Re: Android's assistant for IOS?

I'm not sure, but ALL of Cortana's Features are NOT available on
Google's Android and/or Apple's iOS. It will take time to discover
which Features of Cortana are not available. As all of Google's
GooggleNow Features are not available on Apple's iOS as well.

I can't determine whether or not this is due to Apple's restrictions,
which prevent Google's PersonalAssistant and/or Microsoft's
PersonalAssistant from OutShining its Own PersonalAssistant(Siri),
but I presume this is the case.

At 06:47 PM 12/12/2015, you wrote:
Hey Chris, I'm kinda confused. What kind of restrictions are you
talking about that Cortana has. She can make phone calls, send
texts, make reminders, same thing as Siri can. If I remember
correctly, Google Now can't do that stuff. So that's why I think he
said it's either Siri or Cortana.

Hey Mark. I ended up making the iCloud mail account in Outlook manually. I

fix it but no dice. So I just did it manually. Thanks for the help.

Hello Sean,

First, let me applaud you for exploring Windows 10 with the iCloud control
Panel.

Second, let me assure you that Office 2007 Enterprise works perfectly well with
the iCloud Control Panel.

Third, it is very important that you understand what the iCloud Control Panel
for Windows does and does not do.

The thumbnail summary is that iCloud Control Panel does not provide for the
conveyance of iCloud mail, in Outlook. Now that may sound funny and some will
argue that it is not so, however, as someone who has been using the iCloud
Control Panel since its inception, I can tell you that I speak the truth.

When all is working as it should, iCloud Control Panel will ad your iCloud
Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks to one Outlook profile, only.

If you want to send and receive iCloud mail, you must setup your iCloud email
account in Outlook 2007 just as you would any iMap account; this is to say
independently from iCloud Control Panel. IN order to do this you will need to
know your username, password, and incoming and outgoing iCloud server names.
You may obtain the correct iCloud server configuration settings for Outlook
2007 via a quick Google search.

It does not matter which Outlook profile you associate with the control panel
as it is separate from the email protocol. Consequently, successfully signing
into the iCloud Control Panel in no way means that you have signed into your
iCloud email account.

So, for example, you could have it such that when you launch Outlook both your
iCloud mail is displayed along with all of your iCloud items such as Calendar
events and Contacts but you could also elect, as I do, to have Outlook launch
showing emails from a non-iCloud account while still displaying the iCloud
Contacts, Calendars, etc.

The point is that, in Outlook 2007 for Windows, the email functionality is
completely separate from the iCloud Control Panel functionality.

Hi all. I don't know what to do. Today I installed Windows 10 on my old 2010
polycarbon MacBook so I can practice getting used to it if businesses
transition to it and also a friend of mine has it so I wanna get to know it
better so I can help her. Anyway, I installed my copy of Microsoft Office
Enterprise 2007 and downloaded the latest version of iCloud. When I try to send
messages, I get this dialog to enter the password for p...@smtp.me.com or some
crap like that. I enter my password and it keeps popping up that password
dialog box. So that's telling me that it's rejecting my username and password.
Any way to fix this?

FAQ:

*what is a C wire?

The C wire originates from your heating/cooling system and provides 24 volt
power to your Lyric.

The C wire originates from your heating/cooling system and provides 24 volt
power to your Lyric. "C" stands for common and there is no universal color
used to designate this type of wire. If you do not have a C wire, your Lyric
will instead draw power from your heating and cooling systems to power its
battery.

* I am having difficulty removing my old thermostat?

Often, the thermostat will separate from the wallplate with moderate
pressure. Other times, there might be small screws holding the device in
place. If you are unable to pull it off, please refer to your thermostat
manufacturer's website or manual for removal instructions. NOTE: Do not
place your old thermostat in the trash if it contains mercury in a sealed
tube. Contact the Thermostat Recycling Corporation at
http://www.thermostat-recycle.org/ or 1-800-238-8192 for information on how
and where to properly and safely dispose of your old thermostat.

