Problem with Voice Dream Reader

2013-12-23 Thread Ketan Kothari
Hi friends,

I am a voice dream user. I had to change my Iphone as the earlier iphone got
into disrepair. After that, WHatever I do, I am unable to restore my purchased
voices. I tried 3/4 different ViFi networks but to no avail. The voices get
downloaded to about 40% or so and then I get message saying voice download
failed. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app but no use. Please help.

With best wishes,

Ketan

Re: Transferring contacts from a Nokia N82 to an iPhone 5s while preserving labels

2013-12-23 Thread Mario Barbuto

  Hi Brian,

ou course you must have contacts in your Nokia Symbian phone.
Select and save all of them to the phone mass storage.
Connect that storage to a Windows computer and use the Dos command:

copy *.vcf allfiles.vcf/B

Now all your contacts are collected in the single file allfiles.vcf.

Proceed as indicated in my previous message.

All the best!

Mario.

 Hi all,

A friend has recently bought an iPhone 5s. She wants to
 transfer her
contacts from her Nokia N82 to the iPhone 5s. How do we do
 this while
preserving as much of the information as is possible in the
 contacts? I had
switched last year and used outlook to transfer the
 contacts but that
mangled many labels that had been assigned.

reboots on my iPhone 5S. The first time was when I was listening to an
audiobook and the screen was locked. The audiobook abruptly stopped out of
the blue, and after 30 seconds I heard “VoiceOver on, screen curtain on” and
was back at the lock screen. Touch ID was disabled, as it normally is
whenever the phone is restarted. I went into settings, general, about,
diagnostics and usage and took a look at the diagnostic logs. I’m not privy
to the exact meaning of the logs, but it appears that I had a full kernel
panic which seems to be a term that operating systems use to indicate that an
error or problem took place, which cannot, or should not, be recovered from
 without a reboot.

Since then, I’ve had two more kernel panics (which I’ve verified by reading
the diagnostic logs). Both times, I’ve simply been lying in bed with the
phone charging and have been awoken to VoiceOver saying (VoiceOver on, screen
 curtain on).

The first time this happened I actually was within my 30 day return window,
but I called Apple and they ran remote diagnostics and said that my phone was
fine and that it had been a hardware issue. However, as I say the problem has
happened a couple of times since then. I suppose the reason for this message
is to firstly ask whether others have experienced the same issue on their
iPhone 5S, and also whether there’s a way to tell whether this is a software
or a hardware issue. I’ve discussed this issue with a few people who suggest
that maybe this is simply a software issue caused by drivers or bugs owing to
the switch to 64-BIT code. What do you guys think?

It’s only fitting with a new iOS 7 jailbreak being available that we cover
the other side of the things; why you should not jailbreak at all. We’ve
already mentioned in this jailbreaking guide that most users should not
bother using the jailbreak at all, because casual iPhone, iPad, and iPod
touch owners will probably not benefit from the result and may just run
into problems. Accordingly, we do not recommend it for most users. That’s
just our opinion though, so who better to tell you jailbreaking is a bad
 idea than Apple itself?

It should come as no surprise that Apple has never been a fan of
jailbreaking iOS for a variety of reasons. These seven (six plus one = 7)
points are directly from Apple’s Support article addressing the subject,
emphasizing problems that may be experienced which lead Apple to think
jailbreaking is a bad idea, and why you should not jailbreak any iPhone,
iPad, or iPod touch. They are:

 Security vulnerabilities
 Instability of iOS and apps
 Shortened battery life
 Unreliable voice and data
 Disruption of services
Inability to apply future software updates (iOS updates)
Apple may deny service to jailbroken devices
Those interested in the topic should read the entire knowledge base
article from Apple, citing their complete reasons for each specific
instance of potential problems encountered. We’re repeating their full
text below, quoting directly from Apple’s knowledge base article on the
 matter:

iOS is designed to be reliable and secure from the moment you turn on your
device. Built-in security features protect against malware and viruses and
help to secure access to personal information and corporate data.
Unauthorized modifications to iOS (“jailbreaking”) bypass security
features and can cause numerous issues to the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod
 touch, including:

Security vulnerabilities: Jailbreaking your device eliminates security
layers designed to protect your personal information and your iOS device.
With this security removed from your iOS device, hackers may steal your
personal information, damage your device, attack your network, or
 introduce malware, spyware or viruses.

