Angels and Demons
Ron Howard has been criticized for his latest film 'Angels and Demons' as being detrimental to Catholics and the Vatican. The film is just fiction, entertainment. Opie attended the All Souls Church and Ron Howard was married in a Methodist church. After TAGS ended its run, Andy Griffith's first film was 'ANGEL in My Pocket' (1969). Plus, Andy always made Opie say his prayers at bedtime. This is the first I've heard of the film. But I agree that it's unrealistic to think of Ron Howard as being a grown up Opie. It seems like such an unimportant line, but maybe the writers inserted it and the dog was told to sit in the driver's seat. Does anyone have any opinions on this. Could there be episodes with ad libs? Barney and Andy were masters of the craft. It sounds reasonable that they'd be able to stick in a sentence here and there and the director would allow it. Aagh! All this talk of front porches makes me want one so badly. I have time to sit. I live slightly out of town so don't have neighbors walking by much, but I like to watch traffic and joggers and such. Not to mention working on my philosophical meanderings. I may have to speak sternly to my husband about building me a porch. I feel if I don't get one soon, I'll go drink myself silly on Elly's ice cream sodas. If she won't sell them to me, I'll just get them somewheres else. This doesn't mean the front porch talk is making me upset. Keep the memories coming. I enjoy them even though they bring a nostalgic tear to the eye. Of course, I live in the North and we only get about 5 or 6 months of porch sitting weather if we're lucky. My porch (when I get one) will face the east. Has anyone experience the pleasure of sitting in the fresh of the morning with a cup of tea and breathing the sweet air? Romance is in the air
How about the biggest romance of all time on TAGS? All the men and women of Mayberry making up after Andy finally endorses Ellie for the first female on the town council. Otis patted his wife's arm. Hilda Mae and Barney smiled at each other. The whole crowd was romancing and the sheriff himself was kissed by a council woman. Kind behind the eyes PS Please don't let politics ruin Mayberry. It's bad enough we're getting that new bypass on account of Mayor Stoner's brother. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
The election and Aunt Bee
I have a question for you fellow NC residents. Who all is Andy endorsing in the upcoming elections? I know Bev Pardue and I believe I heard one or 2 more. I know whoever he is endorsing I will vote for REGARDLESS! Just curious if anyone has heard. Thanks Jed McCann of Clemmons, NC Jed, I heard he was voting for Mayor Pike. Mayor Stoner is starting to bug him. On another note, after my Bible study this morning, we ladies were sitting around chitchatting. It wasn't ordinary conversation. It was chitchat. Anyway, I heard Aunt Bee mentioned so left my chitchat and joined that one. We had a visitor whose mother made Frances Bavier's clothes after she moved to Siler City. The seamstress's name was LaVerna Andrews. Our visitor knew a lot about Frances so it turned into quite an interesting conversation. I feel like I've been panning for gold and came up with a nugget. Rance Howard
I looked at IMDb to find what character Rance Howard played in Cool Hand Luke. He was a sheriff in an uncredited role. Next time my husband watches the movie (his favorite), I'll keep an eye out for Sheriff Howard. Digest Posting Guidelines according to the Untrained Voice
Well done, Untrained Voice. I love that you backed up your talking points with actual quotes from the greatest show ever written. I believe you got us, if we don't jump. There are many, many others who contribute very wise and caring posts to the Digest and it always reassures me that everything is okay in Mayberry. I'm glad Mr. Kessel reminded me of the tomato scene. It's no wonder the actors kept breaking up with laughter. It is a hilarious scene. The retakes explain why the tomato spot changes places on the shirt. Which episode is it that so I can go back and rewatch it? I need some laughter in my day today. Not to break any rules, but my daughter who is in the military has a PT test she has to pass on Oct. 20. She has been PCS'd to Italy and if she doesn't pass her supervisor warns her that losing Italy will be the least of her problems. He said her life will be ruined. Unfortunately, my daughter has agonizing shin splints and can barely walk. Now I know there are some former and current members of the Coldstream Guards out there who understand this problem. Please pray that God's will be done and whatever happens, my daughter (and I) will be able to cope. My daughter is not high-spirited. She's sensitive! And my heart is breaking. Thank you, friends. Thank you. Kind behind the eyes PS To lighten things a little, it kinda reminds me of The Lucky Letter and Barney's pistol qualifying. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Thanks, Joe
