RE: Seeing AI Help, entire help documentation

2018-04-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Richard graciously took the time to compile the entire Seeing AI help
documentation and posted it here yesterday. In many channels such as short
text, document, product etc. you don’t manually take a picture, the camera will
take the picture for you automatically when, for example, it sees all of a
barcode or all 4 corners of a document.

Did you read the help file?

On the ShortText, Document, Product channel, Currency, Light, and I think
Color, you do not need to take a picture, just point the camera.

On the others, once you have flicked up to the channel you want, flick left to
the take picture button and double tap.

If you’ve taught the app to recognize a particular person, their name will be

someone by selecting Face Recognition in the menu.

Seeing AI will also tell you the position of each face it detects, which can be
helpful for centering a person in the camera’s view when taking a photo.

After taking a photo, Seeing AI will give you an estimate of the person’s
facial characteristics and expressions.

If you want to take a selfie, use the button on the main screen to change to
the front-facing camera.

Teaching Seeing AI to Recognize Someone
When using the Person channel, Face Recognition can tell you who is near you.
Instead of hearing, “One face near center, 4 feet away” you’ll hear their name:
“John near center, 4 feet away”.

It’s recommended that you ask people for permission before you train Seeing AI
to recognize them. To teach Seeing AI to recognize a person’s face, open Face
Recognition in the menu. Take three photos of the person and enter their name.
We suggest asking them to take the photos of themselves.

By default, the front-facing camera is active when using Face Recognition. If
you're taking photos of someone else, switch to the back-facing camera.

Currency (preview)
This is an experimental channel, so please use caution. Currency recognition
isn’t always correct, have someone you trust confirm a note’s value.

Hold the camera over a single note to hear the estimated value.

Use the button on the main screen to select which currency should be
recognized. Let us know if you wish to recognize a currency that isn't listed —
more will be added over time.

works best.
  * The faster the beeps, the closer you are to the barcode.

Here is the help information, though the "play video" lines should be ignored

Seeing AI

Seeing AI describes the people, text, and objects around you.

Using your phone’s camera, the app says what it "sees". Seeing AI uses multiple
channels to announce different information, such as reading text or describing
faces.

On some channels, Seeing AI will automatically read what it sees. Other times
you may need to take a photo to get a description of the image.

To help you position your phone for the best results, Seeing AI can also
describe where people or objects are in the camera’s field of vision. This
feature isn’t available for all channels.

Seeing AI is an ongoing research project. To help us to improve it, please send
your feedback.

Scan your surroundings to find out how many people are around you, how close

We suggest asking them to take the photos of themselves.

By default, the front-facing camera is active when using Face Recognition. If

I believe you have to make sure to dismiss the help information which comes up
for each channel.
For short text you don't have to do aything, just hold the phone above your
document or whatever it is and it will start reading almost instantly.
The product channel will detect bar codes and there is some beeping if the
camera sees one, the faster it beeps the more of the barcode is seen and you
just have to hold still to see if it takes the picture, but it's automatic
In the Document channel taking the picture is also automatic, as soon as it
detects the 4 edges of your page or document it will take the picture.
Did you read through the help information for each channel?

what are you supposed to do then when it beeps fast, if i move it away the
beeps slow down and stop, if i move it closer the beeps stop and if i keep
it where it is, it beeps for ages and then some times will finally read the
product. luckily my son doesn't need to have baby food any more.

If you want to read mail or some printed info, use the quick text mode.
Raise your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start reading.
This is a live reading, no processing, so when it starts reading you can
pull the phone away, and it will continue reading what it saw.
To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it begins
to see the bar code. Try those two out for now.

Hello everyone,

Could someone please give me some tips on how to possibly use Seeing AI?

I've tried to get it to work a couple of times now, with absolutely no luck!
I think it's human error. I really don't know for sure though.

I tried to read a can yesterday. It wouldn't do anything. So I switched
channels and tried to read a piece of mail. Again, nothing happened.

I am holding the camera above the item, and moving the phone slowly back
and forth.

Is this how I should do it?

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Also, it might help if you can ask a sighted friend or family menber to
observe you when you try to use the Document or barcode channels, they might
be able to give you feedback which might help down the road.
All in all I still think that Seeing AI is an awesome tool offering so many
features in one app and I commend Microsoft for developing this app. The
nice thing is that Microsoft has the resources to continue development and
updates and it is probably a lot less likely to be one of those apps which
start so promising and then end in a fizzle before they disappear or simply
remain in the app store for years without updates.

You can be assured that if the bar code is in focus it will read, assuming
the code is in the data base. The fast beeping is to guide you to the code.

When using Short Text mode, the app only needs to get a quick picture of the
page. You should then either move your device away or put your hand over
the camera and just listen to it read.

Karen,
Dave is right. You need iOS 11 for the product channel to work on a 5s. You are
also missing the new Currency channel because you are on iOS 10.
So, once you replace that app, you will get both of those channels.

I am using Seeing AI on a 5S. I thought that at one time I had the Product
channel, but hadn’t used it. When I went to use it a couple of days ago, it
was not there. What I have is Short Text, Document, Person, Scene Preview,
Color Preview, Handwriting Preview., and Light.

I have not updated my phone because I have one app that is not being updated,
and I don’t want to loose the function of that app until I am very satisfied
with the app I’m replacing it with. I know that I will soon have to give in
and make the switch. But for now I am still using version 10.3.3.

