Hi,
You can send iMessages to an iPod. And you can either use your
apple ID, or add an email address, to be used as the messaging
ID.

You can send text messages to any other device with a phone

Underneath the surface, iMessages and text messages are
fundamentally
different technologies, even though they both live in the

I think it's important for every iPhone owner to know the
difference
between text messages and iMessages, because that knowledge can
have a

Hi Esther,

I'm getting my text and notification alert sounds when my iPhone 7 is locked
but Voiceover isn't reading anything. I know with my iPhone 6 running the same
iOS that Voiceover did read incoming messages and notifications received while
my phone was locked. I'm thinking this must be an iPhone 7 issue since both of
my phones were running the same iOS and all the same settings. I've written
Apple Accessibility about this issue.

Hi, Alan!

I'm so glad that you finally are receiving all of your notifications. I had
also tried turning off all my apps in Notifications but it didn't work for me.
Glad it did for you! Are you getting them on the locked screen. I still am
not.

Can anyone offer any suggestions how I can get the notifications on my new

I personally never bother Google accounts; I simply use my Gmail address for

Hello, everyone.

It might be of interest to a number of you that the latest release of
the Gmail app for iOS devices operates somewhat differently with
VoiceOver than did previous versions, and based on the testing I have
done, the app has improved for VoiceOver users. In earlier versions,
if one wanted to delete a message from the message index, one would
have to check a checkbox next to its header information and then press
a "Delete" button. Now, double-tap and holding the button
corresponding to the unwanted message places the app in a "Select"
mode. The user can then move down the list of messages and simply
double-tap the unwanted ones; the "hold" gesture needs to be used only
on the first undesired message. Then, once the "delete" list has
been compiled, the "Delete" button can be activated. There are other
ways to get rid of messages, but I don't want to make this message
overly long. There is also an "Undo" button which evidently allows
the user to take back a number of actions. I have not tested this
function yet. Most gratifying is the possibility that the bug which
prevented text editing of the body of a message may have been
squashed, at least if the user is typing on the on-screen keyboard. I
haven't tested it with a Bluetooth keyboard yet.

RE: Quick Question for Apple iOS Beta Testers

2016-11-07 Thread Todd Patkus
Chris et al,

I have absolutely no interest or absolutely no need for these stuff.

Apple is not the only one. Freedom Scientific is one of them. They like to
release public Beta annually, but I do not care about them. These
stuff--Apple's Beta and FS' Beta--are simply nothing but simply a big waste!
Beta does not do any good.

Look at bugs still appearing in newer versions. They do not do enough to first
check their versions more thoroughly first to ensure the software work
correctly before releasing them. Instead, they just enhance new features and
then, without adequate investigation, send out new versions filled with more
unwanted bugs to make customers complain!

That is it.

Interestingly enough, here's what Apple says at
https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/legal

Please keep in mind that you should not install beta software on production or
business-critical systems. We strongly recommend installing beta software on a
secondary system or device, or on a secondary partition on your Mac.

Re: Quick Question for Apple iOS Beta Testers

2016-11-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Interestingly enough, here's what Apple says at
https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/legal

Please keep in mind that you should not install beta software on
production or business-critical systems. We strongly recommend
installing beta software on a secondary system or device, or on a
secondary partition on your Mac.

Hi,

No worries I’m not asking anything that’d cause anyone to violate a
non-disclosure agreement at all. I’m merely wondering for those who
participate in Apple’s beta testing of iOS how many do so on their main
iDevice versus doing so on a secondary device. Right now I’ve obtained a
secondary device for beta testing purposes but still weigh sending it
back and merely testing on my main device. thus I was curious what
others chose and why.

See nothing harmful or controversial there. Thanks for indulging my
curiosity.

Re: Quick Question for Apple iOS Beta Testers

2016-11-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't know if the NDA is a big deal as far as Apple is concerned or
how much trouble you could get into from Apple, but I do know Apple says
the following at https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/legal

5. Definition of Confidential Information. You agree that the
Pre-Release Software and any information concerning the Pre-Release
Software (including its nature and existence, features, functionality,
and screen shots), the Seeding Tools, and any other information
disclosed by Apple to you in connection with the Beta Program will be
considered and referred to in this Agreement as “Confidential Information.”

