2004-11-03 Thread Keith Palmer

Excuse the intrusion but I thought I'd send out a mass mail as I've received
numerous enquiries as to what I'm up to.

As you are aware Greg Satti purchased Zytech at the end of April and since then
we've been developing what we term the WA Online project (which by chance has sort
of become the WA NT Online project) whose catchphrase is -
Building information bridges for Western Australian Communities.

Bunbury Online is the initial rollout of the WA Online project so please take a
look at this first-up site at -
http://www.bunburyonline.com

We've secured domain registration in the form of Town Online for the
following Western Australian centres -
Broome, Bunbury, Busselton, Carnarvon, Collie, Coral Bay, Dampier, Derby,
Esperance, Exmouth, Fremantle, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Kununurra,
Mandurah, Manjimup, Margaret River, Moora, Northam, Perth, Port Hedland and
Wyndham and additionally Alice Springs and Darwin in the Northern Territory.

In early 2005 WA Online will rollout Busselton Online and Alice Springs Online
(and possibly Darwin Online).

The Busselton site, whilst being modelled on the existing Bunbury site will
employ a far broader range of online facilities including an Online
Accommodation Booking service, e-commerce store-builder, tour guides, events,
attractions, food and restaurants as well as car and flight bookings.

Alice Springs and Darwin are contracted sites and will be owned by local Aboriginal
Corporations who will operate these sites as a commercial business unit. These
sites will feature an online guide to Aboriginal organisations, Government offices
and health services. The centrepiece of each site will be an online Art
Craft shopping Centre where each Corporation will sell their own art worldwide but
also have the facility to rent out space within their art centre to other
operators, and thus produce a new revenue stream. Struggling Aboriginal artists
will receive regular contract income for their paintings, and other positions
within the business operations are created for other persons.

WA Online creates each Town Online site as an individual, standalone website
rather than simply being a subset of a national or statewide site. We term
these national models as top-down design whilst we describe our operation as a
bottom-up model. That means we provide individual servers for each location
ensuring that each site has the fastest possible access times and search
speeds. Neither does a user need to navigate down through a series of steps to
reach a local, regional WA location only to find there's no or little local
information or suffer a system crash on the way.

W've also spent a great deal of time on search engine visibility and in an extremely
short period we have raced up the charts. Already on Google in a search for
Bunbury webcam, Bunbury Online holds 18 of the first 19 returned listings including every
single one of the 10 listings on page 1 of the Google.com results.

Please take a look at the Bunbury site if you have any feedback or
questions I'd love to hear from you. The webcam is a little slow at the moment
whilst we transition our ADSL plan (Telstra have come onboard as a major
sponsor) but if you check back in a couple of weeks you should see that you are
getting the full streaming potential of the webcam. For those that are
interested the camera is an Axis 2130R which prior to the release of the latest
top-of-the-line Sony camera was probably as good as you could get.

In the meantime if you feel you have an appropriate business or organisation
listing suitable to the Bunbury area or would like to buy or sell online,
please make use of the Bunbury Online services - they're FREE !!

All the best and thanks for the various enquiries and good wishes received over
the past few months.

Re: Power adapter

2004-09-02 Thread Keith Palmer

Hi Peter

We are bringing some in from Taiwan that will be AUS$65 inc GST. They
are probably 1-2 weeks away at this stage (thanks to Taiwan's recent
typhoon). Both Greg @ Zytech and Daniel @ MacWizardry will be carrying
this product. We'll also have some generic-style power adaptors
available as well and these will be cheaper again.

I am hoping to buy another AC power adapter for my TiPB 15in 867. The
Apple store ones are very expensive when factoring the exchange rate,
GST and shipping costs.

Are there alternatives available here? Any experiences to relate?
I found one at ClubMac in the USA, an MCE Portable AC Power Adapter
for $US43.99. I can have it shipped to me via my sister in Seattle. [I
am aware of the 3 pin plug thing but that is not an issue.]

So, does anyone have one of these adapters? Any experiences to relate?
also, any comments on ClubMac as a retailer?
Thanks

Re: Maxtor OneTouch backup drive

2004-05-20 Thread Keith Palmer
I should point out my comments are about Maxtor external FireWire
drives specifically. I don't know how they've designed their bridge
but they've had all sorts of problems.