* What is the range or distance of the Wi-Fi signal in my thermostat?

The range or distance of the Wi-Fi signal is determined by your router.
Check your router's manual for additional information. It is possible that
your thermostat is unable to find or maintain reliable connectivity to your
Wi-Fi network because of a poor signal from the router. For example, most
homes have “dead spots” where Wi-Fi signals are unreliable. Since the Lyric
thermostat is fixed to the wall, this problem can be corrected by moving
your router to a better location or by setting up a repeater - a device that
will pick up and rebroadcast the wireless signal from your router to your
thermostat. You can either purchase and install a Wi-Fi repeater, or
configure an additional router to serve as a repeater. Most standard routers
can be configured as a repeater.

* I cannot connect to my guest network. What do I need to do?

Some wireless routers have advanced features like guest networks. It is
recommended that you connect your thermostat to your home network.

Subject: Questions about braille display for iPhone

Hello everyone,
I am a braille user, but, have never used a braille display with my computer
or idevice. I am interested in possibly purchasing a braille display for
use with my iPhone. I would want something rather small. Since I have
never used one, I really know little or nothing about them. Please give me
some idea of a price, and what ever else I might want to consider. Thanks
in advance.

Re: OT: Apple Music: Resuming Playing of a Selection in New Session

2015-12-14 Thread Craig Werner
Candy, I phoned Apple Support and discovered a solution to this
problem. As long as the Music app is open, the song or album last
played is remembered. In this case, closing a session by pressing the
"Pause" button and then the "Home" button saves the user's place
provided the app remains active in the App Switcher. Sometimes, the
simplest solutions are the most elusive.

Hi Jim,

Yes, but TruePlay is listening to what the microphone picks up and I believe
this has to be the external microphone since the microphone on the headset
doesn't pick up noise/sound the same way as the external microphone. So while
plugging in a headset would get rid of Voiceover interference, it would also
route any listening to the headset microphone.

Sieghard

If you do get a set of Play 3 or whatever and figure out the TruePlay let me

they can't figure out a way around the Voiceover interference.

Hi,

I do see myself changing them regularly between the bedroom, kitchin, sunroom
and the carport.

If their trueplay works as well as the inaccessible one did on my home theoter
system that just died, it would be a shame not to be able to use it. That's why
I am wondering if the instructions that are given are randomised according to
the current acoustics, or if a regular patton is used. I would suspect that it
would just be a regular patton. If so, if we could find out what the patton is,
we could at least give it a try and see if it improves the sound, if not, you
can revert the changes.

Cheers,
Brett.

Hi Brett, Krister and Jim,

As long as you don't change the position of your speakers doing the TruePlay
tuning is a one-time process so it would be very easy to do if you asked a
sighted friend or family member to help doing this. Once it's done it does not
interfere with Voiceover in any way.

I am just about to set the house up with Sonos, I am wondering if it is
possible to find out where the True Play button is on screen, then toggle
VoiceOver offf and activate it? If so, we would just need to know the order of
the instructions that Sonos gives and we may at least have a work around to do

I had to have help to do this with saround sound systems I have had in the past

speakers from room to room.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Questions about braille display for iPhone

2015-12-14 Thread Paul Ferrara
First, and you were mentioning this, how many cells do you want/need? The
Focus 14, ReFreshaBraille, and a few others have 14 or 18 cells and are
great for phones. If you need more cells, you may want to consider a 40-cell
display. The smaller ones with fewer cells, of course, are best for low
price, and I know I am forgetting others, the Smart Beatle, for instance. I
do not know the prices offhand, but you can check

www.aph.org

for the ReFreshaBraille

www.freedomscientific.com

for the Focus 14

and I believe Hims Inc. makes the Smart Beatle; it is the one small one I
know the least about. It is worth talking to them too.

That should get you started.

They are easy enough to pair; each has a 4-digit code you enter into the
phone to pair using bluetooth.

Hope that helps.

Thanks
in advance.