6. Nonuse and Nondisclosure of Confidential Information. Except as
expressly permitted in this Section 6, you agree that you will not
disclose, publish, or otherwise disseminate any Confidential Information
to anyone other than individuals who are enrolled in the same individual
seed as you, or as otherwise expressly permitted or agreed to in writing
by Apple. You further agree to take reasonable precautions to prevent
any unauthorized use, disclosure, publication, or dissemination of
Confidential Information, including preventing access to or display of
the Apple Software to third parties. You agree to use the Confidential
Information solely for the permitted uses as set forth in this
Agreement. You agree not to use Confidential Information otherwise for
your own or any third party’s benefit without the prior written approval
of an authorized representative of Apple in each instance. You hereby
acknowledge that unauthorized disclosure or use of Confidential
Information could cause irreparable harm and significant injury to Apple
that may be difficult to ascertain. Accordingly, you agree that Apple
will have the right to seek immediate injunctive relief to enforce
obligations under this Agreement in addition to any other rights and
remedies it may have.

I'm not here to tell anyone what to do or not do with the beta and the
NDA, but I would definitely encourage anyone to read the NDA before they
agree to it and join the beta and make up your own mind as to what Apple
wants you to do and not do. I definitely would not just take the word of
Shaf Patel on this list.

Re: Quick Question for Apple iOS Beta Testers

2016-11-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not beta testing IOS at the moment, but when I was running IOS 9, I
ended up beta testing IOS 9 because I ran into a few serious issues,
such as needing to restart the phone every time I made a phone call or
restarting IOS every time I replied to an email message. I didn't figure
the beta could make things any worse, and I figured I'd get my hands on
some fixes sooner running the beta.

My own advice would be to avoid running a beta on your primary device,
but that's something only each person can decide for themselves. This
will depend a lot on how each person uses their phone and how much they
could put up with potentially show stopping issues found in the beta or
it's accessibility.

have one iPhone as I personally don't see the need to have a second one or to
have an iPad or iPod Touch so if something happened again as when iOS 9 was
released where it was basically impossible to answer phone calls in many
situations that would be a real deal breaker for me with one device which I
rely on for personal and business use. It is up to you to decide what you are

Hi, Alan!

I'm so glad that you finally are receiving all of your notifications. I had
also tried turning off all my apps in Notifications but it didn't work for me.
Glad it did for you! Are you getting them on the locked screen. I still am
not.

Thanks for your response. I actually am not getting notifications at all,
and yes, the speak notifications in VoiceOver is turned on. All my apps

Hi Linda and all,

I was thinking that maybe it's different if you're saving to an external
drive. I know the limit is 32GB otherwise.

Perhaps someone knows if there's the same upper limit when using external
drives. I personally would think there probably isn't such a limit since
this would not be governed by the Touch but by the particular drive
provider but I look forward to confirmation either way.

You'll need a cellular number to send a text message. You can send text

What's The Difference Between iMessages and Text Messages on iPhone?

Underneath the surface, iMessages and text messages are fundamentally
different technologies, even though they both live in the Messages app

I think it’s important for every iPhone owner to know the difference
between text messages and iMessages, because that knowledge can have a
significant
impact on your phone bill.

Regular text messages use the text messaging plan that you purchase
through your carrier. There are two kinds of text messages:

◾ SMS (Short Message Service): The original text messages that we’ve
been using for years. SMS messages are limited to 160 characters and can
only contain
text.
◾ MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service): MMS messages extend the capability
of original text messages, and support sending photos, longer text
messages, and
other content.

Yes you can. You either send an iMessage to a phone number or an email

Firstly, the NDA isn't a big deal - you won't get in trouble by Apple
for discussing the beta publicly. Secondly, I use it on my main device
because I don't depend on my phone enough to worry about many bugs.