Some of the newer, big Maxtor (BARE) drives have had good comments such
as the SATA drives that Craig is using but BEWARE the 80 120 in the
unit you mention. I've just had a look at the spec sheet for the
one-touch backup drive and it is a real joke. It appears that pressing
the button launches Retrospect Express which ships with the drive.

You get charged a premium price for pressing the button rather than
your mouse.

Hi Cal

There are some really bad user reviews for these units. I'd also be
very wary of Maxtor drives generally.

I'm currently using a pair of 250GB SATA Maxtor disks and I'm pretty
happy with them. My array of five Seagate SATA disks is going very
nicely in the server here, too. I had bad luck with Western Digital
last

year (three drive deaths out of seven drives) but that was apparently
just one bad batch.

Re: MS Office Mac Registration

2004-05-18 Thread Keith Palmer
Office 2004 has shipped to Australian Microsoft distributors this week
so you should see the new version in stores any day now.

Greg at Zytech has the details for the upgrade if you need it - it's
only $9.95 for recent purchasers.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to register my upgrade from Office
2001 to Office Mac v.X on line.

It requires getting a passport to the MS sites. I did this but when I
tried to sign in it kept saying the password was incorrect. I tried
using Exploder instead of Safari, still no go.

But I could use the password to sign in to Member Services and cancel
my account!

Anyone know what the problem is? I did not tick the box to say they
could share my email address with other sites but I presumed this was
optional.

Diana

Sounds like a typical ms bug really. Inexplicable.

Sorry I can't offer any advice.

Can you sign in under any other circumstances, like while using
windoze?

Good Luck

Yes, I haven't had much luck with CCC either. Usually what I do is
create the clone and then do an archive and install over the top of
that. Although it makes it a very time consuming process. If you're
trying to do it in a lab situation you might want to have a look at
setting up an Apple Software Restore image instead.

Citibank

2004-04-07 Thread Keith Palmer
In relation to various past discussions relating to online banking this
is probably the best (read worst) I've encountered

Today I tried to set up an account with Citibank for their advertised
Online Cash Manager for my son Matt who has just had an 18th birthday.

You can only apply and transact one of these accounts online but the
tradeoff is a 5.4% interest rate.

The problem is, that each time you attempt the online application you
can only get about 75% through the process before encountering a blank
screen. After 3 attempts I decided to phone Citibank direct.

They asked if I had a Mac and then told me that you can't apply for an
account if you use a Mac. I asked them if they could mail out an
application but I was told you can only apply online and before we did
the hole in my bucket routine they added but you can only get an
account if you have a PC.

They said that they don't know how to make their website work with a
Mac a truly amazing comment from what the largest bank

Re: Formatting Thumb Disk

Hi Bob

You should just be able to do this in Apple's Disk Utility simply by
selecting MS-DOS File System.

Due to a set of special circumstances I let my 128MB Thumb Disk
be reformatted to Mac OS Extended to overcome a problem.

Now I wish to reformat it back so that it can be seen on a PC as well
as

the Mac.

Of course I did think the machine that formatted it to Mac only
would be able to do that.

Does not seem to be possible.

Does anybody know what I can use to do this Format please ?

I cannot find a Mac utility that will both recognise the Drive and
provide a format in MS-Dos.. I think that's what it needs to be
! ?

Thanks

Re: Comments on the 17 Powerbook: Pro or Con?

2004-02-07 Thread Keith Palmer

Hi Nat

Just on the way out so it will be brief -

I've had 3 x 15 Ti PowerBooks (myself) and now have a 1.33GHz 17
Aluminium PowerBook. Quite simply the 17 is great. I was skeptical
about moving from a Ti model to the Aluminium but since purchase I've
never regretted the move.

I've taken out the standard 4200 RPM drive and put in a 7200RPM drive
and this machine is very quick - no G5 but it would really compete with
a bog standard G4 desktop.

Cindy still has a TiPB 400MHz with 4200 RPM drive and there is a
massive difference in performance between the 2 machines.

There's nothing I don't like about the 17 - even the backlit keys are
neat in low-light environments (and for me, at least, the extra monitor
area is a real bonus I doubt you would be disappointed.

