Blocking a number that's not in your contacts
Hi Listers, Is there a way of blocking a number that you don't first wish to add to your contacts? I know I can block a number that's already in my contacts list but what about if you get an advertising call, and you obviously don't wish to have their number in your contacts but you want to block it? Is there a way to accomplish it? Or is there a way of manually entering a number somewhere to be blocked? Re: audio players recommendations?
One slight corection: in iOS 7, you now have to go to the more tab to find the albums list. That through me for a bit, until I figured it out on accident. Billy, As Chris already pointed out, the Music app that comes with iOS will play the entire album. You can view your music by Playlists, Artists, Songs, Albums and there is also a More tab on the right where you have options like Genres, Compellations, Composers and, if you have Audio Book synced to your phone you have an Audio Book option here, too. If you select albums, you see a listing of all your albums in alphabetical order. At the top left is a Store button which takes you to the iTunes Store. At the top right is the Now Playing button which takes you to the Now Playing screen where the album art is displayed. If you go there at the top right is a Track List button which shows you all the tracks of the album that you are currently playing. You have your play progress indicator which shows the length of the song and your current position, this is a slider and you can flick up and down to go forward or back by approx 10% jumps relative to the length of the song. For example, if a song is 4 minutes long (240 seconds) flicking up or down will move forward or back by about 24 seconds. At the bottom right above the home key is your volume slider, above that are Play in the middle, Previous on the left and Next on the right. To the right of the volume slider is a Repeat button which, if you toggle it on will repeat the currently playing song. Flick right on more time and you find a Shuffle All button at the very bottom right which shuffles your entire music collection and plays it randomly. OK, now back to the album list. If you swipe right from the Now Playing button, You are on a search field. You can double tap and enter the name of an album or part of a name and the list of results is displayed. If, for example, you enter Greatest you will see only all your albums which are Greatest Hits albums. Swipe right one more time and you are on the table index which you can also get to by touching the very right edge of the touch screen. Here you can flick down to go down the alphabet, so if, for example, you were looking for the album Lover Over Gold from Dire Straits, you could quickly flick down to L and now all the albums which start with L are displayed. You can also double tap and hold, then drag your finger down the table index and very quickly get to the lower letters of the alphabet. Of course this table index is present in many apps where you have large lists, like Contacts. Flick right one more time and you are on A, the first letter of the alphabet and this is a heading. If you continue to flick right you get the first album which starts with A, in my case this is Abbey Road by the Beatles. Note that A is a heading. This means you could also turn your rotor to headings and flick down to get to b, c, D etc. Let's assume I want to list to Abbey Road. I just double tap on it and the album opens. The album name is now displayed as a heading across the top. On the very top right is once again your Now Playing button which quickly takes you back to your Now Playing screen. Flight right and you are on a search box, here you could search for a song although since most albums contain only 10 or 12 songs I find it just as easy to drag my finger down the screen over the list of tracks/songs and find it that way. Flick right one more time and you are on the album art
Re: Question for a friend. What apps would you recommend for a student using iPad?
I can't remember what the app is called, but a talking scientific calculator was posted to AppleVis. The app looked quite useful. I would add a few to the list. List Recorder is great for organizing recordings or brief written notes. It is one of my most used apps at work and home. I would have loved it as a student. It can serve in many ways from a to do list to recording entire classes. It can also be used if the student needs to do a presentation and needs talking points. It is great for studying languages as you can keep lists of words to study. The uses go on and on. Pear notes lets a student record something such as a class or meeting and also take written notes. The recording and the notes match up so the student can hear again the parts of the class that their notes don't cover adequately. Again I would have loved this as a student! iBooks can be used to read PDFs pretty well. And some text books are becoming available on it. In addition to book share the student could use the BARD mobile app to find many books for English and other classes. This assumes it is a US student. Depending on math needs I'd look into calculator options to have ready to go. If the student is planning on doing lots of in class note taking they might want a bluetooth keyboard, and to work quietly a bluetooth ear piece. Depending on the class other apps will be very helpful. Apps to read current news for example. Let me know if I can be of additional help. It seems to work for her. Now, can you guys suggest anything? Please? Here are the following we are having troubles in helping her. We can not find a cheap reliable scanning solutions for her iPad. No there is a blocked feature in iOS 7. So what you do is go to the recents tab in the phone app, double tap more info next to the number, then double tap the block contact button. From then on they can't call, message or FaceTime call you. Re: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts
I just checked this out and it is possible. Go to your recent call list. Each number is listed twice. The second of each pair is for More Info. One of the choices is Block this Caller. When you choose that it gives you the choice of Block this Contact or Cancel. I chose Block this contact even though the number was not in my contacts. When I went back to the More Info for the blocked number in the Recent call list, one of the choices is now Unblock this Caller. The blocked number is not in my contact list. I am not sure how to find it later if I wanted to unblock it. But since the number I used as a test is American Express according to Google I don't want it unblocked anyway. UnBlocking a number that's not in your contacts - Was: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts
Of course, the colliery to the initial question is: if you can block a number that isn't in your Contacts, then how could you unblock if you have a change of heart and wish to permit that number to call. I imagine that if the caller using that number were to leave a voice mail you could recover the number in that fashion. After all, the Block Caller doesn't truly prevent the call from getting to your service, only routes it directly to voice mail where it will be listed in the Blocked Callers list. But if the number never leaves a voice mail, then what? Blocking Yourself - Was: Blocking a number that's not in your contacts
OK, here's a slightly unusual twist: is it possible to block a number so that you cannot call it while keeping it in your Contacts? Re: Question for a friend. What apps would you recommend for a student using iPad?
