Well, I'm in Canada, and I switched my region to Ireland to get the default voice I wanted and it hasn't seemed to mess with the calendar or location. It did change the time format to 24 hour, but I can handle that, prefer it, in fact. what made me do this is because I had the irish voice in my router and every time I turned my phone back on it defaulted back to Daniel since I have my default to british english since I'm in Canada. It was irritating. I guess all you can do is try it and see if it messes up anything you find important. If it does, you can always switch back, right? My name is Caleb, and I'm one of the developers of a new iPhone app called BrailleTouch. BrailleTouch allows you to type using braille on your touchscreen, and is based on the standard six key braille keyboard. We are excited to announce that BrailleTouch will be on the App Store by the end of January! We hope that you will like BrailleTouch and find it useful. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have, and I've included some more information about the app below. With BrailleTouch, you can send text messages, emails, and tweets from the touchscreen braille keyboard. You can also copy text you type in braille to the clipboard and paste it into other apps on your iPhone. There is a free version of BrailleTouch, so you can try it before you buy it. The free version lets you type in braille and hear the text you entered. Many braille instructors have told us that they would like to use BrailleTouch as a teaching tool, which the free version will support. Additional features are available as In App Purchases. The Messaging Upgrade allows you to send text messages, emails, and tweets from the touchscreen braille keyboard. The Clipboard Upgrade allows you to copy text from the touchscreen braille keyboard and paste it into other apps on your iPhone. BrailleTouch is based on research conducted at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, where I am a graduate student. My colleagues and I tested the software with eleven volunteers who are blind. We found that people who knew the standard Perkins braille keyboard were able to master BrailleTouch within an hour of practice and type at an average of 23 words per minute using Grade 1 braille. We received such positive feedback that we were inspired to take this research out of the laboratory and release BrailleTouch to the public. We hope this software will provide a helpful alternative to the VoiceOver split tap keyboard, and that it will help improve the mobile computing experience for people in the blind community who use an iPhone. BrailleTouch is fully compatible with VoiceOver. It works on the iPhone 3GS through the iPhone 5, iPod touch models since the 3rd generation, and requires iOS 5.0 or a later operating system. BrailleTouch is only for the iPhone and iPod touch, and is not supported on the iPad. The first release is based on North American English Grade 1 Uncontracted Braille. You can choose to hear speech feedback for each character you type, each word you type, or both. More information about BrailleTouch is available on our website: http://brailletouchapp.com/ The website includes a User Guide and Frequently Asked Questions. You can also sign up for our email list, and we will notify you when we have an exact release date in January for the app. We are also on Twitter: https://twitter.com/brailletouch With the free version of BrailleTouch, you can try out the touchscreen braille keyboard and hear the text that you typed read back to you. The Messaging Upgrade allows you to send text messages, emails, and tweets, and costs US$9.99. The Clipboard Upgrade allows you to copy text from the braille keyboard to paste into other apps, and costs US$9.99. You must have the Messaging Upgrade first before you can get the Clipboard Upgrade. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. We are very excited about the upcoming release of BrailleTouch on the App Store. I hope that you will like BrailleTouch and find it useful. Hi All, I shut down the iPad, waited a minute and restarted it. Now list Recorder Full works just fine. Thanks. Last March, I bought an iPad3, and synched all the apps on my iPhone4S with my iPad3, including list recorder lite, which still works fine on the iPad3. A couple days ago, on my iPhone, I purchased List Recorder full from the app store. It works fine on my iPhone. I can't do anything with list recorder full on my iPad. I have deleted and reinstalled the app a number of times, but I get the same results, the app opens, but none of the buttons work. They are not dimmed, they just don't work. I have tried to repurchase list recorder full from my iPad, but the app store won't let me. I have open list recorder lite on the iPad(it still works), went into help and upgrade, but the option to purchase list recorder full is dimmed. I would appreciate any help with this issue. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
