Andy tells Opie not to pull horsehairs out of the lapel on his suit jacket.
What is that about? Thanks

According to The Horsehair Jacket Canvas -Tailoring – A Hand Tailored
Suit<https://ahandtailoredsuit.com/blogs/off-the-cuff/the-horsehair-jacket-canvas-tailoring>

Horsehair, also known as horsehair canvas or hair canvas, is a woven
interfacing that provides excellent sturdiness and has a coarse texture.
Despite its name, it is not a thick material and can feel rough to the touch,
making it unsuitable for wearing next to the skin.

Horsehair is commonly used in fine tailoring, particularly for achieving a
beautifully rolled lapel. In bespoke suits, horsehair is often used in the
jacket to ensure that it maintains its shape.

In the past, horsehair was used in crinoline petticoats to support oversized
skirts. However, most of what is sold as "horsehair" today is actually
synthetic and made from materials such as polyester or nylon. Historically,
horsehair was made from the tail hair of horses, which is stiff and strong.

I wonder what the record is so far for the number of Mayberry alumni in one
show or movie. Six is pretty good.
Rick in Va.

Rick,

The most I've seen was eight in the Gunsmoke episode "Mad Dog". I'm counting
alum that were uncredited in Gunsmoke but they did have a part in TAGS:

George Lindsey - Pinto Watson
Sam Reese/Photographer (Big Fish in a Small Town) - Buff Watson
Hoke Howell - Roan Watson
Iggie Wolfington/George Watkins (The Wedding) - Mayor Juke Wheeler
Dub Taylor - Bartender
Denver Pyle - Dr. Rand
Rudy Germane/club member (The Clubmen) - Barfly (uncredited)
Robert Robinson/Mayberry Townsman (Various) - Barfly (uncredited)

I'd love it if someone can outdo me.

I've seen or heard at least 4 interviews with Ron and Clint over the past
couple weeks, while they are out promoting their new book about growing up
in Hollywood. Although the book sounds like it's well worth reading, and
the stories the brothers told were funny and interesting, I was a little
surprised and disappointed that TAGS was hardly mentioned in those
interviews. I was hoping Ron especially would've been asked more about his
relationship with Andy, and the presence of his father Rance on the set,
giving Andy some tips and even acting in a couple episodes. Hopefully the
book has more TAGS stories in it.

(Clint did say he has no memory at all of playing Leon since he was only 2
or 3 years old at the time.)

Where is the Digest?

2021-07-13 Thread Harriet Browder
Is it just me or has Floyd gone to Nashville? No Digest since July 2nd. Barney
is causing a stir down at Foley’s Market, I’m having withdrawals and the
neighbors think I’m drying up after a drug bout. The chickens won’t have
anything to do with me and The Morrison Sisters have been borrowing way too
much cracked corn and sugar lately. Otis is crying and banging on the cell
bars, and I can’t sleep. Just got a bill from Orville Monroe and I don’t even
own a TV. Here comes Clara and I bet she’s gotta tongue wagging, boat load of
gossip. I can’t take it…..I need a fix

Harriet, the chicken thief, hiding in the loft, under the straw in the barn.
Giddy up, Digest!

I have heard the phrase "give me a little sugar" all my life, so I do not
believe it is something the writers of Mayberry made up. I suspect it may be a

Thanks to Ed for explaining what "I'll be dogged" means.

Got another one for discussion. A few times in the early episodes, Andy
uses a phrase "give her a little sugar", meaning giving someone a kiss. Is
this a southern expression? (never have heard it up here in the Great White
North). Or is it something Andy or the writers made up, like "a bird in
this world"?

Just wondering.

The reference that Malcom made to "Government House" was the Mayberry
Courthouse. Not Andy's residence. Also, the car that Malcom drove Andy to the
Courthouse in belonged to an out-of-town neighbor who had asked Aunt Bea if
Andy would start on occasion to keep the battery up.

When Andy was sneaking to his car to avoid Malcom, Malcom cut him off at the

Then Malcom said " Government House " . Hmm what's that ? So I looked that
up.

Though Andy is not a colonel or ( colonial governor ) , he is a constable but I
dont think Andys title or " home :" is worthy to be referred to as Government
House. Maybe Malcom used that term because he was working for a " colonel "
and somehow affiliated Andy being a constable with a colonel. I know thats
stretching it a bit. What are your thoughts ?

Miracle Skin Salve is an actual product on Amazon. Someone had the right
marketing idea.

I was curious, so I posted the following question, and did receive this
response -

A fellow customer answered your question, "Can this be used for crow's feet and
prickly rash? "
C. Dell answered:
"I?m sorry I do not know the answer to that. I actually used it on my dog for
some skin issues and it cleared it up, it was pretty amazing, even the vet was
impressed. I would give it a try if I were you."