Oh and it fits very neatly in my brief case on its odd excursion.

5. I am debating whether an extra 2 of screen is worth the price

Re: imac ram and OSX?

2003-11-26 Thread Keith Palmer

Hi Stewart

A 256MB RAM ($99) should suffice for what you want to do.

Yes RAM prices have basically doubled in the time you quote although
they have come down around 10-15% in the last month or so. The RAM you
are chasing has increased in price in this period.

Though prices move up and down marginally each week, what we are
currently experiencing is a relatively stable price for most RAM
products.

We will continue to see RAM for the older Macs slowly increase as
production for these modules is wound right back. A generalisation but
RAM for the G5's is already about 5% cheaper than the older G4's
despite it being twice the G4 price when the G5's were introduced. You
can expect this gap to continue to widen over the next few months.

Take some heart though, RAM for an older iMac (tray load) is now $183
for a 256MB DIMM or about double the price for the equivalent RAM for a
G5.

How much extra Ram do I need to obtain realistically 'liveable-with'
performance (or should I just leave it in OS9?)

Following on from this - is it me or has the price of RAM gone through
the roof? I bought some for a Quicksilver last year from zytech but
the prices for all RAM seem to be a lot higher than then ($400 for an
imac, then $200 to put a 512k stick in?)

Re: imac ram and OSX?

2003-11-26 Thread Keith Palmer
Yes - sort of there's a whole host of variations of most types of
RAM and then when you have the right variety there's a whole range of
quality.

PC resellers will generally stock what is politely referred to as OEM
RAM. This is RAM that has failed the exacting tests in the fabricators
factory but will probably/maybe still work in most/some applications.
A PC reseller will generally also stock a premium brand such as
Kingston which will cost 2-3 times the price.

The important thing is that you buy first grade RAM. Most resellers on
this list won't stock anything else, because the cheapie brands break
all too often and neither purchaser or reseller want this hassle.
First grade RAM usually comes with a lfetime warranty and will be RAM
from Hynix (Hyundai), Toshiba, etc.

G3 desktops use PC-100, G3 iMacs can use PC-133 or PC-100 (PC-133 is
newer and cheaper) except the original tray-load iMac which requires a
special RAM DIMM.

The only iMac to use SO-DIMM's are G4 iMacs and there are several
varieties depending on the G4 iMac model.

Re: The Panther Firewire problem

2003-11-03 Thread Keith Palmer, Zytech
At this stage it looks like the problem only exists with some of the
earlier Oxford 922 chips (with 1.02 firmware).

The 922 chip is used in all combo (FW/USB 2.0 FW800/USB 2.0)
configurations.

If anyone on the list has a combo FireCube or IceCube drive or
enclosure you can check your firmware version per the webpage below.
You can also download the latest (1.05) firmware from the same page but
please read the WARNINGS first.

Our advice is that you make sure you have a backup of your external
drive data and then just simply try it out with Panther. If there
isn't a problem and you have firmware 1.03 or later I'd recommend that
you proceed as normal.

Remember the problem only occurs if you boot from Panther with the
external combo drive connected so you can connect your drive after
booting up your machine to copy data and check the firmware.

Re: Diskwarrior 3 problems?

2003-10-06 Thread Keith Palmer, Zytech
It means the new PowerBook requires at least 10.2.7 to boot up but your
DiskWarrior CD only has 10.2.3 on it.

There are a few options that spring to mind -

1. make a 10.2.7 (or .8) startup CD and copy DW3 onto this
2. partition your new PB drive into 2 volumes both with an OS so you
can start up from one and repair the other

3. connect an external (bootable) hard drive

Hope this helps.

I have version 3 of DW which works great on my G4 desktop running OSX
10.2.6 and did equally well on my Pismo G3 500 running the same OS. I
have since replaced Pismo with a new 15 PB, that came standard with
10.2.7! I didnt even know this had been released prior to the
apparently troublesome 10.2.8.

I have loaded DW onto the 15 and it shows the hard disk in need of
some degree of clean up (26% messy!) Since DW cannot do a rebuild on
the system disk I booted with the DW CD and it went nowhere...a blue
blank screen with no DW! (this required a shutdown)
I tried several times more, after a message saying I needed to
uncheck the box in Get info on the CD icon, that says ignore
ownership on this volume with still no joy.

