Re: IOS is complete crap with VoiceOver

2014-09-24 Thread Len Burns
I wouldn't go so far as saying it's a piece of crap, but what does concern me
has been a recent pattern of poor quality assurance. Some problems with iOS 7
were fixed, and some we just learn to live with. Apple has the appearance of a
company that is pushing things out the door entirely too quickly. When one does
that, there are always consequences. I am watching what's going on, and waiting
the moment before I update to iOS8.

Doing as David suggests is probably best, but it might also be the
case that your voice was turned off. Try a three finger double tap to
toggle the voice on and off.

Also, if you have the home button set as your VoiceOver short cut, try
a triple tap of the home button. Recycling VoiceOver helps me in
similar situations. Maybe you can use Siri to turn VoiceOver off and
 then back on as well.

I've seen a couple of posts now to where IOS 8 with it's VoiceOver
bugs is compared to blindness specific products or older smart phone
technologies, like Windows Mobile running Mobile Accessibility. IMHO,
one of the great things about Apple and their commitment to making
their main stream products accessible is that we get treated the same
as the rest of their main stream customers. I fear that if we lower
the bar with our expectations then we're no better off then when we
use those so called blind ghetto products that so many people are
quick to thumb their noses at. Let's give Apple credit where credit is
due, but let's just not roll over like blind Uncle Tom's being happy
with whatever accessibility Apple thinks we'll be content with.

Something similar occurred with iOS 7 when it first came out. Unlike

Re: Calendar Replacement

2014-04-08 Thread Len Burns
I have been using an app called Week Cal for about the last year and a half.
Things about it I find particularly useful or the ability to create templates
for common appointments, that I can have more alerts than the standard app will
give me, and that the increments for minutes can be set down to one minute
rather than five. For the record, it is not free. There are a couple of
unlabeled buttons now, and figuring out which calendar your accessing a given
moment can be slightly tricky. I use several different calendars, so for me
that can become an issue. All this said however, I'm still using it, and have
no plans to change soon.

RE: Features of Lire and Feeddler RSS News Readers

2013-07-09 Thread Len Burns
The caching definitely does slow things down, especially if you have a lot
of feeds. Because of this, I turn caching off and retrieve full text for
the articles of interest. This of course requires access to WIFI or a data
connection when one is reading.

Geoff, you're right: the caching of articles by Lire can be very slow
indeed.

I haven't used Feeddler's Download for offline reading option. Is
this perhaps some kind of article cache?

This is a bit of a late reply. However, for those wanting to know, one of
the key differences in the way Feeddler and Lire work is with regard to
caching. Lire caches full text of RSS articles. Feeddler does not.

I have moved back to primarily using Feeddler because of its integration
with web-based services such as TheOldreader. I am not completely
satisfied
with the way Feeddler works with Theoldreader, but I do prefer the ability
to access my feeds from a browser.

I became extremely unhappy with the way Lire was working on my iPhone 5.
It
was extremely sluggish when updating and caching to the point where it was
unusable. Even after articles were cached, it would sometimes take 30
seconds or so to open a folder/article. However, after following a tip
posted by someone here, I removed and reinstalled Lire and most of that
 sluggishness has been corrected!

I really love the way Lire works with VoiceOver. I also love the way
Feeddler works with agregators. And Feeddler is not too bad with
VoiceOver
 either.

I will probably continue to be slightly undecided.

that the characterization of pretty quickly is relative and
subjective. Would you say that the refresh and cache operations are
 considerably faster with Feeddler?

Hi Craig, I agree. The developer of the Lire app is incredible, and what
 you
hear with VoiceOver can be customised in great detail.

There are two reasons why I continue to use Feeddler primarily.

First, I find Lire takes a very long time to retrieve new content, and I
have a large number of feeds.

Second, Feeddler syncs with a bunch of cloud-based services. It formerly
used Google Reader, and I had apps on my Mac and PC that would also sync
with it. So if I read an article on one device, it would be marked as
 read
on all of them. I've not yet found apps for Mac and Windows that support
 any
of the new services Feeddler is supporting, but things are still shaking
down after the Google Reader shut-down so I'm sure that will all sort
 itself
 out in time.

responsive to the needs of VoiceOver users. I don't know of a single

RE: A way of signing electronically, perhaps?