Police scanning apps.

Robin,

I see it.

When Andy said "scanner Deluxe", it sounded more likely to be similar to the
KNFB app that scans printed materials into images.

He could have used a different word to make it more accurate so as to avoid
confusion.

Hi,
I'm not Andy but perhaps I can clarify.
Scanner Deluxe refers to an app that allows the hearing of streams of police
radio communications. the physical devices some use to listen or stream this
audio from are called scanners as they scan the frequencies first responders
broadcast on. It has nothing to do with apps that scan in images of text to
turn into speech output. I hope this helps.

Andy,

Who is the scanner deluxe's manufacturer? You mean it is better than KNFB?

You may try scanner deluxe. It is similar to your app but it seems
better to me with more local coverage. Andy and Shubert

Subject: questions regarding police scanning Apps

Hello everyone,

I just have a quick question I hope someone can help me with.

I was wondering, is there possibly a better App out there, for finding
police and other type feeds?

I am currently using 50 Radio Pro. I have the paid version. I've had this
App for a few years now.

I like it alright, but it doesn't seem to have many feeds in my area. I
don't know why this is. And it is as though they have removed a couple of
feeds. I have found a few other feeds using Tune-in.

I live outside of Saint Louis. So you would think there would be many.
But I guess not.

Any help, or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Can you send an iMessage to an iPod? I'm asking because you said we don't need

Thank you so much. I have been trying to figure out the difference between

case something comes up with the beta that causes voiceover to do something
unexpected I can’t get caught without my phone. I do not have a land line.

Hi,

No worries I’m not asking anything that’d cause anyone to violate a
non-disclosure agreement at all. I’m merely wondering for those who participate
in Apple’s beta testing of iOS how many do so on their main iDevice versus
doing so on a secondary device. Right now I’ve obtained a secondary device for
beta testing purposes but still weigh sending it back and merely testing on my

See nothing harmful or controversial there. Thanks for indulging my curiosity.

Re: questions regarding police scanning Apps

2016-11-07 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
I'm not sure how he could have used different wording as that is the name of
the app to which he was referring. How else could he have posted about it
accurately without using its name?

Either way I'm glad the confusion was dispelled.

Robin,

I was wondering, is there possibly a better App out there, for finding

I am currently using 50 Radio Pro. I have the paid version. I've had this
App for a few years now.

I like it alright, but it doesn't seem to have many feeds in my area. I
don't know why this is. And it is as though they have removed a couple of
feeds. I have found a few other feeds using Tune-in.

I live outside of Saint Louis. So you would think there would be many.
But I guess not.

Any help, or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Re: Notifications Missing on New iPhone 7 was RE: A Couple of Problems

2016-11-07 Thread Robin Frost

Hi Alan,
Thanks for posting this I feel slightly less crazy now. Even though many
proclaimed that Apple is great with more than one device on an Apple ID and
that push should work fine on all of them that like yours was not my
experience at all. I'm finding it to be very hit or miss and very specific
to apps. for instance some news apps seem to perform fine while some of my
weather apps did not and social media apps were the worst offenders. Like
you they seem to be one device oriented (laughs).
So while I now have a secondary device for beta testing which leads me to a
question I'll post under separate cover I like you have found that having
all favorite apps pushing to more than one device at a time definitely does
seem to be quite hit or miss.

Hi Sieghard,

After googling around, it seems to me that getting all app notifications
across multiple devices might not be attainable. At least some of the
threads I came across seemed to indicate that.

Since I'm pretty much a one I device kind of guy, I just went into my old
iPhone 6 and turned off all app notifications. Now they are all coming to my
new iPhone.

I am experiencing the same issue that Esther originally posted about that
notifications received while my iPhone 7 is locked aren't being read by
VoiceOver. Perhaps I'll contact Apple Accessibility about that.

Thanks to all who replied on this thread.

