Reminders on watchOS 6

2019-09-22 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. I updated my Apple Watch Series 4 to watchOS 6 last night. I was
exploring this morning. I did find the Reminders app, but wasn't sure if this
is the same as the pill reminders function which was advertised in watchOS 6.
Can anyone tell me where I can set pill reminders in the new OS?

Thanks,

Re: Apple Watch tips

2019-09-22 Thread Chuck Dean
I started out with the series one Apple Watch when they first came out. I
didn’t think it was too bad until I got my series for about a year ago. The
difference is night and day! It is so much faster and so much better. I got the
Cellular model, so I can make calls and I don’t have to be tethered to my
iPhone. I use my watch a lot, but there’s days that I leave it at home. As I
said before, I’m kind of a gadget nuts so it’s one more toy in my toybox!
But I probably should point out, I do not think there is anything that I can do
on my Apple Watch, that I cannot do on my Apple phone. So it is a peripheral,
but not necessary.

Subject: About Optimize Battery Charging

Hi all,
Earlier this month, this topic was discussed. Below is information on optimize
battery charging from Apple.

With iOS 13, your iPhone learns from your daily charging habits to improve the
lifespan of your battery.

A battery’s lifespan is related to its chemical age, which is more than just
the length of time since the battery was assembled. A battery's chemical age
results from a complex combination of several factors, including temperature
history and charging pattern. All rechargeable batteries are consumable
components that become less effective as they chemically age. As lithium-ion
batteries chemically age, the amount of charge they can hold diminishes,
resulting in reduced battery life and reduced peak performance. Learn more
about iPhone battery and performance and
how to maximize battery performance and
lifespan.

iOS 13 uses Optimized Battery Charging to slow the rate of battery aging by
reducing the time that your iPhone spends fully charged. Your iPhone uses
on-device machine learning to understand your daily charging routine so that it
can wait until you need to use your iPhone to finish charging past 80 percent.*
Charging in this way reduces the wear on your battery and improves its
lifespan. Optimized Battery Charging is active only when your iPhone predicts
that it will be connected to a charger for a long period of time.

Optimized Battery charging is on by default when you set up your iPhone or
after updating to iOS 13. If you notice that your iPhone is often only
partially charged—for example, if you don’t charge your iPhone overnight—you
can go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and turn off Optimized Battery
Charging.

When optimized battery charging is active, a notification on the Lock screen
says when your iPhone will be fully charged. If you need to have your iPhone
fully charged sooner, touch and hold the notification and then tap Charge Now.

Re: Pocket Extension Not Showing Up

2019-09-22 Thread kelby carlson
I may have to just reset my phone to factory default at some point; there are a
number of very strange issues that have cropped up that haven't gone away no
matter what I've done.

Pocket does show up in Newsify, but not Safari. I installed Instapaper and that
did show up in Safari. So I assume it must be a Pocket issue.

RE: Exercise equipment and GymKit

2019-09-22 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
The only bluetooth enabled piece of workout equipment I currently own is my
Nautilus 618 treadmill. Mainly to sync my workouts with the Nautilus app and
Apple health. As far as actually manipulating the treadmill via my phone… It’s
still the various buttons on the machine itself.

I’ve got a Schwinn recumbent bike that I’ve had for going on 12 years and while
I’ve looked into some stationary bike upgrades with Bluetooth, I can’t say
there’s really been anything that’s jumped out at me. I’ll probably ride that
bad boy until it gives up the ghost.

I mean, there’s the Peloton line of equipment, but accessibility aside, it also
comes with a premium price tag as well as a monthly subscription.

Subject: Exercise equipment and GymKit

Hi,

My wife and I may be in the market for some sort of home gym equipment, most
likely a stationary bike to start with.

I am not in a big hurry with this and just thought I start checking into this
and what works or does not work with the Apple ecosystem since we both have
iPhones and Apple Watches, our new series 5 watches have shipped and I would
certainly give priority to any equipment which supports this as long as it is
also of good quality.

One quick Google search brought up an apple Insider article about GymKit which
was released 2 years ago, but while about 6 or 8 manufacturers are listed, the
article also says that this for now is only available in professional equipment
and is not available in home equipment. They mentioned one piece, can’t
remember if it was a stationary bike or Stairmaster, but they said something
about it costing $14,000 which is certainly beyond the budget of any normal
home user. Maybe if you are a multi-millionaire and you can afford a home with
a one or two thousand square foot home gym you could also afford to stock it
with equipment of that nature, but while I am prepared to pay a premium for a
premium piece of equipment which we would have for the next 10 or 15 years
there are limits.

