Re: Intercom for Sonos, HEOS ...

2022-08-10 Thread Donna Casteen
Janet, I used Alexa's Drop-In feature when I took my vacation to California.
Once I reached my friends home, I connected to her wifi. I would drop in
several times a day to listen for any unusual noises & our home door security
alarms. We use the Ring video camera, which connects to Alexa & security alarms
purchased from Home Depot. I like the drop in feature also, because I can drop
in on my kids while I'm running errands, by using public wifis..

Hi Richard, I looked up the app, and it's just says intercom for Sonos. However
whenever I clicked on it to share it with you, it did not let me connect to the
App Store. So I am assuming that the app is no longer available on the App
Store.

Richard, I find that you need to be close to the Wi-Fi router in order to use
it. That is part of the delay. It shouldn't be more than 10 seconds of a Joe
delay. And as far as the drop in thing, yeah that would work better if you were
away from home. I thought you guys were just wanting something to be able to
communicate throughout a property that might have the same Wi-Fi net work.

RE: Intercom for Sonos, HEOS ...

2022-08-10 Thread janet gross
Hello Sieghard and Richard,
I’m just now chiming in on this intercom, so if this has been answered already,
please forgive! Sieghard, you say you can be a mile away from home, and tell
Alexa drop in, can you see who is in your home, or is this just for talking?
If so, this could be a good security.

Yes, there are actually multiple apps which can turn a Sonos system into an
intercom, but this is not what I meant.
I was referring specifically to Alexa Drop-In which works between speakers like
the Echo Dot, Show and so on, but I am pretty sure it still does not work via
Sonos.
For me Drop-In via Alexa is a better system because it doesn’t only work just
when you are connected to your WiFi, I can sit in my office a mile away from my
house and say “Alexa, drop in to living room” and it instantly connects me with
our Alexa Show at home where I can then talk to my wife.

Re: Using Mail Drop

2022-08-10 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi,

Dropbox links work fine. I prefer Airdrop because it’s as simple as sending an
attachment, the file doesn’t need to live in a service like Dropbox or iCloud
taking up space, and it’s easy for the recipient to deal with as well.

Best,
Anna

WalkAssist is back in the app store!

2022-08-10 Thread Richard Turner
Greetings,

The WalkAssist app is now back in the app store and has some improvements for
newer phones where it had a slow response time. You may find you have to
redownload the app even if you have the old version still on your phone.

They are working on making it also work in Portrait mode.

Here is the description from the app store and the link.

Description

WalkAssist recognizes traffic related objects(crosswalk signal, crosswalk, and
traffic signals) and alerts you through voice alerts.
 Use it with a harness
for the best results. The voice will only work if your ringer is on. Note that
the current version only works in landscape mode on most devices(this will be
fixed soon in the next version). It is not a substitute for your orientation
and mobility skills. It does not replace you current mobility aid, but is
rather intended to act as an additional aid to enhance your orientation and
navigation skills.

Please be aware of your surroundings while using the app. It is your
responsibility to maintain your personal safety at all times while using
WalkAssist.

RE: Intercom for Sonos, HEOS ...

2022-08-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
For whatever it’s worth, I at one point had an app which I believe was called
Sonovid or something like that and the Intercom via Sonos did work quite well
but of course it was just announcement only because this was years ago when
most of my speakers didn’t even have microphones. But as for delay, it was not
really an issue, I could maybe hear a small amount of delay from when I spoke
to when I heard it via the speakers, but nothing too much to worry about.

As for Sonos not supporting Alexa Drop-In, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was
an Amazon restriction since I can’t imagine why Sonos wouldn’t want to offer
this if Amazon allowed it, just a guess though.

Sonos still has no support for the Alexa Drop-in service. That is really sad.

And, as you may have seen, my later note on this intercom for Sonos app points
out that the delay using this app is ridiculous at best.

The Drop-in with Alexa makes it a true intercom that is without any delay that
I’ve noticed.