I will have to try it, however, I normally use a braille display with my I phone. Type-in-Braille was what I was referring to. In the past when I tried that one, I found it very difficult to use because when you pressed a combination of letters, the keys use to stay down and so the correct letters never got written as I could never understand what to do with it. How different will this be, will the keys instantly come up as if you were typing on a perkins? How will we know that a letter has been completed, will Voice Over just anounce it and we know that it's been done? I encourage you to get grade 2 out as soon as possible. Kawal. On 30 Dec 2012, at 01:09 PM, BrailleTouch viph...@brailletouchapp.com wrote: Hi Kawal, Which other braille typing app are you referring to. BrailleTouch is very different from TypeInBraille. Our testers were able to transfer their skills from a standard Braille keyboard to BrailleTouch in less than an hour of practice and type an average of 23 words per minute. The other app is Type Brailler Learn Braille. BrailleTouch has a similar keyboard layout. But BrailleTouch is fully compatible with VoiceOver, and you do not have to set your hand location before typing. BrailleTouch is also designed to let you quickly send text messages, emails, tweets, or copy text to the clipboard directly from the braille keyboard. I hope this helps. Hi Kawal, With BrailleTouch, you type each braille chord on your touchscreen with the same six fingers you would use on a Perkins Brailler or similar keyboard. The app will speak each character you type immediately. You can also choose to hear each word you type, or both characters and words, from VoiceOver. BrailleTouch reads each character as soon as you lift your fingers off the touchscreen. Grade 2 is our top priority for a future update. RE: Podcast question
Grant, what you want to do is not a Windows function; it is controlled through your particular podcast app. I personally use Downcast and have found I can control which podcasts are downloaded. I have it set to download new content for my specified ppodcasts every time I open it. Then I have it deleting all played podcasts. You can control the playback speed and have it play continuously. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
type in braille is quite different from what I understand brailletouch will be. It usually took more than one tap to do a letter; for instance, l was three taps on the left; letters were broken up into components depending on where the dots of the cell fell. With this, if I understand correctly, a letter will take only one tap because you will tap with all the fingers involved in the letter at once. So, for instance, the letterl will be one tap but with your second, third and forth fingers on your left hand all together. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
Yes, this is another thing I like about BrailleTouch compared to Fleksy and Type In Braille (btw I got fairly fast with Type in Braille so I'm expecting to do quite well with BrailleTouch as it will be much more straightforward). I like hearing my letters when I type them and not having to flick or swipe or anything to check what i wrote. The thing is: I can visualize (or maybe tactilize!) what it would feel like to do the Perkins braille combinations with my fingers on the phone so half the battle of learning to do this is already conquered. I know it will still be a bit different when I actually get the app, but I've been sitting holding my locked phone in what I believe is the right position and tapping my fingers down in the right combinations for practice. Okay, I suppose that sounds rather crazy, but I'm really anticipating this app and want to be as ready as possible when it comes out! -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Upgraded to 4s
I recently got a 4s but still have my 4. They just took the card from the 4 and put it in the 4s. I had backed up my old phone and then hooked up the new to itunes and it eventually copied my apps and such over. 1 I had entered several contacts on the old phone which never got transfered to the new, someone would call me and then I'd put their name and number in the contact list. Why didn't these get copied over? 2 My apps on the old phone are much more organized than on the new. I can still use the old one and sometimes try out some of my old apps and then delte them. I've also been trying out apps on the new phone and deleting the ones that aren't accessible. I downloaded a whole bunch just for testing purposes and haven't got through them yet. Can I delete apps from the old or the new phone and have the same apps deleted from the other phone. Yes it does seem a bit senseless to have two devices doing the same thing but I haven't decided what to do with the old phone yet. I do have wireless here at home and my old phone can connect to my mom's wireless though they don't know their password so my new one can't LOL. BrailleTouch App cost comparison
Hello, If this was posted, please forgive me. I am having some difficulty emailing from the phone. If this app will do what it says, then I will definitely support the app and purchase it. That is the bottom line for me. I would like to point out that some of the individuals that may be concerned about the cost, may have purchase either Read2Go or Digit-Eyes. Both of these apps cost $20 to have them installed on our iDevices. I use both of these apps extensively, and they were worth every cent that I spent. For those that do not have the resources to purchase a braille display or braille note taker, then this app will fit the bill nicely to process in braille. As a rehabilitation therapist and occupational therapist for individual with visual impairments, this app will be an adjunct when performing braille training. Once contracted braille is added, it will be a pleasure to word process in braille. I can't wait to see how the app will work and take it for a spin. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
Caleb, Are you planning on releasing Braille Touch for iPad, or is it not possible? Andrew On 31 Dec 2012, at 14:25, BrailleTouch viph...@brailletouchapp.com wrote: Hi Kawal, With BrailleTouch, you type each braille chord on your touchscreen with the same six fingers you would use on a Perkins Brailler or similar keyboard. BrailleTouch reads each character as soon as you lift your fingers off the touchscreen. Grade 2 is our top priority for a future update. How different will this be, will the keys instantly come up as if you were typing on a perkins? How will we know that a letter has been completed, will Voice Over just anounce it and we know that it's been done? I encourage you to get grade 2 out as soon as possible. RE: Battery for 4S
