Optusnet ADSL Broadband
Hi Everyone Have any of you managed to connect your Mac to Optusnet ADSL Broadband ? I have used Optusnet Dial-up for some years and found the service good. Recently I decided my phone bill was getting too high and I investigated the possibility of changing my internet access to Optusnet Broadband. I was surprised to learn that Optusnet does not support Macintosh. The modem they supply (D-Link DSL-302G) is compatible with both Macs PCs but the CD supplied by Optus with the modem contains only the Manual PC Driver, They do not send the Mac driver which is included if you don't buy the modem through Optus.. On the other hand, the D-Link web site indicates that if the ethernet port is used, no driver is needed for Macs. I am a novice in this broadband business and am somewhat confused. I know I can change ISPs but I have been quite happy with Optus and don't especially want to change my email address. Or, is there a fix ? Thank you for any advice Regards John Weekes -- John Weekes 13 / 244 Mill Point Road South Perth6151 +61 8 9367 5310

Re: Optusnet ADSL Broadband
Morning, ISP providers will usually reneg on Mac support at some point as an area of least use, and we do not have facilities to quantify problems. So, easiest solution is to offer no support and that way we cannot get persecuted for breach of contract later. An ADSL connection is usually taken care of by the modem, so all you have to do is connect to the modem. But, saying that remember it is an open door, make sure you have the firewall initiated on modem and preferably a specific gateway, firewall and/or router between modem and your machines which again has firewall initiated, standard issue on OS X. The connection to modem or gateway firewall router is usually an ethernet connection or wireless. Do not be pit off by the lack of support as with TCP/IP, PC or MAC have same connection and the MAC is generally a lot easier to problem solve than the PC thanks to UNIX/ LINUX technologies and OS X ease of use. http://www.optusnet.com.au/help/dsl/connected These are the numbers you will need to add to your System Preferences / Network config and the modem is supplied by Optusnet should be set to get you started and once you have the concept sorted comeback and re-install and change configs for your modem and network from default. A very simple but necessary operation to just make sure everything is secure as you can make it. Firewall is a specific machine or software that opens and closes ports to allow data that is controlled through that port access or not. ADSL is an open network connection to your provider that could be compromised. external HDD questions
Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone had any advice about installing an external firewire drive. My dual processor G4 has the ports, so I was wanting to get a 250gig HDD from PLE computers for around $190, and an external firewire/usb2 case too ,a nd build my own. I want to use it for backup. I’m wondering if OS9.2 will deal with, or even see it? And thoughts would be appreciated. Apple has the same thing for around $400. Thanx Mike -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Useful iPod utility
Yesterday I tried iPod Util (download from http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14715. It gave me access to songs as well as voice memos. I also tried iPod Viewer (download from http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15864. It gave me access to voice memos and items saved to my iPod as an external hard-drive that I thought I had deleted, but not to songs. They're both good, but iPod Util is a bit fiddly in that every track shows up and you have to uncheck the tracks that you don't want to copy across. Michael.

Yes I did notice that the new version of PodUtil (2.5) doesn't appear to be as flexible out of the box as previous versions. In previous versions there was a button Select None which overrode the default behaviour of selecting all songs etc to be copied. I notice in version 2.5 that there is a contextual menu option Select None, but it doesn't appear to work for me (maybe this is one of the Advanced options available on registering). if you can get your hands on the earlier 2.0 version you will be able to avoid this issue. Hope this helps. Cheers, Matt.