Well, I have two iphones currently with the same name and Apple I'd. I
went in on my new iPhone 7 as you suggested and turned notifications off
and back on for every app on my phone. However, app notifications are only
coming in on my old iPhone 6 and not at all on my new iPhone 7. Maybe you
can't have two devices with the sane name on the sane Apple I'd and get
notifications on both of them. If you can, I'd love to know how to do it.

After I get all my downloaded bard book info loaded on my new phone, I'll
reset the old phone to clear it and I expect this will no longer be an
issue.

Can anyone offer any suggestions how I can get the notifications on my

Hi, Sieghard!

Thanks for your response. I actually am not getting notifications at
all, and yes, the speak notifications in VoiceOver is turned on. All my
apps are turned on and I've always had speak on locked screen on, even
on my other phones. It's quite a dilemma. I just went in and checked
all the settings again and they are as I've had them. I usually get

Thanks again and take care!

Hi Sieghard,

After googling around, it seems to me that getting all app notifications across
multiple devices might not be attainable. At least some of the threads I came
across seemed to indicate that.

 Hi Esther,

The fact you still have your old iPhone does not matter with respect to
notifications on your new phone. If set up correctly Notifications should
speak. Maybe you can explain exactly which notifications you want and how
you want them. Do you want them to show up on the lockscreen and/or in
notification centre? Do you want Voiceover to automatically speak them?
You may want to check in Voiceover settings for the "Automatically speak
notifications" toggle and turn it on if it is off.

RE: Bad iOS 10 X download how can I fix it?

2016-11-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sandy,

As Christopher said, doing this via iTunes is the best way. I would do an
encrypted backup and then select the Restore button, this will download the
latest version of iOS to your computer and then restore your iPhone, when it's
done you'll be asked if you want to set up as a new phone or restore either
from an iCloud or iTunes backup.
While there are definite accessibility issues with Jaws and iTunes, there is no
issue whatsoever when it comes to doing an encrypted backup or upgrading or
restoring via iTunes. When your phone is connected, just find the "iPhone"
button, then tab until you find the appropriate buttons like Update, Restore,
Backup etc., in order to do an encrypted backup you will have to check the
little checkbox and then enter and re-enter a password. Make sure you use one
you'll remember, this is not anywhere in the cloud so I don't usually pick a
very long and complicated password, you could even do a 4-number PinN.
If you don't want to do a restore and haven't installed the latest update,
10.1.1, you could simply try to upgrade via iTunes, in fact, you might want to
try it first and see if this fixes your issues, you can always do a restore
later and if you have already downloaded iOS 10.1.1 to do the update this
should be on your computer for a restore also.

Regards,
Sieghard

Important: the process of putting IOS into DFU mode has changed as of IOS10

2016-11-07 Thread Rajmund
Hi Guys,
First of all, if this is old, I don't know of it. Second, because my phone may
have past away, sad, I know, I'm trying the last chance, DFU. So, I powered off
the phone, held in POWER, then tried home. Every time I did that, though, the
apple logo immediately appeared. Turns out the process has changed. So now:
1) Make sure you're connected to iTunes, and phone's on. 2) Hold down
home-power, till iTunes says that you have to either recover or restore. For
those with light vision, you will be looking for a slightly dimmed screen, but
not total darkness. I'm surprised none of the apple lists that I have joined,
have mentioned this, particularly since I find it pretty important to mention
it. Anyway, we all now know that it has changed. Any questions, please ask.

Re: questions regarding police scanning Apps

2016-11-07 Thread 'ray t. mahorney' via VIPhone
Scanner radio deluxe might serve you better. Both talk to broadcastify.com.
One possibility for the reduced number of feeds, Most of those feeds are
provided by individuals For example, the feed for the W8VPV repeater is
basically a scanner at 60 feet connected to a computer streaming to
broadcastify. What may have happened is that some of these individuals have
had to discontinue their feeds. If on the other hand, the feed is being
provided by a government entity then you're pretty much at the murcy of that
entity and what they decide to stream or not. If you try scanner radio
deluxe, let me know how you get on with it.

Subject: questions regarding police scanning Apps

Hello everyone,

I just have a quick question I hope someone can help me with.