Generally, moving the signature would result in the signature reporting as
invalid. Part of what is certified is that the document has not been
altered after signing. There are ways to accomplish this with Acrobat

What about placing the signature anywhere on the form, and the

New FaceBook App for iPhone Released Today

2013-02-22 Thread Len Burns
All,

There is a new version of the FaceBook app out. I am still testing; thus
far the results are mixed. The timestamp issue, where you could not tell
the age of a post, is resolved. Some posts seem to do nothing when double
tapped one moment, and several minutes later open a new screen. I am still
working out a hypothesis as to why. When I first opened the new version, I
could only view 11 posts; scrolling down did not work. The old double tap
hold and swipe up with one finger did not work either. Then, for no
apparent reason, the scrolling began to function normally.

Edit boxes are at times behaving as I would expect, and at other times I can
write or dictate text but it is not possible to edit. When I attempt to
delete a character, I discover that I was placed at the end of the text and
am deleting in the incorrect location. At other times, editing works as it
does in most edit fields. I am interested in the experiences of others.

Adding just a little, there are also fun sound effects that trigger when you
guess correctly, incorrectly, successfully guess a word or run out of tries.
I also usually turn hints on because with them enabled, when you touch the

There are a few things that are not accessible, but nothing that prevents

Hi!!

I am sorry for saying that. OK. It's a game where you solve words
basically. It's like the app gives me a bunch of letters, for
example, n f b a o D e j a n o
than I have to make a word out of those letters (four letter or more
word not a proper noun) and then I send it to you. It's going to give
you only one letter on the word I sent you and other would be question
mark at least the voiceover announces question mark. Let's say, if I
made a word, Bond out of those letters and then I hit play, it's
going to send that to you. It may be set up like this: question? O
question? question?
So, then you have like six or something strikes. It gives you the
whole alphabet and you double tap on the letter you think is true.
Voiceover will announce played if it's used and strike if it's not
used. Do you have that game? I could invite you and play with you to
tell you more about it if my explanation doesn't make any sense.
Thanks! I am sorry I said that clutters the list.

It seems to me that a central factor in this discussion is whether and
how much people are accustomed toinputing via a device such as a braille
display. I could probably adjust to the positioning, but because I
input a lot these days with the Focus, I am accustomed to the lay out.
I also am waiting until grade 2 is supported. Because I have written
braille since I was knee high, it takes a great deal of focus for me to
write accurately in grade 1. In grade 2 I write rapidly, often more so
than on a qwerty.

VoiceOver Sounds with a Braille Display

2013-01-18 Thread Len Burns
All,

I think I already know the answer to this, but figured it was time to
consult those more wise than I. :) When using a display with an iPhone
4S running IOS 6.01, is there any way other than muting the phone to
silence the sounds made by VO when speech is turned off? If there is a
way, I am not finding it. Thanks much!

Hi Mary,

I am turning off speech in the same manner, space+m. I am testing here

screen I hear the characteristic click made by VoiceOver when speech is
on as well as the sound made when I change to the next line. I wonder

I cannot address BlindSquare, but I can tell you that MotionX is

I use Motion X GPSDrive and for walking, I now use BlindSquare. I recently
discovered a really neat feature with Motion X. I created a route to my
cousin's last Thursday and then created a route to the train station to pick
up our son. I had the usual clear route option, but I noticed I could Add A
Stop to the original route. What that meant was that we went to the train
station via Motion X first and then proceeded to my cousin's house, all
within one route instead of two separate routes. A really cool feature!
Motion X is easy to use, totally accessible and incredibly accurate for
 vehicular travel.

Both apps can run in the background when a route is running, so you can also

I usually just use Ariadne because it has a feature which automatically
announces the updated address every 40 seconds or so. This is often all I
need now that I have trained myself to navigate via street address rather
than cross streets. One of my primary uses is on the bus. I have learned the
nearby addresses for the stop I require. When the announced address gets
close, I ring the bell and exit at my desired bus stop. In most cases, I no
longer need to ask the bus driver for my stop to be announced.

I also use Ariadne when looking for an address in an area that is
familiar. With Ariadne, I just activate the app and activate the start
monitor button. I can even activate Ariadne for a quick check of my current
location and then close it again.

