Re: Emergency S.O.S

I suppose if an emergency call was easy to cancel, anyone trying to harm you
could cancel the call. Nice to know this works. Thanks for trying it &
letting us all know.

Subject: Emergency S.O.S

Hello,

So I just updated my wife’s iPhone 6S to iOS 11. She is sighted, but I still
had Voiceover on and showed her the new Emergency S.O.S setting. By default
this is turned off, if you turn it on then pressing the power/sleep button 5
times quickly will start a siren and count-down, I think it’s 8 or 10 seconds,
and then the phone calls 9 1 1. I think I tried this once on my Apple Watch
where you have the same functionality if you press the side button 5 times
quickly, but I could easily cancel it. This time I did a 2-finger double tap,
but that didn’t work, then I got nervous and couldn’t find the right button,
asked my wife and she tried but of course Voiceover was on. At 3 seconds she
said “turn off Voiceover” so I triple clicked the home button and she tried to
cancel it, but it was too late. The 9 1 1 operator came on, I sheepishly
explained that we just updated to iOS 11 and accidently triggered the call with
this new feature and he did not sound at all surprised. He did ask if I would
mind staying on while he gets the police on the line so I could confirm to them
that everything was OK, I did so, provided my name and confirmed that I was not
under any sort of duresse and all was good.

In the meantime my wife has myself and my Mum listet as emergency contacts. I
heard the text messages come in, but we were just barely done with 9 1 1 when
my Mum called and asked what on earth was wrong… oops… maybe just take my word
for it that the feature works great, don’t try it if you don’t really need it.

Interestingly enough after all of that the screen displayed a message “Sent
message to emergency contacts” or something like that and try as we might with
and without Voiceover we could not figure out a way to get rid of it to get
back to the home screen. Eventually I ended up turning the phone off and back
on after 20 or so seconds, then all was good except for as my wife said a
blinking “Emergency S.O.S is using your location” at the very top right in the
status bar, even to the right of the battery status. It bugged my wife so much
that she ended up turning off location services for Emergency S.O.S which is
under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. I think maybe
it would have eventually gone away by itself, but she said it bothered her.
Maybe in a couple of days I’ll turn it back on and see if that still shows up
because on my phone location services for this is on and I don’t get this in
the status bar, probably it was there because it was used.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: Creating folders

2017-09-08 Thread Sherry Wells

Here's a quick method to create a folder:

To create a folder, just perform a one finger double tap and hold any app
until it starts wiggling (this applies when VoiceOver is running). Then,
drag the app into another app that you would like to group in the same
folder. The iPhone will automatically generate a name for the folder based
on its contents. You can edit this name by performing a two finger double
tap and holding the folder icon. The bottom half of the screen will show
the keyboard in order for you to type in a new name. There will already be
a name in the edit box, so you will need to delete this before entering the
new name for the folder. Perform a one finger double tap on the Save
Button, which will appear in the upper right hand corner of the iPhone
screen.

Hi Joseph,

Sorry, I'm confused. What is it that costs 9.99? He is currently doing

Hi Sherry, sounds like he would be in need of using Google voice or some
other app, such as's phone.com or something of that nature. Because there's
not traditionally an app to just ford business calls to another line.
However, he came going to settings, and then under phone, he can forward all
calls to his land line for business use. If that's not what he wants, then
he'll have to use the phone.com and small fee of 999. To use the service.
However, right now they're offering a free trial. Which I have not used to
get. I thought about getting an account but haven't done so yet.

Hi,

I will go through the steps to make sure we are talking about the same steps.

First, you created your group.

Next, you selected that group.

Next you double tapped on the Send text button.

Now you will be in your group and you hit the next button.

Now, you should be in the Compose Text screen.

Then, write your text.

Now, there is a done button in the upper right, double tap that.

Then, you double tapped on Next again.

Now, you should be in the standard text message screen with the send button
just above the o and p on the onscreen keyboard.

