Re: Another example of Apple being super stupid
Sieghard, Perhaps Apple are planning on releasing one, if not, perhaps they don't want folk to cling on to their old devices. I'm not saying that is right or wrong, just, that there is always a reason… Kick Starter projects are becoming ever more common place, and the general public should be more cautious as to what they invest in. What was the project? It was for a charging station which had both a 30-Pin dock and a Lightning dock. Even Rob from Today in iOS who is a huge Apple proponent couldn’t believe this pettiness. I personally don’t have a device yet with a Lightning connector, but I always defended Apple’s decision to introduce a new connector. It’s smaller, you can plug it in either way and if it had to be done then it had to be done. However, to go out and prevent an entrepreneur or entrepreneurs to bring a product to market which many people would have appreciated shows no grace whatsoever especially since it’s not like Apple was offering something like that themselves. Re: BrailleTouch app cost comparison
Hi Sandy. Thanks for your question. We designed BrailleTouch so that you hold the phone in the special way, with two hands in landscape and the screen facing away from you. The advantage of doing this is that it allows your fingers to naturally fall on the touchscreen braille keyboard without any tactile landmarks. We have tested this with many blind users with great success! Some people have told us they have also had success laying the phone on a flat surface and typing with BrailleTouch. We have not officially tested this, so we don't officially support this way of using the app or include this in our User Guide. However, I encourage people to try this out if they would prefer to type this way. This is one of the reasons we offer a free trial of BrailleTouch, so you can see how it works for you before purchasing the upgrade. We welcome any feedback on using BrailleTouch in this non-standard way. For this way of typing to work, you will need to make sure that your left hand stays on the left side of the screen for dots 1-2-3, and your right hand stays on the right side of the screen, for dots 4-5-6. Otherwise BrailleTouch will become confused as to what braille characters you are typing. Hi Rebecca, BrailleTouch supports regular uppercase numbers. You type the number sign, then the letters A through J for numbers 1 through 9 and 0. We also support the decimal point, slash, and the letter sign. On a related note, BrailleTouch is based on the BANA Grade 1 standards. We support numbers, capital letters, and most punctuation. RE: braille touch question numbers
Kathy, This is not a physical keyboard but an app which allows you to use Grade 1 braille to type text on your touch screen. I won't go into this further because this has been discussed to death in the last week or so already even though the app will not be available until the end of January. You can lookup Braille Touch in the archives or go to their website at www.BrailleTouchApp.com and read all about it. There is also a Podcast demonstrating how this works on www.Applevis.com. Why can't one do it in the Learning Ally app. It's running on the same principle. I understand that one needs to purchase the books or magazines from the 3rth party and then sync it to the phone, but in the case of Learning Ally, I don't think it should be this way. HTH. On the podcast, Mr Hanson says he holds the phone in the palms with the screen facing away and the thumbs supporting the back of the phone. Would that mean that dots six and three are in the middle of the screen and dots one and six are closest to the ends of the phone? Sorry, meant one and four. Re: BrailleTouch app cost comparison
Hi Reggie, Actually, in BrailleTouch, dots 1, 2, and 3 run down the left side of the screen. Dots 4, 5, and 6 run down the right side of the screen. The three keys for each hand are turned sideways, but you still use the same fingers as you would on a standard six key braille keyboard. Here's a description from the User Guide on our website: We designed BrailleTouch so that you hold your phone in two hands with the screen facing away from you. Let's get familiar with how to hold the phone. First, pretend that you have a Perkins style braille keyboard on a table in front of you. Place your fingers on the imaginary six keys on the table. The first three fingers of each of your hands should be touching the table. Now lift your hands up, and turn your hands so your palms are facing each other. This is how you will hold the phone when typing in braille. Now pick up your phone and turn it in landscape orientation, with the long side going from left to right. Flip the phone around so the screen is facing away from you, with the Home button on your right. Hold the phone between your two hands. Some people support the phone by pressing in with the palms of their hands from the left and right sides. Some people hold the phone with their two thumbs on the top and their little fingers on the bottom. Make sure the first three fingers of each hand are free to move and are not touching the screen, so you can type with them. Try different ways of gripping the phone until you find what is most comfortable for you. When you are comfortable holding the phone in this special way, you are ready to start BrailleTouch! For best results, we recommend using a case with your iPhone or iPod touch. This will help you grip the phone in two hands. In addition, a case will keep your hand from covering the speaker under the Home button on the iPhone. If you use headphones, we recommend either using a Bluetooth wireless headset, or using a right angle headphone jack so you can grip the phone comfortably. I hope this helps! Yes, thanks for the confirmation about the location of the dots. I noticed this in the podcast. I had also been picturing a line of dots running from left to right across the long edge of the phone. Now it is clear that there are two groups of dots: 1-3 at one end of the phone and 4-6 at the other end. Although I read the manual, I did not understand this at first. RE: Another example of Apple being super stupid