Hello Grant, and anyone else interested, my apologies for not responding
sooner. The message slipped through the cracks and I just now found it
again. The short answer to your question is yes. Meaning that for me,
what I have works superbly and I don't feel like I'm lacking in what I
 have.

Now, the long answer. I think it highly depends on what the user is
expecting from an accessible GPS solution. I know the Sendero products
well, and in fact, helped to develop the initial Sendero GPS user
interface for the Braille Sense from HIMS when they started using
Sendero. For me personally, using a combination of Navigon and Ariadne,
or Waze and Ariadne, is enough. In the case of Ariadne, I get to know
what street I'm on, the addresses I'm walking or driving by, the zip
code, the direction I'm moving in, and the intersection when I get to
it. Of course with an app like Navigon I have my turn by turn direction
list. I can also of course use any other app of choice for this if I
want. Mapquest, MotionX Drive, ETC. Even when I was working with Sendero
to get the Braille Sense user interface and featureset working right, I
didn't use all the features available unless I was testing them to make
sure they work. For example, I don't need to always know if the
intersection I'm coming up to is a t intersection, or if it dead ends. I
don't need constant announcement of how close I am getting to the
upcoming intersection. I don't always need the street name announced as

Re: audio issues on iPhone5

Alex,

I have been experiencing similar issues with the 4S since I upgraded to
IOS6. It is very apparent in the Hanging with Friends game, in
interactions with Siri, and a number of other situations. Whereever I
encounter the issue, the pattern is similar to what you describe below.
It seems that VoiceOver is not sharing the audio system smoothly with
certain apps. While it is possible this will be resolved by app
updates, I am skeptical since it is occuring with built in software.
For example, when I instruct Siri to send an iMessage, unless I tap to
open the message screen or close Siri, I do not hear the sound usually
accompanying a send.

when I was putting the phone next to my ear, my lobe touched the screen

Re: vo talking during phone calls

2012-10-27 Thread Len Burns
David,

I have enough troubleshooting experience to have done the below as you
describe. And, VO still ends up on the time. I am not being highly
critical of Apple nor the phone, just stating an observation that I have
duplicated many times as have several others I know who are equally
careful. This has been true both in 5.1.1 and 6.0 with my 4S.

Yes, but the factor may be the person brushing the phone so lightly that they

will place the focus where the body part brushes the phone. All it takes is
the merest contact. The touch-screen is not pressure sensitive, it is contact
sensitive. Now, if you ensure that VO is not highlighting the call timer,
close the phone app, have your headset connected, use the button on the
headset chord to activate Siri, and voice-dial a number / contact, you will
have eliminated all possibilities of touching the screen inadvertently. If VO
starts reading the call timer then, you have definitely found a bug. VO
remains on the field it was last on when the call screen pops up. Using the
above method, I have never been able to cause the troubling behaviour.

automatically placing focus on the timer, then yes, that needs to be
addressed, however I would venture a guess, coming from a training point
of view, that more often than not, it's the person who accidentally
touches the timer. A good way it's been done, and it's happened to me is
when I was putting the phone next to my ear, my lobe touched the screen
in just the right place. I guess I have really big ears. Sure enough,
the timer started telling me all the length of the call. A simple touch
to somewhere else solved that problem.

another field either by touching a different area on the screen, or
using a right or left flick. If you have headphones on, the
 touch-screen always remains active.

To silence VO, you can either do a three-finger double-tap to mute
speech, or you can use a triple-tap of the home button to unload VO.
Just remember to use the same gesture when you are finished with your
call to get VO talking again.

Obviously this makes it very hard to hear the person on the other end

Any tips on how to get VO to stop talking while I am on a call would

First off, I don't use 1Password, so my comments might be off a bit. I
use LastPass and MyKeePass. I won't get into the details of those
password managers, but suffice it to say that I feel they are just as
good as 1Password. I simply tried those first and see no need to switch
to 1Password. So now onto the real reason why I'm writing.

It's more about security and what you put on Dropbox and what is safe
 and what isn't.

Many people feel it's ok to put whatever on Dropbox while others only
put non-secure stuff, and still others are somewhere in between.

