Re: Turn-By-turn Directions Only With Car Mode In Navigon
Go into settings, then route, and flick right to pedestrian, and if it says pedestrian pedestrian mode, then double tap pedestrian and flick right to where it says pedestrian mode with street announcements and double tap. See if that was the trouble. This also assumes you have the setting under sound to include voice with street names. I think you should cite where you found the information regarding Internet Explorer 9 and earlier no longer play well with apple websites. I'm only asking for a citation because many having problems finding information or using the apple website might use your information and conclude that the troubles are due to Internet Explorer 9 when this might not be the case at all. the end result will be tons of postings blaming Internet Explorer 9 which will then result in tons of subsequent posts stating Internet Explorer 9 is finding Apple webpages just fine. RE: iTunes help needed
Hello Lori, Oh my. The thought of you spending so much time trying to get iTunes up and running, breaks my heart. Thank you for answering my questions. In a nutshell, your answers confirm what I had feared might be the case. In no way am I suggesting that you cannot get iTunes up and running but you have quite a few hardware and software challenges stacked up against you. As rose writes in a subsequent post to this thread, you might consider uninstalling all Apple components from your computer via the Add/Remove Control Panel and simply reinstall iTunes. Please note that I suggest that you first uninstall iTunes and all Apple components. Merely installing iTunes over itself will most likely not resolve your problem. Also keep in mind that, from your computer's perspective, iTunes is a memory hog--especially where screen-reading software is concerned. Finally, please remember that none of this is your fault. You have done absolutely nothing wrong. Re: iTunes help needed
Let me say: Please don't let these very unfortunate experiences, the non-opening, and the not being able to import that third cd yet, permanently ruin your overall thinking about iTunes, or your iPhone. The non-opening experience probably is not your fault, really, something has gone wrong with the files on your computer that is causing your problem. I don't know if you are one of them, but some people would let themselves be completely put off toward iTunes by this incident happening so near the beginning of their experience with it. Please don't let this happen to you. Before you had this not opening problem to occur, I had written a response to you as to how to get it to import that third cd, which I have saved in my drafts folder. I will wait to send it, after you get iTunes working again. Hello Lori, I completely second Arnold's sentiment. iTunes, even on Windows, in my never-to-be humble opinions, is one of the most effective and easy-to-use content managers I've ever used. In fact, when setting up new Windows computers for people, I always install iTunes even if they do not have an iOS device. I do this because, once understood, many find that they prefer it to some other popular Windows-based content managers. Out of curiosity, I just ran a quick search of the Apple.com support pages and found nothing regarding problems with the combination of the Apple website and Internet Explorer 9. I did find some references to the need for a plug-in and such, but plug-ins are common for many products. In short, it appears that those using Internet Explorer 9 need not worry about problems with Apple webpages and access to content beyond what one can expect from using a screenreader. Since you say that you're with T-Mobile, then you're going to need a GSM MVNO. I hear that AllTel and Straight Talk are pretty good. You could just stick with T-Mobile since their cheapest Simple Plan is something like $40.00 for unlimited talk, text and 500 mb of data. I use Ting which uses the Sprint network and am paying around $50.00 a month for both my wife and I. Ting wouldn't work for you as the GSM phone won't work on the Ting/Sprint CDMA network. That and Ting doesn't yet support the 5C. I think ATT has started to offer so-so attractive pre-paid smart phone plans too, but perhaps someone whose using ATT or one of the other GSM MVNO companies can chime in with more accurate information. Re: Turn-By-turn Directions Only With Car Mode In Navigon
Hi Richard, I just checked the settings and pedestrian with voice annoucements is selected. The difference that I observed through VO speaking was after the address was entered and the first start route was double tapped on to select the type of route to be used. When in pedestrian mode in the options, there isn't a button for turn-by-turn directions like seen with the car mode. I was just wondering if I am just discovering this now or is it a bug that I never knew about. Thanks for your response. Yes, it's definitely one of the more expensive apps out there, but it is also very good and the developer has released some pretty major updates with lots of new features and given this history will probably continue to do so. RE: Confusion over syncing outlook contacts
