Amy, just how do you type? Do you use one hand or two, one finger or two?
Do you use landscape or portrait? If you are able to type that well on the
screen I am interested in how you do it. I'm sure willing to give it a try
and see if your method works for me!

I do like the fact that I can type completely by touch without voiceover and
that I can truly use my phone, without the need of lugging around a
Bluetooth keyboard and that I can type 60 WPM on my iPhone.
Yes I make them and sell them, so this may seem a bit not quite objective,
but we all used them and gave them away for testing prior to selling them.
If they hadn't taken off, we'd have no company.
They aren't for everyone which is quite true, but then again, neither is an
iOS device. *smile* It's nice to have choices. I love my bluetooth keyboard,
especially if I'm sending a lot of very long emails, but it's not a need
anymore because of the overlay.
It's $7. Most would spend that on a meal or something, so the price point is
affordable where keyboards cost much more.

I bought both, one with lots of dots and one with few; tried and took them
off pretty soon and didn't use them since. You feel about a bit to start
with, but you get good at hitting the right spot after a while, like a good
pianist does. And if you neeed to write that much, most get a real BT
keyboard and type on that. Given the price of those overlays, and the
starting price of a BT keyboard; you're half way towards the real kb for
the cost of those bits of cutout plastic. BGut each to their own; the
TypeInBraille has complicated this question a bit too as some have got quite

efficient typists on that and transfer the text to the necesssary app after
they wrote it.

They might be good for an absolute novice, but most soon grow out of them
and it has been argued that starting on them only creates the dependence
they wouldn't otherwise have if they learnt from the beginning as-is so to

I was talking to a coworker today, who recommended that if I get a phone, I
get one of the tactile screen overlays. He said it makes it a lot easier
for him to know where to touch the screen. I realize that opinions are
probably as numerous as the number of people asked, but I thought I would
ask anyway. If you have one, as you have gotten use to using your phone,
has it gotten in the way more than helped? If so, is it easy to get off the

Hi Peter. I did contact you off list regarding your question.

We will be rolling out our tactile overlays for iPad some time around the
start of conventions or thereabouts. We are doing some major web site
overhauls currently, and we do not as of yet have a set in stone date when
they will be officially for sale, but they are coming very soon!

2012-06-18 Thread Suzanne Wilson

Hi Amy,

I think I would like to try the OtterBox Defender and would love it if you
could send one of the screen overlays for that particular case. I just have
two questions:
1. You said that the case has its own built-in screen protector. I looked
online and they referred to it as a membrane that fits over the screen. I'm
guessing that what that would mean is that, once you put on the SpeedDots
overlay, you would, in effect, have two screen protectors. Does that affect
screen sensitivity?

2. You said that your overlay doesn't peel off the OtterBox because you're
not sliding your phone in and out of a shell. Instead, your phone stays in
the shell all the time. I understand that, but how then does it fit into
the belt clip/holster? I would imagine that the back of the phone would
slide into the holster, with the screen facing out. Is that right?

Thanks so much for answering my questions. I appreciate your time.

Hi Suzanne,

Do you know what kind of case it is that you have? What name and who makes
it?

I can tell you that the screen protectors that we sell to fit over the
OtterBox Defender cases, are measured and then cut to fit them exactly.
This works though because of the design of that case. You don't have to
take
your phone out in order to use it, so the screen protector can just fit
over

the top of the case, your phone goes inside; done.
We've had other customers say similar things about the juice pack cases...
If you are constantly taking your phone in and out of a case with that
kind
of design, it can cause your protector to peal like that, especially if
it's

not on straight.
We have only ever tested our screen protectors with one other case and
that

is the Griffin, and our screen protectors will not fit them properly.

Hi Amy,

I have a question. I use a case for my iPhone 4s that has two parts: a
hard part that is like a shell into which my phone very snugly fits, and a
back belt clip that the phone and shell fit into. It's not an OtterBox,
but

it may be similar. When I bought one of the SpeedDots overlays, it very
quickly got ruined because the edge chafed against the shell when I
slipped

the phone in and out. I see that you sell overlays for the OtterBox and
wonder if you could describe how they differ from your standard ones. Do
you know if they work with cases that are similar to the OtterBox as well?
Thanks.

