Re: typing phone numbers from keyboards and braille displays
Hi Anna, When you have this difficulty and it lets you enter a number and then doesn't, I found that if you go to another tab in the phone app, then back to the keyboard tab, you can enter the numbers again using the external keyboard. Ann - Original Message - From: Woody Anna Dresner wadres...@att.net To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 11:04 AM Subject: typing phone numbers from keyboards and braille displays Hi, I was curious to see whether in iOS 6 it was possible to dial phone numbers by typing them on external keyboards and braille displays. I turned on my Focus 40 Blue, opened the phone app, and typed a number. It appeared in the phone number box. Then I tried with my Mac keyboard using Type2Phone, and nothing was typed in. I tried with an Apple bluetooth keyboard, and nothing was typed in. Then I tried again with my braille display and had no luck. I can't imagine what was different about the one time the braille display worked. Has anyone done this successfully with any device, and if so, how? Re: accessible word games
I like the Hangman but downloaded two that did not work before finding the one that did. There is an Applevis podcast about the Stick Man and it advised to search for the words Jamsoft to find it. I like it a lot. I like worder but do not use an external keyboard and it seems that after a period of time getting words correctly spelled it starts entering the wrong letters. I go slowly and make sure that the game repeats the letter when I choose it but in the word box it is gibberish. So I quit for a while and sometimes go back. I like this game the best since you can set it for 3 letter words and you do not have to use the target letter in the words. But the malfunctioning is discouraging. There is an Applevis podcast on this one, too, but it uses a keyboard or braille display which does me no good. Touch target works well and is one with the 3 by 3 grid and you have to use the target letter and a 4 letter minimum. Only works by flicking and double tapping the letter since I don't have a keyboard. When I tried moving my finger around it would choose letters just by moving over them that I did not intend. I plan to try out some of the other recommendations. I like untimed, unstressful games. Is there an VO friendly version of Boggle? To find more games I would advise checking out the app reviews on Applevis.com. It is a treasure trove of information for a novice like me. Both apps can run in the background when a route is running, so you can also load Ariadne or one of the apps which displays nearby POIs if you wish. I usually just use Ariadne because it has a feature which automatically announces the updated address every 40 seconds or so. This is often all I need now that I have trained myself to navigate via street address rather than cross streets. One of my primary uses is on the bus. I have learned the nearby addresses for the stop I require. When the announced address gets close, I ring the bell and exit at my desired bus stop. In most cases, I no longer need to ask the bus driver for my stop to be announced. I also use Ariadne when looking for an address in an area that is familiar. With Ariadne, I just activate the app and activate the start monitor button. I can even activate Ariadne for a quick check of my current location and then close it again. The message slipped through the cracks and I just now found it again. The short answer to your question is yes. Meaning that for me, what I have works superbly and I don't feel like I'm lacking in what I have. Now, the long answer. I think it highly depends on what the user is expecting from an accessible GPS solution. I know the Sendero products well, and in fact, helped to develop the initial Sendero GPS user interface for the Braille Sense from HIMS when they started using Sendero. For me personally, using a combination of Navigon and Ariadne, or Waze and Ariadne, is enough. In the case of Ariadne, I get to know what street I'm on, the addresses I'm walking or driving by, the zip code, the direction I'm moving in, and the intersection when I get to it. Of course with an app like Navigon I have my turn by turn direction list. I can also of course use any other app of choice for this if I want. Mapquest, MotionX Drive, ETC. Even when I was working with Sendero to get the Braille Sense user interface and featureset working right, I didn't use all the features available unless I was testing them to make sure they work. For example, I don't need to always know if the intersection I'm coming up to is a t intersection, or if it dead ends. I don't need constant announcement of how close I am getting to the upcoming intersection. I don't always need the street name announced as I'm crossing it. All these are good features to have, but as I said at the beginning of this post, it depends on what the user wants. I feel that if the user wants the exact level of access and features found in the sendero products, and if the user wants