RE: Any Word about New Phones?

Wow! Thanks for that update! Keep us posted if you would about what progress,
if any, it makes. I, and I suspect others were planning waiting until Apple
comes out with a 5G device. If it's not worth the change, one could save a
whole bunch of money!

Again, thanks.

We have 5G here in Chicago. Only one phone is available to support it.
Coverage is spotty and unreliable. Right now, it is in a testing
stage. On regular Verizon 4g, download speeds are between 40 and 60
MBPS, which is more than adequate for all current applications. The
only limit to this is in sharing a mobile hot spot with several
friends who are all watching high definition videos at the same time.

If you are talking about 5G then I assume we may hear something about that in
September from Apple. I don't follow Google and Samsung and so on very much so
don't know. When it comes to iPhones we may hear rumours soon, but Apple never
talks about hardware before September. Anyways, while 5G may be rolled out in a
few test markets we won't see wide-spread availability for at least another

Keep in mind that Apple and Qualcomm, one of the leading makers of wireless

Subject: A word of warning about setting up new phones from an iTunes backup

I just received my new iPhone 8 today, and since this is my 4th iPhone, I was
looking forward to a fairly smooth and straight-forward setup experience.
Unfortunately, it ended up being rather frustrating and time consuming, thanks
to VoiceOver failing to speak the unlock screen during the iTunes restore
process.

The setup process started by asking me to select my WiFi network and to provide
the password for it. I was then asked to set up touch ID and create a pass
code, which I did without issues. I was then presented with the options to set
up as a new iPhone, restore from an existing iPhone, or to restore from an
iTunes backup. Since my previous iPhone didn't have IOS 11 or better, I chose
the iTunes option, and here's where things did not go as expected. iTunes
apparently completed most, but not all of the restore operation before
restarting my iPhone. When my phone restarted, I had no speech, and triple
clicking the home button did absolutely nothing, from what I could tell. ITunes
came up with a dialog informing me that it couldn't connect to Jake's iPhone
because it was locked with a pass code, so at this point, there seemed to be no
way for me to enter my passcode from the touch screen of my device, and I could
not go any further with the process using iTunes.

I ended up putting my phone in recovery mode, which then allowed me to restore
it from iTunes while removing the pass code I had originally created. Since
there was no passcode at this point, iTunes was able to finish the job after my
phone restarted, and I could then proceed with the setup process from there,
including setting up touch ID and the pass code. I'm not completely sure what
happened, but I'm guessing iTunes left my phone in a strange state when it
restarted my phone during its restore process that prevented VoiceOver from
being fully functional. I hope no one else has had this much difficulty, but if
you're going to be setting up a new phone, I'd advise against the restore from
iTunes option for now.

On a positive note, while Apple did not list it in the "What's in the box" page
for the iPhone 8, I did still receive a lightning to 3.5 MM jack adapter in the
box with my phone.

RE: New Phones

2017-08-16 Thread Rob
If you have a computer, you might connect each current phone to the computer
and make an encrypted backup using iTunes. Be sure you take notes with the
time of each backup and which phone is being backed up.

Then when you get the new phones, connect them to the computer and restore from
the appropriate backup.

The only thing I am not absolutely sure of is whether you can restore from an
older backup than the most recent one. I have never had to do that.

Re: New Phones

2017-08-16 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

You can absolutely share an Apple ID for apps and have separate ones for
iCloud. Have the person whose address isn't being used create their own iCloud
Apple ID. Then you can each sign into iCloud with your own IDs, sync contacts
with iCloud, and keep them separate.

To set up the new ID, open Settings, and choose the first option, "Apple, ID,
iCloud, and Apps." If you're currently sharing iCloud, sign out at the bottom.
Then choose to set up a new ID.

hi,

I'm not at all an expert onthis but, if you shair hte same apple id the

seperate them except to download them to your new phones Get your own
apple id then delete the ones you don't want for hte id. Why exactly do you
shair an apple id? I think it's be easy to do sepret ones If you want to
use one pay methed Ithink family shair would work for this. Others who are
more knoledgable might have a better answer for you but, This is what came

If you can work it out on the same apple id do let us know but, I'm not sure

Hi Paul,

If you have an Apple Watch unpair it from your phone before you back up your
phone. This will ensure that all watch data is backed up.

Then connect your phone to your computer and choose Transfer Purchases to make
sure all your purchases are on your computer.

Now do an encrypted backup so you get your passwords, health data, and Homekit
data if you use Homekit included in your backup.

When you set up your new phone, choose to restore from iTunes. Connect your
phone to your computer when prompted, and choose the most recent backup, which
should be selected by default. That should do it.

Re: getting new phones tomorrow, backup questions

2015-03-08 Thread Paul Ferrara
Well all, I do want to tell you that the iTunes bakcups worked perfectly; I
discovered that the videos were stored in with my photos so were backed up fine.

I did notice that apps I shared with my wife on family sharing did not download
to her phone, but this was fixed easily.

So if you’re going to back up your phone or phones soon, make sure you,
especially if iTunes doesn’t ask, go into the file menu and select send
purchases from the iPhone to the computer or whatever it is called exactly; if
you don’t, you will likely not get all your apps or ringtones.

Best Buy was crowded, but once we got home, setting up the new phones was
almost a piece of cake.

Thanks to all.

  Paul,

First let me state the obvious and make sure you have the password for your
encrypted iTunes backup. Without it, you won't be able to restore it to your
new phones. There has been discussion on this list about forgotten passwords
lately and you don't want that surprise at restoration time.