Hi Matthew, Thanks for referencing that article. It goes to show what public opinion can do, but it's too bad that Apple needs the spanking first and to me the fact that they changed the rules shows that it was not a driver or technical issue where Apple shot down the project in order to prevent a bad product from coming to market. In any case, it's good to know that public opinion can influence even powerful corporations and let's not kid ourselves, companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung etc. are powerful and can ride rough shot over smaller companies if they want to. Yes and you don't have to buy it if you can't afford it either. There is a free demonstration mode as part of the Duxbury program where saving is disabled and a watermark appears when translating to Braille. Otherwise it is fully functional. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen

My name is Caleb, and I'm one of the developers of a new iPhone app called BrailleTouch. BrailleTouch allows you to type using braille on your touchscreen, and is based on the standard six key braille keyboard. We are excited to announce that BrailleTouch will be on the App Store by the end of January! We hope that you will like BrailleTouch and find it useful. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have, and I've included some more information about the app below. With BrailleTouch, you can send text messages, emails, and tweets from the touchscreen braille keyboard. You can also copy text you type in braille to the clipboard and paste it into other apps on your iPhone. There is a free version of BrailleTouch, so you can try it before you buy it. The free version lets you type in braille and hear the text you entered. Many braille instructors have told us that they would like to use BrailleTouch as a teaching tool, which the free version will support. Additional features are available as In App Purchases. The Messaging Upgrade allows you to send text messages, emails, and tweets from the touchscreen braille keyboard. The Clipboard Upgrade allows you to copy text from the touchscreen braille keyboard and paste it into other apps on your iPhone. BrailleTouch is based on research conducted at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, where I am a graduate student. My colleagues and I tested the software with eleven volunteers who are blind. We found that people who knew the standard Perkins braille keyboard were able to master BrailleTouch within an hour of practice and type at an average of 23 words per minute using Grade 1 braille. We received such positive feedback that we were inspired to take this research out of the laboratory and release BrailleTouch to the public. We hope this software will provide a helpful alternative to the VoiceOver split tap keyboard, and that it will help improve the mobile computing experience for people in the blind community who use an iPhone. BrailleTouch is fully compatible with VoiceOver. It works on the iPhone 3GS through the iPhone 5, iPod touch models since the 3rd generation, and requires iOS 5.0 or a later operating system. BrailleTouch is only for the iPhone and iPod touch, and is not supported on the iPad. The first release is based on North American English Grade 1 Uncontracted Braille. You can choose to hear speech feedback for each character you type, each word you type, or both. More information about BrailleTouch is available on our website: http://brailletouchapp.com/ The website includes a User Guide and Frequently Asked Questions. You can also sign up for our email list, and we will notify you when we have an exact release date in January for the app. We are also on Twitter: https://twitter.com/brailletouch With the free version of BrailleTouch, you can try out the touchscreen braille keyboard and hear the text that you typed read back to you. The Messaging Upgrade allows you to send text messages, emails, and tweets, and costs US$9.99. The Clipboard Upgrade allows you to copy text from the braille keyboard to paste into other apps, and costs US$9.99. You must have the Messaging Upgrade first before you can get the Clipboard Upgrade. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. We are very excited about the upcoming release of BrailleTouch on the App Store. I hope that you will like BrailleTouch and find it useful. Editing Text With Braille Touch
I have listened to the podcast, looked through the topics list in the manual, and the faq, and did not find an answer to the following. RE: Location services - impact on battery
Hi Keith, In the list of apps that you allowed to access location services you can see if an app has used location services in the last 24 hours. One good way to try this is by using SIRI or an app like Ariadne or Sendero. In my opinion it doesn't matter how many apps you allow to access location services, as long as you are not using those apps it shouldn't affect your battery. So, I could have 5 navigation apps which are allowed, but if I make sure they are closed and probably best removed from the app switcher and if I never use one of these apps for an entire month then they should have no impact whatsoever on your battery. I found location based reminders do make a difference as Reminders checks your location quite a lot so you may not want to set a reminder saying Remind me to call John when I get to work knowing you have a week off and won't get to your office during that time. If you want to conserve battery it is better to turn WiFi off if you are out and about and don't use it since I find WiFi does make quite a big difference, probably more so than Bluetooth. The category itself can be toggled On and Off, and under that, any number of apps can be individually toggled On and Off. Is battery drain primarily from the category of Location Services being toggled On, or is the impact of multiple apps with Location Services toggled On much greater? Will enabling Location Services for 15 apps drain the battery more than enabling Location Services for only 5 apps? Or, is the battery drain from Locations Services a function of the category being enabled, and enabling app Location Services just allows those apps to access the info already onboard? Hi Arnold, I am not the developer, but I am 99.99% sure that you will first have to either send your text to mail or messages or copy it to the clipboard and then put it into an app like Notes, Mail or any other app which is basically a text editor. help with saytext please!