this all available from one app so they don't have to switch, then they will be unsatisfied with what the iPhone currently offers. However if the user doesn't need all the extra features, and is ok with using at least 2 apps to get this level, then the current solutions I think are very nice. In fact, they are far more than what we used to have. Let's also consider the history. How long has Sendero been making GPS products, compared to how long have the blind had access to the iPhone. I personally feel that when Sendero comes out with their iPhone app, it will be a very nice thing and should offer people who need those extra features and maybe even more than what I've mentioned, to have a solution which will work for them. plus they will have the bonus of it all from one app, so there should be no switching. In the mean time, I can do what I need to do with what I have and I don't feel it is

Hi, Hope. Hope you enjoy big ben as much as I do. When you first go into the Big Ben app the screen seems blank. There's only one button which is unlabeled. When you find it, double tap and that will let you into the rest of the app where you can set chime frequency and other things. You still need to make sure your sounds are on in settings, notification, big ben. When I don't want to hear the chimes which I now have set to ring at the quarter hour, I just hit the mute switch. I personally feel that when Sendero comes out with their iPhone app, it will be a very nice thing and should offer people who need those extra features and

Reggie -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sherrie Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2012 7:09 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: accessible word games I like the Hangman but downloaded two that did not work before finding the one that did. You don't have to uninstall the light version in order to install the full version. Nook versus iBooks
Hi, I'm excited by the new availability of the Nook app. For folks who may have both, is the reading experience similar in both? I looked for a book yesterday at BN and found it, for Nook, at $14.99. I then looked on iBooks and it was available for $9.99. It will be nice to have 2 markets from which to choose, with different pricing options and sales offerings. Hopefully, Nook will evolve to include in app purchasing. The price and in app purchasing for this item were nice, but it sounds like the BN website to Nook link is super, too. This app is awesome! They have even thought about screen reader users on the Pc side as it is totally and 100% accessible! They have also thought about VoiceOver users very well. Prove it by double tapping on settings and switch on the use built in iOs Pdf reader for VoiceOver compatibility. Re: Nook versus iBooks
I don't think you will find in app purchasing for Nook; thank you Apple. Remember when you use to be able to buy books from the Audible app by linking directly to their store? Apple's insistence on taking a cut of all such sales caused folks like Audible and, I suspect Amazon and BN as well, not to offer such conveniences, and why should they? Interestingly, I just had the opposite experience as you did, Kiety, finding a book on Nook for $10.79, while the same was available on iBooks for $15. Choice is a very good thing, which is why I still hope Amazon makes the Kindle app accessible, since they generally do seem to have the best prices. Re: Nook versus iBooks
As I understand it, Apple's policy is that non-native apps aren't permitted to have in-app purchases. This applies to EBook apps. RE: Nook versus iBooks
In my opinion, the Nook app seems not quite as intuitive, but the reading is comparable or possibly even better on Nook. In Nook the two-finger swipe-down works wonderfully, and definitely as you read and two-finger double-tap to stop reading you can do anything and come right back to where you were reading. I very seldom search for anything in a book so will leave that to someone else. If I don't hear something, I can use the rrotor very successfully to spell or repeat the word. The delete a book function is not on the screen where you open the books, but a one-finger triple-tap brings up the annotation for the book and at the right upper part of the screen, slightly lower than the status bar there are things you can do with the book such as archiving and deleting. Archiving lets the book stay with BN in their cloud, (whatever a cloud is, must be like iCloud and I don't truly understand that either), so you can re-download it if you wish. All this to say that I am very pleasantly surprised by the app and will definitely use it, especially since they have books less than 5 dollars. Does iBooks do the same? I haven't found it, and to me that would win Nook more kudos from me. Reggie -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Nook versus iBooks