Double tap that send button and you are finished.

Does that help?

Richard

I personally like A2Z Contacts for doing group Text Messages and group Email
messages.

It is free, but it is worth the $1.99 to get rid of the ads.

The app developer was very responsive to my requests for some VoiceOver
enhancements. It works great with VoiceOver.

Note the “2” is the digit, not the word in the app name” A2Z Contacts.”

There is no way within the messages app to do as you want. With that said, to
send a group message with Siri, you can just say, send a message to, and list
all of the peoples names.

There are also some third party apps that let you create groups to send
messages too, but Siri will not work with the third party app. Check out
AppleVis for apps that help you create texting groups.

No, you don’t need to create an account on SendSpace to download movies from
Blind Mice Mart. I use the computer to do this so just hit alt+shift+l to

the phone. I can just confirm that you don’t need a SendSpace account. The

2016-12-10 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

I prefer using ITunes on my computer. After installing IOS 10 I began to
receive a prompt on my IPhone every time I opened ITunes on the computer. The
prompt informed me that someone had opened ITunes in my area & I had to click
Allow. Then I got a prompt teling me to go somewhere on the phone to sign in.
Unfortunately I got interrupted, had to leave town for a couple days. Now I
open ITunes on the computer & it does not prompt me for a password nor will it
download any podcasts. How do I fix this & what can I do so that I can use
ITunes on the computer without my phone being involved? I called Apple Help &
was told that the fact my phone started prompting me after I installed IOS 10
was a coincidence – not helpful.

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

Can't Set Password for Gmail

2016-11-27 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

Gmail on my phone was working fine until I installed the latest version of IOS.
Now I have been prompted to enter my password. This would not be a problem
but when I double click on the password field I see the keyboard flash onscreen
then disappear. I tried several times with a double tap & a split tap. The
keyboard will simply not stay onscreen so I can enter the password. I tried
getting out of mail & going back in & have also shut off the phone & turned it
back on. In mail, I have gone to settings which also prompts for a password.
The same thing happens here, the keyboard flashes on then disappears. What am
I doing wrong here?

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

Weather Office Stuck, Never Changes

2016-04-11 Thread Sherry Wells
I’ve had the free version of Weather Office for a while now & really like it.
It has been stuck for a few days now. I didn’t notice at first as our weather
has been pretty consistent. I tried shutting down my phone & restarting but
that did not solve the problem. The regular weather app is working fine. I
guess my next step will be to delete the app & redownload it. I’m hoping
someone might know why this is happening.

At least in my mail app, when I double tap on the edit button in my trash

Re: Moving Apps from One Page to Another

2016-03-31 Thread Sherry Wells

Sieghard,

I have had the same experience re trying to move something only to have it
pop into a folder with another app. I definitely do not get the 5 second
beeping as I do when removing things from folders. And anytime I want to
move something to another page it always takes several tries. I hear
approaching edge of screen then the icon bounces back to where it was. I've
tried going faster & slower & have not found a good way to do this yet.
Maybe, as you mention, the difference in all our experiences has to do with
the pressure applied to the screen. I'll have to play around with that.

Hi Mary,

I have only used my Mom's iPad a few times and one thing for sure is that
with the larger screen there is a bit more wiggle room so to speak.
Voiceover may syay you are on a folder, but I find that if I come from the
right, for example, and move to the left that on an iPad I often have to
keep on going left just a bit more after it says that it's on an app before
it says "Opening".

Sherry, As for what you describe, the jumping to another page is probably
because you aren't moving straight up or down but maybe also a bit sideways
and then if you are already near an edge it would be easy for iOS to think
you want to go to the next page.
As for having to hurry because it says it's opening an existing folder, I
think once again maybe you aren't holding down on the screen firm enough. I
can just stop and hold when it says "Opening" and nothing happens for at
least a 5 count, in fact I just tried it and after it says "Opening folder"
it starts making that beep that you get when you move an app out of a folder
when it says to hold for 5 seconds to close. It seems like if you don't
continue to move for 5 seconds it will drop the app in the folder, but
certainly not before.

