RE: Any Word about New Phones?
Wow! Thanks for that update! Keep us posted if you would about what progress, if any, it makes. I, and I suspect others were planning waiting until Apple comes out with a 5G device. If it's not worth the change, one could save a whole bunch of money! Again, thanks. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kelly Pierce Sent: Friday, July 5, 2019 11:02 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Any Word about New Phones? RE: A word of warning about setting up new phones from an iTunes backup
Hello Jake, I am so sorry you had problems setting up your new 8 but, thank you for sharing the experience with us. Also, welcome to the iPhone 8 series. I absolutely love this series. Mark -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Jake Sent: Tuesday, September 18, 2018 8:57 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: A word of warning about setting up new phones from an iTunes backup I just received my new iPhone 8 today, and since this is my 4th iPhone, I was looking forward to a fairly smooth and straight-forward setup experience. Unfortunately, it ended up being rather frustrating and time consuming, thanks to VoiceOver failing to speak the unlock screen during the iTunes restore process. The setup process started by asking me to select my WiFi network and to provide the password for it. I was then asked to set up touch ID and create a pass code, which I did without issues. I was then presented with the options to set up as a new iPhone, restore from an existing iPhone, or to restore from an iTunes backup. Since my previous iPhone didn't have IOS 11 or better, I chose the iTunes option, and here's where things did not go as expected. iTunes apparently completed most, but not all of the restore operation before restarting my iPhone. When my phone restarted, I had no speech, and triple clicking the home button did absolutely nothing, from what I could tell. ITunes came up with a dialog informing me that it couldn't connect to Jake's iPhone because it was locked with a pass code, so at this point, there seemed to be no way for me to enter my passcode from the touch screen of my device, and I could not go any further with the process using iTunes. I ended up putting my phone in recovery mode, which then allowed me to restore it from iTunes while removing the pass code I had originally created. Since there was no passcode at this point, iTunes was able to finish the job after my phone restarted, and I could then proceed with the setup process from there, including setting up touch ID and the pass code. I'm not completely sure what happened, but I'm guessing iTunes left my phone in a strange state when it restarted my phone during its restore process that prevented VoiceOver from being fully functional. I hope no one else has had this much difficulty, but if you're going to be setting up a new phone, I'd advise against the restore from iTunes option for now. On a positive note, while Apple did not list it in the "What's in the box" page for the iPhone 8, I did still receive a lightning to 3.5 MM jack adapter in the box with my phone. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. RE: New Phones
If you have a computer, you might connect each current phone to the computer and make an encrypted backup using iTunes. Be sure you take notes with the time of each backup and which phone is being backed up. Then when you get the new phones, connect them to the computer and restore from the appropriate backup. The only thing I am not absolutely sure of is whether you can restore from an older backup than the most recent one. I have never had to do that. Re: New Phones
Hi, You can absolutely share an Apple ID for apps and have separate ones for iCloud. Have the person whose address isn't being used create their own iCloud Apple ID. Then you can each sign into iCloud with your own IDs, sync contacts with iCloud, and keep them separate. To set up the new ID, open Settings, and choose the first option, "Apple, ID, iCloud, and Apps." If you're currently sharing iCloud, sign out at the bottom. Then choose to set up a new ID. Re: getting new phones tomorrow, backup questions
Well all, I do want to tell you that the iTunes bakcups worked perfectly; I discovered that the videos were stored in with my photos so were backed up fine. I did notice that apps I shared with my wife on family sharing did not download to her phone, but this was fixed easily. So if you’re going to back up your phone or phones soon, make sure you, especially if iTunes doesn’t ask, go into the file menu and select send purchases from the iPhone to the computer or whatever it is called exactly; if you don’t, you will likely not get all your apps or ringtones. Best Buy was crowded, but once we got home, setting up the new phones was almost a piece of cake. Thanks to all. Re: getting new phones tomorrow, backup questions
Hi Alan and all, My understanding is that if you do a Transfer Purchases, all your apps will be copied to iTunes. I can say, though, that sometimes it doesn't work, as I chose Transfer Purchases when backing up my phone last fall, but 112 apps weren't actually copied to the computer. So I had to restore from my iCloud backup instead. That's why I strongly recommend doing both kinds of backups. But I'm pretty sure that when you do a backup, assuming everything is working properly, all your content is copied to the backup, except the sort of items I mentioned in my last message - content designed to be redownloaded from iCloud. And if you do an encrypted backup, your passwords are copied as well. Best, Anna On Mar 7, 2015, at 5:04 PM, Alan Lemly wale...@gmail.com wrote: Anna, Thanks for this clarification. Paul, First let me state the obvious and make sure you have the password for your encrypted iTunes backup. Without it, you won't be able to restore it to your new phones. Hi, A backup backs up everything, regardless of your sync settings. some apps don't store their data in backups, such as the tracks in NatureSpace, and if you use iTunes Match, your music may not be backed up, but you can download all this again later from the relevant app. Photos and videos will be part of the iTunes backup automatically. RE: getting new phones tomorrow, backup questions
Anna, Thanks for this clarification. I had a very bad experience when advising someone about doing an iTunes backup without first syncing and none of her apps were restored with the backup. I assumed this was because she downloaded all of them on her iPhone and never synced them to her computer. Maybe it was because she never selected to transfer purchases within iTunes. Re: the sound of the new phones?
I used the classic old phone ring tone for quite some time. I used it on my iPhone 4 and it was pretty funny when my phone in my pocket would ring and people around me started to look around because we would be outside! Use to drive folks nuts! Re: the sound of the new phones?
Also, if you have any of them on the right surface, you will hear the vibration go off pretty well, at least with a 4S. I would think the sound would be the same if not better than what a 4S had. - Original Message - From: Neal Ewers To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, September 15, 2014 10:15 PM Subject: RE: the sound of the new phones? Re: the sound of the new phones?
Great minds think alike. I also use that ringtone. I've got it set to full volume in case I'm in a noisy environment, but have no problem hearing it. --- Be positive!