Hi, everyone: In search of a useable o cr app, I just downloaded the free app, Saytext. I tried following the instructions of, placing the iphone on the page after opening the app, and slowly raising the iphone from the page. Nothing happened. I notice that one of the buttons in the app is to take a picture, but the instructions indicate that that this is not necessary. The app doesn't work for me. If anyone has had success using it, I would greatly appreciate any tips. Thank you. Martin Nelson -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Switching from Apple TV to Regular TV
Hi Linda, How you switch depends on how your cable box and Apple TV are connected. If you have a TV which has multiple HDMI inputs which most TV's do nowadays and you have your cable box on HDMI 1 and your Apple TV on HDMI 2, then the only way to switch is to use your TV's remote and use the Input selection feature. Unfortunately most TV's have a button for this, then pressing that button brings up a menu on the screen which shows all your inputs and you would have to use the arrows on your remote and the enter button to select the one you want. This could be done without sight provided the menu focus is always at the top so you know you would have to arrow down once or twice or something like that. I have a surround sound receiver, all my sources (satellite, blueray player, Apple TV etc.) are connected to the HDMI inputs on the receiver and the HDMI output of the receiver is connected to HDMI 1 on my TV. This way I never have to do anything with the TV except turn it on or off and, unless somebody is around who can see, I don't even turn on my TV. The receiver's remote fortunately has shortcuts to the most common inputs on the remote so I know which button is HDMI 1 (my satellite), which one is HDMI 2 (my blueray player) and which is HDMI 3 (my Apple TV). This setup is a bit more user friendly, but if you use a TV maybe ask a sighted person to figure out how to change it and teach you the combination of buttons and arrow keys you need. First of all you have to of course understand how your cable box and Apple TV are connected, but unless your Apple TV is somehow connected through your cable box, changing things with the remote for it won't help. Hello. I've had this problem for some weeks. I have a schedule for Do Not Disturb for example, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. However, this is not working and it has not been working for some weeks. It doesn't matter if I switch the phone off or on or I get rid of everything from the Appswitcher. I think this feature stopped working a couple of weeks ago. Any ideas? Steve Job's first IPhone story
Hi all, Since this is an apple product related list, just thought I would pass on a link to a very funny 60 Minutes piece on a very talented product designer. I'm particularly interested in the anecdote regarding Steve Job's cancer and the gift he gave his friend--The first model IPhone. Listen to what happen when Steve Jobs tries to activate the phone via ATT. I especially appreciate his advice to David--don't waste your time with alternative medicine. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50138327n LS -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Hi Sieghard; What brand of receiver are you using? Some of the list members may find this information very useful. Thanks in advance. Anthony Sent from my Verizon iPhone 5! On Jan 6, 2013, at 9:46 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Linda, How you switch depends on how your cable box and Apple TV are connected. Re: Editing Text With Braille Touch
HI, after reading the FAQ, and as I understand, doesn't this BlindTouch seem like an accident prone way of typing? If you're standing, and if you hold the IPhone or IPod touch in the horizontal manner as suggested, typing with fingers at the top of the device or typing with fingers at the bottom of the device, the IPhone or IPod will be held with a very loose grip. This is especially true for characters that use upper and lower characters such as S and T. In other words, this does not seem like a very safe manner of data entry on an IPod or IPhone. For those who own these devices, just simulate holding the device sideways and try typing each character of the word nuts as in walnuts. This is not a problem if one is sitting, but if one is standing up right in a line, you'd better hope there is carpeting under you. Re: brailletouch podcast backwards
I'll quote from the user guide on the web page:- Holding the Phone Welcome to BrailleTouch, an app that lets you type in braille on your touchscreen! We designed BrailleTouch so that you hold your phone in two hands with the screen facing away from you. Letapos;s get familiar with how to hold the phone. Flip the phone around so the screen is facing away from you, with the Home button on your left. Hold the phone between your two hands. end quote. So even this has ambiguity, if you rotate a line from top to bottom so it goes left to right; the Home key would be on the right; quoting a line from bottom to top and rotating it is a tad unusual. I prefer the Home button to the right as that puts the speaker nearer my best ear. I suppose the first time we try it, all will become clear, tap the corners until it says A! I agree with you, if it fulfills a real need for an individual, it is worth it to them. I'll have to see how it pans out in GBP mind, amazing how much stuff comes over from the us and we are charged the same in £ as you in $ which is something like a 50% ripoff. I think Apple do enough of this though they don't do the full $ to £; but neither is it anywhere near the exchange rate. Re: OtterBox Cases
Level of extra bulk and degree of protection I reckon. I have the Impact which seems a good compromise. Good rubbery case, easy to fit, don't add too much bulk, cheaper, but stil good protection; beefy padded corners is the key feature I'd say. Can get away with a sstandard speedDots protector with it too. I've had several Defenders, top of the tree, very bulky, but I don't mind that. robH. - Original Message - From: Ezzie ez...@sillyez.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, January 06, 2013 2:56 AM Subject: OtterBox Cases Hello, What are the differences between the standard Otterbox cases and the Commutter case? Re: Voice Dream Reader
Hi, I'm the developer of Voice Dream Reader. You're right: text navigation with VoiceOver on needs work. I'm thinking through this problem carefully and will have a good solution soon. For now, you can do a search in the text to find the Title, for example, and make a bookmark there. I know making a bookmark requires the imprecise long-press on the screen. It may help to know that when it navigates to a piece of text through search, the text is about one quarter down from the top of the screen. My goal is for you to do everything around long-running content with one text to speech readers. I think we'll get there soon. Best, Winston.
