Re: Issues with 10R

2019-06-26 Thread turab chimthanawala
Hi all,
I too recently bought a XR.Its workkin perfectly fine.
Just few small issues
1. The shortcut i.e triple click Power button for voice over is the
same for Emmergency SOS. Hence, I am having to turn off Emergency SOS.
Is this a bu?
2. I have upgraded from a IPhone 6. The XR seems too sensitive.
Specially switching repeatedly between portrait and landscape mode.
3. I find it difficult to locate the time, network etc. at the top of
the screen. In the 6, due to my partial eyesight I would locate the
same as the screen was bordered by the iphone body.
4. Any tips for effectively using face ID.

Eagerly await inputs.
Best
Turab

None of those issues on my XR either. That said, I bought my phone back in
October a week after it came out and the first phone I was given was booty. I
had to go back the next day to get another one. So yes, you sometimes can get a
lemon instead of an apple.

contacted Apple disability and they check out the phone and was unable to fix
it. Another person from Apple was going to contact him to see if he can solve
the issue. I assume Apple tried to restore the iPhone but not being able to
connect to iCloud that was not available to them. Of course this is what I kind
of understood from this friend who owns the phone. So my question is has anyone
who owns a 10 R had any issues with their iPhone like this?

Again I am getting this info second hand and I do not know how much my friend

cannot fix it, it should be under warranty and they should replace it if they
cannot fix it.

RE: Printing Just page 4 of a 7-page *.pdf document Via iPhone8 With Updated iOS?

2019-06-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Sorry, forgot about your other question.
as for going to a particular page, just do a 3-finger swipe up, I just opened a
5 page PDF and when I did a 3-finger swipe up it said Page 2, when I did it
again it said Page 3 etc. You can also do a 3-finger tap in the middle of the
page and Voiceover will tell you what page you are on, e.g. when I was on page
4 and I did that it said “Page 4”.

Thanks much, Sieghard, That helped a lot.
Two more question, when I picked up the page number to print, there was no
‘Done-Button’, ‘OK-Button’ or ‘Print-Button etc. I had to come back to previous
screen and select my printer again, is this a normal behavior?
Secondly, how can I navigate a PDF document from page to page, for instance, if
I am on page 3 and want to jump to page 8, how can I do that, please?
Thanks!

After you select your Airprint printer just use the page range button.
It shows you all pages and you have a “From” picker and a “To” picker.
If you want to print only page 4 out of 7, set the From picker to 4 and the To
picker also to 4, that’s it.

It seems to be, I had really never done this before, either, just tested it for

I think the easiest way is to set the page range first, then go back, select

RE: Creating A Brand New Email iCloud account Question Please.

2019-06-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mark,

I had never heard about this 90-day thing and I can't even remember when I last
logged in to my Outlook.com account online, but it's certainly been much longer
than 90 days. I am not paying for it either, but it continues to work just fine.
I don't know if it makes a difference that I also have a personal Office 365
subscription with my main Microsoft Id which I use, but I also have my
siegh...@live.ca email which I use for all my groups and an old
siegh...@hotmail.ca address which was my main personal email before the
@Outlook.com emails came along and it still works although I have neither
checked it via the Outlook client nor have I logged into it probably in a year,
but I just did and it still is fine and I had a few spam and other not
important emails in it.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hello Tom,

You have received some excellent replies on this question.

I want to add one more point: Recently, Google has been lambasted because of
the behavior, or lack their of, of the Chrome browser which has virtually no
respect for your privacy.

I think one should keep in mind that Google is in the business of data
collection and advertising. So, while gMail may have its good points, to me,
they are far outweighed by the fact that Google makes it perfectly clear that
all of your data, email or not, is mined in one way or another.

Now does Google care about the general data of the average user? Most likely,
"no," but. You never know when you and yours may become more than average.

Like Sieghard, I am a big fan of Microsoft Outlook.com and Microsoft Exchange.
Even after all these years, Exchange continues to be the gold standard.