Thanks for resending Mr. Kessel's post. I was really confused and kept going back to see what I had missed. What I didn't notice is that Number 270 was missing. I was starting to worry about myself getting a bit tetched in the head. Thanks for pointing out the missing digest, Aunt Bee. And thanks again, Joe Gritton, for reposting Mr. Kessel's observations. I'm still fixated on Wallace Ford in Harvey. I haven't had a chance to watch the two shows yet. I'm trying to remember when Harvey was filmed and when Aunt Bee's Romance was filmed to see how old Mr. Ford was in each one. If there was a few years difference, maybe that's why I didn't recognize him. Or maybe I'm just not a trained noticer and should drop out of trained noticing school. Mr. Kessel's account of Burt Mustin being so grateful for being remembered and so anxious to not be forgotten brought tears to my eyes. Thank you, Mr. Kessel, for giving us a glimpse of the real personalities behind the characters we loved. I am in awe of you for your tireless work at getting to know these people and for your wonderful memory so you can recount your experiences to us. Because of this, you'll never be forgotten either. Wallace Ford
Mr. Kessel, you mentioned Wallace Ford as being in Aunt Bee's Romance. My favorite movie is Harvey with Jimmy Stewart. I believe the taxi driver in one of the scenes near the end was played by Wallace Ford. (They got no faith in me or my buggy.) Anyway, I never would have gotten the connection. Is it the same Wallace Ford? It's like Mrs. Poultice and Big Maude. I just can't seem to see the same actor/actress in these two roles. To me that's a sign of being remarkably talented. If a character actor is not readily recognized from one role to another, then they must be putting on the personality of the particular character they are playing. Which, I guess would mean that they would not be typecast, or whatever the term is. I'll have to go back and watch Harvey and Aunt Bee's Romance again. It will be a pleasant chore. This time I will watch Wallace Ford carefully and see if I can see him in the other role. I hope I am not incredibly dense to not recognize the actors in other roles. I am just so taken up with what I'm watching that I don't notice the details. I was really disappointed when someone on this digest pointed out that the scenery as seen through the courthouse door was painted. In my mind, Mayberry was exactly as it was presented to be and it's hard to think about it being filmed in different settings and sequences. It amazes me that Andy and Barney can be talking outside the courthouse, then walk in the door still talking without a missed beat. (I'm assuming that the outside shots and inside shots were filmed in different places and sequences.) The continuity amazes me. Anyway, I put the details out of my mind and just enjoy being in Mayberry. I try not to notice the painted scenes or cardboard squad car. I'm happy that a lot of you know the intricate details of putting together a television show and all about the 40 acres and I have learned a lot. But I just want to enjoy the end product. However, keep the information and discussions coming. It's all very interesting. Kind behind the eyes PS Was calling Andy boy an insult? I just might have a hand in those petunias yet, boy. It seems he put a little emphasis on the word boy. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
A little bit of this and a little bit of that.
Was Andy Griffith an only child? I had never realized that Big Maude and Mrs. Poultice were the same actress until someone mentioned it on the digest quite some time ago. Even though I know it now, I still have trouble seeing a resemblance. That's the actor of the woman, I guess. Some of the actors and actresses who thought they were second rate, were so wrong. The small role characters can make or break a show. I appreciate Mr. Kessel sharing his knowledge with us. And, skating pretty close to rule number 2, there is one episode I cannot stand because of the minor character role and yet I believe that actor was considered to be pretty good. I did see him in a movie on TCM recently and his role didn't portray him as stupidly as it did on TAGS so now I think a little more highly of him. If a good actor can make you dislike him, then he's a good actor! A good example is Andy Griffith in A Face In The Crowd. Scary role and unsympathetic character. Andy Griffith also played a role in a TV movie as a judge who put two girls in jail for a traffic infraction or something. While there, one of the girls was raped. I saw this movie before I had seen any TAGS, and I could hardly stand Mr. Griffith. And now I am a fan of TAGS and never want to leave Mayberry and our sheriff. A long time ago, we discussed Ellie Walker's middle name and I believe the consensus was that there was none mentioned on the show. She was erroneously thought to be Ellie Mae because Andy once said, Elly, may I say that behind that pretty face . . . something. So. Is Mae her middle name or not? And finally, is the episode in which Otis buys a car the only episode with just three of the characters shown? And that reminds me of Charlie Varney who used to post here frequently. I hope all is well with him. Kind behind the eyes ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Funniest line(s)
