Congratulations Mary. You will be happy with your EcoBee3 light. Once you
become familiar with the layout of the Ecobee app structure, you will be able
to setup the heating and cooling temperatures for everyday of the week and
sleeping time temperature and day time as well. i think it was a stroke of luck

You must add your ecobee3 light to your Apple HomeKit for SIRI to recognize it. 
When I installed my Ecobee3 light thermostat i had to go to my account in the 
EcoBee App and select add to my home app. When I did that, the home app opened 
and asked me to scan the QR Code on the ecobee thermostat screen. I directed my 
phone camera towards the thermostat’s screen and slowly moved the phone around 
untill it saw the QR Code. After that, the home app will ask you to name this

I wouldn’t mind paying a subscription fee for an app I use very often. VDR is 
an app I use once or twice a year, for this reason it is not worth it to 
subscribe. However, the subscription fee business model for smart phones apps 
will eventually collapse. With the numbers of apps we need and frequently use 
on our smart devices is rapidly increasing, there will be a point when the 
total sum of monthly subscriptions expenses may exceed the financial 
affordability of an average income individual. In such a situation the majority 
of users with limited income will be cut off from the smart apps market.

Hello friends,
After updating my iPhone 14 Pro to iOS 17.2 I have begun to face a problem with 
notifications alerts. I can no longer get sound alerts at all when my phone 
screen is locked. I made sure that I turned on all the show on locked screen 
for all the notifications of  the appspps I want, but to no avail.
Did anyone else face this problem? If so, how did you folks deal with it? It is 
very frustrating to deal with it. I spent over two hours fiddling with the 
various notifications settings without any success.

I feel the same way. I changed my HVacs system few weeks ago. The new system 
came with ecobee3 lite thermostat. It is great to just order siri to set the

You need the "PhoneLink" app on a Windows 11 PC and the "Link to Windows" app 
on your iPhone.
PhoneLink should already be on your computer if it's updated to the latest 
Windows 11 version and Link to Windows of course has to be downloaded from the 
App Store on your iPhone, it does not work with an iPad (or at least not yet).

No Sieghard, they do not stop charging for the modem; they consider it renting. 
Cable TV and Internet here in my area in Maryland is very expensive. I used to 
pay around 146 dollars a month, even though I have my own modem, which saved me 
15 dollars a month. I canceled the cable TV and kept the internet. Now I am 
paying 90 a month with a 2 years contract. Thanks to my iPhone and iPad I can 
brouse tv programs and news using various apps without difficultes.

Hi Sieghard,
My provider charges 15 dollars a month for their modem. That adds up to 180 US 
dollars a year. I bought my NetGear Modem/router in 2015 for 140 dollars, but 
saved myself at least 1200 dollars in the last eight years. I will look into 
buying a modem and a router, but will not  let my provider steal my money. I am 
already paying.close to 100 dollars for the service each month.

Since you mentioned the Mesh Linksys router, i am curious if Linksys has a 
modem/wireless router combo that supports Wi-Fi 6E. I am trying to slowly make 
my home a smart home based on the Apple Home Kit. This requires a very fast 
router for faster responses from the smart home accessories. If you have any 
info, please share.

I’m attempting to delete some apps never used from the growing list on my 
iPhone 13 Mini running iOS 16.5. I keep the apps I use often on multiple home 
screens but the ones seldom used are only located in the App Library listing 
found after the home screens. I like to place the App Library in an 
alphabetized listing in order to find the ones to delete as opposed to using 
Apple’s category listings. However, I am unable to enter Edit mode when using 
the alphabetize listing and can only invoke drag requiring me to first drag the 
app to be removed to a home screen where I can then invoke Edit mode and delete 
it. This seems to be a major design flaw so I’m wondering if I’m missing a 
better way to delete an app located only in the App Library.

Many thanks if others can confirm what I’m experiencing and offer a quicker way 
to delete an app shown only in the App Library.

Thanks Mark. I did not get the point of having to install batteries before 
attaching to the base. Does that mean you have to take the thermostat off its 
base each time you need to change the battery? Does the app have a battery 
meter to let you know if the battery is weak?