However, keep in mind that if you sign up for a free Outlook.com account, you
must log-in to your account, via the web portal, at least once every 90 days or
so in order to prevent the account from being deactivated; at least, that is
what Microsoft states when you sign up for the account. This means that even
if you use your mail client to access your account, every day, you must log-in
via the web every so often. Not a big deal, so long as you remember to do it.
The only way to prevent this, along with removing any unsolicited ads, is to
either sign up for, or, upgrade to a paid Outlook.com email account. I believe
the cost is around $20 a year. Personally, I think it is well worth the money
but there may be some who disagree.

Personally, aside from using one's own hosted email server, complete with SSL
certificates, the only two email providers that I trust, in terms of data
integrity and privacy are Apple and Microsoft.

Just some proverbial food for thought.

Mark

HI Mark,
While I greatly appreciate this, if I have to go through all that, just to
create an email account, forget it LOL! Smile! What is a rescue email
address? Apple already has my current email address, if that is what you mean.
When I was trying to create the new account, I had to enter my Apple id, as
well as my password, one might think that should be enough though, but I guess
not. I wonder why I wasn't asked for all this information during the set up
process though. I did do some searching online, and I did see from an Apple
web site that some people have been getting the same message I get when trying
to create a new account, and according to the Apple site, this has been going
on since 2012. Matter of fact, one suggestion I got was to turn off and back
on the date and time feature in settings, and power off and back on the phone,
so I did that, but no go either! Another suggestion was to sign out of iCloud
and sign back in, power off the phone, and power back on, and go back to the
mail, and my new iCloud email would be there. So, if I was to sign out of
iCloud, then I would have to sign back in, enter my Apple id, enter my
password, enter my security code, turn several phone features back on, that I
already had on! LOL! I'm just wondering if all this is even worth it!
Thank you so much though, but if I have to do all this, oh, it's not going to
happen! I will just stick with Outlook.com or my Gmail! Smile!

2019-06-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ed,

There are 2 possibilities here:
1. It’s user error and he’s just got something messed up
2. There is an actual issue with the phone
Solution:
Make an appointment at an Apple Store and get them to help him fix it
(hopefully he lives somewhere near an Apple Store). If not he either has to see
if they can help him over the phone or maybe a sighted person who knows at
least a bit about iPhones can try to help him.

No, I have a ten r and thankfully, I have not experienced any of that. I have
not heard of anyone else who has either, which doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

RE: Creating A Brand New Email iCloud account Question Please.

2019-06-26 Thread M. Taylor

HI Mark,
While I greatly appreciate this, if I have to go through all that, just to
create an email account, forget it LOL!
Smile!

Hello Janet,

You know, in order to create a new iCloud email address, you must enter a
rescue email address. Once done, in order to proceed, you must open the
verification email that was sent to your rescue email address and activate the
embedded link.

Also, I believe you must verify that you are a real person by solveing either a
graphic or audio catcha.

I created 3 new Apple IDs last week and I think that is how I did it.

Last week seems so long ago. (smile).

Now if you are simply wanting to add an alias to an already existing account,
that is something else.

Issues with 10R

2019-06-26 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi,

I have a friend that has a 10R iPhone. He said he cannot get on iCloud, he
said he cannot dictate with VO on. And numerous other issues. He said he has
contacted Apple disability and they check out the phone and was unable to
fix it. Another person from Apple was going to contact him to see if he can
solve the issue. I assume Apple tried to restore the iPhone but not being
able to connect to iCloud that was not available to them. Of course this is
what I kind of understood from this friend who owns the phone. So my
question is has anyone who owns a 10 R had any issues with their iPhone like
this?