RE: Tactile Screen Overlay, Or Not?

2012-06-18 Thread Amy Billman
Hi Suzanne.

Yes, in general whether you're blind and using a tactile overlay, or sighted
and simply want/need to have your phone in an Otterbox Defender case, screen
sensitivity is an issue.
If you go onto Amazon and read reviews of the Otterbox Defender cases,
you'll see many folks complaining about the fact that the built-in screen
protector that's part of the OtterBox case alone, impacts screen
sensitivity.
Any distance from the phone screen itself, is going to effect the overall
sensitivity when it comes to screen contact.
That being said, we sell a lot of the Otterbox screen protectors, so it
doesn't appear to be anything that's a deal breaker for most.
It might be helpful for you if someone on this list who uses the Defender
with our screen protector can weigh in on this discussion to give you a bit
more info about overall screen sensitivity and how they feel it does or does
not impact their use of the phone.
I only can speak for what our customers say and how many we sell. I prefer
not to use that particular case because if I must have bulk on my phone, I
want it to mean something; so I either use a case that will extend my
battery life, or if I want something more low profile, I'll use the Otterbox
Impact which does not require a special cut protector and does not enclose
my phone.
It's personal preference really.

As far as sliding the phone into the belt clip, it's like a holster. You can
put your phone inside its shell in one of two ways; either slide it into the
clip with the screen side facing out or in.
Facing inward, once snapped in place, the phone is completely enclosed and
the screen isn't exposed; so you'd need to slide the belt clip off to use
the phone.
With the screen facing out, of course, if you've got it that way and you're
running around with it on your belt or something and you run through the
bushes, your protector could scratch.
I've seen folks carry it both ways. That again is a preference thing from
what I've noticed.

I'm emailing you off list about the specifics of replacing your screen
protector, because I have some additional questions for you and do not want
to clutter the list unnecessarily.

Hi, I have used the Otter Box Defender case with the iPhone 4S and the
Speed Dots protector. I don't have problems with the sensitivity of the
screen considering there are two protectors. However I'm going away from
the defender case right now, and it doesn't have to do with the speed
dots protector at all. All in all, I find the Otter Box Defender cases
very well done for the most part and do recommend them to people, but as
Amy states, each person has their own preferences on cases, screen
protectors, sensitivity, ETC.

bushes, your protector could scratch.
I've seen folks carry it both ways. That again is a preference thing from
what I've noticed.

I'm emailing you off list about the specifics of replacing your screen
protector, because I have some additional questions for you and do not want
to clutter the list unnecessarily.

I appreciate your time.

the top of the case, your phone goes inside; done.
We've had other customers say similar things about the juice pack cases...
If you are constantly taking your phone in and out of a case with that kind
of design, it can cause your protector to peal like that, especially if it's
not on straight.
We have only ever tested our screen protectors with one other case and that
is the Griffin, and our screen protectors will not fit them properly.

Hi Amy,

I have a question. I use a case for my iPhone 4s that has two parts: a
hard part that is like a shell into which my phone very snugly fits, and a
back belt clip that the phone and shell fit into. It's not an OtterBox, but

it may be similar. When I bought one of the SpeedDots overlays, it very
quickly got ruined because the edge chafed against the shell when I slipped
the phone in and out. I see that you sell overlays for the OtterBox and
wonder if you could describe how they differ from your standard ones. Do
you know if they work with cases that are similar to the OtterBox as well?
Thanks.

I do like the fact that I can type completely by touch without voiceover
and
that I can truly use my phone, without the need of lugging around a
Bluetooth keyboard and that I can type 60 WPM on my iPhone.
Yes I make them and sell them, so this may seem a bit not quite objective,
but we all used them and gave them away for testing prior to selling them.
If they hadn't taken off, we'd have no company.
They aren't for everyone which is quite true, but then again, neither is
 an
 iOS device. *smile*
It's nice to have choices. I love my bluetooth keyboard, especially if I'm
sending a lot of very long emails, but it's not a need anymore because of
 the overlay.
It's $7. Most would spend that on a meal or something, so the price point
 is
affordable where keyboards cost much more.