RE: NFL audio on the iPhone

2022-08-10 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

The several seconds delay has been going on before digital technology was
thought of. I remember hearing of it in the 1970’s. If something happened that
the show didn’t want heard from a caller, the famous dump button was pressed,
and there would either be a few seconds of dead air, or a tone would be
broadcast to allow the delay system to be reset.

Now, nothing is really live on broadcast television, and this is true even on
local stations. One thing I used to do was set my clocks to when a network
broadcast started, and I remember the CBS television network broadcast a kind
of ding when it was exactly the top of the hour. It’s not done anymore, and
even if it were, it would be several seconds off. I noticed this change happen
when all TV over the air stations went digital. I wish I had a shortwave
receiver, because I’d like to find out how much a delay there is by comparing
their transmission to good old WWV.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

Kevin, that’s my understanding as well. If you have ever called a talk show
and they put u on hold, you will typically hear that what is coming from your
radio is delayed a few seconds from what you hear through your headset. Seems
like the delay happened shortly after janet jackson’s wardrobe malfunction
during the superbowl some years back.

Hi.

I remember going to a college basketball game a few years ago. I thought it
would be nice to take a radio with me to keep up with the action. It didn’t
work. There was about a fifteen second delay between the action and what was
heard on commercial radio. I wasn’t sure why, but this wasn’t an internet
stream. I heard the possible reason why this was done, and it’s to protect the
network from the FCC. If some unwanted words were said, with the way things
are, it can be bleeped out, thanks to that delay. It’s why there’s a few second

An Explanation For the Delay In Radio Streaming

We are going to try to explain the delay experienced in internet radio
streaming. The audio can be up to five minutes behind what comes out of the
original streaming source. For example, I hear the audio on my monitor speakers
in my home radio studio. I turn on a mobile device, internet radio or Bose Wave
radio in another room and the audio is about a minute or two or three behind
what's coming from the studio audio source. We will try to explain a reason
why. The following information was obtained from Quora.com.
The most noticeable difference between a radio station's broadcast signal and
its corresponding Internet stream or Internet only radio stations is a
significant delay. The same program is likely to come out of your computer
speakers as much as five minutes later than it comes out of your radio.
Surprisingly, technology accounts for only about 5% of the lag. The other 95%
is a result of arguments over paychecks. (Disclaimer: those numbers were
entirely made up.)
LATENCY: a billion little traffic jams
When I play a song on my radio station, it zooms out to every nearby radio at
the speed of light. But online, delivery is restricted to the speed of Internet
— a relatively pokey journey that starts when my song gets converted into a
package of networthy digits. That conversion takes a fraction of a second.
Before it gets to your iPad, my song will pass through scores of other network
devices that each hold it for additional fractions of seconds. And those tiny
delays start to pile up.
My favorite demonstration for guests: I can talk into my studio mic, which is
live on the radio — then turn on an Internet feed and hear what I just said

And radio stations knew they had a losing hand in this game. The law said that
the union performers were owed much more money if their voices were broadly

The solution was one software upgrade away. Stations were already using

SO THERE'S ROOM TO PLAY MORE MUSIC? Uh, no.
Problem solved. Ads created by SAG-AFTRA union members stayed exclusively on

Internet listeners would love it, this person said, and that might help this

Yes this is the app that I'm speaking of. I didn't know it could be used with
other speakers. Now here's how to figure out how that works. I'll have to play
with the app. I got it whenever it was free. I'm glad I got it whenever I did.

RE: NFL audio on the iPhone

2022-08-10 Thread Richard Turner
An Explanation For the Delay In Radio Streaming

* Link to the source is at the end.
*

My favorite demonstration for guests: I can talk into my studio mic, which is
live on the radio — then turn on an Internet feed and hear what I just said
sixty seconds earlier. In that amount of time, my radio voice has gone halfway
to Mars, while my Internet voice has only made a round-trip to Cincinnati by
way of Mountain View.

The world's most expensive machine is slower than light, and slightly faster
than yelling.