Again I am getting this info second hand and I do not know how much my

I think it’s not a problem if you turn the phone off although a car in the sun

After you select your Airprint printer just use the page range button.
It shows you all pages and you have a “From” picker and a “To” picker.
If you want to print only page 4 out of 7, set the From picker to 4 and the To

me.  Voiceover stated;  Your iPhone is too hot and won't work until it
cools off, or something like that.  So, I took the phone out of its
Otterbox holster and held it in front of the AC vent for several
minutes and it finally cooled off enough to work.  Whoa boy, it
doesn't seem to have suffered any damage, what a relief!  I've been
using cell phones for damn near 30 years and I've never had a phone
not work because it had gotten too warm!  Anyways, I would say it had
probably gotten no more than 110º in the car being we had parked in
the shade and the phone was not in any direct sunlight.  Well, I'll
never leave my phone in the car again! LOL
Just wanted to give y'all the heads-up to say just take your phone
with you so this does not happen to you.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go dodgers!
If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished!

Re: ring tones

2019-06-26 Thread Richard Turner
iTunes hasn't used the sync method for ringtones since iOS 12 I think.
You connect your phone to the computer, open iTunes and select your phone when
the button shows up.
Tab to the list of items where it defaults to summary, and arrow down to tones.
tab over to the list of tones.
Now, using File explorer or whatever it is on a mac, and select your ringtone
files, that should be m4r format and I guess 30 seconds or less in length, copy
it, alt-tab to itunes and paste and you should hear the tones that indicate
iTunes has done something.
The tone should now be on your phone.
I'm sure there are more clear directions out there, but that gets the idea
across I hope.
HTH,
Richard

I have created more than 100 ringtones and I have three that will not
show up in iTunes after transferring. I will try importing the MP3
files into GB. I had more. I re-saved them as m4r files and a number
of them then transferred to the iPhone.

Re: ReSetting Up an iPad Without Sight?

2019-06-26 Thread Richard Turner

If it was setup at one point and the triple click home for VoiceOver is not
available, and if Siri is not available, the only way I have done it
independently is to connect it to a computer running iTunes, select it when it
comes up, assuming you can get beyond the two factor authentication; and then
tab a whole lot to setup accessibility and turn on VoiceOver.
Or, use your phone with Be My Eyes and have someone walk you through turning on
VoiceOver through settings.

ReSetting Up an iPad Without Sight?

2019-06-26 Thread dani pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I have my Mom's iPad, which she says is giving her a message that it's
not set up. She hasn't used it for a while and wants to use it again.
It's got to be at least four years old.

Is there a way to independently turn on VO and put in all the
necessary info on my own, without sight? or do I need to borrow
working eyes?

Thanks,
Dani

RE: Sundial

2019-06-26 Thread Richard Turner
A little more from the App Store:
Sundial displays the sun and moon's rise/set cycle in a handy 24-hour ring. You
can create iOS notifications for common events, including sunrise, solar noon,
sunset, moonrise, lunar noon, lunar midnight, and moonset. Notification of full
moon, new moon, first quarter moon, and last quarter moon is also supported.
You can also create alerts for astronomical, nautical, and civil twilight start
and end, including dawn and dusk.

Sundial is great for runners, hikers, campers, walkers, boaters, sailors,
pilots, gardeners, farmers, photographers, film/tv production crew,
astronomers, and travelers of all kinds. Parents, want a reminder that twilight
is over and you need to get the kids inside? This is for you. Like to take your
dog on a walk 30 minutes for sunset? Sundial has you covered.

Sundial does not require an Internet connection to calculate rise & set times:
GPS and built-in algorithms are used.

You can enable one alert for free. Unlock unlimited alerts by making a one time
in-app purchase of Sundial Premium. Premium has other neat features including
options to synchronize your alerts to other devices using iCloud and disable
screen lock when Sundial is active (use it is a clock on your desk).

Includes a Today Widget for quick access on the iPhone and an Apple Watch app.
The Apple Watch app includes several complications for 38mm, 40mm, 42mm, and
44mm watches.

The iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch apps have voice over support for all
features. Reported times switch between AM/PM and 12/24 notation based on your
system settings.

Hello,

Not sure whether this has been posted before but I read about it on AppleVis.

Sundial is a very useful app that gives you information of sun and moon rise
and set among other things.

You can set alerts for notification of sun rise and set so a blind person knows
when it will be getting dark. I know that there are other apps that have
similar functionality but what sets this one apart is that you can have an
offset to your alerts. So for example you can configure the app to alert you a
quarter of an hour after sunset.