Instability: Frequent and unexpected crashes of the device, crashes and
freezes of built-in apps and third-party apps, and loss of data.

Shortened battery life: The hacked software has caused an accelerated
battery drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod
touch on a single battery charge.

Unreliable voice and data: Dropped calls, slow or unreliable data
connections, and delayed or inaccurate location data.

Disruption of services: Services such as Visual Voicemail, Weather, and
Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device. Additionally,
third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have had
difficulty receiving notifications or received notifications that were
intended for a different hacked device. Other push-based services such as
iCloud and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with
 their respective servers.

Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized
modifications have caused damage to iOS that is not repairable. This can
result in the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becoming permanently
inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iOS update is installed.

Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks iOS. It
is also important to note that unauthorized modification of iOS is a
violation of the iOS end-user software license agreement and because of
this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has
 installed any unauthorized software.

Did you catch the 7th reason? It’s at the very end there (our emphasis
added): Apple can deny warranty service coverage or any iPad, iPhone, or
iPod touch that has an active jailbreak. This is a very important point to
make, because if you mess up the process and can’t restore the device
yourself, Apple may cite the jailbreak to not provide warranty service,
and send you on your way.

It really can’t be emphasized enough; jailbreaking is best for advanced
 users who

iOS7 Jailbreak Released

2013-12-23 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

Just a quick message to let everyone know that as of around a day ago
iOS7 is jailbreakable; it was released at very short notice and with a
healthy dose of drama as per usual.
I would suggest that people wait a few days before jailbreaking their
devices so we are able to gage the reliability of the jailbreak; this
has always been my recommendation for jailbreaks but it is more
important with this one than previous ones due to a potentially
incompatible version of Cydia. Having said this, I intend to jailbreak
an iPad running 7 later today and will report back once done.

For those of you wanting to give it a go, visit http://evasi0n.com/ to
get started.

Some frequently asked questions relating to jailbreaking and some
things to bare in mind:

1: Before applying the jailbreak make sure that you updated to iOS7
through iTunes as opposed to the over the air method.
2: Perform a backup via iTunes or iCloud just to be safe.
3: Voiceover is unaffected.
4: If something doesn't work out or if you don't like your phone being
jailbroken you can restore through iTunes to undoo it.
5: Jailbreaking does void your warranty. It is however worth baring in
mind that if your phone is still usable enough that iTunes sees it,
you can simply restore it to a non jailbroken iOS7 and Apple will not
know that you were previously jailbroken.
6: Jailbreaking brings lots of benefits; have a Google or read some of
the previous posts on this list or Applevis to get an idea of the
possibilities.

Cheers,
Ben.

Re: [IDevices] {Disarmed} FW: 7 Reasons Not to Jailbreak iOS, Courtesy of Apple

2013-12-23 Thread Mike Arrigo
My only response to that is, if Apple would remove some of their
restrictions, such as not allowing you to side load apps, and giving
you more customization such as the ability to install system wide apps
like other keyboards, there would be no need to jail break in the first place.

Apple TV distortion

I have two Apple TVs. The original one with voice over and the latest one.
The latest one I notice is a bit distorted with Voice Over. Any ideas what

OT: a minimack

Completely off topic for here. Can someone tell me what podcast on Applevis I
could listen to on a Mack that would be for a complete beginner? I see many
podcasts, but they look to complicated with things I won't need immediately as
a beginner. Thinking seriously of getting a minimack. Thanks.

Apple TV doesn't give you access to regular TV. It gives you access to

else to suggest other than to take the digital out connection out of the mix

allowing audio via the HDMI connection which is just a guess on my part.

Since getting my iPhone 5S in mid-October, I've had a total of three random
reboots on my iPhone 5S. The first time was when I was listening to an
audiobook and the screen was locked. The audiobook abruptly stopped out of
the blue, and after 30 seconds I heard VoiceOver on, screen curtain on and
was back at the lock screen. Touch ID was disabled, as it normally is
whenever the phone is restarted. I went into settings, general, about,
diagnostics and usage and took a look at the diagnostic logs. I'm not privy
to the exact meaning of the logs, but it appears that I had a full kernel
panic which seems to be a term that operating systems use to indicate that
an error or problem took place, which cannot, or should not, be recovered
from without a reboot.