Not being a unix guru or even a Mac guru I seem to have had all sorts of problems , mainly to do with sending (outgoing) mail servers. yes it is variable backpacker hostels tend to be quite cool and often don't charge, Hotels can vary from easy and cheap to impossible and expensive, In Japan the best places I found was Parisian Cafe in Kyoto where you just walked in ordered a coffee and got free internet access... OK so you had to buy a drink or snack which wasn't cheap but no cafe in Japan is cheap (but then they knew their coffee none of that brewed American style cra... er stuff... which was all you could get at most cafes there) Taito Ryokan, Tokyo - unlimited wireless internet plus hire of a mobile phone for 3000 Yen (about $35) a week which works out free if you were there for the full week as it came with 3000 Yen credit on the phone. Re: Innocent abroad :-(
Malcolm J McCallum wrote: Hi everyone. [..big Internet café sob story deleted..] grin Ok, so, the problem that Malcolm is really describing with his Internet saga is that he is unable to send email. There are two ways of resolving that, but I need to provide a little background first. Sending email in an email program generates a request to a mail server to send and email out to the person you wish to get the message to. After the Green Card affair in the early '90s we got introduced to SPAM. At that time you could generally connect to any mail server from anywhere and send email to someone. These days that is no longer the case. The simplest way to reduce SPAM is to ensure that only known users are allowed to use the email gateway. From an ISP perspective the easiest way to achieve that is to only allow people who connect to the Internet from their service to use their email server. When you're in an Internet café, you're most likely not connected to the Internet via your normal ISP connection, thus you are prevented from sending email using their server. As I said, there are two ways of resolving that: 1. Find an email server that provides another way of authenticating you. 2. Bring your own email server along. Option 1 means that you need to ask your ISP if they have a mail server that you can connect to while roaming, and from memory, WestNet has one of those [they do indeed, read on :-) ] Option 2 means that you need to install a mail server, like exim, postfix, sendmail or 20 other options. You should note that Option 2 will at some times give you grief because ISPs are now beginning to block email coming from anything other than registered domains and mailing lists such as WAMUG use SPAM filters which use blocking lists that block email from known spammers - I put that in quotes, see below for why :-) So, in this case and in most cases, it's simpler to get your ISP to assist you with a means of authenticating yourself against their mail-server, either using SSH, secure-SMTP or what ever scheme they've dreamt up. Finally, I shall even provide you with some links: * http://www.google.com/search?q=westnet+roaming+mailserversafe=off * http://www.westnet.com.au/support/setup/ Which state that: * * **Roaming Mail Server* (for use when not connected to WestNet) * Mail/POP3/SMTP/POST/Incoming and Outgoing * Mail server: mailr.westnet.com.au * Username: Full email address * Password: Email address password As for the known spammers - some block lists - like the one used by WAMUG will also block infected computers, even if they are on a corporate network that affects a whole country, so users like me will have their mail blocked because some other user on the network has an infected PC and the network operator has no mechanism to separate out legitimate actual email, from a user like me who runs their own server and from an infected machine that sends out many megabytes of SPAM. So in the past I used option 2, and now I use both option 2 and 1, in that my mail server sends the mail to the Optus mail server. So, there you have it. There are two ways of resolving that, but I need to provide a little background first. Onno wrote: As I said, there are two ways of resolving that: 1. Re: iMac G5
I am not sure about the number of problems some users appear to be having - Apple has not issued any recalls or Logic board fixes to my knowledge. However, from my very limited experience of purchasing a single iMac G5 17 the machine has performed flawlessly - I'd recommend it anytime. -Mart From: Bob Jackson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 12 May 2005 19:26:55 +0800 To: WAMUG Mailing List wamug@wamug.org.au Subject: iMac G5 I am seriously considering buying a new super drive iMac G5 17. However it is disconcerting to read so many reports of the original iMacs G5 being effected by faulty midplanes and power supplies. Does anybody know whether these defects have been rectified in the latest machines? Thanks. Re: iMac G5
From what I heard, It was the the first wave of iMac G5's that had issues as Apple had part shortages and grabbed them from anywhere. This issue was rectified after these models shipped and Apple US had PSU recalls at Apple Centre's. There is a discussion about it somewhere but it was regarding models shipping in the first December I think?? Anyway the more recent ones doesn't have the issue.