Hi Mark,
You make a very important point. The Home Pod or Home Pod Mini need very 
expensive external accessories to use as home guards. On top of that, the 
speakers themselves are two or three times more expensive than third or fourth 
generation echo dot. But because I live in a house, I needed a more reliable 
security sensors than a listening speaker.

I do not have any Alexa accessories to know what you are referring to 
exactly. However, it sounds to me that it is similar to the apple home 
kit. With the Apple home kit you can do a lot of the things you 
describe, provided that you have the accessories needed. With the apple 
home kit you can do automation to be notified when the motion sensor 
detects motion, and you will be able to automate a sound alarm to play a 
siren alarm if the windows or doors are opened, provided that you put 
contact sensors on the doors and windows. You can also make an 
automation to turn up or down the heat when the temperature sensor 
reaches a certain degree. You can do an automation to shutdown the water 
if the water leek sensor detects any water leak.


The problem is that the apple home kit compatible sensors are generally 
more expensive than the Alexa compatible accessories. If you have smart 
lights installed in your home, you can ask Siri to turn them on or off 
or change the light colors.



In my home, I have contact sensors on all of my windows, and I have 
motion sensors in the ground floor. All of them have automation to sound

If you own an Amazon Echo, you can protect your home with a feature called
Alexa Guard. When this option is enabled, Alexa will send you notifications
if your Echo detects certain sounds-like smoke alarms or breaking glass-and
will then let you listen to any sounds that raised the red flag.
With connected smart lights, Alexa Guard can also turn the lights on and off
to make it seem as if someone is home. While the free version of Alexa Guard
can't actually contact emergency services in the event of an emergency,
Smart Alerts can be sent to certain smart home security system providers,
such as Ring and ADT.

Alexa Guard is compatible with the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and
Echo Studio. If you want your Echo to detect the sounds of smoke alarms or
carbon monoxide detectors, you will need alarms capable of producing audible
tones.

The Echo device must also be positioned close enough to the alarm that the
sound can be detected. Amazon recommends testing this out by positioning
your Echo and then pressing the test button on your alarm and seeing if
Alexa Guard detects the sound.

Set Up Alexa Guard
  
Before you can enable Alexa Guard, you must make sure you've added at least

one Echo device to your account, which you do through the Alexa app. After
that's done, open the app on your device and tap the More icon. Go to
Settings > Guard and select the Set Up Sound Detection button.
  
Make sure the switches for Smoke & CO Alarm Sounds and Glass Break are

enabled, assuming you want Guard to alert you to the sound of either event.
Tap Confirm, and all your supported Echo devices will be selected for sound
detection. Tap OK and a confirmation screen tells you that Guard is set up
and ready to use.
  
You can now activate Guard a few ways. At the Guard screen in the Alexa app,

tap the Home button to change it to Away. Otherwise, say "Alexa, I'm
leaving." Alexa says goodbye and tells you that Guard has been activated.
  
If Alexa Guard detects the sound of breaking glass or an alarm, you'll

I remember the days when one needed to go to a phone store to have them cut the 
full size sim card to the Nano sim size. My first experience was in 2012 in 
Jordan. When the store tech told me he is going to cut the sim card, I got very 
nervous.somehow I thought that he may screw up things.
But truthfully, my experience with using an e-sim for the last three years is 
very positive. When I setup my 14 pro last night I was nervous that the 
transfer of the e-sim from my old phone to the new one may fail, and thus I 
will have no phone service to call the help and support number. Then I was 
happily surprised by the ease the e-sim transfer went.

I followed this thread with interest, because I travel overseas frequently 
enough to be concerned about the lack of physical sim tray in iPhone 14 series 
sold in the US. Each time I travel to another country I buy a local sim 
specific to the country I am visiting. Usually it takes less than two minutes 
to replace my american with the local sim and start using a local number. 
Nevertheless, I ordered iPhone 14 Pro and just received it this evening. For 
the last three years I have been using an ESIM on my XR in order to keep my 
physical sim tray free for the time of travel overseas. 
Setting up my new phone was very easy and surprisingly, the automatic transfer 
of my e-sim from my XR to my 14 Pro went very smoothly. For the time being, I 
will keep my XR saved for travel overseas, just in case I found it difficult to 
get e-sims in other countries, and I recommend to any of you who travel 
frequently overseas to keep your old phones for this purpose if you upgrade to 
series 14.

