Manage My Memberships. There's a link
to My Google Account that will let you change your email address,
password, or nickname. Continue to navigate through the page to find
your entries, which are form controls, for each one of the Google Groups
you subscribe to, with your nickname, and pop up menus for your email
address and subscription type. Here you can change your subscription
options, for example, to No email, Digest email, Abridged email,
or Unsubscribe. For some of the other options, you have to use the
My Google Account link. The pop up menu for changing your email to an
alternate email address on this page only works if those alternate email
addresses are available from your main My Google Account settings --
you can't type in a new option directly on this page for managing your
settings if you're entering completely new information for your account.
But you can visit this page to turn off email temporarily while you're
away on vacation, or opt for the digest format. And if you want to
shift the list subscription email to a different email, you can visit
the My Google Account link, make the changes and add other valid email
addresses, and then come back to this page and set the pop up menu for
that address.

If you are not logged into your Google Groups account, when you try to
use the URL link for managing your membership settings, you'll be
prompted to log in with your email address and password. The email
address you type in here is the email address you used when you created
your Google Groups account. It does not have to be a gmail address, and
it may not be your current email address. The current email that you
want to use by default is one of the account settings that you can
change in this process, if you use the My Google Account link on the
page for managing your membership settings.

To log out from your Google account, you need to navigate to the menu
pop up link that has your name. (This is in the old Google Groups page
layout, so it might be different for you.) You could use item chooser
menu (VO-I) and type in your name (e.g., Teresa), then navigate to