Best regards,

Sieghard

RE: Pocket Extension Not Showing Up

2019-09-22 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
I'm on iOS 12.4.1 and am still using and have access to all the same VDR voices
I've purchased over the years. So don't know what to tell you.
There was in fact a VDr update this morning that specifically mentions iOS 13
compatibility and nothing about losing or the continued loss of voices.
I vaguely recall Winston the dev mentioning something about certain TTS's not
being available, but that had to do with the vendor side and not with ioS. I
think all that got cleared up so it ended up being nothing.
I'm a paid Pocket user and have always had access to the option in the share
sheet. I also use Lire and it shows up in every article there as well.

I tried reinstalling with no luck.

I didn't upgrade to iOS 12 because I use iOS voices in VoiceDream Reader, and
they are not suppose to work in iOS 12 or 13.

What was so much better? All of the features I read about didn't sound

iOS 12 ran much faster and more efficiently even on older hardware and
certainly in iOS 13 there are big accessibility improvements, there are always
security improvements, but that's neither here nor there with respect to your
issue.
Maybe try Apple Accessibility to see if they can help you figure out why it is
not working since it certainly sounds that Pocket supports older iOS versions.

Exercise equipment and GymKit

2019-09-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

They mentioned one piece, can't
remember if it was a stationary bike or Stairmaster, but they said something
about it costing $14,000 which is certainly beyond the budget of any normal

Best regards,
Sieghard

RE: Apple Watch tips

2019-09-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
What series of Apple Watch is he giving you? If it is a series 2 then you’ll be
in for a frustrating experience and it may turn you off newer and faster
devices. My wife and I have both a series 2 which we bought in the fall of 2016
after it came out. For my wife who is sighted it’s not too bad, but I find when
Voiceover is running it’s incredibly slow and sluggish. The other day we went
for a long walk and wanted to record it and she had started the work-out in
about 5 seconds and it took me maybe 30 by the time I switched to the watch
face where I have the Workout complication, then when I tapped it, it took
forever to load and I actually had to press the digital crown once since it
just seemed to hang, then try again until it finally came up and I could select
the workout.
We both ordered the new series 5 watches now and I am very curious to see how
much nicer the experience will be.

I never really wanted an Apple watch, still not sure. My son is getting the
new one and will give me his old one. I’m going to try it out. I’ll be using
it with Voice over. Any quick tips to get started would be appreciated to give
it a test run and see if I want to keep it. Thanks.

RE: Apple Watch tips

2019-09-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Apple Watch is largely a health and fitness device. Yes, you get
notifications and you can answer a call on it if your iPhone is charging
somewhere in the house and you are elsewhere or, if you have a cellular model,
you can make phone calls on it without your phone, but still the primary
benefits are for health and fitness.
Of course having access to the time via haptic feedback can also be nice and so
are complications about weather and home automation if you are into that
technology.
Chuck may find it efficient to type a message on the Apple Watch using
Flicktype, I certainly do not and I wonder if they are 20 people in the world
who do so on a regular bases, but to each their own 

And, also, I understand that Accessibilities will be on the main list in
Settings?

Where in settings will one go to get the feature for no calls to ring unless
they are in Contacts? I suppose that would be in Phone?

Best regards,

Hi all,
Earlier this month, this topic was discussed.

2019-09-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Here is the support article explaining how to enable it in iOS 13 as well as in
iOS 12 and earlier:
https://help.getpocket.com/article/919-enabling-the-pocket-share-extension-in-ios

If that doesn't work maybe you can try to delete the app entirely and reinstall
it.
Also, just out of curiocity, why are you not at least on iOS 12? Of course that
is now a mute question because if you try to update you would immediately get
iOS 13 and it might be better to wait until iOS 13.1 comes out in a couple of
days, but iOS 12 was so much better than iOS 11 and I have already seen at
least one or two app updates on my iPhone 8 mentioning that they are now
dropping support for iOS 11.