I am really happy with Seeing AI. It’s not perfect, but is far better than
anything else I’ve tried.

Is the Product channel only available when using the latest IOS update? Or am
I missing something?

I'm sorry you are having trouble. I use the document channel a lot and have
about a 95 percent success rate with it reading the entire document. The times
it doesn't, I've found that either the lighting is bad, or I'm not holding the
phone correctly, or the printing is not very good.
The key with the document channel is that you have to hold the phone quite
level, have the camera pointed more or less at the center of the page, and have
it about 18 inches above the page. Plus, you need a clear contrast between the
document and the surface the document is sitting on so Seeing AI can find the
edges of the document.
If the Product channel is working some of the time, try and figure out exactly
what you did those times because that is when you got the focus on the barcode
at the right spot. I find unless there are specific reasons to use the barcode
over just knowing what something is, TapTapSee is another good choice and
sometimes faster than trying to find the barcode.

A Different Question RE: Seeing AI help

2018-04-08 Thread Karen Poulakos

If you want to read mail or some printed info, use the quick text mode. Raise
your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start reading. This is a
live reading, no processing, so when it starts reading you can pull the phone
away, and it will continue reading what it saw.
To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it begins to
see the bar code. Try those two out for now.

Hello everyone,

Could someone please give me some tips on how to possibly use Seeing AI?

I've tried to get it to work a couple of times now, with absolutely no luck! I
think it's human error.

Thank you,

Re: Seeing AI help

2018-04-03 Thread Richard Turner

When using the document channel, you really need to be about 16 to 18 inches
above the page. I am not sure why, but I have about 99 percent success rate at
that height, which is about 6 inches higher than KNFB reader needs.
It does help to start with the camera centered on the page, and then slowly
rase it up as straight as you can.
You also want to make sure there is a good contrast between the surface the
document is on, and the document. So, if it is a standard white piece of paper,
you don't want the surface to be a light color or it will be hard for Seeing AI
to determine the edge of the document.
I've found that with the product channel if you start again with the camera
against the product and slowly pull away, it usually works well at about 8 to
12 inches away.

Richard

Let me add that many, many times this is what will happen: I will hold the

RE: Seeing AI help

2018-04-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I suggest you try this when a sighted person is around, take an easy document,
something that's just plain print rather than some complicated magazine page
where you might deal with colours and poor contrast and all that. Then put the
phone lens down on the document, open the app, select the document channel and
then raise the phone straight up away from the page until the phone is about a
foot or a bit more above.
A sighted person can then see if you are moving straight up or sideways etc.
and correct you. They can also let you know if you are still too close to the
page or too far away. I have very good spacial awareness and a very good sense
of what 12 or 16 inches is, I do woodworking and if you give me a piece of wood
or a box I can typically tell you within an inch or two how large the piece of
wood or the box is, but of course not everybody has that ability and you may
need to use other methods to know how high to hold the phone etc.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hello Sieghard,

Yes, I do believe that my camera lens is clean.

And no, I've never gotten Seeing AI to work.

However, I have a money reader App on my phone. It seems to work just fine. I
had a little bit of a problem the other day. But I was able to work it out.

I guess if it works for her sometimes then permission for the app to use the

Let me add that many, many times this is what will happen: I will hold the
phone a foot above a document on the "document" channel (with proper lighting);
Seeing AI will take a picture immediately; and come back with "no text
recognized". There are normal documents I have tried this on ten times in
succession with no luck.

Hi Andy,

Oh no, I understand why you asked the question. But yes, I did give it

Now there may be an issue with the lighting, and I did wonder about
this. I don't have the best lighting in my apartment. Plus, I have no

is about an inch of paper sticking out at the bottom of the phone and the same
on the left side of the phone. I then opened Seeing AI, switched to the
document channel and then raised the phone up about a foot above the document.
Seeing AI immediately told me to hold still, the picture was taken
automatically and I had an almost perfect scan.

Sieghard

Let me add that many, many times this is what will happen: I will hold the
phone a foot above a document on the "document" channel (with proper lighting);
Seeing AI will take a picture immediately; and come back with "no text
recognized". There are normal documents I have tried this on ten times in
succession with no luck.

I have used Seeing AI since August 2017, and have had a maybe 50%
success rate. I've had a number of people on lists insist that this is
human error, but I have also had sighted people test it with similarly
bad results.

If you want to read mail or some printed info, use the quick text mode. Raise
your phone up slowly from the printed text and it will start reading. This is
a live reading, no processing, so when it starts reading you can pull the phone
away, and it will continue reading what it saw.
To read bar codes go to product mode, and it will beep faster as it begins to
see the bar code. Try those two out for now.

Re: Seeing AI help

2018-04-03 Thread Steve Matzura
Using any application that purports to read printed text is always a
trial-and-error situation. It took me half an hour to find the bar code
on a can one day. This is not abnormal. One never knows just where bar
codes are.

There's also the matter of contrast between the text one wishes to read
and the background color of the label or piece of paper upon which said
text is printed.

Lighting is another key factor. Even though the phone has a flash, other
things in the local environment could interfere.

Just keep at it. For best results in the short documenchannel, hold the
phone about a foot above what you want to read. The application should
signal you as to whether you are focused on the page so it can see all
four corners. The document and bar code channels read automatically. The
longer document channel requires you click (double-tap) the on-screen
"take picture" button.

Hope this helps.