Thanks to all of you who replied to my question. You really made it easier for 
me to decide. I went ahead and ordered series seven 45 mlm GPS and celular. 
They are on sale at Target for 379.99 which is 150 dollars cheaper than series 
8.
I just thought I would hold on before I should invest on the latest series, 
because I did not find the series 8 enhancement are that important to me. As 
Mary Otten said, when significant enhancements to the Apple watch features like 
blood sugar sensor or blood pressure monitor or real thermometer are 
implemented, I will be tempted to spend more.
While at it, is there an Apple watch email list I can join to ask questions.

Thanks Kevin,
The decision I have to make is whether to buy series 7 GPS and celular for 350 
dollars, or buy series 8 GPS and celular for 500. We are talking about 150 
dollars differance. If the main differance is the temprature sensor, it is not 
worth 150 dollars to me. It is a feature with no use to me. It is a handy 
feature useful to women who want to monitor their cycle and ovulation if they 
want to get pregnant.

What are the advantages of buying Apple Watch series 8 over series 7?

I have never owned an Apple Watch, but have been flirting with the idea for 
quite sometime. I noticed that the prices of Apple Watches series 7 have gone 
down significantly after the release of series 8. That is the reason of why I 
like to know the advantages of buying series 8 over series 7, and whether 
paying 150 dollars more for getting Apple Watch 8  is worth it.

I can understand your reservations. I thought about what you said but found the 
alternative very expensive.  Buying MagSafe wireless power banks  are very 
expensive. That is the only choice that does not tie you to a wall outlet as 
you charge your device.

I went ahead and ordered iPhone 14 Pro, which I expect to get in 3 weeks. Now I 
am thinking of buying two accessories for it. Here where I need your 
recommendations based on first hand experience.
First, I need advice on getting asolid and powerful fast magsafe wireless 
charger.
Second, i need advice on getting a good magsafe compatible protective case. I 
do not like the bulky type and I prefer the transparent ones.
Any recommendations will be appreciated.

A friend of mine using iPhone 8 had the same problem after updating to iOS 16. 
We solved the problem by deleting the voices and reinstalling them again. That 
took care of the voice over problem not talking.

How useful to blind users is the Lidar sensor?

I can imagine that the Lidar sensor on the iPhone has great accessibility 
potentials. If there is any reason for me to have the urge to upgrade from XR 
to 14 pro is to have lidar on my phone. For those of you who have phones with 
lidar, how useful this has been so far? I am very curious.
I hope to hear your opinions on the subject.

Does iPhone 14 have Lidar capability?

presentation on wednesday. I have Xr, and the only insentive for me to upgrade

I downloaded the nest app few months ago and it seemed accessible to me. 
However, I do not have a nest thermostat to pair it with and try. At any rate, 
you could probably buy the google home speaker and use google assist to manage

True, except that if the sighted person knows how to turn voice over off with 
the side button three clicks, or familiar with the ability of siri to turn 
voice over on or off, the screen curtain becomes useless. Even with the screen 
curtain on, the minute you turn voice over off, the screen immediately lights 
up.

I used face id for less than one month, then I decided to switch back to 
setting a code because I believe it is much safer. I use my phone for a lot of 
financial transactions, including banking, shopping, stocks etc… If a thief got 
hold of my iPhone, all of what he needs to do is to direct the camera at my 
face, after that he will have full access to my life.

I think you are not seeing the edit button because you have a lot on todays 
screen. I have the same issue both on my iPad and my iPhone.
Here how I was able to reach the edit button. On today’s screen I swiped up 
with three fingers until the edit button appeared on the lower right corner of 
my screen. Swiping right with one finger did not do it for me. It simply put me 
at the end of page one of today’s screen. I found the edit button at the end of 
page two of Today’s screen which happened to be page two.

That makes sense, but no matter what I do I don’t find the edit button. If I 
flick right this morning I end up at Mail, which is an app I’ve used today. The 
phone simply goes “bonk.” I’ve tried both flicking right and a four-finger 
single tap near the bottom of the screen. Nie gesture gets to any kind of an 
edit field. I have tried re-booting my phone but nothing changes.
Maybe I should call Apple Accessibility. Thanks anyway. I do understand how it 
should work, but it doesn’t.