Sieghard

RE: Sonos one question

2019-09-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Before you sell your Alexa speakers you might want to call Sonos support and
make sure you understand all the features which do or do not work on a Sonos
speaker. As Robin said, calling and messaging are two, but you may want to make
sure they aren’t the only ones.
Drop In maybe another, when I just asked our Echo Dot in the bedroom to Drop in
to Bathroom Sonos it replied that Bathroom Sonos had not signed up for this,
not sure what this means, but we do use the Drop In feature. I have an Echo in
my office at work and since it’s signed up to the same Amazon account I can
even say “Drop In at the Living room and it opens basically an intercom
connection to the Echo in the living room at home and I can talk to my wife
this way.

Since I never use Alexa for messaging or calls, that is no loss for me. I have

Hi,
Yes you can but just be aware that some features such as Echo messaging and
calling only work on Amazon’s own devices. Other wise all functions should work
as advertised.

Can you continue to use Alexa on the Sonos one if you have no other Alexa

much better than the Amazon that I am thinking of selling the Amazon.

RE: accessible measuring app?

If your client wants a Bluetooth caliper now the ones from the website I gave

They do not have a bluetooth caliper yet, but maybe in about a year.
He is working on a protractor that should be ready in a few months.

Robin,

The Tape
King
is a talking tape measure from an Austrian company called CareTec. They also
make, I think, talking kitchen scales and canes.
The link will take you to their website which includes a manual for the product.
As for size, the Cobalt at least is not really all that much larger than a
large carpenters tape, I guess it is larger if you compare the length of the
tape since a similar sized quality tape which is non-talking probably has at
least a 25 foot tape and not only a 15 foot tape and you can get 15 foot tapes
which are more compact, but they also have a narrower, less rigid tape.
The point is that you can’t make a tape with tactile markings which gives you
1/16 inch accuracy, the click rule or Rotomatic is different since it’s tactile
in a way down to the half inch or 1 cm on the metric unit, but then the 1/16 or
1mm accuracy is achieved through the “clicks” on the click rule. These are
achieved by a spring-loaded pin producing an audible click which you can also
feel as you push the threaded rod in or out of the housing and the pin clicks
in place in each thread. With the Rotomatic the same is accomplished by turning
the stop along the threaded rod, each full, 360 degree turn is 1/16, a half
turn is 1/32 and a quarter turn is 1/64. Each unit has a lock screw so you can
lock the measurement you selected into place after you set it up, they are
very ingenious devices, extremely precise and very durable.
I typically use my click rule for doing “real” woodworking as in building
furniture, drawers, Shaker-style doors as you often find on kitchen cabinets
etc. Here real precision at least to the sixteenth of an inch is necessary.
If it’s more carpentry oriented like doing baseboard, door or window trim,
framing interior walls or if it involves measurements more than 5 or 6 feet
long I usually use the talking tape measure.
For very small measurements and machine setup like setting the table saw at a
certain distance from the blade and if said distance is no more than 3 to 6
inches I often use my setup blocks/bars which I described. Those are especially
handy for cutting say 2 ½, 2 ¾ or 3 inch wide strips of hardwood for the rails
and stiles on a panel door like a raised panel or Shaker-style cabinet door. I
just use the 1/2/3 inch block which is 3 inches long, 2 inches wide and 1 inch
thick, if I want 3 inches I use it as is in the proper direction, if I want 2 ½
inches I use it the other way and add a ½ inch block, if I want 2 ¾ inches I
use the 2 inch side and a ¾ inch block etc. My 15-block set goes down to a very
thin 1/32 inch block, then it has a 1/6 inch block, a 3/32 inch, an 1/8 inch
etc. I can use a combination of blocks to make up just about anything I want.
There are also digital measuring devices such as digital calipers or angle
blocks which are available with Bluetooth and where you can then use the iPhone
to obtain a spoken value.
Barry Wixey from Wixey
Tools
offers a digital Bluetooth angle cube and he also has a table saw fence setup
which when properly installed shows the distance from the fence to the blade on
a display. He is currently working on a Bluetooth module which would then send
the information to his app where it would be spoken.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi,

I believe Voice control is only available in U.S. English right now. Maybe
setting your region to U.S. would fix the problem. Of course, doing that might
create other problems, but you could try it temporarily to see.

Hi Arlene:

I just opened the PBS video app to find tonight’s episode five. Looks like the
powers that be have made tonight’s audio described version available only to
people who join PBS passport, which is only for people who donate to PBS.

This makes me furious!

Our local station won’t carry the audio description, and now we can’t even get
it on our phones.

This is obvious discrimination!