UNIONS: pay or don’t play

The biggest source of audio delay has nothing to do with technology, and
everything to do with paychecks. Traditionally, when actors were hired to be in
a commercial, the amount of money they got paid was roughly proportional to the
number of people the commercial was expected to reach. Small towns paid small
fees; national ad campaigns had big budgets and paid the fattest fees.
Voiceover artists and their agents dreamed of working up to big juicy global
endorsements.

Around the turn of the century, these actors had a wake-up call. Radio stations
were starting to put their shows on the Internet. Commercials that had been
created for single mid-sized cities were suddenly being played across the
country. But the actors weren't getting the big national-spot fees their union
had negotiated! Contracts were being violated. Lawsuits were threatened.

And radio stations knew they had a losing hand in this game. The law said that
the union performers were owed much more money if their voices were broadly
distributed. And where would that money come from? No station had yet figured
out how to make a dime out of streaming radio.

The solution was one software upgrade away. Stations were already using
computers to control playback of their audio. Developers created a feature that
split the programming into two or more feeds. One would go to the broadcast
transmitter, as always. The others would go to the Internet. And this new
software could block the commercials that were being played on the radio
station, instantly substituting different audio.

SO THERE'S ROOM TO PLAY MORE MUSIC? Uh, no.

Problem solved. Ads created by SAG-AFTRA union members stayed exclusively on
the radio, as before. As for the empty space left behind by the vanishing
commercials, someone suggested that it could be filled with more music.
Internet listeners would love it, this person said, and that might help this
new service catch on and become big.

That person was promptly fired.

Station owners realized that they could replace the legally questionable
commercials with other commercials. They could sell these online commercials
and create an entirely new stream of revenue that might have unlimited growth
potential. Because if there's anything consumers love, it's more commercials.

AND JUST HOW DOES THIS ANSWER THE ORIGINAL QUESTION?

Oh, right. The differences between broadcast and Internet streams. Well, in
practice, it shakes out like this:

*The Internet commercial breaks are always longer than the broadcast
radio breaks. It's basic math. The online commercial break can never be shorter
than the broadcast commercial break. You don't want to jump back to regular
programming before the regular program is there. But your Internet commercial
break CAN run longer. Listeners won't miss anything. The program gets stored in
a delay buffer, so it

Wait a minute, before you go advertising that you can't use the intercom
feature via a Sonos speaker, actually you can. There's an app called intercom,
that works for the Sonos speakers. So if you have an iPhone or an android, all
you have to do is open up that app, and you can make announcements all through
your house on your Sonos system.

If you want to use Alexa frequently I suggest you go ahead and buy an Echo
smart speaker. They are very inexpensive and will always be available when you
say "Alexa" where is if you use Alexa on an iPhone you do still have to first
open the Amazon Echo app. You can probably find plenty of 2nd or 3rd generation
Echo Dot speaker for $10 or $20, I have a few of them and even the older larger
ones which I really have to advertise and get rid of because we have Sonos
throughout the house and while you still can't use the Intercom feature via a
Sonos speaker, you can do anything else. For the living room we bought an Echo

speakers I have are just sitting in a box and I am sure that is true for many

Lisa, This is not true. The Amazon Alexa app can do Everything that an Alexa
device can do. I have an old iPhone, which has no cellular service. The phone
is connected to wifi only. I/we use the app ONLY to control smart lights & our

How to Scan a QR Code with the Camera App: Rita's iDevice Advice for August
8, 2022

Definitions: Bar Code, or QR code?
The main difference between barcodes and QR codes is one of physical
dimensions. Barcodes can be scanned in a line. This means that data is
limited to what can be placed in that one stretch of stripes. QR codes, on
the other hand, add another dimension from which information can be written
and scanned.
While a barcode only holds information in the horizontal direction, a QR
code does hold information in both horizontal and vertical directions. Due
to this, a QR code holds hundreds of times more information than a barcode.
Although both QR codes and barcodes serve the basic purpose of storing
information about a particular product or organization, there are some major
differences between them.
One of the biggest differences comes in terms of the differences between
their design or simply how they look.
Bar codes have been around for more than a few decades, QR codes have only
been a "trend" since the beginning of the last decade, thanks to the boom in
smartphone absorption among consumers. It seems that QR codes will remain
until the popularity of augmented reality produces a completely different
coding system.
Note: When running VoiceOver, perform a one finger double tap gesture when
the directions say to tap

QR codes usually appear as encoded black and white squares that, when
scanned, present more information on a topic in the form on a web-page,
contact information, video, etc.