Since then, I've had two more kernel panics (which I've verified by reading
the diagnostic logs). Both times, I've simply been lying in bed with the
phone charging and have been awoken to VoiceOver saying (VoiceOver on,
screen curtain on).

The first time this happened I actually was within my 30 day return window,
but I called Apple and they ran remote diagnostics and said that my phone
was fine and that it had been a hardware issue. However, as I say the
problem has happened a couple of times since then. I suppose the reason for
this message is to firstly ask whether others have experienced the same
issue on their iPhone 5S, and also whether there's a way to tell whether
this is a software or a hardware issue. I've discussed this issue with a few
people who suggest that maybe this is simply a software issue caused by
drivers or bugs owing to the switch to 64-BIT code. What do you guys think?

RE: Making ringtones on my iPhone from music

2013-12-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There is no other way unless you use Garageband, Apple's app, which
apparently allows you to make Ringtones on the phone and use them on the
phone without going through iTunes. I have not yet tried this because I find
it easiest to just use iTunes to make my ringtone and then sync it to the
phone. I have posted my instructions at least 4 or 5 times so if you search
in the archives for ringtones in iTunes you should find these
instructions, I only posted them the last time maybe 3 or 4 weeks ago.

I use RMaker Pro -- it was about $2 I believe. The th ing is, I send the
finished ring tone from my iPhone to my PC where it gets stored in my iTunes

folders for download back onto my iPhone when I sync. There's probably a
more efficient way to do this, but I'm comfortable with this method.

I have Navigon and Sendero GPS Lookaround; should I purchase Blindsquare?

2013-12-23 Thread Gmail
I will admit, the price is putting me off a little. I think if I did buy it,
I'd wait until it went on sale. Either that, or I got an iTunes gift card. :)

I've seen quite a few discussions of Blindsquare on this list, and I have some
questions.
1. Can I mark my own points of interest with this app? I'm pretty sure I can,
but wanted to make sure. I'd be marking things like bus stops and maybe some
landmarks. I'm moving to a new area that I don't know at all, which is why I'm
asking this.
2. If I can mark points of interest, do I have to do this as audio recordings,
or can I just use the keyboard to make a text label that either the Acappella
voice or VoiceOver will read?
3. I was reading the help file posted on Blindsquare's website, and it said
something about me needing to put my phone in my pocket with the screen facing
backwards. Is this strictly speaking necessary? Can I do this with the OtterBox
Defender case and Belt clip?
4. I plan to use this app, if I get it, in conjunction with Navigon. Won't I
need to see the screen for Navigon sometimes? The screen facing backwards thing
is something I've never come across before, and it's never posed an issue with
Navigon or Sendero GPS Lookaround.
5. I heard about the iControlPad, and that it can be used to control
Blindsquare. Have any of you used this device? If so, did you like it? Was it
easy to operate?
6. Why might I want blind Square if I already have Sendero GPS Lookaround,
other than the ability to mark my own points of interest?
7. How often would you say the app goes on sale, and what tends to be the usual
sale price? I would be buying this from the U.S. App Store.
8. Does the app come with the ability to get other voices, besides those from
Acappella, like the Voice Dream Reader app does?

I think that's all my questions for now.

Thanks,
Ari

 Reasons Not To Jailbreak

It’s only fitting with a new iOS 7 jailbreak being available
 http://osxdaily.com/2013/12/22/ios-7-jailbreak-evasi0n-7-download-links/
that we cover the other side of the things; why you should not jailbreak at
all. We’ve already mentioned in this jailbreaking guide
 http://osxdaily.com/2013/12/22/jailbreak-iphone-ipad-ios-7-evasi0n/ that
most users should not bother using the jailbreak at all, because casual
iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners will probably not benefit from the
result and may just run into problems. Accordingly, we do not recommend it
for most users. That’s just our opinion though, so who better to tell you
jailbreaking is a bad idea than Apple itself?

