RE: IOS latest

I’ve noticed one thing with 10.3.2; when you are in the phone app and bring up
the keypad; they aren’t any corresponding letters with the numbers. Has anyone
else noticed this with the latest IOS update?

RE: IOS latest

2017-05-29 Thread Mike Ulrich
Well my 5S took a dirt nap yesterday; I unbeknownst to me, knocked in the
kitchen sink while doing some multi tasking cooking!

So once I get a brandie new SE today, I’ll be sure to check that, although on a
new phone it might not be a problem?

Thanks for getting back to me though.

RE: AirPods versus the free EarPods

2017-05-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have tried Airpods at an Apple Store and spend a good 15 minutes listening to
various types of music as well as a bit of an audio book. I agree that they
sound slightly better than Earpods, but I wouldn’t say that is a “Wow
experience” type difference and the fit is exactly the same, think of the
earpods with the cable cut off at the end of the little plastic part that
sticks down.
It’s interesting how perception differs, I think the wired Apple Earpods are by
far the best sounding earbuds that are not noise-isolating and especially in
that price range. I also have a pair of $200 V-Mota over the ear headphones
with beautiful soft leather earcups and they sound great, but they definitely
don’t sound 6 times as good. I have a feeling if you don’t like Earpods that
Airpods may also not be to your liking and you might want to look at something
like the new Beats X which are actually a bit less expensive and they have a
cord/cable connecting the two earbuds and there is a fully functional remote
built into this cable whereas with Airpods all you can do is to answer/hang up
a call, invoke SIRI and pause playback by taking them out of your ear, there is
no way to control volume unless you bring up SIRI to raise or lower the volume.
Otherwise you have to use the iPhone itself for volume, skip/rewind, play/pause
etc.
I am definitely waiting to see what the next generation of Airpods bring, I’m
pretty sure they’ll also come out with the second generation this fall and
hopefully Apple for once listened to what the customers want which definitely
is volume control and at least the basic functions of rewind and skip and I’d
love to see a small hole molded in the plastic which would allow you to connect
a cord so it’s not quite as easy to loose one. And of course Apple could make
said cord in 10 different colours for 5 Cents, sell it as the “Aircord” for
$9.99 and add a bit more cash to the quarter trillion Dollars they already have
on hand.

Sieghard

Hi Mary,

I pretty much agree with Michael. I love the AirPods. They sound just as good
as my Bose headphone did. The batteries last for about 5 hours which isn't too
bad. My husband also says that he can't hear them much when they are in my
ears, so they are pretty quiet for that. Hope this helps you a bit.

I just use one airpod at a time so i can still interact with the outer world.
Airpods mean no dangling wires. The only situation where i use wired earpods is

Re: AirPods versus the free EarPods

2017-05-29 Thread Mary Otten
Regarding the BeatsX, so they are earbuds? My understanding of the beats in
general is that they are very bass heavy. So what was your impression of these
beats X for sound? And how do they fit differently then EarPods? If there are
things that you stick actually in your ear canal, that is a showstopper. I hate
those, and they cut off the outside world, not what I need in this situation.

Re: AirPods versus the free EarPods

2017-05-29 Thread Michael Feir
Hi Mary. I have both the free earpods and the airpods. The sound is
somewhat better on the Airpods. I think that due to the W1 chip and their
independent battery power. I notice more bass with them. The microphones
work very well for calls and conversations but I wouldn't use them for
serious recording.

What you're really buying with Airpods is convenience and portability. The
case can cary enough extra charge to keep the airpods going for a day. Each
airpod lasts around 5 hours on a ful charge but they charge very quickly.
You can stick one in the case to charge it up and keep using the other one.
After one's fully charged, switch airpods and charge the other. I can get
them to both end up at around 96% doing it that way. Alternatively, just
stick them both in the case and take a ten to fifteen minute break and
they'll both get a good enough charge to keep them going for at least a
couple hours.

It takes some getting used to but overall, I very much like my Airpods.
I'll be keenly interested to hear what Apple does for the next generation
of this product. Presuming they keep working, I think I'll be happy with
them for years. They don't take much power to charge up. Also, they don't
fall out of your ears like I worried they might. That depends on one's ear
shape. I'd never wear them while navigating outdoors. Aftershokz bone
conduction headsets are much safer for that. Also, if one did fall while
you were outdoors, it might be difficult to find without sight.