My boyfriend who runs the business with me and I of course have the same
iPhone, and use the same screen protector layout, and at times also have our
phones in similar cases.
This means that the only way we can actually tell them apart is by unlocking
the screen and looking at the layout of the home screen.
To make things even more interesting. His mother even though she is sighted,
keeps one of our screen protectors on her phone to use as a marketing tool.
It works surprisingly well. But when we're all together, I've almost left
with her phone instead of mine. Thankfully she doesn't use Voiceover. A very
easy clue. LOL
It would be nice to not have a house full of phones that all look the same.

I liked my phone before, but now the overlay is pretty handy. I bought both
models, because I couldn't decide. I currently have the model on with all
of the keyboard and smooth spots for fJ. I find myself using the overlay
more for orientation then speed of typing. It is kind of cool to know
exactly where the send button is or the address bar.

:) then there are those spots that I find by accident. For example, if you
move your finger on the left, just above the keyboard, you'll find yourself
at the start of an email message. When you're in that app of course.

BTW, the overlay has sped up my typing a bit, but I'm spoiled with
dictation. ;)

Hi.
Actually, we've managed to isolate all of the issues with pealing.
These are standard clear screen protectors; the exact same that your average
sighted person would use to protect their screen; just with tactile markings
embossed.
If they are applied onto a perfectly cleaned screen, and applied straight,
you have a hell of a time removing them. I speak from personal experience;
having applied hundreds at conventions.
If any screen protector with or without markings is applied correctly, you
need either very long nails or a butter knife to peal up a corner to remove
it.
Also, if you have any clients who are dissatisfied with their product, or
are complaining about the pealing, please take down the web info in my
signature and have them contact us.
We're not a huge company, so customer service is something that we have time
for and understand the importance of. *smile*
I'll work with anyone, but they have to let us know they have a problem with
the product so that we can correct the situation.

Take care.

Re: Tactile Screen Overlay, Or Not?

2012-06-16 Thread Suzanne Wilson

Re: Tactile Screen Overlay, Or Not?

2012-06-16 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Amy,

I'm not sure where this particular pealing screen protector came from. It
could have come from either Balance FBA or visionaids canada both here in
toronto, but I'm not sure where they source the things. I saw it on the phone
one day with the corners looking all ratassed and then the next week I saw the
same phone again and the screen protector was gone.

My other current client that has one of these doesn't have an issue with
pealing, but the dots are so flat I can hardly feel them myself and I'm a good
braille reader. He has sensitivity issues so a tactile screen protector
probably wasn't a good fit for him to begin with, but then he's obviously
scrubbed the dots flat trying to feel them with his sensitivity reduced fingers.

I'm guessing that the huge humidity in this area may play some part in the
pealing situation. Also the pealing client tended to leave her phone on the
charger a lot. I'm wondering if it may have been running hot more often than
the average. Or it could have been a cheep piece of dimo tape that some one
pounded out in their living room and handed off to the client. I never asked.

But I'm not really convinced that a tactile screen protector is more than
training wheels. Can't go wrong for the price, but I think it has more value
as a comfort inducer than an actual communication aid.

 Hi.
Actually, we’ve managed to isolate all of the issues with pealing.
These are standard clear screen protectors; the exact same that your average
sighted person would use to protect their screen; just with tactile markings
 embossed.
If they are applied onto a perfectly cleaned screen, and applied straight,
 you have a hell of a time removing them. I speak from personal experience;
 having applied hundreds at conventions.
If any screen protector with or without markings is applied correctly, you
need either very long nails or a butter knife to peal up a corner to remove
 it.

My boyfriend who runs the business with me and I of course have the same

This means that the only way we can actually tell them apart is by unlocking
the screen and looking at the layout of the home screen.