It should come as no surprise that Apple has never been a fan of
jailbreaking iOS for a variety of reasons. These seven (six plus one = 7)
points are directly from Apple’s Support article addressing the subject,
emphasizing problems that may be experienced which lead Apple to think
jailbreaking is a bad idea, and why you should not jailbreak any iPhone,
iPad, or iPod touch. They are:

  1. Security vulnerabilities

  1. Instability of iOS and apps

  1. Shortened battery life

  1. Unreliable voice and data

  1. Disruption of services

  1. Inability to apply future software updates (iOS updates)

  1. Apple may deny service to jailbroken devices

Those interested in the topic should read the entire knowledge base article
from Apple, citing their complete reasons for each specific instance of
potential problems encountered. We’re repeating their full text below,
quoting directly from Apple’s knowledge base article
 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743 on the matter:

iOS is designed to be reliable and secure from the moment you turn on your
device. Built-in security features protect against malware and viruses and
help to secure access to personal information and corporate data.
Unauthorized modifications to iOS (“jailbreaking”) bypass security features
and can cause numerous issues to the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch,
 including:

Security vulnerabilities: Jailbreaking your device eliminates security
layers designed to protect your personal information and your iOS device.
With this security removed from your iOS device, hackers may steal your
personal information, damage your device, attack your network, or introduce
 malware, spyware or viruses.

Instability: Frequent and unexpected crashes of the device, crashes and
freezes of built-in apps and third-party apps, and loss of data.

Shortened battery life: The hacked software has caused an accelerated
battery drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
 on a single battery charge.

Other push-based services such as
iCloud and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with their
 respective servers.

Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications
have caused damage to iOS that is not repairable. This can result in the
hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a

Larry,

In that case I suggest you give Apple support a call. I have my Apple TV
plugged into my HT receiver via HDMI. In fact I have several other
components connected to the receiver via HDMI. I only have 1 HDMI cable
going from the HDMI out port on my receiver to the HDMI 1 port on my TV.
There is no digital out cable used at all and VO has no lag whatsoever.
I honestly don't know what else to suggest other than to take the
digital out connection out of the mix completely which could very
possibly be confusing the Apple TV into not allowing audio via the HDMI
connection which is just a guess on my part.

Voiceover is very sluggish when coming through the hometheater system.
There is no sluggishness when coming through the television speakers. I
have an HDMI connection on the hometheater system which I also tried
running the apple TV through. The icons was visible on the television

RE: [IDevices] {Disarmed} FW: 7 Reasons Not to Jailbreak iOS, Courtesy of Apple

2013-12-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mike,

Pointing out potential issues to a group of people where not everybody is as
knowledgeable as yourself is not scare tactics. The fact is that for most
users the iPhone as it is works great and is as good as it gets when it
comes to a smartphone. This even applies to the general public and not just
the visually impaired community. It is simply wrong to say that jailbreaking
does not potentially cause problems in the areas pointed out in the article.
The bigger problem, however, is that in some cases people who just don't
have the technical expertise may attempt a jailbreak and mess up their
iPhone or even if the jailbreak goes well they then may install apps which
may cause issues and then don't understand how to trouble shoot.

Apple is slowly addressing areas which gave people the reason to jailbreak,
but it is also well known hat Apple is not a company who will make iOS as
open as Android. For many including myself this control over their hardware
and software is what attracts me to the iOS platform. To me it is logical
that accessibility on iOS devices is as good as it is because of this tight
control and while Android accessibility has become much better I don't see
it catching up any time soon.
Jailbreaking is great for people who have time and like to fiddle around,
but for people who just want a secure, feature rich,, well-functioning and
stabil mobile device I just don't see the point.
I consider myself to know my way around technology reasonably well and feel
I could definitely accomplish a jailbreak, I just don't feel a need for it.
I honestly don't care whether I can copy music to my iPhone using Windows
Explorer or whether I fire up iTunes, put a checkbox beside a bunch of
artists or albums and then select the Apply button.

I am not at all trying to say there is no place for jailbreaking, but I also
think pointing out the risks involved is important so people understand that
it may cause problems. To me this is similar to pointing out the risks
involved in installing Beta software, it's mostly safe, but it's not quite
the same smooth and polished experience as a final version may offer.

Regards,
Sieghard

iOS is designed to be reliable and secure from the moment you turn on your

Shortened battery life: The hacked software has caused an accelerated battery
drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on a single

Unreliable voice and data: Dropped calls, slow or unreliable data connections,
and delayed or inaccurate location data.

