Re: Smart Beatle 14-Cell Braille Display

2017-01-12 Thread Scott Davert
Hmmm. Maybe this is indeed continuing on some displays, but not others. I have
not had it happen since 10.02 as far as I can remember. Would be curious what
other models of displays people are seeing this behavior on. Also, how often
does it happen? I'm currently running a vefreshabraille and am not seeing it at
all. I've switched jobs, so am not able to test on different models of
displays. I'd test it now on my Edge, but as I wrote earlier, I'm still waiting
for them to give me a RMA. I first tried contacting them Jan 3.

Hi Dulce.

As long as you are comfortable with 14 cells, it's not a bad option at all. The
keyboard is a bit less angular than what you would be used to on the Braille
Sense, which took me some adjusting, but not something that bothered me after
the first day of use. I sometimes find that iOS does strange things with
braille translation, but that it's no more or less because of the braille
display. One thing I will warn you of, and this may not apply to you if you are
not in North America, is that if you need to get the Smart Beetle repaired,
HIMS Support has gotten much worse in the past year. For example, I asked for a
RMA about 10 days ago to return a Braille Edge, and they still have not
returned either my email or phone call. I still hear of people who have some
good experiences with their support, but I'm hearing more bad things than good
these days.

I did a review on the Smart Beetle, feel free to read it and ask any other
questions you may have.

Hi Alia.
Your experiences when coparing Baum to HIMS support are the same as mine. In
somewhat a defense of HIMS, they probably have more units to service since
their devices have been around longer. Nonetheless, it really seems that
after the last president of the North American office left in the summer
that things took a nose dive. Not sure what's up with that exactly, but I
hope they fix things. They were at the top of their game not long ago, in my
opinion.

I had the braille edge 40 and found out braille cells aren’t covered under
the warranty, so sent it back. I tried contacting them about a few things,
and they literally *never* responded! now I have the varioultra and
bahumUSA literally fixed my unit on the day before thanksgiving, gave me
emails what they fixed, and sent it back, on a holiday. I had it back by
the week after thanksgiving. It is literally never been an hour between
the time I email them and the time they respond, and I have even had
conversations with some of them while they were making their dinner.

RE: Smart Beatle 14-Cell Braille Display

2017-01-12 Thread Richard Turner
Yes, HIMS was among the best for support.

I have not seen the prototypes of the Orbit 20, but I have my name in with the
NFB store to get one to check out when they are released.

My Braille Edge display died recently and when it was going to cost $2300 to
repair it, I decided to wait for the Orbit 20 and if that doesn’t meet my
needs, I think I will look at the Vario Ultra 20.

I have seen all the rest through my work.

Hi Richard.
I finally just heard back from them and replied immediately. I'm hoping now
that I'm on their radar, things will start to move. I have to say, as someone
who handles a lot of braille displays from many different companies, that HIMS
used to be decent in terms of support, but that it seems to have started to
decline last summer. Fraedon Scientific, Humanware, and APH have all processed
support requests I've submitted on behalf of consumers within 48 hours. It's
just sad, because HIMS has made good hardware.
As for the Orbit Reader, yes, I'm also looking forward to it. It's a well built
product and does what it says it will fairly well as far as I could tell from
the prototypes I saw. All for the price of half a Smart Beetle, 1/3 of a Focus,
etc. And with more cells!

I don’t need a full note taker and if the Orbit does come out at around $500, I
could replace it a couple of times for the price of the least expensive note

RE: Smart Beatle 14-Cell Braille Display

2017-01-12 Thread Richard Turner
Support has gotten worse.
If you leave them a voice mail, it is sometimes a long time before you hear
from them, if at all. I’m talking up to a couple of weeks.
If you send an Email, and if you don’t hear back in a couple days, send another
one, then you are more likely to get a reply.

I’m anxiously awaiting the Orbit 20 from APH.

I don’t need a full note taker and if the Orbit does come out at around $500, I
could replace it a couple of times for the price of the least expensive note
taker.

Blind Bargains is selling two gently used Smart Beatle 14-cell Braille displays
with one year warranties. Do any of you have experience with this display? I
have a Hims OnHand and like the feel of the Braille. Is this display prone to
repairs?