Sieghard

I haven't tried moving any apps since getting 9.3. But I have not noticed
the problem you are referring to on my 6S. In fact, on my iPad mini, running
the same version of iOS as my 6S, I wish they would speed up the folder
opening. I can sit on a folder all night with an app seemingly, and the
damned folder will not open to add the app. It's very strange, because I
don't have that problem on the phone. This is one area where I wish Apple
would take a page from Google's book. The Google now launcher on android has
a beautiful way of moving apps, both on the same page and to another page.
You have absolute control over where the app is going. It's wonderful. And I
can't say that when comparing the two systems too often.

try to move across an app it says Opening folder... and then you have to
hurry and keep moving fast to try to get off before it opens. Sometimes it
keeps making new folders even when you try to move off the other app. I
think I will get out my BT keyboard and see if that is easier to control.

So maybe 9.3 is touchier, or the 6S is.
Just a thought.

Hi Kelby,

Moving apps is not random, but it requires a light touch, if you have a
good special awareness of how you move your finger when you drag an app it
is much easier and mostly it requires practice. Try to start small when
you practice and just see if you can move an app one or two spots to the
left or right or up or down or maybe see if you can move the top left app
(in row 1) down into row 2 and on second or third position from the left.
Voiceover gives some feedback as you move it, it will say if you are on
another app and it will say stuff like "On so and so app, will create
folder with so and so app". Here is an example:

Assume you have the calculator app in row 1 on the very left and right
next to it you have the clock app. Now if you double tap and hold on
calculator, it will say "Moving Calculator". If you now drag your finger
to the right just a bit it should say "On Clock, will create folder with
clock". If you let go at this point a folder

NPR One App Question

2015-03-22 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

I’ve been using the NPR One app and, as others have said, am finding it quite
accessible. I am confused on one aspect though, the slider at the bottom of
the screen when a program is playing. The slider gives percentages which I
assume means how much of the program has completed. What is confusing though
is that voice over says adjustable, swipe up down to adjust. There is
already a rewind button so I’m not sure why one would want to decrease the
percentage. And I’ve been totally unsuccessful at increasing the percentage
complete or fast forwarding.Does someone know how to fast forward through a
program? Or am I wrong as to the purpose of this slider?

Also, sometimes a button labelled interesting appears. I’m guessing one can
click this if you like the program the app will tend towards more programs of
that type. Unfortunately this button does not show up all the time. Any ideas
as to how this works? Is the button random?

Thanks.

Weather Notification Temperature Inconsistencies

to get the temp but apparently not. This has not only happened when it has
been extremely cold. Does anyone know an explanation for this difference
which one should I rely on?

number was announced when I received the call. I did ensure I was in the All

Thanks,

All Menus or All Access?

2014-12-08 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi,

I’ve seen mentioned an app called All Access. I was going to go get that for
use with reading menus. Then today someone mentioned All Menus. Are these
separate apps? If so, what extra things does All Access offer?

Thanks,

2 Notifications Received for One Text Message

2014-12-03 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

I hope I can explain this so it makes sense. When I get one text message, VO
says 2 unread messages. The only thing I can figure out is that the message
appears both in messages in the notification area. This is confusing as I’m
never sure if I really did get 2 texts just can’t find the 2nd one. Is there
some way to not have texts sent to the notification center?

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

Re: another example of Apple programmers sense of humor with Siri

2014-11-21 Thread Sherry Wells
I wasn’t even trying for humor got a great response. I had dictated a text
message through Siri cancelled it as I had messed it up. Generally when I do
this Siri just says ok, let me know if I can do anything else or something like
that. This time when I said cancel she said okie dokie artichokie. What a
pleasant delightful surprise! You gotta love those developers who came up
with this stuff.