I did reply to your initial post that apart from implementing some of these power saving tricks, your two options are either an external battery or a battery case. As for battery cases, most of the ones I have seen are basically the same, the phone slides in and the battery is usually behind the phone. These do add to the thickness of the phone more than the size and you just have to do your research as to which one you want. With people on this list living all over the world it's hard to make a specific recommendation and then maybe the product isn't available. Amazon, the Apple Store (online or retail stores), Best Buy, Radio Shack, any of these places will have battery packs/cases. In a way Amazon and the Apple Store online have the advantage that the products have ratings and you can read user reviews. I am not sure which iPhone you have, but you want a battery pack that has at least the same capacity or more than the capacity of your iPhone's battery. Most battery cases seem to be in the 1,400 to 2,100 MA capacity and while the ones with a larger capacity may be slightly thicker I would opt for one that has at least 1,900 or 2,000 MA which means you should get one full charge and change out of it. Below are the battery specs for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5, in addition to Millie Amps batteries usually also have a WH or WHR rating, that stands for Watt Hours and while I am not a physisist, you can compare that number for the iPhone against that of the battery case if it is given. iPhone 4: 1,400 MA, 4.8 WHr iPhone 4S: 1,432 MA, 5.3 WHr iPhone 5: 1,445 MA, 5.45 WHr Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Upgraded to 4s
Hi Tessa, Starting at the end of your post, the WiFi password cannot be viewed. Depending on which router they have, you can see the WiFi password and change it if you know how to log on to the router, but that of course requires a password as well. If your parents never changed it, then you can find out what the default router password is by doing a Google search for your brand/model of router, often a particular brand uses the same default password. For example, Netgear routers usually use admin as the user name and password as the password. Of course this is supposed to be changed by the user, but you'd be surprised how many users never do change this. If you can't log on to the router you could do a factory reset of the router (there is usually a Pinhole in the back and you poke a paper clip or something like that into it). Of course this would wipe out any custom settings. You will also need the routers Ip address, once again, this is brand specific. Many use 192.168.0.1, some use 192.168.1.1 (Netgear) and there maybe others. OK, now as far as your apps are concerned, you can keep your phones in sync if you use the same Apple Id on both phones and if you go into Settings and Store and tell both phones to automatically sync apps then if you delete an app on one phone it will also delete from the other phone, if you buy an app on one phone it will also appear on the other phone. Of course if you want to have separate apps, music and so on on each phone you should not enable this. If your iPhone 4 is still in good condition you could ask your provider to give you unlock instructions which they should do if the phone is no longer under contract. Then you can unlock it which would allow you to easily sell it. You can google iPhone 4 resale values or something like to get an idea what they are going for. Re: You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.
Gina, Two thins of note; Apple could never claim, nor could we, that their products were originally designed for the blindness market. Its in none of their marketing materials etc, Apple have specifically designed this for blind users and not sighted ones etc. Secondly, having pushed Apple hard on this, that is , why some stores do it, and others do not. I have received an e-mail from them last week confirming that an error had been made at certain stores… That Apple would pay the VAT on the orders to date that they should not have let through, and that they would not be making this clear mistake into the future. I rang the store that I had got the VAT off of only four weeks ago, and asked to speak to the same employee… Without indicating that I knew that things in theory had changed, I asked if I could come back and buy another Mac… He stated, not with VAT nil rated, that they had receive a directive from head office, explaining that they had been breaching VAT regulations and that they could no longer nil rate VAT. so that, as they say is that. Hi List, The topic about taxes on Apple products especially in the UK where there is a very high VAT has come up again and again over the last couple of months. I just wanted to comment that it should be up to organisations like the RNIB in the UK, the CNIB in Canada, the NFB in the States and so on to sort this out with the government. In a way I would argue that even though a Mac or an iPhone is not specifically made for the blind, Apple has invested a lot of money and effort to make it into a device for the blind and, as a rule, a much less expensive device than products specifically designed for the blind. This could be easily regulated by setting straight forward rules for when a person could obtain a tax exemption, e.g. it could be done by providing a certificate from a Doctor stating that the person really is blind and entitled for the exemption. You would then take this to the Apple Store to get your product without paying taxes. Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Tax exemptions, was: You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.