What I do in regards to Dropbox is put files in it which I don't
particularly care if the Dropbox staff somehow gains access to them. I
know for a fact that Dropbox stores files on there even if you delete
them. How do I know this? I once erased a folder of 5 good byeello Len and
others. This app is a bit weird with the ui at times but is otherwise
accessible. It was 1 us dollar when I purchased it. of audio and
later needed it for a friend, and so I copied it back over. It had been
about 3 months since I had deleted them from Dropbox, yet when I copied
them over again, it didn't take hours to upload and update, it only took
a few minutes? Why is that? Because Dropbox already had a copy of those
files. I also know that if you have a file which is an exact copy of
someone else's file even if you are not sharing folders with that
person, Dropbox uses the same copy. This allows them to save on disc
space over all in the big picture. For example, if I download the iTunes
setup file for Windows and put it in my installs folder of Dropbox which
I only share with 5 people, and if 100 other people across the world
also have this same file in their own private or public space of
Dropbox, then Dropbox uses that one copy rather than multiple copies.
Some might feel this is a breach of security. I personally feel it's
 Dropbox using disc space wisely.

The one thing I don't do is put a text file of credit card or social
security numbers in Dropbox just for the convenience of having access to
those from my iPhone. Call me paranoid, but that's the way it is.
Instead, what I do is use Truecrypt. Truecrypt is a program which allows
you to create a file container of any size and put stuff in it. Think of
it like a virtual usb stick. So, I have a 10 Mb Truecrypt container
called KeepOut.tc. Yes, only 10 megs in size. I have this file in my
dropbox folder and when I want to review personal text files from any of
my computers, I simply mount this small 10 meg file and it becomes its
own drive. Like drive x maybe. I can then open files, copy files, add
files, do whatever I want in my little 10 meg virtual usb stick. When
I'm done, I unmount it, that's like using safely remove hardware. The
file is updated on Dropbox and closed up and secure again.

There is an iphone app which will open Truecrypt files and so if I want
access to this data from my iphone, then I simply do the same process
 from there.

Some would say this is too much work for security, but it's worth it to
me to take the extra seconds to open the Truecrypt file, look at it, and
then close it when I'm done.

I do a similar thing with all the documents in my documents folder of my
netbook and my pc where I back them up onto a Truecrypt volume and that
volume lives in Dropbox. So, it's like my own backup solution. I've
written batch files to automatically open the virtual file, copy the
changed files from my documents, and then close it. So, in the end it
doesn't take much time at all. I'm not the only one who does this
because there are various people who have blogged about it and who have
shared similar doings in terms of Dropbox, backups, and security.

Lastly, I mentioned KeePass as a password manager. This program is
available in many different platforms, iOS and Windows for example, and
can share the same database. So if I want to get access to a username
and password for something, I can use that. The password file itself is
encrypted, and so can safely live inside Dropbox where MyKeepass from
 iOS can read it.

Hope that helps, and hope you join the paranoia team.

Sound Choppiness

2012-09-20 Thread Len Burns
Last night I noticed that when I send an iMessage with Siri I was not
hearing the usual send sound. I verified that indeed this is working
when I send by double tapping the send button. I am also noticing that
Siri's voice is getting chopped in similar situations.

This afternoon I resumed my Hanging With Friends amusements and am
encountering some odd behavior. When I am solving a word and tap a
letter to make a guess, the usual sounds for success or failure are
almost inaudible. They are shortened and quieter than usual. I have
verified that this is not the case on a 4S without Voiceover running.
When I flick along the list of letters the sound is also choppy;
sometimes letters are missed. I can still play with a little
adjustment. I am not sure if I am spotting a bug or am running into a
resource issue with the 4S. Has any one encountered anything similar?
Thanks much.

Anyone going to take the plunge and see if it is accessible? They
claim a complete rebuild but no mension of accessibility.

Have they listened to the requests at last???

iPhone 4S Suddenly Seems to be Randomly Dropping of WIFI

2012-07-13 Thread Len Burns
All,

I believe I have read of this problem on this list before. I have had
my 4S since around the beginning of the year. Up until a week ago, I
have used between 20 and 30 megs of data/month. In the last week it has
begun sucking data. Specifically, it is sucking data during times when
it is feet from our WIFI router.