Your problem is that  you are going  into Edit mode in the search field and at 
that point a 4-finger single tap on the bottonm half of the screen will take 
you to the last element on the screen which would be the dictate button on the 
keyboard.

Don't double tap on that search field, just go to the Today View and do a 
4-finger tap near the bottom of the screen or just continue to flick right 
until you get to the very bottom and you find the Edit d button I mentioned. 
Now double tap, then go again to the very end by flicking right a lot or again 
use the 4-finger tap and you find the customize button.
Once you activate customize you get to choose from all the options and you can 
add items to the Today View, remove others which are already there if you don't 
want them and reorder what is showing the way you want.

Hi Richard and all.  Still having issues with the today screen.  From the home

hearing aid batteries charge, and iphone 13 mini and it’s battery charge. I 
really want to move my apple news and my weather widget to the today view.  I 
am running IOS 15.2 on my 13 mini. This is getting personal and I refuse to be 
defeated by this cute little phone.  Sorry for the continued questions.  It’s 
probably something very basic I’m missing. If you think this is not appropriate

You probably could get a better explanation of the Today screen on Apple's 
site; but I think of it as a place to store widgets you don't want taking up 
home screen space.
Once you are on the Today screen, a 4 finger tap at the bottom should put you

Well, I bought both SuperSense and envision at around the same time, over a 
year ago. Both were on sale for a life subscription. At the time Supersense 
could not OCR Arabic language image pdf files, while envision did a fantastic 
job on such files. With time I became dependant on envision and even forgot 
that I bought Supersense. Now, Supersense can do Arabic language image pdf 
files, but the quality of the OCR on these files is not as great as envision. 
For the instant use of short text, as it may be called, Seeing AI does a better 
job than both Envision and Supersense. That is why I do not use SuperSense that 
often, if any.

Seeing AI recognizes stuff on the TV screen too.
Now, the built-in camera on iPhones recognizes tons of text on the fly plus QR 
codes on the TV, etc.

It does have some bar codes that Seeing AI doesn’t have, and for me, that is 
the one area that keeps it in my toolbox.

I would use it more if it wasn’t for that damn auto scanning it insists on 
doing instead of waiting until I am ready to scan.

thinks it knows the mode you want.  There should be an option to turn the auto 
start off.  If you want to choose a different mode it is automatically trying 
to use the last mode you used.  I say it should be an option to turn this off

detection this hasn’t  been added.  So its probably closer to 2 stars versus 3 
stars.

I have my American number active on the e-sim of my iPhone. This way I
have the physical nano sim card tray available for travel. Since I
usually travel to more than one country, I find this very convenient.
When I am in a European country I insert in the tray a sim card from
that European country. If I am visiting the Middle East, I put in the
tray the sim card of the Middle Eastern country I am visiting. It is
important to remember that it is much easier to buy a physical card than
to activate an e-sim card. The e-sim has to be ordered ahead of time and
then later be activated by calling customer's service of the phone
provider, while the physical sim can be purchased from any phone store.

I personally think it's probably safer to switch your main provider to
eSIM unless you know for sure the local provider where you are going
will have eSIM vouchers. If so then it is probably just as easy to get
the eSIM from the local provider when you travel. For me when I go to
the Philippines I know that I can always get a SIM card, not so sure
about eSIM, but then I haven't really looked into it.

Not all foreign providers have e-sim capabilities. In theory you can. Ask your 
foreign provider if they implemented the e-sim technology on their network.

yYes, they can be from two different providers, and from two different 
countries. You do not need to give your phone to anyone to activate an 
e-sim. My provider is AT I called them and asked them to send me an 
esim in the mail. When I received it, I scanned the code and I called 
the customers service and they asked me some questions related to my 
IMEI of my phone and few other pieces of information you can find under 
settings general and about. Within few minutes my esim was active and I 
threw away the AT physical sim card. From that moment, my physical sim 
tray was empty. Any time I travel to any country, I insert a physical 
sim card of a local number into the sim card tray of my phone, and 
restart the phone.That is simply how it works.