Re: AirPods versus the free EarPods

2017-05-29 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks to those who have replied to my inquiry thus far. I'm not too worried
about them falling out, since I would never use them outdoors. Indeed, I'm only
contemplating them because I'm going to be stuck in one place for several hours
at a time, and I think that's too much for my lovely over the ear headphones.
Plus, those tend to isolate you from the outside, which isn't a good deal, when
you're trying to communicate with medical personnel from time to time.

AirPods versus the free EarPods

2017-05-29 Thread Mary Otten

Sent hi all,
I am considering the possible purchase of AirPods. I don't like earr buds in
general and I have never been impressed with the EarPods the Apple include with
its phone. For those of you who have both, are the AirPods really better? Or is
it just nice electronics with the same old less than wonderful sound? I have
great headphones. But they cover the ears, and I don't think I want to wear
them for hours on end.

Re: IOS latest

2017-05-29 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello, sorry for my apparent ignorance, but why would you want corresponding
letters on a phone keypad? As far as I know, these are announced as part of
VoiceOver's "speak hints" facility, so these need to be turned on in order to
hear them in the first place. Anything else? Well I don't know, hence my
apparent ignorance. Thanks for trying to enlighten me.

Re: AirPods versus the free EarPods

2017-05-29 Thread Alan Lemly
I'm with Sieghard on this topic and expect that where earphones are concerned,
there are as many differing opinions as those expressing them. I think the
wired earpods sound great and much prefer them over a set of Bose headphones
that I have for both sound and comfort.

Good luck at coming up with something that works for you.

Re: iPad pro if one already has an iPhone.

2017-05-29 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hello, personally it is worth getting the iPad if you are blind. Larger screens
means easier navigation and better typing, still a bluetooth keyboard will
always be the best I now think thanks to my own acquisition of the Magic
Keyboard from Apple. Also, take account of the sound quality, although it may
not matter with the iPhone 6 and later.

Deleting a folder.

2017-05-29 Thread cmohney1961
Good afternoon all.
I'm using an iPhone 6s. I have things arranged in folders. Is there any way
to delete a folder without having to delete each app individually? Thank you
for your assistance.

Re: AirPods versus the free EarPods

2017-05-29 Thread Robin Frost
Hi Sieghard,
thanks for mentioning the Beats x I’ll have to check them out. I think I’m the
only person who can’t wear the earpods that ship with iPhones and thus I
suppose by extension the air pods as they’re just not comfortable in my wee
ears no matter what I do.

Subject: RE: AirPods versus the free EarPods

Hello, everyone.

A friend of mine from Germany is visiting the U.S. for a few weeks and

the States, and my phone plan does not allow me to phone a German
mobile phone at a low cost. We are considering FaceTime or WhatsApp

heard reports that its address book sharing can introduce malware into
the iPhone. I have no idea if these reports are credible. Does
anyone have any experience with comparing FaceTime and WhatsApp in a
scenario such as the one I have described? Note that we are not
interested in exchanging any video component, just voice data.

Thank you for all help.

RE: WhatsApp or FaceTime: Keeping up with a Friend from Germany

2017-05-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have had Whats App on my iPhone for many years and while I don't use it a lot
I never had any issues.
In any case, if Facetime is an option then why not use it, it's already there
on your phone without installing anything else, you can use SIRI to ask to call
somebody either using Facetime or Facetime Audio and you can use iMessage. OK,
I guess since iOS 10 you can also use SIRI to ask to call somebody via Whats
App, but still I would use Facetime if all parties who need to call or be
called have an iPhone.
Tell your german friend "Sieghard aus Steinau sagt Hallo".
Is she blind? Just curious because if she is she may have gone to the German
Secondary School for the Blind in Marburg where I also went and did my Grade 13.