I called ATT this morning and followed that up with my own examination
of data sessions over the last week. I see the usual blips I expect
when I am out. I see substantial data transfers at times when the phone
and I were right here at home sweet home. No other devices in the house
are having problems with WIFI. The setup has not been touched in months.
I have been unable to catch the phone overtly dropping from WIFI, but
it clearly is doing so. For what it is worth, this is the second iPHone
4S on this account that has exhibited behavior similar to this in the
last week and a half. The other one was replaced yesterday by Apple.
For now, I have turned off cellular data to see if I can catch it in the
act of dropping from the network. I doubt this is going to yield useful
information, but there is little else I can do.

I am interested in the experiences of others with problems similar to
this and if/how the problem was finally resolved. Thanks much!

Regards,
-Len

Hey there. I just got this game and it's awesome. I also love playing
 cribbage.

I was wondering for those that have played it already as well, is there an
easier way t set it up? Meaning, the card and table layout, things like
 that.

Re: I-message issue

2012-07-11 Thread Len Burns
When this is intermittent, it often results from one or the other phone
falling off the network. Sometimes the drop is so brief that it is not
easily detected. A recent contact with ATT regarding a phone with this
behavior yielded such helpful responses as:
They do that sometimes.
In short, they don't really know. In this case the person involved does
not have a texting plan. So, when this occurs, she gets charged for a text.

Another possibility is the person you're exchanging messages with may

Re: Hanging with friends

2012-06-29 Thread Len Burns
Yes, you can clear it. You want the recall button. It appears in about
the middle of your playable letters when you are creating a word. I
cannot speak for others, but when I use recall I usually have to toggle
VO off and on for the screen to redraw. If I do not do this, the
letters continue to appear in on the board where I am composing. I do
not know to whom this bug belongs.

There are a few other similar nuances. Touching Strikes with hints on
will tell you how many strikes, chances, you have left to guess a word.
For this to work you must have hints turned on. The catch is that at
times the number is not updated when you miss a letter. To be sure you
must toggle VO. To me, these are small things. Over all it works very
well.

use the letters that they give you, you don't have the use of the
 whole alphabet.

Re: Hanging with friends

2012-06-24 Thread Len Burns
I enjoy this game a great deal because it is interactive in a way that
allows all of us to play when it is convenient. There are a few
VoiceOver quirks, but nothing that prevents me from playing a
competitive game with my friends! One of those quirks is that when you
are creating a word for your friend to guess, there is a recall button
that is found in the middle of the available letters. This allows you
to cancel your word and begin from scratch. At least on my iPhone 4S,
when I use this, VO does not always catch the screen update and
continues to display the letters as played. To resolve the issue I
tripple tap home twice to toggle VO off and then back on. This resolves
the problem. Very minor. My user on Hanging With Friends is LenFB if
any one would like to go a round.

To send a word, you just double tap the letters you want to create the

and you just choose the ones you want to form your word.
Your word will be displayed on the board, that is located in the middle

To guess the word sent by your friend, you have to choose from the
letters of the alphabet that will be located on the botton of the screen.
You will hear some questions mark on the board, they will indicate the
amount of letters that the word has and the last vowew of the word will
 be shown on the board.
For exemple, if the word is tape, you will get ???e on the board.

When you guess a letter and it is on the word, you will hear a different

Put it this way, if some one is close by yelling at you in a very loud
threatening voice, anything relying upon voice dial will be less than
reliable. The conditions with which one must function in an emergency
very widely.
If I am moving away from a danger rapidly, rapid walk slow run, I myself
doubt I would be able to get to my favorites with a cane in one hand and
the phone in the other, and do so quickly. This may be just me, but I
hope to never have a reason to try this.

At the end of this fyle type this:

Re: great iphone article

It is not adaptive tech that is responsible for blind kids growing up
unable to spell. It is a lack of braille literacy. You do not learn to
spell from an audio book.

I agree, but the statement about Dragon Dictation did seem out of place
to me. With all other apps, except for maybe Android itself, it provided
constructive criticism on what the app was missing. The author could
have easily left out the statement about Dragon Dictation, without
taking away from the article at all. I also don't buy into the
statements that devices which make things easier for us are also making
us dumber. I hear the same thing about sighted children, and it sounds a
bit to me like what every generation says about the next generation. If
something makes our lives easier in one area then we can challenge
ourselves, and maybe have more time to do it, in other areas. On

Good article. I didn't see anything wrong with it, the parts where they said
that Dragon Dictation was half baked was just one of the blind persons
point of view. It wasn't the point of view of the author. Well riten
 article, and well thought out.