Don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but I've heard that all the apple products blind people in the UK can be exempt from VAT or whatever it is if they buy fom the Apple stores. All their products except the iPhone itelf apparently. I don't know why or if it's true, but that's just what I was told by a friend a few days ago. On 31 Dec 2012, at 5:34 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi List, The topic about taxes on Apple products especially in the UK where there is a very high VAT has come up again and again over the last couple of months. RE: Gmail Account on iPhone4 is Rejecting Posts to the Group
Hi, To answer your questions, this is the account that is subscribed to the list and it is my GMAIL email that is both on my iPhone4 and PC. I know that the they are both configured the same for out and in coming mail. The iPhone4 will only state that the Viphone group server has rejected the email. I would have to try it again to get the exact error message that the phone reads out with VO. I know this is going to sound like asking the obvious, but are you using the same email address on your phone as on your pc and if not, is the email address on your phone subscribed to the list? Re: XM online
Can you get the NFL audio with that subscription? I am finding that as little as I use the Sirius app for music, the sub will be going in February when those two free months I got by trying to cancel last week are up. I would like a way to have Nascar also as there is no MRN radio affiliate in my area, unless you have the right radio conditions and listen from a vehicle. Even then, I don't think $225 a year for the premier package and web listening is worth it. I was hoping that I could just activate the web account for the months that sports are on I'm interested in and then cancel, versus doing that with a receiver and paying $15 to keep reactivating, but I'm sure there's easier and better ways to listen to that stuff. - Original Message - From: Patti Johnson To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, December 31, 2012 12:20 PM Subject: XM online I just spoke to some one at Sirius XM and she said you could have an online account only for $14.95 a month, and use that same account on your Iphone. New member and introduction
Hi all, I just joined this list, so I'm a new member. My name is Lori and I live in Ohio. This afternoon I will be going out with my fiancee to purchase my new Iphone 5. I did get to see the Iphone 4 and 5 briefly and I was impressed with what I saw. So with me going to be a new I phone user what things do I need to know about the Iphone? RE: wireless printer recommendations compatible with i devices and Windows pcs
Hi, Rick found a system to install the Airprint service on a Windows machine that is free. You have to follow a few links to find the one you want but if you follow the guys instruction, it works well. A friend set it up to print wirelessly from my laptop. So I installed an app on my iPhone 5 called Printer Pro light to see if I could print from my phone on it. This is a free app that allows you to check to see if your printer is usable. It did print the test page and my husband says it looks good. Now to use it to print regular documents I need to download the regular Printer Pro for iPhone app that costs $4.95. Not a bad price but I am trying to decide if i really need to print from my phone since I don't have any documents there that are not on my laptop. But the Printer Pro app seems to be pretty good and reasonable. There were two HP apps that were free but they did not detect my printer. Go figure. Confused new member
Just joined this list, and for starters, I'm very excited and can't wait for the release of the Braille Touch app. However, I am very confused as to the routing of messages. Here is what is going on, and perhaps someone can shed some light on this. I subscribed with an e-mail address that I typically use for all group messages. This is an address from my Internet Provider. This means that messages should go to my PC, or at least that's what I thought. Messages are coming to my phone, which uses a gmail account, not the account I subscribed with. I do have my IP e-mail address in my contacts under my name so that I can send myself messages on occasion. But I don't understand why the messages are being routed to my gmail account on my phone, when I subscribed with my server IP address. I quite like getting the messages on my phone now, but it would make it difficult to reply from there as that's not the subscribing account they are coming in on. Explanations, please? Thanks. Re: i pad mini accessories?