I'm not sure what your question related to, does iBooks do the same? Yes, they have books under $5. And yes, you can delete a book from a device and get it back later if you wish. One thing I really like about ibooks is the ability to organize your books in categories. You can't do that on the Nook app, and I can see a problem if one were to build up a large library of books and have no way to categorize them. You can do it on the nook device, but not on their app. Mary Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Contact question for Home
Better idea is to create a contact with your name and your home number listed. Put in your address and Siri will know where you live and you can also navigate to home. Put in your work address under the same contact and you can do this for work as well. It functions quite well although I seldom need to call home. Re: Nook versus iBooks
Teresa, In-app purchasing definitely exists and it's very popular. You can use it, say, to upgrade from List Recorder's Lite version to the pro version. Simple RSS, a great way to get push notifications for feeds
Hi all, Just wanted to give a plug for Simple RSS, a free app for reading news feeds and receiving push alerts for new content. The app is not without its fair share of annoyances; you can't import from OPML files and you can't sync with Google Reader, only import from it. Where the app shines though is its amazingly fast push alerts for new articles. In my experience the lag is well under fifteen minutes and probably closer to five, which rivals paid apps which can often take an hour or two to provide the latest push alert. My Windows 8 PC is set to refresh every fifteen minutes, and Simple RSS's push alerts are beating it every time. It's pretty simple, easy to navigate, and has decent sharing features. IPhone Screen question
Hi there, I was just wondering how you guys keep your screens clean and looking good. Of course I bought a screen protector, but I didn't really realize one day that my finger was the slightest bit sticky, and I barely touched the screen. Not sure if it left some kind of mark or spot, but I don't want my screen full of finger prints or marks if I can help it; although, of course, my fingers are all over that thing. What do you guys do to keep your phones looking as good as they did when you first got them? Jim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Before I got my screen protector, I used to get these wipes that were made just for cleaning lenses, computer screens, etc. They work really nicely on the IPhone screens. The issue is Outlook. I have the iPhone 5 running 6.01 and the iPod Touch 5TH generation also running 6.01 and neither one has the option to invite others to an appointment. Re: Nook versus iBooks
The accessibility documentation within the Nook app is truly astounding. I hardly ever see this level of Voiceover-specific tutorials in off-the-shelf apps. They really did try, and deserve a lot of kudos. Yes, I do recognize that there is still work to be done, but that is usually the case. BN does have a Mac and Windows app, and I would anticipate that accessibility will be improved for those as well. In the meantime, Nook books can be read using Adobe Digital Editions in Windows and Mac Platforms. Re: Nook versus iBooks
I don't know; I agree that the BE website is different than Amazon's website. That being said, if I go in and select nook book in the pop-up for my search, I am not having trouble navigating or finding what I am looking for. I just make sure when I am ready to buy that the book is a nook book if that's what I want. I hadn't used the website much before last night and after about five minutes of figuring it out, I was fine. I think the difference between BE and Amazon is kind of like the difference between windows and Mac OS or the iPhone and some other smart phone or Android phone you might use; as long as you keep remembering that they are different entities, it's okay; as soon as you start trying to compare, it gets confusing to try to use whichever one you have the least skill in using. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Re: My feelings about a total GPS solution for the blind - Was Re: Navigon on sale today only
Thanks for the reply Raul. Personally, I feel that the progress towards a fully accessible GPS experience on the iPhone is tremendous and exciting. But I have tried Navigon and Ariadne in tandem and don't really feel that it's there yet. Switching apps isn't a big deal for me, especially since as David pointed out, you can simply have an app like Navigon running in the background with Ariadne in the foreground. But I just don't know that it's worth the user investing time and resources especially into Navigon, as in my opinion the functionality just isn't there yet. As you said, it's fair to say that our reliance on GPS apps is a tad too high. But that doesn't seem to be a reason to suggest that we need less functionality. If you don't need cross streets, intersection announcements, the ability to set up custom routes, and so forth, then chances are you probably don't need more than the built-in Apple Maps (if anything) or Ariadne for a quick refresher on just where you