Great suggestions from Eric and others. I would add a braille display to the list of suggestions if she's a proficient braille user. This will let her do all of her reading and writing without having an earphone or earbud. Our ears need to be listening to the class, not Voiceover. Sighted students are writing and reading their notes and listening to the teacher and everybody asking questions and commenting, a blind student needs to be writing, and reading notes tactually and also listening to the teacher and classmates. Ears out in the real world no audio division or distractions. Best to all, Ron Miller On Jan 29, 2014, at 10:30 PM, Eric Caron ecar...@comcast.net wrote: Hi Nimit, I'm a High School Guidance Counselor in VT. I think these suggestions are right on. Re: Creating folders on an IPhone4S
You'll be lucky. I've been searching how to do this for over a week without success. The iPhone doesn't work like Windows with a simple folder tree, and its contents are invisible to Windows Explorer. There are a million million people telling you to flop one App onto another - but that only works to store multiple Apps in one folder - NOT FILES, which is what we, and thousands and thousands of others want. Apple really screwed up with this. I've tried a few Apps, and none has worked - I've never yet created a FOLDER that showed up in Windows Explorer. I was given this iPhone 4S, and I'm thinking of giving it back. It's useless. Even my very very old Sony Ericsson lets me create Folders and store text files within viewable in Windows Explorer. There are many people out there who hate Bill Gates, but no one more than Steve Jobs it seems. He has made a potentially excellent device useless just to nyah nyah Microsoft. Stupid, thumb sucking, moronic, jealous, idiot of a shadow of a man. Steve, GROW UP! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Syncing phone calendar to Brallenote apex question
Hi Just to add to what Alex has said, the only way it can be done is to use windows, keysync and outlook as there is no other way to do it. Sync phone with outlook, sync Apex with outlook. Honestly, it's not worthit unfortunately. Happy to chat to you about it off list. You *might* be able to get it working through a combination of Keysync and iCloud syncing, but you'd need a computer to act as an intermediary and nothing would be automatic. Personally, considering the portability of my iPhone and how much more often it is with me compared to my Braillenote, I just use the iPhone's calendar for everything. It automatically syncs with the Mac's calendar or Outlook, and I can tell Siri to manage appointments if I want to. Re: favorite voice for voiceover
Hello Kate, for me I am finding that I prefer the UK Daniel voice. I am trying the other english voices but I always keep on coming back to him. The plus with this is that I can use him on the mac too. I should point out that I am hearing in pared as well as being blind. So what I hear may be different to you. Personally, I'd rather use a certain voice that Apple unfortunately doesn't have. I won't mention it's name in case I get taken off the list or something or people are fed up of hearing it but that's just me. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal taste and what works for you. Talking of which, I am curious which voice do you prefer too? I'd be interested to know if you can understand all the voices or if there are certain ones that you like better than others? They go for me in this particular order. English being my only language. Daniel UK Tessa South Africa Samantha US Karen and Finally Moira. I hope this helps and no its not a random question. Flick right one more time and you are on the album art which Voiceover says is an image. Another flick right and you once again hear the album title as a heading. Flick right and Voiceover tells me there are 12 tracks in this album. Another flick right and Voiceover tells me the year thealbum was recorded, in this case it is 1969. Another flick right and you are on a Shuffle button. If you double tap this only the songs from this album are shuffled. Now another flick right will put you on the first song of the album. If you double tap that song will play and when it is finished the second song will play and it will continue to play the entire album in order unless you pressed Shuffle. Of course as soon as you double tap on Shuffle or the first song the Now Playing screen will open with the playback controls. If you did press Shuffle and you now check at the very bottom right of the Now Playing screen, you will find that Voiceover tells you that Shuffle All is selected. If you double tap the Artists tab you will see an alphabetical list of

Re: info on iPad mini
Hi, I personally feel that the answer depends on how much you want to spend and what your current phone plan is. For example, I use ATT here in the US, and I have the mobile data sharing plan. Yes, I could get a cellular iPad model and add it to my account for $15 or $20 per month more, or I could just use my wi-fi model and when I need to use it on the net while out and about, simply enable the mobile hotspot feature of my iPhone and connect my iPad to the net via the iPhone. It doesn't cost extra to do this and is perfectly allowed when you have this kind of plan. Hope this helps. -- Raul A. Re: most human english voice
