As Jeff mentioned the extra Nice Dress Nellie, TAGS also had another notable extra throughout its original run. Hazel Pierce, a slender, older lady with red hair, was Lucille Ball's stand-in. She additionally appeared on 'Batman' as a Gotham City corrections officer handcuffed to Catwoman (Julie Newmar) at the end of the episode. I had the pleasure of meeting Ted White (who played prison work farm felon Avery Noonan in TAGS' 'The Legend Of Barney Fife' (1/17/1966)), at the 'Chiller Theatre' Expo in Parsippany, New Jersey. He noticed the photo of Pat Hingle in the Jim Clark/Ken Beck penned book The Andy Griffith Show Book and remarked: He was a nice guy. Mayberry Centenarian Fans
At age 102, (born circa 1909) you figure these fans witnessed the evolution of the various entertainment media from the silent era, Talkies, to the birth of primetime episodic television in 1948. When TAGS debuted in 1960, these folks were about 51 years old. They probably especially enjoyed 'Matlock' (1986-1995) as Homer's father alluded to on 'The Simpsons.' What would really be impressive would be a centenarian who is an avid collector of TAGS and a person who actually contributed to TAGS' Nielsens. Those fans are the rara avises. A huge percentage of TAGS fans, born during or after its production, discovered the series AFTER its original run in syndication. TAGS and Three's Company
Don Knotts always recollected that his 5 years on TAGS were the BEST of his life. Three's Company just proved to be a steady acting gig. Ralph Furley was just an older extension of Barney Fife, with all of the various nervous guy, scare takes, and ego mannerisms that Knotts specialized in. You can tell that John Ritter loved working with Knotts, acknowledging his comedic legend at the time. (Remember, Barney once mentioned Ritter's dad, Tex Ritter on TAGS.) The AFL-NFL Championship (Superbowl I) occurred on January 15, 1967 (Green Bay Packers 35, Kansas City Chiefs 10), one day before 'A Visit to Barney Fife' (1/16/1967) originally aired. Barney and Opie mentioned Baltimore Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas in TAGS' 'Opie Flunks Arithmetic' (4/19/1965). (The 1964 Baltimore Colts finished 12-2 with Johnny U. receiving the NFL MVP award.) Concerning TAGS extras, much has been noted about Tom Jacobs, Mr. Schwump, and Nice Dress Nellie. However, there is another older, slim, female extra who appears in multiple episodes throughout the entire history of the series. Most humorously, she dances with Barney during the tag dance before he reaches Thelma Lou in 'Fun Girls' (4/13/1964). In the color episodes, her hair is red. As to Ken's inquiry to Mayberry characters people identify themselves with, I would most definitely select Ed Sawyer (William Lanteau) from 'Stranger in Town' (12/26/1960).