You're right, some of the settings in the iCloud Control Panel don't read that well with JAWS, but it can be done. If you use JAWS 15, the touch cursor is best in my view; otherwise the JAWS cursor should be used in certain dialog boxes. Also, there is no way to adjust these settings other than in the iCloud Control Panel app itself. They cannot be adjusted on the iCloud website. Since you've already turned syncing on, my suggestion would be to simply delete any contacts or groups you don't want from the iCloud data set. Keep in mind that any contacts which were synced have been removed from your local data file in Outlook and placed into the iCloud data set. I think they are placed in the Deleted Items folder. So, make sure you have a local copy of them before removing them. That article that you linked to in your last message was talking about the requirements for syncing and editing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. You may safely ignore that requirement. As for contacts, calendars and reminders sync, I am using Outlook 2013 and have never used Outlook 2007 before with iCloud. However, Apple's own knowledge base clearly states that Outlook 2007 should work fine, so I believe the representative you spoke to was incorrect. Try to follow all the troubleshooting steps linked to in these articles. The idea is to store your data in the cloud then sync it to any devices that you want, such as to an iPhone, an iPad, and perhaps Outlook on a PC. You can also collaborate with other people by having, say, a shared calendar that everyone in your family can add to or change whenever they want, and the results are pushed to everyone's devices. It's a way to sync your data from device to device without having to think about it or connect any wires. It has nothing to do with iCloud backup. That is a totally separate function of iCloud. RE: Transferring OOTunes Recordings to a Computer
Hi Tom, the recordings are stored in iTunes backups, so can be saved to your computer that way. There's no way built within the app to export the recordings. Also, keep in mind that only recordings that you've elected to save are stored in backups. Temporary recordings are not-and in iOS 7, there is a bug where temporary recordings cannot be saved after the fact. You need to save them while the recording is in progress, such as by adding a marker. Re: Confusion over syncing outlook contacts
Hi Grant and Cher, Since you're experimenting with your Contacts... Here is a great app for backing up Contacts. A copy of all your Contacts will will be saved to your iDevice. When you then attach your iDevice to your computer via iTunes you will be able to access each backup to save on your desktop; you essentially have a backup of your backups. What I love about this little app is that it creates independent backups, so if your Contacts change in a month, or if you accidentally delete many Contacts, you need only import a prior day's backup, and you are right back to where you started--literally in about 2 seconds. This app is 100% accessible and a must have app which costs only $1. As for contacts, calendars and reminders sync, I am using Outlook 2013 and have never used Outlook 2007 before with iCloud. When I became aware of this app a year or two ago, the price was $21 or $22. It has gone up twice since then. Still, it is a very comprehensive app with a narrow target audience, and all updates have so far been free. Plus, much of the costs are to cover server-based functions that the developer has to pay for somehow, so the app's creator sees less of the money than you might think. I totally understand people saying the price is too high - in fact, I only own it now because I won a copy - but I just wanted to explain that, as I understand it, the developer isn't upping the price just because he thinks he can. TextSync Inconsistencies. Experience of Others?
I love the concept of the TextSync app which lets you easily share text from your computer via text entered into a web page to the app on your iDevice and vice versa. However, I seem to get inconsistent results with TextSync not syncing or the web page not loading and was curious if others are having issues with it. If I'm in a hurry to get text from my computer to my iPhone, I've reverted to the ZeroTap app which does the same thing as TextSync but does so more reliably. T-Mobile has an offering on its website that provides unlimited text and data along with 100 voice minutes for $30 a month. With a Chase Ink credit card, It is actually $28.50. Re: ICloud Account
Yes to both. Once you start syncing anything (contacts, calendars, reminders, Safari, etc) with iCloud, the data is backed up each time you change it and the app sycs. Full iCloud backups of your device happen when the device is connected to wifi and locked, but backups of iCloud-synced data go on all the time. You can log into www.icloud.com and access the things you normally can on your phone, so long as you are backing them up. That site is not great with screen readers, but most of it is usable. However, all this data syncs to iCloud devices, not just the site. So, when I add contacts on my Mac, my phone has them as well, for instance. Or if you had an iPad as well, you could set up some calendar appointments on that and they would appear on your phone. Re: [Blindsquaregps] BlindSquare version 2.2 Release Notes
I wasn't trying to single you out; sorry if it came across that way. I kept meaning to reply to this thread, and yours was the message to which I finally replied. As I said, though, I can see thinking $30 is too much. In the days of finding an app for $10 and thinking it seems a bit steep, $30 is off the charts. It is a nice app, though, and worth it if you do a lot of navigating. Plus, for the accessibility, it is the cheapest - way less than Sendero's app. No one say I'm missing the point and that the two apps are different, please. I know the differences, I know the workarounds, I know the strengths of both. I'm just making a general comparison. RE: ICloud Account
Thanks, that is brilliant, so in theary, if I back up the contacts and change my phone, setting up the account on the new phone will synchronise them back? I tried to go in to mail but no account was there e.g. inbox or anything. I added a new ICloud account but it then said that account was already added, do I need to go in to settings and tick mail or something so that I can then go in to mail and use my ICloud account to send and receive messages etc? Can you edit your contacts by logging in to the ICloud? I jhave lots of contacts that I would like to add and also add email addresses to the existing ones which I haven't done until now, it may be quicker to edit these if I can do it using my PC and a full keyboard, I am still quite slow with the touch screen. Thanks again for all your kind help, the more I get in to my IPhone, the more it amazes me to be honest, it is so powerful and you can do so much with it, more like a pocket laptop than a phone :) And Apple write the screen reader which is a real bonus in my opinion. RE: Braille display with pages
