RE: unlocking a locked iPhone
Finally, I write with a happy end to my unlocking a locked Iphone saga. After the second try at filling out the online form for at, they did unlock the phone. Apple verified the phone was unlocked. Yet, Verizon insisted it was still locked. After hearing my story, David at the apple accessibility desk asked the question which turned out to be the key to the solution. He asked if I had updated the drivers on the Iphone. Of course I had not, that thought was lite years from my mind!!! I downloaded the latest itunes for windows 7 and went as far as I could before encountering a password error. Yesterday, Patrick from the apple accessibility desk remoted in to my computer, cuz jaws was not reading everything that I needed, got me well on my way to restoring the phone in itunes. Unfortunately, at some point in the process, my computer locked up. Patrick had tried to call back, but my friend had her phone on "do not disturb" and didn't realize it. Finally, when I was emotionally spent and mentally exhausted, I turned my phone over to the genius bar and begged them to put me out of my misery once and for all!! They did not disappoint!! Sometimes, it really does take a village to get an Iphone that comes from a different carrier than the one u r using, to work as it should. To that end, I sincerely thank you, the apple accessibility team, and the local apple genius, who admitted he had never worked with voiceover till he saw my phone, for making this used SE work as I had been lead to believe it would by the seller. A couple of the access techs said they often encounter situations similar to mine as the phone carriers really don't deal with the workings of the Iphones. In conclusion, my takeaways, which I hope will benefit others who find themselves in similar situations are: 1. The IMEI number is invaluable. With that number alone, Apple Accessibility can tell you whether the device you are considering purchasing is locked or unlocked. And, if it is locked, they can tell you what carrier has it locked. The IMEI number is located in the "about section of the general menu in settings. 2. Apple can not unlock a phone that is locked by a carrier such as AT While you might find an online form to request an unlock, the carrier in question may deny the request, especially if there is a balance due on the account, stolen phone, etc. So, use that IMEI number to get the unvarnished truth from Apple before you waste your hard earned money. If Apple says it's locked, insist that the seller take care of unlocking it. 3. If you feel your carrier is giving you mixed messages such as telling you your phone is locked, when you have verified that it's not, or in some other way trying to sell you one of their specific phones, consult the Apple Accessibility desk for troubleshooting assistance before allowing yourself to be talked in to buying something you may not need or want. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Saturday, February 29, 2020 12:45 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: unlocking a locked iPhone Yes, you have to remove the case. On the right side of the phone a little more than two inches from the bottom, there is a tiny pinhole, the end of a bent paperclip works to push in until the SIM card drawer sticks out. Be very careful to get the sim card inserted in the right orientation. It has been so long since I've done that, I'm not sure how to describe it. This is where sighted help would be very useful. After putting the sim card in the little drawer, just push it in until it is flush. Needless to say, you want the phone turned off when doing this. Re: unlocking a locked Iphone
Hello, Sometimes, it takes a bit of time for the IMEI to show up as unlocked after it has been locked. It is worth sticking a sim in and seeing what happens if you have followed the process and are unlocked. =Thanks. On Fri, Feb 28, 2020 at 8:56 PM kitty hevener wrote: > Dennis, Was your phone an at? Re: unlocking a locked Iphone
Actually we've unlocked all 4 of our se phones, 2 of the phones were unlocked from t-mobile, the third phone was unlocked from consumer cellular and the 4th phone was unlocked from straight talk so when we ended service with straight talk we could use it on consumer cellular. Depending on the carrier you might have to wait a certain amount of time before you can unlock the phone. for example with some carriers, even if you get the phone paid off, for example as for one carrier with straight talk you have to wait a year. So it's just a matter of asking your carrier. - Original Message - From: "kitty hevener" To: Sent: Thursday, February 27, 2020 8:35 AM Subject: RE: unlocking a locked Iphone Yes, sadly, I learned the importance of the imei after the fact. RE: unlocking a locked Iphone
Question about locked phones. I bought a phone and am on a 30-month AT contract. I know, a lot of people don't like those contracts, but this seemed like a good deal. I can be patient, know it won't last forever. So my question is, will my phone be locked with AT in 31 months, when I might want to return to Consumer Cellular? Or I eventually might want to sell my phone? -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Cristóbal Muñoz Sent: Wednesday, February 26, 2020 1:06 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: unlocking a locked Iphone No kidding. If you can, return the phone and get your money back. I've bought iPhones on buy/sell mailing lists and eBay and have always had good luck. I always make sure that the description states that it's unlocked or have the seller provide me with the IMEI so I can check compatibility/status on my carrier. If eBay, I can usually tell by the feedback and what else the seller has posted if it's an individual seller or it's someone who flips phones. A professional flipper is not going to burn themselves over one sale, so I'm less concerned about that. Small consolation now I know, but just something to keep in mind for the future. unlocking a locked Iphone
I purchased an Iphone that was advertised as unlocked. Seller assured me it would work with my carrier, Verizon. Sadly, Verizon informed me that the phone was locked and they said it could only be unlocked by carrier was using. Does anyone know of any workaround for getting it unlocked?