I was wondering, is there possibly a better App out there, for finding
police and other type feeds?

I am currently using 50 Radio Pro. I have the paid version. I've had
this App for a few years now.

I like it alright, but it doesn't seem to have many feeds in my area. I
don't know why this is. And it is as though they have removed a couple
of feeds. I have found a few other feeds using Tune-in.

I live outside of Saint Louis. So you would think there would be many.
But I guess not.

Any help, or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Bad iOS 10 X download how can I fix it?

2016-11-07 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
The best way is to put your phone into recovery mode and use ITunes to download
a new version of iOS.

Firstly, turn off your phone.

Connect it to your computer with ITunes running.

Press both the power and home buttons on your phone and hold for about 15
seconds.

Release the power button and keep the home button depressed and ITunes should
detect a phone in recovery mode.

You can then choose to download and restore your phone.

On an I6 it may be power with volume down rather than home can't remember try
both, one should work.

Viphone 7 ignoring lightning connected headsets

2016-11-07 Thread Larry Lumpkin
I have found that my new Iphone 7 often ignores a headset connected to it
whether it be the lightning buds that shipped with it or the aftershokz
bone-conduction set connected via the adaptor. It usually comes back just
by itself or by re-connecting it. Last time however, it did not and I had
to connect the charger to the phone and then re-connect the headset or buds.
Has anyone else experienced this?

RE: questions regarding police scanning Apps

2016-11-07 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi Terri.

I can't recommend a good police scanner app, but I can explain why the choices
are decreasing. Within the past few years, many ares have gone digital. In
other words, they're encrypting their transmissions, and you need a special
code to decrypt them. Some places are giving the codes out, but others aren't.
In a way, I can understand the latter thinking, because if using analog
transmissions, the bad guys would know the cops were coming and quit their bad
guy behavior. It's kind of sad, though, because I enjoyed listening to the
police and fire. Both my Grandfathers and an uncle of mine were volunteer fire
fighters, and my Grandparents on my Mom's side were perametics, so it was fun
to hear what was going on. I also had the 10 codes of the local police for
Lexington, Kentucky, where I live, so I could know pretty well what was
happening.

Hope that, if it doesn't help, at least it sheds some light on what's happening.

Kevin Minor, Lexington, KY

2016-11-07 Thread Gordon
So I use Godaddy for my personal email account and I don't think their
free included email account comes with imap access. So I have it set up
in my iPhone as a pop3 account. I can't seem to find the options to
indicate how often I want to check email in the background. I only use
this account for personal stuff, IE my daughter's teacher and official
stuff like that. So once an hour or 30 minutes would be perfect for
checking this account.

Why don't you try to call Apple Accessibility and see if they can help or, if
you have an Apple Store nearby, stop in and talk to them.

Well, I have two iphones currently with the same name and Apple I'd. I went in
on my new iPhone 7 as you suggested and turned notifications off and back on
for every app on my phone. However, app notifications are only coming in on my
old iPhone 6 and not at all on my new iPhone 7. Maybe you can't have two
devices with the sane name on the sane Apple I'd and get notifications on both
of them. If you can, I'd love to know how to do it.

After I get all my downloaded bard book info loaded on my new phone, I'll reset
the old phone to clear it and I expect this will no longer be an issue.

The Updated Gmail iOS App and VoiceOver

2016-11-07 Thread Craig Werner

Craig

Re: Ios's Braille keyboard and the for-sign don't work?

2016-11-07 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Gerardo,

The iPhone touch screen only recognizes up to five fingers at once. To type the
for sign, put five fingers on the screen, and while holding down four of them,
lift one and add the sixth. It's a little awkward at first, but doable.

Best,

NO. The iPhone always comes with some amount of charge already in it, even when

Yes it does feel like a button, but mechanically it doesn't do anything. You
can't really move it. When you press your finger to it you get the haptic

Hi Gera,
I believe even the 7, unless it's the plus, will only recognise 5
fingers at once. So to do the for, you will have to lift one
finger off the screen, and put the missing one on the screen.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Setting up Mailbox for ViPhone User Group

2016-11-07 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Depending on your mail service provider, you can do this at your server end. I
have cPanel, and have a lot of forwarders set up.
This does what you want.
Safari should be able to operate the cPanel interface. This would include the
webmail service.