Hi, while I've seen many others chime here about the voice preference, ultimately it will be up to you. What I think sounds cool might not be what someone else thinks sounds cool or human. For example, I'm perfectly fine with the high quality Samantha voice, yet can't stand the low quality one which makes her sound like she's got cotton mouth or like she's about to stab someone. Others have said that Karen sounds good, and that's true, but only if you like the accent and the inflection. I'm not saying it's good or bad, but you just have to try them out for yourself and see what fits your tastes best. Good luck. -- Raul A. Gallegos Oxygen and Potassium went on a date. It went OK. Hi, I personally think the vip feature of the iPhone mail is poorly designed and isn't worth much excepting putting mails from specific contacts in it. Perhaps this is all it's meant to do and if that's the case, then I guess it's fine. now, on to answer your question. There are several apps you can use to accomplish this. However most apps will require you to forward all your mail to a third party service and some people don't feel right about that. If you trust the developer and you really want this functionality, then go for it. Boxcar2 is one such service and so is Mailtones. Boxcar is free and Mailtones costs around $6. I used to use Boxcar quite a bit, since back in 2009 and 2010, and it's grown over time. It's a service which allows you to get push notifications for just about anything. mail, Twitter, Facebook, Google Voice, ETC. I don't honestly know if you can set up filters based on the subject, so you might have to experiment. Mailtones however can definitely do this. I have all my mail forwarding to the service and I have the default mail tone set to nothing and ignore. Otherwise I would constantly be notified of new emails, especially from this list smile. In any case I have it set to play a sound when I get emails from my clients, from my bank, from specific people, and some of those are also based on subject. So, it's highly configurable and has around 40 or 50 sounds to choose from. The developers of these types of apps say they only store the headers of the message for processing and after that they erase the mail. Hopefully this is true. However since I already have my mail in the cloud on Google since that's who I use, and since the FBI and NSA already has access to my mail, I don't really care if a third-party has it as well. if they have that kind of time on their hands, then so be it. So, I just don't worry about it. Mailtones is the app I would recommend first, but as I said, it's not free. Take care and hope this helps. -- Raul A. Latest voice dream reader update problems
Hi, Previously I had no problems listening to books with voice dream with my headphones and controlling the pause and play via the button on the headphones. Unfortunately, after the most recent update, I now find that I have to press that button three times before the book stops playing. Of course as soon as you double tap on Shuffle or the first song the Now Playing

Re: google search ios 7
I just installed Google Search last weekend, after having heard my friends with Android phones get it to do things searie just wouldn't do, such as find addresses and phone numbers for local businesses on the very first asking. I also had listened to an AppleVizpodcast about Google Search which impressed me. I think Google Search is a great complement to Searie. It is one of those cases that if one won't do what you are wanting it to do, maybe the other one will. Re: skiping on webpages
If you are reading by using right flicks, VO appears to have a tracking problem in Safari. VO does not bring the visual information along with the reading on more complex websites. Perform a two-finger flick down and VO will properly read the webpage. As for activating objects, you may need to use three-finger vertical and horizontal flicks to get the object you wish to activate onto the visible page. Then, find the objects actual location on the display with one finger. Once found, leaving your finger on the object holds VO focus on it. Perform a split-tap by touching the display with another finger to activate the object. RE: Vizwiz Contact info from the website