Open the Settings app, and tap Camera.
Make sure Scan QR Codes is toggled on.
Open the Camera app.
Hold your phone over the QR code so that it's centered in the frame.
A banner notification will appear and tell you what the QR code opens and in
what app.
Tap on the notification if you want to open the QR code's link.

Note: You can add the "Code Scanner" to the Control Center for easier
access to scan QR codes. Go to Settings, Control Center and choose Code
Scanner to show up in the Control Center on your Apple iOS Device.

Show because we also have a Ring doorbell so all these 2nd and 3rd Echo
speakers I have are just sitting in a box and I am sure that is true for many
people.

Lisa, This is not true. The Amazon Alexa app can do Everything that an Alexa
device can do. I have an old iPhone, which has no cellular service. The phone
is connected to wifi only. I/we use the app ONLY to control smart lights & our
Ring security camera. The Only thing that I do Not use the app for is adding
items into my shopping cart & placing orders. I even make wifi calls using the
app. A stand alone Amazon Alexa device is not necessary.

RE: Using Mail Drop

2022-08-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Somebody doesn't have to be a Dropbox user in order for you to send them an
email with a link to download a large attachment.
All you have to do is save the file in your Dropbox, then right click on it and
select the option to "Copy Dropbox Link".
I usually add one additional step because by default if you send somebody the
link as it is the file opens instead of downloading so if you send them, for
example, a video file it would start playing.
If you were to paste the link into Notepad you would find that there is always
a 0 at the end of it and if you delete that 0 and replace it with a 1, then
copy the link again and paste it into an email the file would actually
automatically download to the downloads folder of whoever you send the email
to. Of course they still have to open the email and click on the link.

RE: help with Kings corner app please

2022-08-10 Thread MamaPeach
I got this from someone a long time ago, so I hope the game hasn't changed much
since I got this, but maybe it will help you.

In Kings corner you play against the computer and can set different levels,
easy-difficult.
It begins with in a square formation card spots and each corner is empty
awaiting a king.
The spots in between the corners are played much as you do in basic solitaire,
alternating red and black, adding these piles to the corners when they fit the
next spot on pile, once a king is down.
Objective of using up your cards, of which you get a new one each round across
the bottom of the screen.

Go to settings and then go to where it says messages and then go to the heading
that says message history and then you’ll see a button that you can toggle on
where you can actually delete after a certain amount of days or keep forever

Re: NFL audio on the iPhone

2022-08-10 Thread Gordon
Yes, I really don't know why they have such a lengthy delay. it could be
some type of contractual thing with the NFL where that broadcast Hass to
reach TV audiences and the flagship radio audiences before it can be pushed
out to SiriusXM listeners. i'll have to try tune in premium to see if they
have the long delay as well.

Hi Lisa,

When you send the file by Airdrop, the recipient gets a link they can use to

I hope that helps.

Yeah, I got into the streaming plans without the car radio, but I think I just
took the default, which is the Music and Entertainment plan.

One thing that I learned through the signing up for SiriusXM is that there is 2
platinum plans. The regular platinum plan which in addition to streaming, also
includes an actual radio like in a car or one you keep in your house, and the
platinum streaming plan, which only includes streaming. So I just ended up
calling them to make sure I got the right one.

That is good news, sounds like the way to go, download Alexa, which I'll do,
when we get moved.

You can order with the app, but be very careful that it is adding
the correct item to your cart.
Also, be careful when using your phone with the app listening or a
device listening, because if it hears your phone say something
like, I can add the roborock vacuum to your cart; you may find that
item is now in your cart.
It took a bit of work to get it out of the cart.

Carolyn, I haven't tried ordering from the app or adding items to
my cart. I do use the Alexa app to play games, play my music
playlist, search answers to questions, get the current/daily weather
 forecast etc.