Blind Square Questions

2014-11-08 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

I am considering getting Blind Square so read through the frequently asked
questions on their web site. I have a few questions for those of you using
Blind Square.

1) The FAQs state that Blind Square does NOT offer turn by turn directions.
Does this mean that wen walking, it will not tell me to turn right at the next
intersection? This seems odd

2) FAQ says that if you carry your device in a vertical position to make sure
the back of it points in your travelling direction. I carry my phone in a
front pants pocket. Will this be a problem?

3) Do you need to install any other GPS apps in order for Blind Square to work
well? I’ve seen references to Four Square, Googlemaps Open Street Maps but
am confused as to whether you have to have these apps in order for Blind Square
to work.

4) Lastly, what is the price? I could not find this on the web site.

Thanks in advance for any info,
Sherry Wells

Re: Blind Square Questions

2014-11-08 Thread Sherry Wells
Thanks for this info. So if I want to travel from point A to point B only
use Blind Square, I will have to check out the route ahead of time and just
remember to turn right on street A then left on street B. Blind Square will
tell me when I reach my destination though. Is this correct? If I want actual
directions that tell me when which way to turn, I can use Google maps. While
using Google maps, can Blind Square run in the background tell me info about
my surroundings? Will Google maps do that as well?

Thanks,

Hi there. Blind Square will not give you turn by turn directions. That's not
what's the feature for it. This goes into your question 3 I think, if you want
turn by turn directions, I highly recommend Google Maps for turn by turn
directions. The cost of Blind Square in the US is 30 dollars. You don't need
the Foursquare App but it will add functionality specific to it if you use it.
Lastly, if you want to carry it the way you have been, that's fine. Over all I
highly recommend this app.

In addition to what was said below, even when the virtual keyboard is
up, I can still go back and review my previous exchange of text
messages. If I start from a recent message displayed on the screen, I
can swipe left and go back through the list of previous messages in
reverse chronological order. Note that using the various page advancing
gestures didn't have any effect and just exploring the screen or swiping
right from the top only got me to a few messages that were actually
displayed on the screen. Like I said, I had to swipe left from a message
on the screen to scroll back through previous messages.

If you started a message to that person, just delet what you had

Buying Apps with the Fingerprint as ID

2014-10-04 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

I am a new IPhone user bought my first app today. I wanted to use my
fingerprint as id but that didn’t seem to work. I have set up the fingerprint
went to settings turned use fingerprint in ITunes app store to on. Yet
when I went to buy the app, I had to enter my ITunes password at least twice.
My credit card info was there but I had to enter the security code expiration
date. Is this just because this is the first time I have bought an app on the
phone? How is being able to use the fingerprint as id supposed to work?

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

Any Way to Use Touch Typing on Numeric Keypad?

2014-09-25 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

When on a call and needing to touch numbers to go through an automated system,
I would find it much easier to use touch typing than double or split tapping
the numbers. Is there any way to set touch typing on the numeric keypad?

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

2014-09-25 Thread Sherry Wells
I’m fine using touch typing everywhere. I currently have touch typing on for
text entry. It is not working for the numeric keypad though. Did I miss some
setting that says set as default?

Thanks,
Sherry Wells

You have to use touch typing on the whole thing if you're going to use it on
the keypad. There's no way to set it for the keypad only.

Logistics of Taking Picture with KNFB Reader

2014-09-22 Thread Sherry Wells

Hello all,

Per the podcast on KNFB Reader, you can place 2 fingers on the take picture
button then lift one to take a picture. This is part of the app designed to
make it easier to take a picture without moving your phone. The take
picture button is quite large, taking up most of the left side of the phone.

Now, having said all this, I do not have KNFB Reader yet. I am basing this
info on 2 podcasts plus info I have read about the app. Someone who has it
could verify that this works.