Re: iPlayer on Apple TV

2015-12-14 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

The app is ok but there are a few issues. For example, the
descriptions of the programmes aren't spoken unless you navigate to a
programme, go back then enter on it again. Additionally, I've noticed
that seemingly random programme names are spoken if you leave focus on
a programme on the main screen. Navigating by word also appears to be
broken.
Definitely a good effort though & the live TV is a welcome extra.

Cheers,
Ben.

FaceTime Problems after update to 9.2

2015-12-14 Thread Cris Ali
Hello folks,
The subject says it all. I used to enjoy FaceTime calls with my family
until this latest update to iOS 9.2. Ever since the update the phone drops
calls very often. Sometimes only after few seconds. I am using iPhone 4S.

Does anyone else have a problem with FaceTime calls? I reset all network
settings many times, but the problem was not solved.
Any ideas?
Cheers,

Cris

Re: The latest iTunes is seriously confusing me!

2015-12-14 Thread Brett
'Hi,

Another thing you could check is that your iPhone is the only USB connected
device to your computer. When ever I forget to unplug my USB harddrive before
connecting my iPhone, it is never seen by Itunes.

When this happens, I need to close Itunes, umplug my phone and USB harddrive,
then launch iTunes and then reconnect my phone. All then works as it should.

Not sure if this is your issue, so just throwing it out there in case it helps.

Cheers, Brett.

They have done an absolutely fantastic job with this app. It's fully
accessible, you can watch all the BBC channels live, and the on-demand
programming is well organised. This in conjunction with the recent tvOS update,
Pandora, and a few other new apps is making the new Apple TV very attractive.

Hi Sieghard,
Thanks for the confirmation. I hope others will report this to Apple.
I have not had a response yet from them.

RE: iCloud keeps rejecting Password For SMTP server

2015-12-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Sean,

Yes, now that I think about it, I suppose they have changed.

I am writing this from a Windows PC via Outlook 2007 Enterprise. Looking at
the side panel, within Outlook, I can see my iCloud plug-in which contains my
iCloud Contacts, Calendar events, Tasks, etc; there is no Inbox item.

In previous versions, a long while ago, to me it seems, there was an Inbox item
listed as well but no longer.

Hey Mark, so what you're saying is things have changed? Because I had the same
configuration with Windows 7 and Ms Office 2007 enterprise and all worked fine.
When I say the same configuration, I mean I had all my contacts, calendar
entries and reminders synched to outlook plus emails using the iCloud control
panel. But if this has changed, I'll have to correct it tomorrow.

RE: Windows 10 home and itunes 12.3.2

2015-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard,

I tried this just now on my laptop running Windows 10 Professional 64 Bit
and after I upgraded iTunes to 12.3.2 (same as yours) and I can confirm the
same behavior. iTunes crashes as soon as you get to the Genre combo box and
try to change something.

Editing song title, artist and album however seems to be no problem.

I just sent the below to Apple Accessibility. Anyone else having this kind
of issue?

I am using Windows 10 Home 64 bit.

I have the latest iTunes, 12.3.2.

I was trying to edit the genre of a disc and got the below error. This
happened both with NVDA and Window-Eyes, both latest versions.

[Window Title]

iTunes

[Main Instruction]

iTunes has stopped working

[Content]

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close
the program and notify you if a solution is available.

[Close program]

Not a very helpful error message.

Re: Widgets with Twitter and other apps?

2015-12-14 Thread Gerardo Corripio
OK go into the Notification Center as always; you know how you see two
pages, Today and the regular Notifications? OK go to the Today where you
generally see the Weather forecast;
1.-You're now on the Today area of the Notification Screen, right? Now
flick right to where it says Edit and double-tap;
2.-You'll see that it says Insert so and so, where the so and so is for
instance Dropbox, TuneIn etc. Double Tap on TuneIn to insert this Widget
into the Notification Center;
3.-Double-tap the OK button and now in the Today Notification area,
aside from the weather and reminders, you should see the TuneIN Widget
with the 3 or four most-recently played stations on it.

into Tunein itself! Anyway I wonder wouldn't it be awesome if somehow the
official Twitter app, would incorporate a Widget that would allow us, like we
used to be able to do in iOS6, directly from the Notification area, send
tweets? Yes I'm used to going into the Official Twitter app, to the Top.right
corner where it says Edit Tweet, etc., but if such widget would be available,
it would most certainly make publishing tweets a bit more efficient! Dont you

Widgets with Twitter and other apps?