are. Personally, I feel that the functionality offered by, say, Sendero for the BrailleNote, is invaluable. Firstly, it's important to get an idea of how an area is mapped out beyond simply relying on people to tell you, which includes descriptions of intersections and upcoming crossed streets. Secondly, it's a valuable resource when traversing pretty familiar, but not totally second nature routes. As David said hopping on a bus and getting an idea of when your stop is coming up, is exactly the kind of functionality that's easy to get on an iPhone right now. But for a true GPS solution I see the blindness-specific product as the way to go, at least for now. On 11/27/12, Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com wrote: Hello Grant, and anyone else interested, my apologies for not responding sooner. In the mean time, I can do what I need to do with what I have and I don't feel it is lacking for me. The other thing I want to mention, and I hate to, but I have to, is that there are some people who depend on GPS technology too much. I'm not knocking what's out there, because I think it's a great thing. However, let's all remember that when using any sort of GPS, always depend on your own orientation and mobility skills first. This is why I don't need to know if the intersection goes through or dead ends. However this might open up a debate and a can of GPS worms, and so I'll leave it at that. Hope this helped to answer your question. -- Raul A. Gallegos Too much

How Do You Force Portrait Mode?
I'm curious as how to force my iPhone 5 into Portrait Mode. Often, when in the Messages app, the phone will switch to Landscape Mode seemingly on its' own. I can't identify any consistent set of steps that cause this; only that I can be trying to find a button only to find that's in a completely unexpected position on the screen. Yes, VO announces the mode change, but I still find it ever so aggravating. Can anybody offer any suggestions? Another thing, when I want to delete a message I haven't been able to find a consistent, straight-forward set of steps to get this accomplished. When I'm in the Phone app and have Recents selected, all I need do is activate Edit, then locate the Delete buttons per call item or activate the Clear Button to get rid of everything. In the Message app, I activate a specific message and VO tells me to Swipe up or down to select a desired action; but often when I do this I get No header found instead. Can anybody tell me what's going on here? Is there a similar Clear procedure in the Message app? To You Yours: A Very Merry Christmas Happy New Year !!! Re: Sharing Calendar Appointment Info
Hi, Yes, if I choose More Info for an iCloud calendar, I get the option to share the calendar or to make a public read-only version available, but I don't get those options with a calendar that is only on my iPhone. Re: Nook versus iBooks
Hi, One thing that is helpful when seraching the BN store is that each book title includes an image of the book cover. So you can move between search results by moving by image, either on your computer or iPhone. There are a couple of other images associated with each book, but it's still a pretty fast way to move between search results. RE: Simple RSS, a great way to get push notifications for feeds
I see RSS feeds when I open webpages. Pardon my ignorance, what are these feeds? Do you have to pay for them? Curiously and looking for knowledge Reggie -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Grant Hardy Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2012 7:43 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Simple RSS, a great way to get push notifications for feeds Hi all, Just wanted to give a plug for Simple RSS, a free app for reading news feeds and receiving push alerts for new content. Re: how to open ms word docs in ibooks?
You need to use a different app. IBooks doesn't support MS Word format documents. I Like To Read will access Word Docs for you. You can also open them in Mail. Also, many of the text editor apps will open word docs for viewing only. If any one have any clues to how I can open ms word docs with the iBooks, please help me. Regards, Cris -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. I very seldom search for anything in a book so will leave that to someone else. If I don’t hear something, I can use the rrotor very successfully to spell or repeat the word. The delete a book function is not on the screen where you open the books, but a one-finger triple-tap brings up the annotation for the book and at the right upper part of the screen, slightly lower than the status bar there are things you can do with the book such as archiving and deleting. Archiving lets the book stay with BN in their cloud, (whatever a cloud is, must be like iCloud and I don’t truly understand that either), so you can re-download it if you wish. All this to say that I am very pleasantly surprised by the app and will definitely use it, especially since they have books less than 5 dollars. Does iBooks do the same?