Hi Julie, Here is the app store link for VizWiz and it contains answers to your questions: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vizwiz/id439686043?mt=8 Just for your information, it's really easyto look up an app either on your iPhone or on the computer. Of course on the phone you wold just open the app store, tab on the Search tab (second from the right across the bottom) and then type the app name in the search box at the top of the screen. Make sure you press Search at the bottom right of the on-screen keyboard because that will pull up results which may not be in the list of instant search results which is displayed as you type in the app name. On the computer all you have to do is open Google and type Vizwiz on iTunes. Of course you can replace VizWiz with any other app name you want to look up. Now use 2, the shortcut for heading level 2, to jump to the search results. The first time you usually land on a heading which would look like this: Ad related to vizwiz on itunes Of course VizWiz would be replaced by whatever it is you searched for. This is an ad result and just a generic ad/link to the Apple App Store. Type 2 again and you come to the second Heading of Level 2 Search Results. Now switch to 3 as all actual search results are of Heading Level 3 type and you can just jump through them by repeatedly pressing 3. Typically the very first result is a link which takes you straight to the app page. Here is what that looks like and also what some of the other search results are, this is copied straight from the Google search results: 1. VizWiz on the App Store on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/vizwiz/id439686043?mt=8 Sep 29, 2013 - ... ratings, see screenshots, and learn more about VizWiz on the App Store. Download VizWiz and enjoy it on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. 2. VizWiz now available in iTunes store | Media Access Australia 3. VizWiz App Answers Blind Users' Spoken Questions on What's ... 4. VizWiz - App of the Month, August 2011 - TechKnowMore blog - RNIB Once you activate the iTunes link from the first search result and the app store page opens you can once again use 1 for headling level 1 to junp straight to the app and then use the down arrow to read the description, when it was last updated, what was new in the update and further down the cost. RE: Creating folders on an IPhone4S
Well said, David, and just for Hartismere’s information, I think Steve may have a hard time growing up unless he can rise from the grave. I also wonder which of the completely inaccessible Windows Phones he is planning to get to replace his completely accessible iPhone 4S and if Apple had really screwed this up so badly why is the iPhone the singlemost popular smartphone out there? He or she could of course just use Dropbox to put all the text files, PDF’s and so on in folders on the computer to then access those same folders on the iPhone. Re: info on iPad mini
Hi Scott, I just went through this debate a couple of weeks ago. I almost went with the cellular iPad Mini, but as others pointed out I have my iPhone 5s. The iPad Mini would have added $14.99 per month to my ATT bill. I purchased the wi fi only, 64 gb. Ipad Mini and am very happy with my choice. For one thing, I will be using the iPad mostly at home. Also, when I got my 5s I decided to keep my iphone 4 as a backup, in the event something happens to the 5s. So, it really depends on what you think you will do with the iPad Mini. Oh, and, I am very pleased with my Mini. Let's assume I want to list to

RE: Vizwiz Contact info from the website
Hi Eileen, Which phone do you have? I tried VizWiz last week on my 5S and it could not understand/record my question. I tried it several times and each time the app told me I had not recorded a question. I have given the app access to the microphone and I wonder if maybe this only effects the 5S with the 64 Bit processor since they did update VizWiz at the end of September and list iO?S 7 compatibility. I also remember another person saying they couldn’t record and it would be interesting to pin this down and let them know although I somehow think they must have figured this out by now. Anyhow, my answer took about 7 hours and I think I read somebody else got a reply the next day. I used to use VizWiz on my digital thermostat which controls my in-floor heating, but I tried this with Tap Tap See and got the correct reply with the current temperature within 20 seconds. I have a feeling VizWiz may be one of these apps like Daisy Worm or In Daisy which will just seize to exist at some point. It definitely shows how Tap Tap See did the right thing and went with a paid model, let’s hope this works for them and they make enough money to not only keep the service going but to improve it and add the ability to ask a simple question along with the picture. The next step is that you will be prompted to record a question. A new screen will open and you can toggle the different types of response engines. I usually only select web workers. The last time I use the app it took about 4 minutes to get a response. However, at the time, I didn't have any sighted assistance, so the wait was worth it. HTH. I'm not positive the question recording workek, but still this is the best result I've gotten in a long time. I also wrote to support and got a thoughtful and positive response back. I hope that VizWiz can improve and mature as a app. It seems that they are also hurting from lack of funding and other changes making it difficult to reply to the requests.