I have a similar problem with my airpod pro. No matter which tip I used, they 
fell out of my ears. Finally I bought an around the neck connecter which I 
attach to the bottom of the stems so that when they fall I do not lose them.

I have followed so much discussions of different wireless air pods and 
wireless earphones on this list lately. However, I have not seen any 
mention of Beats Flex wireless earphones marketed by apple.  I just saw 
them listed under accessaries in the apple store. Apple claims that they 
have a 12 hours battery. The price is only 49.99. I am tempted to buy 
them to check them out.


Have any of you had any experience with the Beats Flex whireless 
earphones?  I am curious to hear more about them before I throw away 
fifty dollars.

My system is both a heating furnace and an air conditioner together. The
system runs on electricity. I suppose this should make it easier. I do
not know how many wiires extended from the furnace to the thermostat I
have, but I believe it should be four, two for the heat and two for the
Air conditioner. I do not like the idea of having my thermostat
connected to an outlet. In any case, I do not have any outlets close to
the thermostat area of my wall. I am leaning more and more to the nest
third generation because it does not need the C wire. I hope the nest
application is accessible enough on iOS.

One of the things that makes it difficult to decide is the fact that
I do not even if the wiring of my heating/cooling system has the
Common wire, usually referred to as the C wire. So far the only smart
thermostat I found which does not need the C wire is Nest Gen3, also
known as nest learning thermostat. However, I do not know how
accessible the nest app is. Do you have any experience with this app?

We have a Honeywell thermostat that uses the Total Connect
Comfort (tcc) app which is completely accessible.

The physical thermostat isn't something I would want to deal
with on my own, but one could mark it to adjust up or down.

So, the real question for me is, is the app they use accessible.

Thanks Richard. That really helps.

One of the things that makes it difficult to decide is the fact that I
do not even if the wiring of my heating/cooling system has the Common
wire, usually referred to as the C wire. So far the only smart
thermostat I found which does not need the C wire is Nest Gen3, also
known as nest learning thermostat. However, I do not know how accessible
the nest app is. Do you have any experience with this app? How
accessible is it?

The easiest way I know of is to tripple tab with one finger on the app
you want to delete, and then choose delete from among the options.

Hi Mitch,

Once you turn on Edit mode, delete is available. Also, when you
choose Remove for an app on a screen other than App Library, you have
the choices to remove it from your home screen or delete it completely.

FaceTime sound is horrible on iOS 15

Hello folks.
Have any of you noticed a major change in the way FaceTime sounds after 
updating to iOS 15? The voice of the other persons on the other side sounds as 
if they are talking inside a very large empty hall. I also sound to them as if 
I am talking inside a large empty room after I updated to fifteen, although 
they are still using 14.8. Is there a setting I must change to go back to the 
lovely normal sound of the familiar FaceTime.

I need to watch a couple of documentary films which have some parts in foreign 
languages. These foreign languages sections are translated to English in the 
subtitles. Is there a way of reading the subtitles with voice over? These 
documentaries are available on youtube, amazon, and apple tv. If subtitles are 
accessible on any of these platforms please let me know.
I truly appreciate any help or advice.

If you are referring to music recognition, you need to go to settings, control 
center, and go down the list and insert music recognition. After you do this, 
music recognition will appear anytime you invoke the control center gesture.

You could try using the music notification app or feature on an iPhone under

Call your cell phone provider and complain. It sounds that your cell service in 
your area is weak. I am with AT and have a similar problem. When I called to 
complain they admitted that their cell service is weak and advised me to turn 
on wifi calling. Put simply, att want to solve their problem by using the 
infrastructure of my internet service.

Have you tried to see if you can see them listed on the find my app which comes 
preinstalled on your iPhone, instead of trying to locate them in settings. If 
you deleted the find my app by mistake, you can redownload it from the appstore.

No you are not doing anything wrong. On iPads, once you go to settings, it 
lists all the categories on the left side of the screen. When you select one of 
the catagories or apps you want to modify its settings, the settings are listed 
on the right side of the screen. Since general is already selected, you will 
find all items under it listed on the right of the screen. One easy way to find 
them is to select headings in your rottor, and swipe once down, it will take 
you to that list of items.

mini. One it gives you thread support that is a huge plus. Two they do sound
good for their size. Are use them for background music like currently I have