RE: WhatsApp or FaceTime: Keeping up with a Friend from Germany

2017-05-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Now regarding sound quality I think that is subjective, personally I can't tell
a difference in quality whether it's Facetime Audio, Whats App or Skype. Where
you can tell a huge difference is if you send a voice message via Whats App and
via iMessage. I really can't understand why Apple who normally are all about
quality and sound quality especially make iMessages sound like you are
listening to a message recorded on an old micro tape answering machine. Whats
App messages sound perfect and one of my friends in Germany and I always use
Facetime when we want to talk just because we both have iPhones and it seems
the natural thing to do, but if we leave each other a voice message we use
Whats App just because iMessage sounds so horrible. Apple should really be
ashamed that they haven't improved this after having introduced the feature I
think 3 years ago now or maybe it was already in iOS 7 which was 4 years ago.

I never tried to compare the data usage to know if it uses more or less data.

Subject: WhatsApp or FaceTime: Keeping up with a Friend from Germany

Hello, everyone.

A friend of mine from Germany is visiting the U.S. for a few weeks and has
brought her iPhone with her. She does not have a data plan for the States, and
my phone plan does not allow me to phone a German mobile phone at a low cost.
We are considering FaceTime or WhatsApp as a way to keep in touch. I am rather
wary of WhatsApp since I have heard reports that its address book sharing can
introduce malware into the iPhone. I have no idea if these reports are
credible. Does anyone have any experience with comparing FaceTime and WhatsApp
in a scenario such as the one I have described? Note that we are not
interested in exchanging any video component, just voice data.

Thank you for all help.

Craig

A Google search for “accessible Apple TV user guide” gave me the following link
as the first search result:
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/accessibility/tv
Once the page loads and if you don’t want to read any of what’s there, just
pull up all the links with Jaws Key+F7 (if you use Jaws that is) and look for
the link “See the Apple TV User Guide”.

RE: making voice over louder

Yes, the start VO reading and then use of the arrow keys to change volume for
me has never worked to change the VO volume relative to other sounds; it only
turns up the general volume of everything. Strange I know, since so many
others recommend this method.

If she cannot do the rotor, the first thing I would have her do is go into the
VoiceOver settings, Audio, and turn on audio ducking.
That way, other audio volumes will be lowered while VoiceOver is talking. That
may help a little.
Otherwise, other than the medthod you described by starting VoiceOver reading
and hitting the up volume button is the best way to turn it up.
Or, have someone else check that Volume is in the rotor, have them turn the
rotor to volume and flick up with one finger until it is at 100%. You may get
some distortion at that point, but she could see if that helps.
Or, if she has a Bluetooth keyboard, the rotor can be done by pressing the
right arrow plus the up arrow to turn it clockwise, or left arrow plus up arrow
to turn counter clockwise.

HTH,
Richard

How do you turn up voice over? I thought it was starting reading and up volume.
I have a friend who is having difficulty getting voice over turned up, and she
cannot do the motion for the rotor. Thanks for any help. Maybe I am telling her
an incorrect way to do this?

Just a point of clarification...You can turn volume up and down ..pause ...

RE: AirPods versus the free EarPods

2017-05-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Peter,

Yes, I did mention you can ask SIRI to adjust volume, but to me that is not
enough. I tried this in the store when I tried the Airpods and what I can do
with my little in-line remote on the Earpods in 1.5 or 2 seconds takes me 10
seconds on the Airpods using SIRI especially if you don’t get it right the
first or second time, you have to each time get SIRI to listen and tell it to
increase or lower the volume or try with a percentage. Also, there are just
situations when, for example, I might be sitting somewhere quiet waiting like
maybe at a doctor’s office when I might listen to music or a book and I’d feel
pretty stupid if I had this little conversation with SIRI like “Increase
volume”, “Increase volume”, “Increase volume” or “Set volume to 60%” then if
it’s too much or not enough “Increase volume” or “Set volume to 70%” etc.
For what Apple charges for these things they simply should have these controls,
I am definitely not the only one who thinks so and I can almost guaranty that
they will have these control in generation 2 or 3, it’s just a matter of time.

Just out of curiocity, what is with the double period at the end of eeach
sentence, do you put it there on purpose or is it something that happens when
dictating or typing on a bluetooth keyboard?

Sieghard