Disruption of services: Services such as Visual Voicemail, Weather, and Stocks

RE: Digest mode

2013-12-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Tess,

Since Christopher has challenged me, I better do as he says and beat him to
it.
I used Christopher's link which is also at the bottom of each post,
http://groups.google.com/group/viphone?hl=en.
I then used the Jaws virtual find command Jaws Key+Control+F to look for the
sign in link.
I am, by the way, using Windows 7 with Internet Explorer and Jaws 15
although this always worked with Jaws 14 as well.
First you will have to sign in with your Google credentials unless you
previously set it to remember your information and you are already signed
in.
Now press the quick nav key for buttons, b in Jaws and most other screen
readers.
Find the button called My Settings, if I start at the top of the web page,
it's about 5 or 6 buttons down the page.
Press spacebar or enter, a menu opens, select the option My Membership and
email settings for this group.
Press the spacebar or enter, at the bottom of the page an area with setting
loads.
the one you want, if you are subscribed to receiving individual messages,
should be another button saying Send me an email for every new message
(about 72 per day)
Press spacebar or enter on it and then arrow down until you find Send me
daily summaries, select it and don't forget to find the Save button at the
bottom.

It's fairly straight forward and I hope it will work for you.

Merry Christmas,
Sieghard

Can someone duplicate this on the App Store?

2013-12-23 Thread Bill Holton
I am trying to find an app called shadow trader. When I enter the two words
together, I get this.
There are no results for “==shadowtraders online daytrading seminar, webinar

This is a lot more information that I entered, so I'm guessing the app is
somewhere there. Does this message mean that the app has been pulled or

Thanks.

2013-12-23 Thread Donna
When I enter shadowtrader, written together, I'm just told that there no
results for shadowtrader. I also did a search as two seperate words, shadow
trader, and only one result was returned. The title of the app sounded like it
was a game of sorts. I live in the US so don't know if this why our searches
returned two different results when shadowtrader was entered as one word.

Hi,

I love Jazz and recently discovered that one of my favorite Jazz radio programs
has a live stream through Stanford University. I do not use Adobe flash on my
Mac and this stream would not play on the Mac. The stream plays great, however,
on my iPad.

For anyone who cares, the show is called River Walk Jazz.

new Radium App which allows access to XM content is wonderful. And I'm
really impressed with the battery life. Last Sunday, I had charged our unit
in the morning. My wife used it for a while before I took it over for the
afternoon football games. I'm guessing when I started using it, the battery
level may have been at around 98%. I had the unit running non-stop for 4
hours, I made no adjustments in settings to conserve battery life, VO was
running. I checked the battery after 4 hours of continuous use, and it was
at 88%. As it ran down about 2 to 3% per hour,I'd say this is really
outstanding. The unit was in a locked state, so perhaps that helped.

 any advantage.

Last year, my employer purchased the iPad 3 for everyone in my department
who wanted one. I got one and gradually installed some of my favorite apps.
I discovered that I really enjoyed working with email and safari on the
larger screen. In mail, for example, all of the mailboxes are listed along
the left side of the screen. You can simply run your finger down the mailbox
column and double-tap on the mailbox that you want to open. Of course, I can
work fine with email on my iPhone but this layout on the iPad is nice for
 both sighted and blind users.

I also found that listening to audio on the ipad's built-in speakers was
nicer than the iPhone's speaker. Again, I can hear audio just fine on the
iPhone but given a choice of listening to a book or sports broadcast on
either, I would choose the iPad.

Also, it is really nice to have two iOS devices so that when the battery
runs low on one, you can grab the other device and keep on working.

I ended up liking the iPad enough that when the new much faster and thinner
iPad Air came out, I gave the iPad 3 back to my department and purchased the
 iPad Air.

I do agree that having both an iPhone and an iPad is a luxury. If I could
only afford one, I would choose the iPhone. Having them both is certainly
the best of all for me.

Personally, I don't think the iPad offers anything the iPhone does not in
terms of apps. It has a better battery life, and some people prefer the
interface that some apps (like Mailor Safari) offer, but that's it. Oh, if
you use Mbraille, you can type with your fingers straight across the

Low vision users often like the larger screen for viewing magnified images

Re: [IDevices] {Disarmed} FW: 7 Reasons Not to Jailbreak iOS, Courtesy of Apple

2013-12-23 Thread Mike Arrigo
I would say that android accessibility has caught up. It works a bit
differently than IOS, but to say that it's not as good is incorrect.

