Re: BeMyEyes: A ground braking product I'm a part of
I don't want to be a wet blanket, but don't such an app already exist, don't we use facetime for this already; just flick the camera or phone round and show them anything; this works already, generically. Developing specialist apps where the basic generic one already does the job perfectly, strikes me as a little pointless. This is more a Sighted mindset. I'm involved in this cool project. Read more here: Be My Eyes is a non-profit initiative that aims to equip blind with a pair of eyes which fits into your pocket. This can be done by the blind at any time, on his/her smart phone: you start an application, and can through this be put in direct video connection with a voluntary sighted person. The sighted volunteer helps you through the camera in the blind person's smart phone to see (video transmitted to the helpers smart phone) what the blind person is pointing at with the smart phone camera and can solve a given task. The task could, for example. be: Reading the date on a milk carton, see if two socks are alike, read the buttons on the washing machine, etc. It is the blind who has control over what the volunteer sees, while the volunteer can for example say a little closer or date is on the other side of the milk carton. This way the blind and the sighted volunteer help each other to solve the given task. The technical part of the project is, first, to develop an application available for the blind that can connect the users with sighted volunteers - here is so far developed a prototype. The second part is to develop a system on a server that all Be My Eyes will run on. When you create a user account on the system, you could choose whether you are the visual impaired who needs help, or if you are the sighted person who wants to help. The sighted help to be able both to use the system on an iPhone (or other smart phone platforms), an iPad tablet (or other tablet platforms) with a larger screen so it's easier to see the image and on a computer where the image is, of course, it depends on the screen connected to the computer. The idea is to build a network of volunteers who want to help. You can even sign in and out anything useful, and you can specify what time of the day or week you have time to help, where you will be notified accordingly. If technology allows, then the visually impaired also use the app over 3G and 4G, making the possibilities endless, since in this way you can use the system anywhere. This requires of course that as a visually impaired learn some techniques to use the camera properly. The advantage of video interview is that the sighted volunteer can guide one to use the camera properly, which eventually becomes better and better. The team behind Be My Eyes is a mixture of blind, partly sighted and sighted people who know the depth of the problems the project to solve. All involved have contributed on a strictly volunteer basis. The idea stems from Hans Jørgen Wiberg who himself is visually impaired. Hans Jørgen works as a visually impaired consultant in the Danish Blind Society. Here he experienced countless times to sighted assistance in a moment would have made the blind able to solve a variety of tasks on their own. When Hans tried video conferencing on his smart phone dropped the pieces in place - through a voluntary network could be in the moments when the blind was faced with tasks that required vision, get assistance via video chat on your mobile! We are looking for volunteer programmers, visually impaired as impaired. The advantage is that a visually impaired programmer familiar with the challenges of accessibility, and a sighted programmer to help with the visual. We are looking for both people who create applications for PC / Mac, iOS and server based systems. In order to implement this exciting project, we are also looking for financial help, as all in the team is working volunteer and we need some help outside the company as programmers and such, which is not cheap. I'm sure anyone can come up with hypothetical situations, but my comments relate to the most probable. If released, like many other apps, it will follow the same trajectory lots of initial buzz. waning buzz. flat lining buzz. Developer will need money, or volunteers will lose interest, or audience will disappear. audibon bird apps
The audibon owl guide was free for a day or so and I downloaded it to see if it was accessible for us. Have to say I was quite impressed and will likely buy more of their apps. The first screen wasn't readable with voiceover, it was some sort of registration with options to do it now, later or not at all. I hit the not at all button and afterwords the rest of the app seems very readable. there are buttons for natural history, bird voice a quiz and more. It's neat to be able to browse each owl and then tap the voice button and listen to it and be able to get descriptions and other details. Definitely going to look into more of the audibon apps. text adventure games on iphone
Hi all, I've found an app called frotz that allows you to play text adventure games. I have some games that I used to play when I had a brailleNote. However, Now that I have a brailleSense, those games won't work and unfortunately the frotz program for the computer is inaccessible unless I use the jaws cursor. I was just wondering if I get the frotz app, does anyone know how I would get these games onto my iphone? The games are in the z5, z8, and dat formats.Hopefully they would work on the phone. Hi: Hi: Their are people who don't have access to family or friends that can help them sometimes. However the technology already exists to do what is being proposed. The idea of using volunteers and Skype or facetime has more potential. If people are concerned with privacy and not giving away their info all they need to do is set up accounts in Skype or email that they don't care about. Hello, If you purchase the I-tunes match, how much music can you have in that folder. I would like to have access to my entire music collection, and I do not know if the cloud can hold that much. Re: Accessibility Issue With The Dominos Pizza App
Since one person thinks it is accessible and one does not, could the person or persons who use it provide a description for those who have not had success? Re: ITunes Match question
Hi, iTunes Match lets you store 25,000 tracks in addition to any that you buy from the iTunes store. If you play a track that isn't on your phone, it will stream. The other option is to choose the Download button for the track, playlist, or album you want to download, in which case the music will download to your phone. You can choose to download only over wifi or using either wifi or cellular. Use the wifi only setting if you don't want to use data to download music. Re: Google now launched for IOS.