Hi Alan, could you provide a link or source about the accessibility of Pages from Apple (e.g. where you heard that they say it is totally accessible)? I have not been able to find documentation like this. There are certainly aspects of Pages that are accessible on iOS, but in my experience I would not say it is totally accessible (or, at least, I'd say lots of it is quite tricky to use with VO). For example, I do not believe there is any way to review formatting, alignment, etc. for text under the cursor. You could select text and then navigate into the formatting options to try to get the information (e.g. by looking to see if the bold or italic options are selected), but that would only work if all the text you selected had the same formatting. I consider myself to be a power user of iOS with VO, so I'd be pretty surprised if I'm missing something here, but of course I'd love to stand corrected. Even though it's not the best quality recording I might also want to edit the recording using Audacity or something like it and burn it to a CD later. So, is there an easy way to transfer that OOTunes recording to my PC using ITunes or am I stuck with leaving the recording on my phone? Thanks in advance. New Hangouts update
Hello list, I'm headed out the door, but thought I'd drop this quick note. I just downloaded the new Hangouts update and at first glance, it seems to be pretty accessible. At least way more than the previous two updates. Anyway, I'll play with it a bit more, but figured I'd let others know and if they can give it a spin to see their impressions. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: ICloud Account
Yes, if you just sign into any Mac or iOS device with your account, any data you had synced will appear. This won't sync installed apps, but basic content and even some data in supported apps will all work fine. For mail, you need an iCloud account. You create one by, as you said, checking the mail checkbox in iCloud settings. Confusingly this will technically be a second Apple ID, so you will not be able to use this new address as your ID to replace the one you use now. Still, the process is simple enough. I am not sure how well iCloud.com works for contact editing, but you can go in and give it a try as soon as you enable contact syncing over iCloud and let your phone push its content to Apple's servers. If you use Outlook, I believe Apple offers iCloud integration via their iCloud Control Panel; you could manage contacts that way if the website doesn't work out. On Jun 24, 2014, at 4:32 PM, Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES) steven.hi...@nhs.net wrote: Thanks, that is brilliant, so in theary, if I back up the contacts and change my phone, setting up the account on the new phone will synchronise them back? I tried to go in to mail but no account was there e.g. inbox or anything. I added a new ICloud account but it then said that account was already added, do I need to go in to settings and tick mail or something so that I can then go in to mail and use my ICloud account to send and receive messages etc? Can you edit your contacts by logging in to the ICloud? I jhave lots of contacts that I would like to add and also add email addresses to the existing ones which I haven't done until now, it may be quicker to edit these if I can do it using my PC and a full keyboard, I am still quite slow with the touch screen. Thanks again for all your kind help, the more I get in to my IPhone, the more it amazes me to be honest, it is so powerful and you can do so much with it, more like a pocket laptop than a phone J And Apple write the screen reader which is a real bonus in my opinion. RE: Confusion over syncing outlook contacts
Not familiar with 'touch' cursor- is this a new name for the invisible cursor? On the PC side, I was just getting graphics when trying to review the screen- no help from JAWS cursor :( I found today that on the phone, using the Groups button in Contacts still lets you select which group you want to see- so by selecting my iPhone group I'm a happy camper once again. . I was ready to have a fit last night when I saw that my general contacts, my phone's contacts, my husband's contacts, and an e-mail distribution list of over 200 people was all jumbled together on my phone. I'll have to fiddle a bit, but this is now looking very workable- I think :) Yeah! Also when you say adjust these settings in the iCloud Control Panel app are you meaning on the PC or somewhere on the device? Thanks so very much, - Cher -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Grant Hardy Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2014 3:32 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Confusion over syncing outlook contacts You're right, some of the settings in the iCloud Control Panel don't read that well with JAWS, but it can be done. As for contacts, calendars and reminders sync, I am using Outlook 2013 and have never used Outlook 2007 before with iCloud. However, Apple's own knowledge base clearly states that Outlook 2007 should work fine, so I believe the representative you spoke to was incorrect. You could also try contacting Apple telephone support and see if they can advise you. Off the top of my head, though, I can't remember if they would provide support for their Windows applications, but if you can tie it in to a question about your iOS device, they might be able to provide some suggestions. Hi all, Some time ago I was able to hide posts from a user in my newsfeed while not unfriending the person. With the latest update to the facebook app, I can't seem to hide a friend's posts. Does anyone know how to do this with the latest iphone app? Thanks, don -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Regarding my message about hiding all posts froma particular, would this be the same as blocking a user? Or, is there a difference?