I would recommend that you make sure your old iPhone is connected to your
computer and make sure you tab over to Movies while the iPhone has focus. With
the Movies checked, tabbing should take you to a tick box labeled Sync Movies
which you should tick. If you tab one more time, there is a box for which
movies to automatically include and you should select this box and make sure
all is the option.

After you make sure everything you want synced from your phone to your
computer with iTunes is marked, sync them again and then make another iTunes
encrypted backup. That way you'll be sure that everything that's on your phone
will also be on your computer and included in the iTunes encrypted backup.

Anna's suggestion to also do an iCloud backup is a good one since safety nets
are wise to use. I would recommend you first restore your iTunes encrypted
backup provided you've made sure it is complete and you know the password.

Good luck with the restore and enjoy your new iPhones.

Transfer Purchases when backing up my phone last fall, but 112 apps weren't
actually copied to the computer. So I had to restore from my iCloud backup
instead. That's why I strongly recommend doing both kinds of backups. But I'm
pretty sure that when you do a backup, assuming everything is working properly,
all your content is copied to the backup, except the sort of items I mentioned
in my last message - content designed to be redownloaded from iCloud. And if
you do an encrypted backup, your passwords are copied as well.

Best,
Anna

Thanks for this clarification. I had a very bad experience when advising
someone about doing an iTunes backup without first syncing and none of her
apps were restored with the backup. I assumed this was because she downloaded
all of them on her iPhone and never synced them to her computer. Maybe it was
because she never selected to transfer purchases within iTunes.

 Hi,

A backup backs up everything, regardless of your sync settings. some apps
don't store their data in backups, such as the tracks in NatureSpace, and if
you use iTunes Match, your music may not be backed up, but you can download
all this again later from the relevant app. Photos and videos will be part of
 the iTunes backup automatically.

 Paul,

First let me state the obvious and make sure you have the password for your
encrypted iTunes backup. Without it, you won't be able to restore it to
your new phones. There has been discussion on this list about forgotten
passwords lately and you don't want that surprise at restoration time.

I would recommend that you make sure your old iPhone is connected to your
computer and make sure you tab over to Movies while the iPhone has focus.
With the Movies checked, tabbing should take you to a tick box labeled Sync
Movies which you should tick. If you tab one more time, there is a box for
which movies to automatically include and you should select this box and
make sure all is the option.

After you make sure everything you want synced from your phone to your
computer with iTunes is marked, sync them again and then make another
iTunes encrypted backup. That way you'll be sure that everything that's on
your phone will also be on your computer and included in the iTunes
 encrypted backup.

Anna's suggestion to also do an iCloud backup is a good one since safety
nets are wise to use. I would recommend you first restore your iTunes
encrypted backup provided you've made sure it is complete and you know the
 password.

Good luck with the restore and enjoy your new iPhones.

Hi,

A backup backs up everything, regardless of your sync settings. some apps don't
store their data in backups, such as the tracks in NatureSpace, and if you use
iTunes Match, your music may not be backed up, but you can download all this
again later from the relevant app. Photos and videos will be part of the iTunes

With the Movies checked, tabbing should take you to a tick box labeled Sync
Movies which you should tick. If you tab one more time, there is a box for
which movies to automatically include and you should select this box and
make sure all is the option.

After you make sure everything you want synced from your phone to your
computer with iTunes is marked, sync them again and then make another iTunes
encrypted backup. That way you'll be sure that everything that's on your
phone will also be on your computer and included in the iTunes encrypted
 backup.

Anna's suggestion to also do an iCloud backup is a good one since safety
nets are wise to use. I would recommend you first restore your iTunes
encrypted backup provided you've made sure it is complete and you know the
 password.

Good luck with the restore and enjoy your new iPhones.

2015-03-07 Thread Alan Lemly
Anna,

Thanks for this clarification. I had a very bad experience when advising
someone about doing an iTunes backup without first syncing and none of her
apps were restored with the backup. I assumed this was because she
downloaded all of them on her iPhone and never synced them to her computer.
Maybe it was because she never selected to transfer purchases within iTunes.

Alan

Hi,

A backup backs up everything, regardless of your sync settings. some apps
don't store their data in backups, such as the tracks in NatureSpace, and if
you use iTunes Match, your music may not be backed up, but you can download
all this again later from the relevant app. Photos and videos will be part
of the iTunes backup automatically.

Also, if you have any of them on the right surface, you will hear the
vibration go off pretty well, at least with a 4S. I would think the sound

I have heard people say that one of their major complaints about the
current iPhone models is that the ringer volume, even when set at 100
percent, is too low. I personally don't find this to be true. I don't
recall anything mentioned about increased sound capabilities of the iPhone 6

sound in the new models?

Re: the sound of the new phones?

2014-09-15 Thread Charles Rivard
Great minds think alike. I also use that ringtone. I've got it set to full
volume in case I'm in a noisy environment, but have no problem hearing it.

Wow, my phone drives me out of the room and it's only at 70%. I think the
ring tone you select makes a difference. Some of them seem not to be very loud.
I have mine set to the classic phone ring, like a land line phone. I know. How
boring, but it sure works.

I have heard people say that one of their major complaints about the current
iPhone models is that the ringer volume, even when set at 100 percent, is too
low. I personally don't find this to be true. I don't recall anything
mentioned about increased sound capabilities of the iPhone 6 or 6 plus. Does
anyone know of increased ringer volume and or improved sound in the new models?