I laugh every time I hear Ernest T. Bass ask in his nasal voice, I wonder who that could be? The scene is in My Fair Ernest T. Bass and Barney is going to teach Ernest T. how to enter a room properly. The look Andy gives Ernest T. is priceless. Then of course there are more lines later in the same scene. I can't hear him. I can't hear him. How can I learn if I can't hear him? (Doggone it, Ernest T. Bass! Those are the amenities. You don't shout out amenities!) If the above quotes are slightly wrong, I would appreciate it if someone would correct them. I like to be precise about these things but don't have time to go watch the DVD. I know, I know. If you've got time to breathe, you've got time to watch TAGS. But please correct the quotes. Kind behind the eyes ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
A good read
I just finished reading Bryson City Tales by Walt Larimore, MD. It is a book about a doctor's first year of practice in Bryson City, NC. It reminded me a lot of Mayberry. It's a good summer read for anyone who enjoys stories of a small city and colorful characters like our Mayberry friends. Catching up
I've been away so am catching up on all the digests. First of all, what is garni in the Halcyon Loretta Winslow quote where they had cheese and garni sandwiches? Second, I liked the idea that Horatio's last name could have been Carp. I thought that was clever, dapper Dan. I'm only sorry that Don Good has been using Pike. Don't get your bandages or antibiotic powder at the drug store, Don. Rumor will get around town that you shot yourself while cleaning your pistol or that you are dead. Third, in one of the episodes where Barney is swearing in some of the boys as deputies, the oath of office contained the words, something like I do solemnly swear to uphold the laws of the City of Mayberry, County of Mayberry therein. Something like that. Kind behind the eyes ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Hymns and quotes
A quick question along a similar vein: What hymns were sung on TAGS? Some of the ones that I remember off the top of my head were Bringing in the Sheaves, Church in the Wildwood, and There is a Fount (Sinners Lose All Their Guilty Stains). I know there were others, just can't remember them right now. Doug Johnson Leaning on the Everlasting Arms was sung at Dud's and Charlene's wedding. It's good that Ben Weaver wasn't there. He doesn't know the words. He just moves his lips. I need a quote. I think it was in an episode where Barney was practising his singing and Andy suggested that maybe singing wasn't for him. Barney said something like, Andy, can a bird stop singing? Can a (something else)? Does anyone know the whole quote. I'd like to use it when people tell me I should do something different than what I am doing at that moment. nsbp
Lately, several posts have contained the combination nbsp; which really interferes in a person's reading. I'm glad you mentioned that, Thelma Lou. I was beginning to think there was a secret code going on that I didn't know about. If it's a code for a secret club, they probably can't tell ya. Remembering
-- ANDY:Remember, Barn. Just you and me. The Big Freeze. - That quote was from The Cow Thief, but I don't want to make a big moulage out of it. Bannertown and Edgar Coleman
Next week my son is getting married in Maryland and moving to West Virginia. So I was looking at the atlas this morning and noticed a Bannertown not too far from Mt. Airy. Was there ever a reference to Bannertown on TAGS? It seems kinda familiar to me. Also, in which episode did Thelma Lou and Edgar Coleman glue covers on the church hymnals? I scored a 9 so I must have a mus-ee-cal trained voice. I scored only a seven, but then I was born in 1959 and we didn't own a TV until I was about 12. And then we weren't allowed to watch it! Are those enough excuses? Of the seven, I guessed at least two. So even though I made the Mayberry Glee Club, I think I'd better have one of those really fancy super sensitive microphones. I'll be the one just moving my lips like Mr. Weaver when he's pretending to sing Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. Jean Carson and breathing
Jean Carson played Skippy's friend Daphne. She was the fun girl that favored polka dot dresses and liked to say, Hello, Doll. She was also the convicted husband beater in Convicts at Large, I think. You know, because of the actor of the woman, I never realized that Daphne and Eleanora Poultice also played the convicts until someone mentioned it on the digest. Did either one play any other roles on TAGS? I'm a nurse and whenever I have to give a breathing treatment to one of my patients I like to tell them that I've given them an A in breathing. I don't think they get it, but I surely do enjoy it. Kind behind the eyes except today. I'm feeling kinda tensed and my skinny little veins are poppin'. I think the only cure is watching some TAGS, which I'm going to go do right now. Barney and Thelma Lou, Phfftt sounds good.