Original message:

Regards,
Sieghard

I agree. This list just seems like scare tactics to me. All of these issues
are easily circumvented.
I have spent plenty of time jailbroken and I'm jailbroken and I don't see
really any validity in these points. It all depends on what you do with it
and how you use it.
i for one, cannot wait to jailbreak my devices! It feels like I've been
waiting forever for this!

Reasons Not To Jailbreak

It's only fitting with a new iOS 7 jailbreak being available

http://osxdaily.com/2013/12/22/ios-7-jailbreak-evasi0n-7-download-links/
that we cover the other side of the things; why you should not jailbreak at
all. We've already mentioned in this jailbreaking guide
http://osxdaily.com/2013/12/22/jailbreak-iphone-ipad-ios-7-evasi0n/ that
most users should not bother using the jailbreak at all, because casual
iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners will probably not benefit from the
result and may just run into problems. Accordingly, we do not recommend it
for most users. That's just our opinion though, so who better to tell you
jailbreaking is a bad idea than Apple itself?

It should come as no surprise that Apple has never been a fan of

jailbreaking iOS for a variety of reasons. These seven (six plus one = 7)
points are directly from Apple's Support article addressing the subject,
emphasizing problems that may be experienced which lead Apple to think
jailbreaking is a bad idea, and why you should not jailbreak any iPhone,

Keyboard

2013-12-23 Thread solaunmarissa2007
Hello list

I have an IPhone 4S updated to iOS 7 and it's out of warranty. Recently I have
noticed that the keyboard is messed up especially when texting or entering
information in safari such as password ect. I type the letter G for example and
sometimes it will pop up on the screen sometimes not. Or for instance if I put
a number as part of the text I press the number 1 it duplicates the # or it
sometimes does/does not input the number on the screen. It happens with or
without VoiceOver.

The phone got a slight chip on it from falling not too far but, this issue with
the keyboard had happened long before the fall

 Author: Paul Horowitz
Subject: Find Kids Apps in the iOS App Store the Easy Way with Age Sorting

Apple has created individual sections of the App Store for kids, which makes
finding age appropriate apps for children much easier than it was before.
With a few adjustments, you can basically create a kids-only App Store,
perfectly suited for children aged 11 and under, but also conveniently broken
into different age groups if you’re looking to narrow down to more age
appropriate choices. This is different from the general age restrictions that
can be set for the App Store, and aims to provide an easy way to browse
through the huge amount of kids apps available to iOS.

The two tricks we’ll focus on below usually feature the highest quality apps
chosen by Apple in the Features section, and also show you waht’s most
popular as determined by other user downloads and purchases.

Access the Kids Apps Sections of the App Store

This applies to the App Store in iOS on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

Open App Store and go to the default “Featured” page
Tap on “Categories” in the upper left corner
Choose “Kids” and select one of the following age range:
All Kids (shows all apps aimed at kids in all age ranges)
 Kids 5 Under
 Kids 6-8
 Kids 9-11
Enjoy the presorted all kid-friendly apps selection

The Featured Kids apps section is usually great, having apps that have been
selected and filtered by Apple’s App Store moderators to show high quality
engaging apps for the appropriate age ranges.

It can also be helpful to check out the top apps for kids though, and that’s
 what we’ll cover next.

View the Top Free Paid Apps for Kids by Age Range

Open the App Store and tap on “Top Charts” at the bottom
 Tap “Categories” in the corner
Choose “Kids” and select the age range you want to narrow down the top charts
 for

The Paid and Free sections are worthwhile and have lots of great apps which
can be great for kids of all ages. Meanwhile, the “Top Grossing” section
sometimes has a few good ones, but overall is pretty useless for sorting apps
of any kind, it’s usually just a list of apps with tons of required in-app
purchases. Frankly, I’m not quite sure why Apple bothers to show ‘Top
Grossing’ anywhere in the App Store other than to demonstrate to developers
what (annoying) app model works to create a cash cow… but I digress.

You’ll notice that entering into the “Kids” section of the App Store is
pretty easy to leave, entering into the broader range of apps for all age
ranges. If you’d like to restrict the App Store for a certain age range, use
the Restrictions settings as Parental Controls to lock down what apps and
media can be used on the device, where you are able to set specifics about
what type of material can be downloaded onto the iOS device.