A sighted person would not necessarily turn their lights on at sunset as it
would not generally be dark then. You could choose to be alerted at the start
of civil twilight which would be a more sensible time to put the lights on and
would save electricity too.

Just a suggestion on how this flexible app can help us.

Anyone interested take a look at:

Checkout the Sundial iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch App
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sundial-sun-moon-times-alerts/id976460540

Hope this has been of interest and help to someone.

a Voice Dream Scanner story

2019-06-26 Thread Donald Raikes
Hello,
I had installed voice dream scanner about a month ago, and have found
it to be useful in various circumstances.

Yesterday I had to install some drive encryption software on my work
laptop. after rebooting the laptop today, I was stuck the drive
encryption software was asking for ... my username, password? who
knows and I am the only one home for the next few hours.

So I used voice dream scanner to read the laptop's screen and
discovered that I just needed to enter my password. Now I am back up
and running.

Kudos to the voice dream team for writing such an incredible app!

after I heard the tri tone I closed iTunes and disconnected the phone the
ringtone was gone on my phone as well. I haven't had time yet to see what

Yes they do but if you wish to then delete one you’re left with the

simply personal preference, I guess iCloud and Yahoo would also fall into that

Sieghard,

When one has a third-party email address set as the Apple ID, then notices and
such are sent to that email address. Now, if that particular email account is
hacked, unstable, or is accessible via POP3, only, one may want to change it.
This was definitely the case when all of those @yahoo.com email addresses got
hacked a few years back. In other instances, a person may have used the email
address associated with a company with which he is no longer doing business;
say switching wireless providers. In those instances, instead of using yet
another third-party email address, one may choose to use an Apple-owned domain.
Yes, one can setup aliases but that can be confusing for some.

HI Mark,
While I greatly appreciate this, if I have to go through all that, just to
create an email account, forget it LOL!

RE: Creating A Brand New Email iCloud account Question Please.

Yes, changing emails is a big job.
I like Outlook.com better since I prefer the more traditional folder structure
over the labels in Gmail and their All Mail box or whatever they call it. I
know this is probably better now, but I also find syncing of contacts and all
that is also just more of a matter where you can say "it just works". Overall I
always thought the Exchange Active Sync protocol; used by Outlook.com is better
than IMAP. Again, I don't want to start a big discussion, but that is just my
opinion and there was a time when IMAP did not automatically sync contacts and
calendars and you had to set that up separately, don't think that is necessary
any more, though.

HI Mark,
While I greatly appreciate this, if I have to go through all that, just to
create an email account, forget it LOL! Smile! What is a rescue email

Hi Robin,

I tried this with the latest version of iTunes and I was able to delete a
ringtone, but it would come back after a bit. When I deleted one and then after
I heard the tri tone I closed iTunes and disconnected the phone the ringtone
was gone on my phone as well. I haven't had time yet to see what happens if I
reconnect it.

Could you give an example?

Hello Janet,

You know, in order to create a new iCloud email address, you must enter a
rescue email address. Once done, in order to proceed, you must open the
verification email that was sent to your rescue email address and activate
the embedded link.

Also, I believe you must verify that you are a real person by solveing
either a graphic or audio catcha.

I created 3 new Apple IDs last week and I think that is how I did it.

I ended up doing a clean install, and just putting apps the way I like them,

Last I checked it was over 6000, a great friend who I exchange media with

Has anyone used the new iCloud for Windows update? If so, is it any more
accessible than previous versions?
Could you give an example?

It’s personal preference. They both can setup mail sorting rules, they are
both accessible threw apple mail, gmail’s website is accessible on both Mac and
PC, although windows 10 just got an update that may work better, I don’t know
cause I use my iPadPro for everything. The only other difference I think is
with iCloud you can create 3 additional email addresses called alias’s. Other
than that they are pretty even. JMO

Yes! When you create a new icloud you write only the part before @, if not, you
will get an error.