Apple Watch tips

2019-09-22 Thread 'Chuck Dean' via VIPhone
I like my Apple Watch because it keeps my iPhone safe.
I can check thyme, weather, emails, messages, stuck quotes, and news updates
without having to pull my iPhone out, reducing the chance of dropping it.

I can also open the garage and house doors, adjust the music I am listening,
and pay for most of the things I buy, all from my wrist!

And because I have FlickType installed on my iPhone, I can type messages
instead of having to dictate them, when I need privacy.
One other thing... Its cool.

Re: voice control problem

Hi,

I believe Voice control is only available in U.S. English right now. Maybe
setting your region to U.S. would fix the problem. Of course, doing that might
create other problems, but you could try it temporarily to see.

Best,
Anna

voice control problem

2019-09-22 Thread Fanus Buys
Hello list
I have an iPhone 7 and 3 gb free memory and the phone is connected to wifi.
When I turn voice control on I get a message "failed to download necessary
files". I notice that although the region setting shows South Africa and the
speech in VoiceOver settings is set to the SA vpoice, the language in the
Voice Control section still shows as "United States" and it seems that one
can not change this. Is this a common problem?

Re: country music dvds on PBS

2019-09-22 Thread Duane Steele
I think I responded to this thread some time last week. I had thought it would
be a good series. So I'd bought the season pass on iTunes. But then,
following a suggestion made on this list, I downloaded the PBS APP and the
first four episodes were available with audio description even without the PBS
Passport for supporting the local station. The reason the audio was described
is because my local station is WGBH in Boston which wouldn't dare not describe
because of the large blimd community here. Bottom line: audio description is
in the control of your local PBS channel. That’s really sad. But I think it’s
true.

Re: country music dvds on PBS

2019-09-22 Thread Holly

Re: Apple Watch tips

2019-09-22 Thread Feliciano Godoy
What model Apple Watch will be given to you? There are two buttons, when is
the Crown button. That one scrolls up or down. If you triple click that button,
it toggles voiceover. The watch will have to be reset it, this can be done by
going to the Apple Watch settings, general followed by reset. You will then
have to pair the watch to your phone.

turned on the program when it came on and listened for the audio on the TV to
catch up to where I was on my phone and started the phone app. You can start

Yes, it is the PBS video app that you need. You can look for Country music
and double tap on it, then it will bring up the different episodes and you can
start playing any of them whenever you want.

If you want to listen to the phone app at the same time you are watching the
show on your TV, you will have to try to start the app at the same time the
show starts, so that you will be synchronized with your TV. A little tricky,
but I got within a second or two which was fine.

Holly, I checked in settings concerning the audio description and it was
already on so that was good. I think I downloaded the right app this morning
from the app store, I got the pbs video app. I didn't seem to find just the pbs
app, but the pbs app, it doesn't seem to stream live. Anyway the first 4
episodes will be on my local channel during today and I'll go into the cox app
so I could hear it when it's on and see if the audio description works. I'm
almost thinking it won't since I had it on the other day when the documentary
was on and I didn't hear the audio description when I found that it was on, and
I don't know about the app right now or if I even have the right app. Thank you.

On your iPhone, go to settings, then accessibility, then down to the bottom of
the page to media. That is where you will find the audio description setting.
If it is off, turn it on with a double tap.

I listened to the PBS app on my phone last night while watching the TV. Had to
synchronize it, but got within a second or two, so worked well.

Re: country music dvds on PBS

2019-09-22 Thread Arlene
Thank you.

  Arlene:

On your iPhone, go to settings, then accessibility, then down to the bottom
of the page to media. That is where you will find the audio description
setting. If it is off, turn it on with a double tap.

I listened to the PBS app on my phone last night while watching the TV. Had
to synchronize it, but got within a second or two, so worked well.

Apple Watch tips

2019-09-22 Thread Tom Rash
I never really wanted an Apple watch, still not sure. My son is getting the
new one and will give me his old one. I'm going to try it out. I'll be
using it with Voice over. Any quick tips to get started would be
appreciated to give it a test run and see if I want to keep it. Thanks.

i have read in many places that IOS 13.1 will drop on Sept. 30th, but I know
someone who insists that it will actually drop next Tuesday, Sept. 24th. So
when is it?

Andy

Re: Small annoyance in braille screen input.

2019-09-22 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
You can turn on voice control in iOS 13 and then use tge commands “VoiceOver
next rotor setting” or “VoiceOver previous rotor setting” to move the rotor
round without having to touch the screen, if that helps!