2015-12-14 Thread Gerardo Corripio

 HI guys
You know how with iOS9 if widgets are available, one can add them to the
Notification screen? I've got the TuneIn Radio one and it's awesome! you
can select among the three most-recently listened stations without
having to go into Tunein itself! Anyway I wonder wouldn't it be awesome
if somehow the official Twitter app, would incorporate a Widget that
would allow us, like we used to be able to do in iOS6, directly from the
Notification area, send tweets? Yes I'm used to going into the Official
Twitter app, to the Top.right corner where it says Edit Tweet, etc., but
if such widget would be available, it would most certainly make
publishing tweets a bit more efficient! Dont you guys think so?

Hi Rebecca,

Are you sure braille is set to UEB and contracted braille? You'll need both for
the text you write in UEB to show the correct accents.

2015-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Have you rebooted your phone? If that doesn't help remove all apps from the app
switcher, then go to Settings > General > Reset and double tap on Reset work
settings. ?This will clear up any stuck connections and reboot your phone.
After the phone reboots you have to go to Settings > WiFi and reconnect to your
WiFi including entering the password.

Hello there. I cannot read download Facebook after taking it off of my apps
list on my phone because of the fact that it was storing too much data and
given me a lot of disk space not free. So I needed to delete the app. And I did
so however now I can't put the app back on my phone because it says whenever
you press the button cancel download but does not give a progress bar as to
when it will be done and does not give a progress bar how much it is
downloaded. I have to triple tap to get the button to click. If I just double
tap it it just says download. If I triple tap it it goes in to cancel download
but does not give me the proper progress bar. How can I fix this? Thank you.

Particularly good idea, cheaper and more achievable than onboard accessibility
like you said.
BT is the only network they need to be on really; this hooking everything to
the actual internet is an idea fraught/frought with
problems.

Ps: I didn't know how to spell that, but I tried.

leading on from the discussion about thermostats: it seems to me that there are
more and more gadgets/machines that have in
accessible touchscreens. I am thinking of some exercise machines, some
microwaves, and the latest version of the Thermo mix in
particular. I am wondering, if they were Bluetooth enabled, would it be
possible to develop apps to interface with these machines?
in other words, would this be an area to lobby? just pulling an Idea out of the
air here, but it seems to me we could use our phones
for a whole lot more things now that Bluetooth is coming online in many many
items. rather than demanding access ability in each and
every different thing, accessibility could be achieved via apps on our phone
instead.

just a thought,

RE: Siri and contacts with company names only:

2015-12-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mark,

I don't know why it works for you and Chris and not for me and others. I just
tried to add "Work" which I have as the label for most companies and I made
sure that the 2 companies I tried had that label and SIRI still tells me "Oh,
oh, I don't have a phone number for...". Two other companies, our taxi company
and Safeway I edited and put "Safeway" and "BV Taxi" back in the last name
field in addition to leaving it in the company field and they work perfectly.

Thank you for letting me know.

Wow! That's really something.

I just tried the method I described on all three of my most recent iPhones and,
as I was at dinner with two sighted iPhone users, I tested the same method on
both of their iPhones and Siri worked perfectly. Unlike me, they both have the
new Six Plus S.

I'll definitely use the feedback form to add my voice to this problem.

Hello Mark,
Sorry, but I have already tried calling contacts that just have the name in the
company field by including the label, and Siri still says that there is no
phone number for that contact.
I can not say why Siri will call some of the contacts, and not call others, but
including or not including the label makes no difference.

In my own personal case, Siri will call all of my companies except for 2 or 3.
I can not find any difference in my company contacts, I use the same label for
all. I do think this is a problem that Apple needs to look into.