Note: this is commonest in a hosting package with your own domain name, and
all that.

Is there a way to set up a mailbox on my iPhone so that all email from the
ViPhone user group go to a specific ViPhone mailbox
instead of my main Inbox. Did this on my Mac with the “Smart” mailbox feature.
As I understand from Apple Accessibility, “Smart”
mailboxes aren’t available on iPhones. Guess I could set up a separate email
address for each user group I subscribed to but not
real excited about doing that. Any ideas?

Re: no home button?

2016-11-07 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
For clarity: that's a screen button, not a mechanical one, right?

So, how does the finger print thing work now?

Thanks, BobH.

The iPhone 7 does have a home button. Wherever you found that from is obviously
giving false information. The only difference about
the button is that haptic,it's and a mechanical.

Re: Notifications Missing on New iPhone 7 was RE: A Couple of Problems

2016-11-07 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
I agree with you sir. I know in theory or principle it should work but I've
found it to be iffy too at best as I now have two iPhone 7Plus's on the same
Apple ID. Some apps perform fine pushing to both some just refuse to do it.
As to why it's a mystery of the age. For those apps I consider essential
I've merely turned them off on my second device. Do keep us posted once you
finally clear that old phone.

Well, I have two iphones currently with the same name and Apple I'd. I went
in on my new iPhone 7 as you suggested and turned notifications off and back
on for every app on my phone. However, app notifications are only coming in
on my old iPhone 6 and not at all on my new iPhone 7. Maybe you can't have
two devices with the sane name on the sane Apple I'd and get notifications
on both of them. If you can, I'd love to know how to do it.

After I get all my downloaded bard book info loaded on my new phone, I'll
reset the old phone to clear it and I expect this will no longer be an
issue.

Perhaps you have to go into some of the apps and set them up in order to
receive notifications again. I hope this will be successful for you.
Good luck.

Esther and All,

I'm getting the same issue you experienced with your iPhone 7 Plus, that
is, I'm getting all my notifications on my old iPhone 6 but nothing on my
new iPhone 7 which was restored from an iTunes encrypted backup. I went
under Settings, Notifications, and drilled down into each app on the new
phone and turned notifications off and back on again but I'm still not
getting anything. I didn't have your problem with my music as it all came
over when I synced with iTunes.

Can anyone offer any suggestions how I can get the notifications on my
new iPhone 7? Do I need to turn them off on my iPhone 6? I will be
resetting and clearing the iPhone 6 in order to sell it but that won't be
for a few days until I get all my BARD Mobile books identified and my
reading position noted.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Sieghard!

Thanks for your response. I actually am not getting notifications at
all, and yes, the speak notifications in VoiceOver is turned on. All my
apps are turned on and I've always had speak on locked screen on, even on
my other phones. It's quite a dilemma. I just went in and checked all
the settings again and they are as I've had them. I usually get
notifications from CNN, Headlines, a couple of my local television
channels, and my FitBit device, among others.

Thanks again and take care!

Hi Esther,

The fact you still have your old iPhone does not matter with respect to
notifications on your new phone. If set up correctly Notifications
should speak. Maybe you can explain exactly which notifications you want
and how you want them. Do you want them to show up on the lockscreen
and/or in notification centre? Do you want Voiceover to automatically
speak them? You may want to check in Voiceover settings for the
"Automatically speak notifications" toggle and turn it on if it is off.

Hi, Alan!

Thanks for responding. Concerning the native mail app, the three-finger
placement on the unread message is great! However, as far as my
notifications are concerned, I do have all the apps on in the
Notifications app and I'm still not getting them. Maybe it's because I
still have my iPhone 6+ and everything is still on it. I'm not going to
wipe it clean yet until I get my Music straightened out.

Thanks so much for your suggestions.