Does this mean that 10.2.7 is not compatible with DW 3 and that an
update of DW is required?

Don't bother with the Microsoft product unless your reseller promises

If you are used to going to your computer and typing on the keyboard

I've tried both and with incredible regularity neither would work

We have new Bluetooth keyboards and mice due in from Taiwan next week

Airport issues

2003-06-30 Thread Keith Palmer, Zytech
Just in case anyone else suffers connection problems after installing
the most recent Airport updater I had the exact same problem as
listed below and here is the solution. Thanks to Robin Belford
and the Macintouch website for this -

[Michael Cashwell] Like Nick Perry and Henry Rexroad, I too installed
both the Airport 3.1 and the 2nd version of the June security update
on my 1GHz iMac last night to find that it totally trashed my
Ethernet interface. I also noticed that many (most) fonts were not
available. I tried fixing permissions, deleting receipts and
installing older versions of those packages, etc. all without
success.
As I only use this machine to manage my Airport base station via
the wired network (it doesn't even have an Airport card) I don't
need the Airport kernel modules.
So I did two things: deleted (sudo rm -rf) all the Airport kexts
in /System/Library/Extensions/ and deleted the file
/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache knowing the system would
recreate it. Upon rebooting, all was well. I don't know which of
those two things really did it, but perhaps this will help the
others who are having this problem. It looks like Apple's slipping
back into the bad habit of releasing poorly-tested updates.

Re: USB flash drives

Hi Meg

If you can't format them under OS X then they don't comply with the USB
standard or they are faulty.

I know SanDisk had many problems with their units and ABSOLUTELY avoid

sounds suspiciously Chinese.

Our units are made in Taiwan and I think we've had a total 3 pieces
returned out of about about 2,800 sold and not a single one hasn't been

Obviously your Flash Drive will work in cross platform mode but the

CONS -

Re: Safari Debugger

The issue of bank sites is a common one and not just a problem for

It has had a great deal of discussion in this forum and I think it

Re: Hard disk error found with Disk Doctor

2003-05-01 Thread Keith Palmer, Zytech

Hi Matt

I wouldn't put great faith in Nortons either 100% accurately diagnosing
the problem nor repairing it.

Find a copy of DiskWarrior and run this. DiskWarrior will either
repair your B-Tree problem or tell you that it can't be repaired in
which case you will need to backup/copy off your data to another
volume/drive and reformat the offending hard drive.

Hope this helps.

Bluetooth keyboard/mouse

Just typing this email from the middle of the room from my new MS
Bluetooth keyboard - yes no wires, no infared.

The setup took 2 mins to unpack thje keyboard and mouse and insert
batteries and then about 5 secs for the Bluetooth assistant to find
both the keyboard and mouse and pair to them.

OK so who wants one or is it two you get a multi-button optical
mouse in the deal.

You also get a book for Windows XP users on how to get the thing to
work . it's a shame Mac users don't get a book because you don't
need one. The silly thing is this keyboard was made expressly for Win
XP users but the setup on a Mac really is just as a simple as
described. The very hardest thing was opening the battery door on the
mouse.

. and you get a Microsoft USB Bluetooth adapter which I haven't
tried because the Zytech one works just fine, is about half (or more
like one third) the size and has a 40 metre range ... I'll need a
larger screen from back here.

Re: Bluetooth keyboard/mouse

2003-04-17 Thread Keith Palmer, Zytech
We're trying to get bulk pricing rates but at this point in time it
looks like around $350 but that does include a shiny box, keyboard,
Bluetooth adapter, 4 x AA batteries, another dingly-dangly that I
didn't bother with and mouse. I think the mouse by itself is going to
retail at $150 so it's so...so value.

Having played with it for a while now, at this stage IntelliType Pro
3.1 doesn't see the Bluetooth keyboard so you can't go in and modify
the keys like you can on other MS keyboards. So all the little silver
buttons don't do anything yet but I'm sure this will be addressed in
the next software release.