Comparison of Google's GoogleNow, Microsoft's Cortana, & Apple's Siri

Hi,
At least the iOS version (I think). I think we should wait for Cara to give us

When you write Spanish on your idevice, do you make sure you change the
language in the voice rotor to spanish as well? It is necessary to do if you

Here are a few more comments from a screen reader using
friend on how Cortana works on a desktop computer. I don't know how
this compares with it's delivery on an IOS device.
If you give Cortana a reminder, when the reminder time arrives it
puts the reminder message on the screen, but does not read aloud
what the reminder message is. It will open word pad, but my friend
did not succeed in getting it to open documents or even internet explorer.
What he likes is that you can ask cortana what time it is, what the
date is, to tell you a joke or sing you a song, or tell you a
story. You can ask it silly things, like do you love me, or what is
your favorite color? If you ask her who her parents are, she says,
"bill gates."
you can ask Cortana things like, convert quarts to liters, or how
many teaspoons are in a tablespoon, or how many miles equals how
many kilometers, or just about any conversion you want. If you ask
how old jimmy carter is, she will give the correct answer. If you
ask her how old john denver is, she will reply with something like
john denver was 42 when he died in 1987.

These are not the correct numbers - I just made them up by way of example.
Cortana can also give you the dictionary's version of word
definition, you say hey cortana to wake her up, then you say,
define, and then say the word, and she's right on. And if you have
some music in your documents folder, say maybe some beatles songs,
ask cortana to play i wanna hold your hand, and she will!
if cortana can't give you a quick and easy answer she will open a
website that will probably help you find the answer you need!
According to my friend who I asked about this, another important
note which might help some is that if you get windows ten, there is
currently no screen reader that works good with windows ten. By
default windows ten will use a new version of a browser, it it is
called edge, to fix this press the windows key, then type in default
programs, on the next screen you will be able to change the default
back to internet explorer. My friend recommends doing this, since he
finds that all the screen readers he uses work much better with
internet explorer than with the edge browser!

It seems to me that Cortana is more a benefit than not.

singly if necessary or else if you are changing something that refers to a
number of items in which case you can select them and - either press
vo+shift+m for contextual menu or try the shortcut key combination
command+i. A dialog window will open and there you have several tabs.
Usually the first on the left is details tab. Listen for voiceover to say
selected and then you will know which of the tabs is active. Then move to
the right where you will encounter scroll area. You need to interact with
 it
with vo+shfit+down arrow. In the scroll area you can edit info. You need
to stop interacting with the scroll area with vo+shift+up arrow so that you
can go left and choose another tab like options. 'And again you will need
to find the scroll area to interact with it and make your changes. Explore
all the tabs so that you become more familiar with the changes available.
Once you have finished, you need to find ok button so that your changes
 take
effect. I know it's a lot of learning but it will be worth it.

One word about selecting tracks in your music table. If you for instance
want to change a tag for all songs in an album, select this album in your
music browser first. then interact with the table of songs, highlight them
all with command+a and call up "get info' contextual menu item. You can
make your changes for all the tracks simultaneously.

It's more troublesome to change tags for a few traks in a longer list of
items. The way I do this is to interact with the table of songs first, and
then use the command vo+command+enter key to select items I want. Use
vo+down arrow to move down or up the list and when you've found the item
 you
wish to add to the list of highlighted tracks, press vo+command+enter key
 to
add it to selection. Voiceover will say so. Then when you've completed
 your
selection, you can double check with key combination vo+f6 to hear all the
items that are currently selected. Then you can call up your contextual
 menu to make changes.