Quick side note: parents and adults should remember to disable in-app
purchases (IAP) in iOS Settings before giving any iPhone/iPad/iPod to any
child, even if you only plan on downloading ‘free’ apps for the kid(s). You
can always go through and change it if necessary, but disabling it ahead of
time can prevent huge charges from being accidentally racked up by the little
ones. Even if the kid has an iTunes Allowance configured for use, it is still
recommended to turn off IAP because some developers are borderline predatory
in how they lure and disguise the purchases. Our advice; don’t take the
chance until you know for sure, just disable the purchases and avoid any
 headaches.

Heads up to CultOfMac for the reminder about this, don’t forget you can use
the same sorting on the desktop with iTunes and the Mac App Store too!

RE: Reading who likes Facebook statuses--help

2013-12-23 Thread Melissa
Hi Beth. Were you able to see the likes via the notifications tab?
I have been able to view them this way. However, I am having other
difficulties, specifically when attempting to view things my friends have
shared or commented on. I'll hear something like, Joe shared a link, but
what Joe shared, or commented on, is not read. I'd love to circumnavigate
these issues, and would gratefully appreciate any advice or corrections
regarding what I should be doing?
Many warm and appreciative thanks,

RE: Gift card

2013-12-23 Thread Alan Lemly
Brian, I'm running iOS 6.1.4 so I'm not sure if the below will work the same
in iOS 7 but here's what I do:

1. Open the Featured tab in the Apps Store.
2. The screen presents a swarm of icons for the various featured items which
are grouped by heading. If you have the rotor set to headings, you can
single finger swipe up and down to move among the headings.
3. I find the easiest way to get to a button or control at the bottom of a
multi-screen page is to put my finger on the leftmost button on the bottom
row which is the selected Featured button in this case. When you swipe left
once from this position, you will be moved to the last control on the page.
4. The control you get to after that first swipe left is Terms and
Conditions. The second swipe left takes you to your Apple ID. The third
swipe left is Send Gift. The fourth swipe left is the Redeem control you
seek.

Good luck.

The easiest way I've found to find that button is to highlight the featured

that way.

simply an app crash. But in my case, these have been full system reboots.

Since getting my iPhone 5S in mid-October, I've had a total of three
random reboots on my iPhone 5S. The first time was when I was listening to
an audiobook and the screen was locked. The audiobook abruptly stopped out
of the blue, and after 30 seconds I heard VoiceOver on, screen curtain on
and was back at the lock screen.

Since then, I've had two more kernel panics (which I've verified by
reading the diagnostic logs). Both times, I've simply been lying in bed with
the phone charging and have been awoken to VoiceOver saying (VoiceOver on,
screen curtain on).

The first time this happened I actually was within my 30 day return
window, but I called Apple and they ran remote diagnostics and said that my
phone was fine and that it had been a hardware issue.

RE: Facebook Messenger

2013-12-23 Thread Jerry Mader
Yes but there is a small bug with it.
I've reported it tons of times to Facebook but they're not getting the
message or something lol.

This was tested using voice over in IOS 7.4, with an IPhone 4 s.
When you use, record voice in the attach media tab, everything works well
until you record your message via pressing and holding on the record button.
Voice over will freeze up on you after you let off the record button.
You then have to go and hold the home button down to activate siri, which
brings back voice over for a minute, then you hurry up and hit the wake
sleep. Then unlock it and pressing home 2 times bring up the app switcher
and completely close messenger.
Then you have to reopen messenger to get it to stop sticking.
It --doesn't record once you let off, but what happens I think is when
Facebook messenger uses your Microphone, what will happen is it will mute
your voice over so that it's not clicking or talking while you are trying to
record a clip, but then it freezes and stays that way until you do the work
around I figured out on my IPhone 4S.
If anyone else has this issue I would recommend letting Facebook know about
it as well, so it can be fixed in the next release.
Thanks
Jerry Mader

RE: Gift card

2013-12-23 Thread Dani L Pagador
Hi, Alan.

Thanks for sending these steps. I was just going to ask how to purchase gift
cards from the app store, but luckily looked at my mail first and found your
instructions. :)

Sill go try them out, and will ask if anything isn't clear.

More Later,
Dani

The fourth swipe left is the Redeem control you
seek.

Good luck.

The easiest way I've found to find that button is to highlight the featured
tab, and then swipe left a few times. You'll get to it very easily doing it
that way.

Thanks,
Ari