MS haven't addressed this keyboard at the Mac market at all, it's
positioned to be something really neat for the XP crowd who go through
the process of installing Bluetooth, the dingle-dangles and setting
everything up. It just so happens that both the keyboard and mouse are
totally plug'n'play on a Mac.

Yet another example of just how wonderful OS X is .. I've just off
the phone to a friend who does presentations and he can't wait to get
hold of at least the mouse. He couldn't believe that you didn't have
to point it at a receiver or that it didn't matter if people got in the
way of you and your presentation.

For me, it's just nice to be completely free of cables. If I want some
space I can just pick up my keyboard and park it anywhere I want.

The downside is that you'll always need a couple of AA batteries close
by just in case your run flat.

I've included the MS info sites (with pics) - the keyboard and mouse
are actually dark metallic blue - much bluer in real life than is
depicted on the MS website -

Re: Sony P800 syncing with Mac

Can't say too much without dobbing somebody in but you may see a

You can copy information Mac to P800 via Bluetooth but the iSync

around the corner.

BTW the P800 is THE neatest phone I've ever used.

The non-PDA SonyEricssons work fine. The P800 is quite a different
beast. If you try and sync it with a Mac using iSync it will pretty
much kernel panic every time. You should be able to sync the P800 when
Panther rolls out. From what I have heard, you will be able to sync
just about everything with it then.

In lieu of running DiskWarrior (OS X version due any day now) you might

This suggestion is purely a good maintenance tip but it has fixed a

Where can you buy them?

You can burn cds but that time consuming and wasteful if you need to
move files often.

My daughter has her book on the pc in her room, but can only access the
internet [one user adsl] on the mac. Yes, I guess you could network
...but ten miles of blue cable from one room to another ...and I HAVE
NO CLUE HOW ..and my dodgy PC might corrupt my nice imac.

These thumb drives work well on PC with Windows 2000 and XP. Windows
9x needs to have drivers installed first (of course!). You can format
them as well. So if you did that (format) first on your PC and plugged
it into the mac, the mac should see it as a PC disk. Drag and drop.
I think I have seen Keith Palmer advertise these - but the going price
is about $1/megabyte from most PC shops.

Bluetooth keyboards and mice are on their way, the only thing keeping
them from the market at present is high pricing.

No doubt this will come down quickly - I had a telephony products book
from Taiwan today and it was full of Bluetooth headsets - there is an
avalanche of Taiwanese companies getting into Bluetooth and this will
drive the component price down.

Once the Taiwanese start mass producing product you can guarantee the

Re: Ram for G3 PowerBook

2002-12-30 Thread Keith Palmer

Hi Michael

You can put 2 x 512MB DIMMs in your FireWire G3 PowerBook (Pismo)
I'm assuming this is what you have.

Here is an installation guide for installing the 512MB DIMM in the
bottom slot -

http://www.ramjet.com/g3nbottom.html

The earlier Wallstreet/Lombard PowerBooks are limited to 2 x 256MB
DIMMs.

I have a G3 PowerBook 400 (Firewire) with 512 ram in top slot and 128
in
bottom slot. After reading MacInTouch, I get the impression that OS
10.2.3

requires 256 meg ram (and perhaps no I.E. or I.E. Security Update).

Is 512 the maximum for the top slot in the G3 PowerBook, and what's the
maximum ram that I can put in the bottom slot?

Michael Hawkins.

Re: PDF Problem

2002-12-23 Thread Keith Palmer, Zytech

Hi Peter

Account Edge only supports standard fonts for this feature so you'll
probably find that it won't work until a later version of the software
(maybe/perhaps).

Unless you use one of their bog standard forms the email/fax feature
just doesn't work.

Hi all,
I have recently tried emailing invoices from MYOB. I have set up an
invoice
with my logo as a black and white graphic (PICT format I think) and it
looks
fine on the screen and when printed. The problem is the logo doesn't
appear
in the PDF version which MYOB automatically produces. Any clues as to
how I

can get the logo to appear? A different file format perhaps?
Thanks in advance and a Merry Christmas to all.

Re: big, slower 3.5 or 5.25 bare HDs for archival storage?

