Happy Update was Help, What to do about a briefly submerged phone

2021-04-27 Thread Lisa Belville
Ah, if only I had seen this last night.    My sister was over last
evening and she removed the case.  Everything was bone dry, so she just
had to plug it in.  There was a brief notification from the phone saying
there was water in the lightening port, so charging wouldn't happen.

I kept the phone in a bag of oatmeal all night and went to the Verizon
store this morning.

They looked at the SIM card and tested the charging and all was well.

The Verizon rep also reminded me about the depth and length of time an
iPhone could be under water and still survive.  It's nice to know, but
I'm not going to be dunking my phone into anything wet any time soon.

Lisa, who's off to find a water proof case that also looks nice. I know,
good luck with that.

I was in the kitchen cooking and had my phone on the counter so I could use the
speaker phone.  I moved a dish towel and woops, my phone slid off the counter
and into a full sink of soapy water.

This is an iPhone 12 Pro that has a Zag case on it with a tempord glass screen
protector.  The case has TPU bumpers on the edges of the phone and a hard shell
on the back and halfway up the sides of the phone. None of the ports are
protected like the battery charger or speakers.

I scooped the phone out of the water as soon as it happened and was able to
continue my conversation with no sign of the phone malfunctioning. It seems to
be Okay, except the edges of the case where the TPU touches the screen are
damp.  The speakers sound Okay and all of the buttons are working.

Do I put it in a bag of rice or what?  Ironically, I have a day before I need
to return it to Verizon.

How soon can I safely plug the phone into a brick charger or should I
even try??

HTH.  And yes, I feel really dumb.  I'm going to price Otterbox cases
now.

RE: Help, What to do about a briefly submerged phone

2021-04-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I am really surprised by all the "strange" home remedies, I would, for example,
never even think of dripping alcohol into the Lightning port and putting it on
a paper towel where the paper "sticks into the port" I don't think is very
recommended by Apple. They always warn not to stick anything into the port.
Yes, you can sometimes get lint into the port if you always carry the phone in
your pocket, but there are small pins in that port so unless you can see
exactly what you are doing sticking something in there is probably not a good
idea and when an Apple Geneous once cleaned out my port in the Apple Store all
he used was compressed air. Besides blowing into the port a few times using
compressed air is probably your best option to get any residual water out of
there and once that is done any remaining moisture will dry in short order and
without using the heat from a hairdryer or anything else.

So my information was outdated, the iPhone 12 series are IP68 water-resistant
which means submerged for up to 30 minutes under 6 metres of water (19.8 feet).
Here is an interesting article and according to that Apple actually underrates
the waterproofness:

Your iPhone 12 Pro canm be submerged in 2 metres of water (7 feet) for a half
hour, if it just fell into the sinkand you got it out right away I wouldn't
even worrym. If it happens again wipe it dry and carry on. Worst thing which
could happen is that your glass screen protector may come off. As for the
Lightning port it's fully isolated from the inside, once again just wipe the
phone dry, blow into the Lightning port a few times and maybe let it dry out
for another half hour before you plug it in.

I'm going to price Otterbox cases
now.

Submerge the phone in dry, uncooked white rice and let it sit that way
overnight, is what I’ve heard that people have done, it dries everything out

the hair dryer might not be such a good idea. You might get lucky and
fix the issue, but you're also going to create humidity inside the phone
that could cause major damage to the device. Rubbing the phone down with
an alcohol wipe would work a little better. My ear speaker got water in
it and I dripped a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol inside the grill to
evaporate the water. But don't make a habit out of doing this because it
could ware down the finger print resistance that Apple applies to the
outside of the iPhone. There is an app called speaker cleaner that uses
tones like the Apple watch to expel water from the speakers.

But yeah not a good thing to plug your fone in from amins power.

But yes I would normally power off a device that has had water in it,

Simon, my sister was over here helping me look for rice.  I had none, but a
short Google search suggested oatmeal or even couscous.  I decided to go with
the oatmeal.  I put the phone in a ziplock bag and it's currently sitting on my
dryer that's been running for a couple of hours.

The phone was working just fine before I powered it off.  The ominous thing is
that my sister insisted plugging it in was safe even though I reminded how
electricity and water didn't mix, yadayada.  She had removed the case and
everything was bone dry. The phone connected, but a message popped up saying
the lightening charging wasn't available because the phone detected water in
the charging port.

we unplugged the phone and I gave it a gentle shake.  There was a slight mist
of water that came out of the port.  It wasn't even two or three drops, just a
mist.

I'm cautiously confident at this point.

Use the rice if you like but be aware that it’s been found to be a myth

Re: Help, What to do about a briefly submerged phone

2021-04-26 Thread Lisa Belville
Yes, this was the case for me.  I don't think all of the phone even
touched the water, but it's a long phone, so I believe the bottom
portion containing the speakers and of course the lightening port got
wet.  It didn't seem to retain a great deal of water.  Right now I'm
confident, but it's my only phone, so I'm still having to use it, at
least for a few more hours.

That sounds like good ideas about turning off and removing from case. I tried

RE: Help, What to do about a briefly submerged phone

2021-04-26 Thread Carolyn
Once my trusty 11 fell into a commode, thankfully not a recently used one. I
grabbed it out immediately, just kept on trucking after thoroughly drying - no
effect whatsoever. That happened several months ago.

Subject: Help, What to do about a briefly submerged phone

Hi, all. I'm so ready to kick myself.

I know the newer iPhones are water resistant, but how resistant?

I'm going to price Otterbox cases
now.

Hi. I would do this if I could figure out how to remove the case. It feels
like it's in 2 separate pieces. The Verizon store put it on for me, so I never
saw the case before it was on the phone.

I think I have some rice, though, so I can at least do that.

RE: Help, What to do about a briefly submerged phone

2021-04-26 Thread Richard Turner
Agreed, do the rice trick, but I think those phones are rated pretty much water
proof up to 3 feet or is it 3 meters, in any case, remove the case and put the
phone in the uncooked rice so it is completely covered, preferably with the
charging port facing downwards.
Then, use paper towels to dry out the case and let it sit over night as well.
Then, try plugging it tomorrow morning and I'm sure all will be well.

Re: Help, What to do about a briefly submerged phone

2021-04-26 Thread Kimberly
I would start by turning the phone off, I mean all the way off like power it
down. Then I would take it out of the case and put it in a bag of uncooked
rice. Leave it there overnight before you try turning it on again or plugging
it in.

I’ve had this happened to my phone as well and it made me feel dumb too. But my
phone was OK and I think yours will be too.

Help, What to do about a briefly submerged phone

2021-04-26 Thread Lisa Belville

Hi, all.  I'm so ready to kick myself.

I know the newer iPhones are water resistant, but how resistant?

I was in the kitchen cooking and had my phone on the counter so I could
use the speaker phone.  I moved a dish towel and woops, my phone slid
off the counter and into a full sink of soapy water.

This is an iPhone 12 Pro that has a Zag case on it with a tempord glass
screen protector.  The case has TPU bumpers on the edges of the phone
and a hard shell on the back and halfway up the sides of the phone.
None of the ports are protected like the battery charger or speakers.

I scooped the phone out of the water as soon as it happened and was able
to continue my conversation with no sign of the phone malfunctioning.
It seems to be Okay, except the edges of the case where the TPU touches
the screen are damp.  The speakers sound Okay and all of the buttons are
working.

Do I put it in a bag of rice or what?  Ironically, I have a day before I
need to return it to Verizon.

How soon can I safely plug the phone into a brick charger or should I
even try??

HTH.  And yes, I feel really dumb.  I'm going to price Otterbox cases
now.