 Hope this will help somewhat.

it's delivery on an IOS device.
If you give Cortana a reminder, when the reminder time arrives it puts the
reminder message on the screen, but does not read aloud what the reminder
message is. It will open word pad, but my friend did not succeed in getting
it to open documents or even internet explorer.
What he likes is that you can ask cortana what time it is, what the date is,
to tell you a joke or sing you a song, or tell you a story. You can ask it
silly things, like do you love me, or what is your favorite color? If you
ask her who her parents are, she says, "bill gates."
you can ask Cortana things like, convert quarts to liters, or how many
teaspoons are in a tablespoon, or how many miles equals how many kilometers,
or just about any conversion you want. If you ask how old jimmy carter is,
she will give the correct answer. If you ask her how old john denver is, she
will reply with something like john denver was 42 when he died in 1987.
These are not the correct numbers - I just made them up by way of example.
Cortana can also give you the dictionary's version of word definition, you
say hey cortana to wake her up, then you say, define, and then say the word,
and she's right on. And if you have some music in your documents folder, say
maybe
some beatles songs, ask cortana to play i wanna hold your hand, and she
will!
if cortana can't give you a quick and easy answer she will open a website
that will probably help you find the answer you need!
According to my friend who I asked about this, another important note which
might help some is that if you get windows ten, there is currently no screen
reader that works good with windows ten. By default windows ten will use a
new version of a browser, it it is called edge, to fix this press the
windows key, then type in default programs, on the next screen you will be
able to change the default back to internet explorer. My friend recommends
doing this, since he finds that all the screen readers he uses work much
better with internet explorer than with the edge browser!
It seems to me that Cortana is more a benefit than not.

I'm not sure. All I know is that there are
different version/iterations of HappyBirthday
that Cortana sings on Microsoft's MobilePhone
(and quite possibly Windows10) as compared to
Google's Android and/or Apple's iOS

Re: Apple Music: Resuming Playing of a Selection in New Session

2015-12-14 Thread Craig Werner
Thank you for your suggestion, Arnold. The "My Music" tab displays music I
have purchased or that I have added to my library. The music I am talking
about is music I have listened to but have not purchased, which does not
appear accessible in the 'For You' tab. As I said,
the player used to pop up on the first screen of Apple Music, but after
suggesting liked music to the service, this option seems to have
disappeared.

Re: gadgets with touchscreens?

2015-12-14 Thread Kimber Gardner
We recently installed a Casa Vera system to control thermostats and
lights in our house. Although the thermostats themselves are not
accessible and the iOS app is not great, the system can be accessed
through the web interface on my iPhone. It's not especially easy to
control and required some exploration and a bit of playing but it's
doable. Interestingly, I can't say the same for access from the laptop
using a screen reader.

So yeah, I think we have a ways to go with accessibility of this type of gadget.

more and more gadgets/machines that have in accessible touchscreens. I am
thinking of some exercise machines, some microwaves, and the latest version of
the Thermo mix in particular. I am wondering, if they were Bluetooth enabled,
would it be possible to develop apps to interface with these machines? in other
words, would this be an area to lobby? just pulling an Idea out of the air
here, but it seems to me we could use our phones for a whole lot more things
now that Bluetooth is coming online in many many items. rather than demanding
access ability in each and every different thing, accessibility could be
achieved via apps on our phone instead.

just a thought,
Sandy

I can't read download Facebook. It says cancel download but does not show progress bar tell me how far it is downloading what do I do?

2015-12-14 Thread Gerald Mader
Thank you.

Subject: OT: Apple Music: Resuming Playing of a Selection in New Session

Hello, everyone.

I am a new user of Apple Music. The first few times I accessed the
service, I could start playing an album, close the session, re-open
it, and be presented with the album's name to play. Now, instead of
having this handyat the bottom of the screen, I am faced with a list
of Apple recommendations. How can I easily find the music I was
playing during the previous session without re-initiating a search for
it?

Thanks for all help.

Craig

Re: iCloud keeps rejecting Password For SMTP server

2015-12-14 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey Mark, so what you're saying is things have changed? Because I had the same
configuration with Windows 7 and Ms Office 2007 enterprise and all worked fine.
When I say the same configuration, I mean I had all my contacts, calendar
entries and reminders synched to outlook plus emails using the iCloud control
panel. But if this has changed, I'll have to correct it tomorrow.