2002-11-21 Thread Keith Palmer

Hi Martin

There are a few things to consider first. Most importantly that if you
put a 180GB drive in your FireWire enclosure you will have a 138GB
drive !!

This is because of the ATA-100 limit to this capacity although our
FireCube enclosure can be flashed to accept higher capacity (SLOW)
Maxtor drives.

We are awaiting a new board that will also accept larger IBM drives -
we are one of the VERY few outlets with stock of IBM's new 180GB drive.

I can guarantee you won't get past 138GB on any 5.25 solution.

Your solution then is to use a FireCube enclosure with a Maxtor drive
. Shay Telfer is currently using a Maxtor 160 in one of these cases
only problem Maxtor have just recently deleted all their BIG
drives in favour of a new range they are releasing in about 15-30 days
bottom line is there is no pricing OR availability.

So as of today there is no off-the-shelf external solution effectively
beyond 120GB drives. This will change next month with Maxtor's new
range.

Hope this helps well it doesn't really does it?

On Thursday, November 21, 2002, at 04:27 PM, Martin Hill wrote:

Slow! It needn't be fast access or transfer rates (not being used
for online fast access, but rather off-line storage of material).
3.5 or 5.25 IDE ATA mechanism that can be slotted into a Firewire
(1394) enclosure when needed.

We've seen 120GB ATA hard disk chambers for as low as $369 which is a
great price per megabyte ratio for a HD, but would love even larger
capacities per drive. We've seen 200Gb chambers but these have 8MB
caches and are obviously geared for speed and thus have a
commensurately higher price ($899). We don't need a fast drive -
5400 rpm (or less!) with no cache would be fine - it'd still be
faster than tape and we'd work off faster AV drives when actually
capturing DV footage or editing it. We also don't care if it is a
3.5 or 5.25 mechanism. Using a 5.25 Firewire enclosure with it
would be fine.

Re: ADSL ethernet modems

2002-08-22 Thread Keith Palmer
Oops yes sorry (nothing like a former Telstra employee to set us
straight on pricing issues!) ... however, I think the modem that Andrew
recommended is a DIY job and therefore you don't pay the setup. (I know
Andrew and Robin in Busselton have both done this setup.)

The Telstra guys will want to install Enternet and as I said keep this
off your machine.

Your Mac or Airport will connect direct to ADSL using PPPoE.

Go with Andrew's advice - avoid Enternet like the plague ... mind you
if you ever need tech support they won't believe you that you've
connected a computer to ADSL without it!

The Telstra advantage is that they do give you the modem at no cost.

Errr! Not quite. You do pay an Instal fee to get the whole thing up
and

running
which is at the... least ..amount if you have an
initial

contract of 18 months.

Re: Westpac OLB

2002-08-22 Thread Keith Palmer
Yes spare a thought for the poor people supplying your Macs - YES I'm
serious.

I recently looked at the margins being offered retailers and I'm sure
they actually lose money every time they sell a one-off low-mid range
machine.

If they can sell iMacs or iBooks 10+ at a time they probably just do ok.

Please factor in the rent, wages, superannuation, advertising, capital
setup costs of showroom and own equipment all those other overheads
including the incidentals such as credit card commission (and yes the
banks charge a commission on the GST component as well! which is
effectively a second commission the retailer wears) and you would wonder
why these people are crazy enough to do this???

Some retailers are already out there selling PC's, so adding Apple gear
is just another way of increasing revenue at marginal cost. However,
those guys who are brave enough to be out there championing Mac products
deserve our absolute support even if they have to be crazy.

By the way they probably have everything they own on the line (and I
mean by way of a heavy-duty enforceable contracts, indemnities and
securities) just to be able to supply us Macs. Maybe they can be crazy
heroes!

I agree - their site is generally very Mac friendly. I'm happy to add
my name to the list of people complaining - is there an email address to
reply to Terry Powell at Westpac?

It relates to their Other Accounts feature which is for Win and IE
only that allows those users to access their other online accounts from
the one Westpac login.

Any suggestions on a reply? Anyone know of open technologies that might
do the same thing?

PS I'm actually very happy with the rest of their OLB services.

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your comments on the Other Accounts service within Online
Banking. We understand your concerns and frustration at not being able
to access the service via a Macintosh system.