To make things even more interesting. His mother even though she is sighted,
keeps one of our screen protectors on her phone to use as a marketing tool.
It works surprisingly well. But when we're all together, I've almost left

It would be nice to not have a house full of phones that all look the same.

which doesn't have it a little easier because I remember where i touch on mine.
I have a 3gs and she has a 4s.

I was talking to a coworker today, who recommended that if I get a phone, I
get one of the tactile screen overlays. He said it makes it a lot easier for
him to know where to touch the screen. I realize that opinions are probably as
numerous as the number of people asked, but I thought I would ask anyway. If
you have one, as you have gotten use to using your phone, has it gotten in the
way more than helped? If so, is it easy to get off the phone? Thanks for any
opinions.

At first I didn't think I would like it, but I find that not only does
it help by making typing faster, but it also helps with other apps in
knowing where certain buttons or review areas are. You end up developing
muscle memory for the apps you use often, and it's just great all
around. The ones from Speed Dots can be removed and reapplied later if
you wish.

RE: Tactile Screen Overlay, Or Not?

2012-06-14 Thread Sandy Finley
Arnold, I have an overlay with all of the dots and I use the touch typing
method. I find it does not impair my movement around the keyboard at all.

I also think that the dots make it easier to maintain a straight line when
sliding one's finger across the home screen to find a particular app. Go to
www.speeddots.com to order. You can also buy an Otter Box Defender case
along with the overlay. It all fits on the phone well and there is no
bubbling.

You say you have both models. Where does one get them? Also, with this
overlay, can one use the touch typing method, or does the overlay prevent
sliding your finger around until you find the letter?Or perhaps, the overlay
makes it easy to find the letters, so one does not have to slide their
finger to find them? Tomorrow, I will ask my coworker to show me his phone
with this overlay on it, I do not know which overlay he has.

exactly where the send button is or the address bar.

:) then there are those spots that I find by accident. For example, if you

Re: Tactile Screen Overlay, Or Not?

2012-06-13 Thread Rebecca Ilniski
Hi all. I got one of the standard tactile overlays and find it to be
really helpful as it helped orient me to the i phone a little when I got it.

I bought the overlay but removed it after only a few days. Perhaps just a
personal preference. D

You say you have both models. Where does one get them? Also, with this
overlay, can one use the touch typing method, or does the overlay prevent
sliding your finger around until you find the letter?Or perhaps, the overlay
makes it easy to find the letters, so one does not have to slide their finger
to find them? Tomorrow, I will ask my coworker to show me his phone with
this overlay on it, I do not know which overlay he has.

 Thanks.

Hello, I had my iPhone4s for several Months before I bought mine tactile
 overlay.

I liked my phone before, but now the overlay is pretty handy. I bought both
models, because I couldn't decide. I currently have the model on with all of
the keyboard and smooth spots for fJ. I find myself using the overlay more
for orientation then speed of typing. It is kind of cool to know exactly
where the send button is or the address bar.

:) then there are those spots that I find by accident. For example, if you
move your finger on the left, just above the keyboard, you'll find yourself
at the start of an email message. When you're in that app of course.

BTW, the overlay has sped up my typing a bit, but I'm spoiled with dictation.
  ;)

Yeh, I thought they were a really nifty idea when they came out. When I
got my ITouch no one was selling them so I learned without. Now I see them
occasionally on clients' IPhones and they drive me nuts, especially when the
thing starts pealing. I still think they're a great idea, I just think they
 lose something in application.

I am so happy I decided to get the tactile overlay, it has tripled my typing
speed on the on-screen keyboard, it was a low-cost investment for a large
payback, and, if you don't like it, it's easy to remove, and with no effect on
the phone or performance . Penny

Re: Tactile Screen Overlay, Or Not?

2012-06-13 Thread Chuck Dean
I had a standard tactical screen protector on my 3GS, I found it helpful,
but I think if I were to buy another , I would get the Advanced model that
only has dots on the controls and the letters F and J.
I bought mine from Speed Dots http://speeddots.com/.

Since I upgraded to the 4S I usually dictate instead of typing, so I really
do not miss it.

BTW they attach without using any adhesive so they peel off very easily and
leave no residue.
Hope this helps,
Chuck