I don't understand these posts. Which Google OS are you talking about? Both Android and ChromeOS come with built in screen readers. Re: Printers with buttons
Actually, The touch screen thing, it's sort'a a non issue. So is the airprint thing. You still have to be a careful consumer and make sure that the admin panel is accessible and there's a supported printing solution for your IPhone. Most wireless printers these days have such offerings. Buy something that looks cute on your desk, matches your office space, has the printing/scanning options you want. Re: firewall apps?
I doubt it is easy to get into an iphone from the outside. If it were, someone would be doing it by now. One could probably write a program that when installed by the user could let things in, but it has to make it through an approval process to make it into the app store. Maybe a good reason not to jail-break your device. Re: firewall apps?
Hi What if you run into a false email from a bank you know and are a little bit tired late at night after a long day and therefore don`t pay attention as you usually do? Click on a link and fill in some credentials? There is an app called Webroot Web Secure in app store. I don't know if it is possible to choose Web Secure as default web browser in IOS. So, if it is possible you may confirm and provide information about how to change default browser in IOS, thanks. It is tempting to use the iPhone for bank services online sometimes. I haven`t got their synchronation software to work at all. Neither found their Webroot SecureSync app for iPhone in the app store. So if you have time, can you do a search in app store for Webroot SecureSynch for iPhone and provide me a link to the app in app store? Webroot Web Secure i can find and install, but i can not find Secure Sync. They even have a video of how to download the app from app store! Their password integration from McAfee works fine. McAfee is a known antivirus company so Webroot maty be a serious company. They have software for both pc and mac and mobiles and ar cloud based. May be goog or bad. Re: BeMyEyes: A ground braking product I'm a part of
Hi all. Thanks for your comments so far. Well, this project doesn't seems to interest a lot of people. Yes, Facetime does work very well and I'm using it very often. But I sometimes feel like I'm disturbing my friends and family. It's not all who are able to use Facetime though. Skype won't simply work for me. I have got stuck on the call screen a lot of time, where VOiceover just got stuck on the statusbar, showing me my battery and stuff. I have had so much trouble on switching to the backside camera, so I'll say it's not worth it. The accessibility in Skype does change between the versions, so I'll not say this is a good solution. Here is a list of features we have discussed in the team, which would be nice to have in the system: Client for helpers for Windows, Mac and IOS. In this way, the helpers can choose what machine they wanna use. It's much easier to see smaller objects and text on a bigger screen. The possibility to take a picture remotely in HD quallity. In this way, the sighted person can guide the blind person to point the camera at a text, and remotely take a picture when the text is centered. I find it difficult to take a picture using the touch screen without moving the camera. When the blind person logs into the system, it should show a list of online volunteer helpers, and you can choose who you wanna call, and how many helpers who's available. When a call has ended, it should be possible to give the call points, and leave comments and feedback to help the team to get even better, so we know what works and what doesn't. We'll of course train the helpers in the team to guide using the camera so that will be easier for the blind person to use the system. Trust me, it's not all people who are able to guide someone using a camera. :) And it's not all people who even know how to use a camera! We have discussed lots of other things as well, but those are the most important things. Hi Lori, Install it on both. That way, if you have a document on your computer, you can put it in your Dropbox folder. That file will then appear in the same folder on your iPhone. I wouldn't necessarily give up on your idea. There are over 1400 people on this list, and only a handful have weighed in one way or the other. The App Store is full of similar apps, so even with Skype and Facetime, there's no reason you couldn't come up with an app that was a bit more focused or a bit easier to use and would end up being beneficial and successful. When Hans tried video conferencing on his

Simon, I got this to work earlier today by opening the app switcher and them moving page by page using a three finger horizontal swipe from left to right. Assuming you're using the phone in portrait orientation, place three fingers at the left most corner of the screen above the home button and move them toward the right side of the screen without lifting a finger from the screen. When I did this gesture, there was a progress tone like the one you hear when moving from page to page on a web page. The lock orientation button was on page two at the right most corner of the app switcher. I did have to repeat this gesture more than once in order to get the pages to move forward. RE: How to be blind episode 45
Personally, if there is absolutely no description I just delete the message, my time is valuable and unless I know what I am going for I don't have time to just pop in and see what the article is about. A brief synopsis would be most helpful so I'd know if it is something I would think spending the length of the cast worth my time. I for example would not want to her an hour long podcast on At Bat as I am not a sports fan, only thing I want to know is if the diamondbacks won and Siri will tell me that. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Lauren Simmons Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 12:49 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: How to be blind episode 45 Donald, the idea is to drive listers to the website. Re: Unlocking iPhone 4s