Other Accounts is run using ActiveX controls. The ActiveX component
securely encrypts the customer information on to their personal
computer and automates the

customers' browser while using Other Accounts.

At this time Macintosh computers do not support the use of ActiveX,
which is why Macintosh customers are unable to use Other Accounts.

CommPost: FireWire cards

2002-08-05 Thread Keith Palmer
This week we have both our FireWire PCI card AND FireWire PC slot
(PCMCIA) card at 10% off. That's $53.10 for the PCI card and $89.10 for
the PC Slot card.

The FireWIre PCI card allows desktop users 3 external FireWire ports to
access fast hard drives, video camera, fast card readers, etc and is
fully compatible with both Mac and PC -

http://www.zytech.com.au/firewire/pci/3port/index.html

Our FireWire PC Slot (PCMCIA) allows notebook users the same FireWire
capability but with 2 ports -

http://www.zytech.com.au/usb/pccard/index.html

Unlike USB 2.0 FireWire speed does not fluctuate. Whilst USB 2.0 will
have its place with standard peripherals, remember that if a USB 1.0/1.1
is connected to the same chain, all devices drop to USB 1.0 speeds. One
reader in Canberra reports running tests with 17 FireWire devices
connected to their laptop with maximum data throughput being maintained
by all devices.

We are now stocking both 4-6 pin and 6-6 pin FireWire cables in 1.8
metre lengths plus also 4.5 metre lengths -

http://www.zytech.com.au/firewire/cables/index.html

and if you are interested in Bluetooth . keep a watch on our
website for new product announcements.

Our Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse is now on the website and available ex
stock. These mice are dual PS2 and USB and will run on both PC and
Mac. For Mac OS X users they are simply plug'n'play, OS 9 need to
download the MS Intellimouse driver. These mice are great value at $29 -

We were going to add Kodak and Panasonic digital cameras to the website
but their reviews have generally been so consistently bad that we have
elected to remain carrying just Fuji FinePix. Throughout the range,
Fuji reviews are consistently good with top notch opticals and ease of
use always to the fore. A recent 2 megapixel shootout is at -

http://www.macworld.com/2002/08/reviews/keller.html
We have just repriced the FinePix A101 (1.3 megapixel) to $399 and
FinePix A201 (2 megapixel) to $490 -

We've had many people contact us wanting information on making their
FireWire hard drive cross-platform. There are several solutions
including partitioning your drive or running Fat32, all of which have
their drawbacks. One of the best solutions is to have your drive set up
as a Mac volume but use a utility such as Here Now on your PC that
will mount your Mac FireWire hard drive and allow you to read and write
to your Mac files directly from the PC. There are other competing
utilities that do similar things but as a starting point take a look at

Re: Free POP Mail Accounts?

2002-08-02 Thread Keith Palmer
Maybe Shay should post the article explaining the move. After reading
it myself I can understand the rationale employed by Apple.

Indeed if they didn't employ it, there was the likelihood their stock
would have been dumped big time. It was a question of the company
surviving or upsetting customers. A massive sell-off of the company's
stock (and the associated plummeting stock price) is the last thing
Apple needs if this happened it could have likely been the
beginning of the end. I know it sounds ridiculous that it is more
important to please the stock market than your customer base, but in
terms of the viability of companies like Apple, this is very true (in
the US at least!).

You'll remember that Apple did well under the Pepsi man (at least
initially) he kept the stock market happy even though the
innovation and product offerings went severely downhill.

The decision by Apple is simply a corporate reality.

Well, given that the other option is Apple's financial status going
down the tubes, and the company with it, it has to make these
decisions.

I'd rather have the Apple that I really haven't been able to trust
for the past decade or so (and only loosely understand) than no Apple
at all. Sad, but then that's what economic rationalism gets you.
Have fun,
Shay

I find it hard to believe that Apple's financial survival depends on
charging for iTools. If it continues to provide the service but charges
and
then most of the punters spit the dummy and don't sign up for the
service -
it still incurs the costs of providing the service, it doesn't bring in
much
revenue from it and it suffers the intangible (but real in terms of
future

revenue) cost of loss of customer loyalty. It doesn't sound like good
business to me!
Just my 2c worth.
Neil