I'm still kitting up mine, so can't make final judgements. I think the keyboard is one of, or a close workalike, of the Amazon basic, good size for full size iPad, bigger than the Mini, but what the heck, it's a good fit to the hand and works well. Case, tons of flip cover type with magnets to operate the screen lock, but heading for military grade impact protection and not bothered about bulk. No one has mentioned using the iBalls yet, it's not a case, but makes pretty good protection by all accounts, as it's like for rubber fenders on the corners; makes good high grip feet when you lay it down or prop it up. Re: Upgraded to 4s
All modern routers we've had, have a label stuck to the back or bottom and the password is unique; or their security would be worthless. This includes those provided by cable providers. RobH. - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, December 31, 2012 5:08 PM Subject: RE: Upgraded to 4s Hi Tessa, Starting at the end of your post, the WiFi password cannot be viewed. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
Hello, If I understand it right. The phone is held to provide a more like stainsby / shorthand machine formation rather than a perkins? As with the stainsby, could the keys be reversed? For those used to writing braille on a frame or the standard stainsby? i.e. The letter a dot 1 generated by the index finger of the right or left hand? Or is the orientation dots 1 4 are generated by the third finger of each hand? What version of grade 1 is the app going to use? Is it computer braille thus numbers are lower case letters? Or do you need to use the number sign? Is the full stop 2 5 6 or 4 6? Or will this be switchable upon release? Thanks. Gena On 30/12/2012 06:10, BrailleTouch wrote: Hi Richard, Thanks for your post. Can I ask you to reconsider the term chord! Those were always used, hitherto; to relate to using the space key as a modifyer to get control hcaracters; S chord for Status, P chord for Print, O chord for Options, and things like that. The six dots for the character or symbol are just that, unshifted or modified in any way. I'll put the same argument a different way. If you initiate a message, it will default to whatever address you got set as default; hwichi ndeed may not be the one subscribed. So after the To field, there's a CC/BCC thing, and then the address you're sending from, hwich is a button you can tap and then select from your addresses/identities you goton that phone. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
Hi all. I think one thing we all have to remember is that it costs money to develop these aps. is the price for the ap a bit steep? Yes, but, if it helps them make the changes you all are asking them to make in future releases... shouldn't we suport them so they can do that? As an avid braille suporter, I will buy this ap, and hope that my small contribution will help. I one $20 is a lot for an ap, but I look at it as suporting the developers in creating an ap that I think most of us have been waiting for for awhile. As was stated in a previous email by the developer, we can try it out and if we don't like it, we don't have to purchase the add ons. Just my .02 (smile). We are very excited about the upcoming release of BrailleTouch on

Re: Upgraded to 4s
Sieghard is referring to the user ID and password you use to log onto your router, and he's correct, if you haven't changed this then you can look up the defaults on line or n your router's documentation. Obviously, not changing this is a security concern, but someone would have to already be on your network to even try to log in in the first place. I think you're referring to the WPA key used to get on to the wireless network, where you are correct, this is unique to the router and can usually be found on a sticker on the router itself. On 31/12/12 11:29, Rob Harris wrote: All modern routers we've had, have a label stuck to the back or bottom and the password is unique; or their security would be worthless. When you get home after practicing gestures, you can figure out how to put apps in to folders to clear up the home page! Help with new motorola hx550 bluetooth earphone
I bought the motorola hx550 because it is supposed to have good battery life and work with siri. I got it paired successfully with two phones and know how to switch between the phones. I made a call and was told I sounded fine. But I have a couple of other questions if anybody else has this. 1. You can wear this phone three different ways: in ear without loop, on ear, and in ear with loop gells (I think I got that right). But I'm having a little trouble figuring out some of these items and figuring out how to put them on. For now I have it in my ear with no loops or gels. If naybody can sort me through the items tat come in the box and what to do with them, I'd appreciate it if you would give it a try. 2. When I push the talk button , siri appears to come on but doesn't go on to respond usually. Or I get to the listen button and press it and talk and nothing happens. I can exit okay. Any tips? At one point I saw something that gve me two choices: hx550 or iPhone; I'm not sure wht I chose but I hope I can get back to that coice if I have to. One thing I do like: if I hold in the button, it redials the previous number; I've been wanting a redial. Is there a way to see the password on my old phone or is that hidden for security. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
Actually, according to the user guide, it appears to me that the default layout will be just like a Perkins brailler. You hold the phone in landscape mode with the screen away from you. Then your left index finger will be dot 1, left middle dot 2, and the finger next to your pinky will be dot 3. The right hand would be the same: dot 4 is your right index finger; dot 5 is your right middle finger; dot 6 is the finger next to your right pinky. This would be exactly like a Perkins braille writer. Flipping dots 1 and 3 and flipping dots 4 and 6, if I'm picturing this crrectly, would put dots 1 and 4 under your fingers next to your pinkys. So in the flipped setting, a c would be at the two far ends of your two-hand position while in the normal default setting the letter c would be the two center points of your two-hand position. The default setting should be immediately comfortable for those of us who use a Perkins brailler; if I am picturing this correctly, I would find the flipped keyboard confusing but I imagine that depends on what you use for writing. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. There is a free version of BrailleTouch. We hope this will be useful for braille instructors, as well as for people who want to try the app out. You do not have to buy an upgrade to use it with your students. The free version goes beyond the research prototype we developed at Georgia Tech, which many braille instructors contacted us about. It will read back characters, words, or both as you type. It will also speak the full sentence that you typed in braille. I hope you will find this useful with your students.