Regards,
Sherry Wells

Hi Rob,

I tried the volume button in KNFB Reader and at least for me it doesn't seem
to work. ?But in any case, I actually find pushing the volume button is more
likely to make me move the phone than a double tap or split tap. The
iPhone's touch screen really requires a very light touch and with a bit of
practice you can do a double tap and barely touch the screen.

What I haven't tried yet is to use the headset. This is probably the best
method for taking a picture as you can press the middle part of the headset
to take the picture or start/stop video recording and you don't even have to
touch your phone at all or press any button.

As for holding the phone, I just hold it in my left hand gripping just the
bottom half of the phone from underneath and I find this quite natural and
then my right hand is free to do the tapping.

Holding your phone in this unnatural position over a document, and feeling

so how do you hold your orientation while fiddling with controls, and why
don't this cause camera shake when doing the double tap to take the picture,
don't the volume button shutter mehcanism work for this?

It just struck me how such a combination of things at once could indeed make
the whole process a little shaky and flaky to some.

I was glad when I discovered the volume button could be used for the camera,
since I never did any good trying to take photos while fiddling on the
screen and tapping.

At one point on the AppleVis podcast, the demonstrator mentioned that it was
important to first touch the screen with a finger to bring focus there, then
to do a double tap. I don’t know if this is related to what you’re talking
about, but it may be worth a try.

Thanks Sieghard… I use the two-finger double-tap all the time in other
contexts, though… It’s like there are two layers of activity going on at the
same time… One layer is the text being read to me, and the other layer is
the app elements. I can flick right and left and find a play/pause button,
or a next and back button, but it absolutely will not respond to a
two-finger double-tap. Is there a setting I need to toggle to make this
work?

Thanks,

Hi Brian,

First of all, in my opinion KNFB Reader is not designed to read a 300 page
book by doing free-hand scans of each page or even double page. If you are
indeed scanning entire bvooks I think a flatbed scanner is still the way to
go.

As far as using a 2-finger double tap to stop and start reading that does
work for me. I suspect you don’t do the gesture quite correctly. If
Voiceover tells you what is on the screen maybe it is just registering as a
single 2-finger tap.

I find it easiest to hold the phone with one hand and to use the other to do
my tapping. Having tilt feedback on I think works great and I occasionally
use the field of view report. Fortunately I find it not too difficult to
hold the phne level and usually within 5 degrees skew which doesn’t seem to
effect the scan quality very much if at all. I guess everybody is different
here just as people use different methods to hold the phone and type, it is
something we all have to figure out for ourselves.

Maps - Location Off

2014-09-22 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

I’m a new IPhone user have a 5s. I’ve been playing around with maps an
noticed my location is always slightly off where I really am. At home maps has
me in the address next door for instance. This isn’t even consistent as once,
maps had me several addresses down the street. I have tried a couple of other
locations too maps is always slightly off. Is this normal? And if one were
to use maps to get anywhere, would you end up a door or two down from where you
really wanted to go? At this point, I would not have any confidence in using
maps. Do others use it or does everyone just get one of the better gps apps?
Thanks.

Passbook App

2014-09-22 Thread Sherry Wells
Hello,

I wanted to try using the Passbook app that came on my IPhone 5s. When I go
into it, there is a button on the bottom that says apps for Passbook. When I
double tap the button I am taken to an app store screen but it says it contains
some free apps to get you started. These have nothing to do with using
Passbook. They are apps like Garage Band, ITunes U, and Numbers. Why isn’t
the apps for Passbook button taking me to a list of apps for Passbook? Thanks.

IOS 8 - Will It Automatically Install?

2014-09-22 Thread Sherry Wells
HI all,

I am a new IPhone owner so this question may be simplistic to many of you. I
have already had one update to install on my IPhone 5s; it showed up in the
notification area. I read somewhere that if you do not do these installs, they
will install automatically after a certain time period has passed. Will this
be the case with IOS8? Will it show up as an update in my notifications? If I
do not want to upgrade to IOS8 quite yet, will I have the option to delete the
upgrade? Thanks.