I unlocked my iPhone 4S last december. I needed to do that because I was traveling overseas and needed to use local sim cards with local numbers in the countries I visited. I went to an unlocking service in my area. I paid $30 for that. Unfortunately my iPhone was, and still under contract, so ATT refused to unlock it until the end of contract, which will be next october. However, after unlocking my iPhone, I Found that there are some free services online. If you do a google search for free unlocking you may be lucky. If your friend's iPhone is not in a contract, ATT will do it for free, if not, the two remaining options are unlocking service for a fee, or find one of the free online services. a way to carry an iPhone 4S
Hi, List. I like to take long walks and listen to a book as I go. Since I now have voice dream and am reading a good book on it, I have been looking for a way to carry my iPhone 4S clipped to my shirt collar so I can read as I walk. I happened to have an old victor Stream case and, just for fun, put my iPhone in it. It works very well and I can use the clip to hold it in place. My husband's iPhone 5 is, of course a little too long. If anyone has tried any other means of carrying the phone I'd be interested to know since the Stream case does not fit his iPhone 5. God bless! Re: a way to carry an iPhone 4S
Hi there. I bought an iphone lanyard off ebay for about $6.00 Australian. It has the same connector as the apple charger that slots into the base of the phone and clips in so it can't fall out. You then simply hang it around your neck. Mine is for an iPhone 4S but I am sure you would be able to get them for the 5's. My husband’s iPhone 5 is, of course a little too long. If anyone has tried any other means of carrying the phone I’d be interested to know since the Stream case does not fit his iPhone 5. God bless! Braille input apps
Hi friends, I am an avid Braille user but somehow I am not able to use any of the Braille input apps, namely, Brailletouch, TypeinBraille, Braillist or Braillepad. The most promising for me have been Braillist and Braillepad but in case of Braillist with every upgrade the app seems to get worse and Braillepad I am able to enter nothing but coma. Could anyone write the entire method of entering text using Braillepad or typeinBraille? I would be most obliged. Sorry for bothering. Thank you in anticipation. The eventual goal is to move him to an iPhone. His wife asked if there are any simple games he might play on the iPad that would help him practice his gestures and continue to learn how to review an entire screen by dragging his finger around it. If you can think of any such games, I would greatly appreciate hearing about them. Thanks. Take care, Ed Przybylek No virus found in this message. Re: Moderator Note -was- Re: searching the app store
I have blocked any frustrating messages so I will no longer be receiving them. Fred - Original Message - From: Cara Quinn modelc...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Cc: Raul Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com Sent: Sunday, April 28, 2013 2:51 AM Subject: Moderator Note -was- Re: searching the app store Hi Fred and list, First off, kudos to you, Fred for recommending Anna and Dean's book! This is great! However, several points off for style. ;) If you're going to offer assistance, please do it without the attitude. this goes for everyone. Yes, I know there are going to be repeat questions or notes you'd consider novice questions that you'd rather not read. This is fine. It's not fine to make someone feel lousy for asking them, no matter how much smarter you might decide to consider yourself than the questioner. The fact is that responses like these show the opposite. So please refrain from this sort of thing on the list. If you would rather not hear the same question again or would rather not answer such a question, then simply use your delete key and let someone else answer the question. At this point, there are many people on this list who are willing and able to answer any questions that may come up. If one person is tired of answering questions then someone else will be there to do so. This way, everyone can take a breather and all the questions get addressed. :) Please keep the list polite… Remember, people who might be lurking actually learn from reading responses. They also learn what is acceptable from the tone of these responses and the tone of the threads such responses generate. So make your responses positive. Frustration is normal. If you have issues then either write me or Raul off-list or address your concerns with the poster directly off-list as well. This list is a positive and welcoming place. Please keep it that way. Thank you all! Smiles, Cara :) On Apr 27, 2013, at 8:44 PM, Fred Olver goodfo...@charter.net wrote: Ray, may I suggest a book to you? It is called Getting started with the iPhone by Anna Dresner and Dean Martineau. It is available in several formats from the National Braille Press. I suggest this book because if you had read it before you received your phone or had it when your phone arrived, many, many, many, many of the multitude of questions which you have posed to the list in the last three weeks or so could have been answered without having to send what I figure to be somewhere near 200 messages to the list. I am not suggesting that you not ask questions, only that you give some thought to making use of a resource which is easily available to you and save the difficult questions for the list.