For fun, try reading the above answer as Dr. Pendike. :-)

It was good to read your rendition of Mayberry Days. This is only the
second time in 22 years that we have missed. The first being in 2003 with
the birth of my daughter. I knew alot of things were gonna be
different. I hate that we missed it, although parts of me are glad that
we did so we wouldn't be disappointed. But like you said, Mayberry Days
isn't about the stars that come, it's about the fans. I think we plan to
go visit either this year of early next year, and that will be nice, but
really, I'm looking forward to a normal MD next year. Let's just keep our
fingers crossed.

I guess while staying home most of the time, watching TAGS more, my sense
of catching odd things on the show is heightened. Today, while Barney was
on the phone making date plans with Thelma Lou, he said she would not have
time to change her clothes after work. That she would have to wear her
uniform - 'you wear your uniform and I'll wear my uniform'. This was shown
in 1964. What jobs would require a woman to wear a uniform beside waitress
and nurse, at that time? I'm not old enough to have noticed anything else.

TAGS fans,
In the episode "Hot Rod Otis", very early on (before Otis even gets his car)
Andy is walking up to the courthouse. Parked out front there is a car with
what looks like some kind of weird head rest attached to the front seat.
Does anyone know about that? Was it something you could get back before
headrests became standard on cars?
Samdoctortuttle.com

Sam, I think you're right. A home-made headrest.

Gus, that makes sense to me, it just seems like we would know that, what
with Barney's injuries and ailments. And back then, nurses wore all white
and the special nurses cap. ( my mama was a nurse) Maybe that's part of
the mystery of the show.
Thelma, which one do you think Thelma Lou would most likely be?

I guess I missed something in the translation. Barney was talking to
Juanita over at the diner when he talked about wearing their uniforms.
So just what did Thelma Lou do? My guess would be she was a secretary. She
does mention getting back to the office at some point.

That is how rumors get spread and it is NOT what we need these days (or any
days). If you have been paying attention and reading actual reports instead of
conspiracy theories, you would have known that all CBS shows have been being
pulled from Netflix (pulled by CBS, not cancelled by Netflix) at the ends of
their current contract terms with Netflix because CBS wants to air them on its
own new streaming service.

Barney wasn't the only one to repeat names. Aunt Bee also did it. Can anyone
tell me when Aunt Bee repeated someone else's name exactly 7 times in a row?

Not sure if it was 7 times, but she repeated Andy's name numerous times in
the episode when the fun girls show up at Andys house just before Andy and
Barney show up with Helen and Thelma Lou.

Well, last night on TCM I finally watched the classic movie "Niagara". It
was shot in and around my hometown when I was a toddler, and was the movie
that launched Marilyn Monroe into super star status, but I've never actually
seen it.

I was pleasantly surprised to see 2 TAGS alumni in it: one of the main
characters was played by Max Showalter, who used to go by his stage name of
Casey Adams when he played the guy Andy sold the old cannon to in "The Horse
Trader" in Season 1.

Then, toward the end of the movie, there was Will Wright a/k/a the original
Ben Weaver, playing a guy who had a small marina near the Falls. Ever though
he was 7 or 8 years younger than he was in TAGS, he looked about the same.

Always nice to find TAGS alumni everywhere.

Digest

2019-09-07 Thread ctmidway58
All the test runs have showed up for me! Hope everyone else is back on track!
I was thinking back & the first Star of TAGS I ever saw was Maggie Peterson
Mancuso, then Richard Linke, at the old museum. Over the years I had the
pleasure of meeting Betty Lynn, Howard Morris my Gooney Bird friend & he
understands, James Best, The Dillards, Ronnie Schell, Leroy McNees, George
Spence with whom we formed a very special bond! I'm sure there are others but
for now they are it, & they are all gone except for Betty, Maggie, Ronnie &
Leroy.
Looking forward the the Days this year if we can make it. Our daughter is
having some health issues & may have to be in the hospital for testing during
that time, in Michigan. If we can't make it we'll have to sell our tickets for
the night Col. Tim's show, so will let you know before time if we can't make
it. So very much hoping we can! I'm having a pork chop sandwich attack!

Thank you Maryann for the kind words. And yes, lots of folks put in a lot

I am in the process of making items for the silent auction at MD2019.
Come by after the parade and peruse the items that lots of talented
people have donated. The revenue is funneled back to the SAC to help
promote the Mayberry event(s) throughout the year.

Thank you to Allan and Jan Newsome and all the others whose names I wish I knew
to include here, for a wonderful time at the Mayberry Meetup in Mt. Airy a few
weeks ago. From arranging meals for us to the Sunday Worship service (which
cleverly correlated scripture with a TAGS episode focused on Otis), I know more
hours went into preparing for this event than I can imagine.
Thank you to the tribute artists. It was easy to tell which characters they
were and it was so much fun to see them. Very impressive.
Thank you to Dewey Lamb for all the creative door prizes he made. He always
puts a lot of thought, time, (and I suspect, money), into making TAGS treasures.
And thank you to all of you who I got to speak with, hang out with, and get to
know a bit. Mayberry fans are the best.

2019-07-31 Thread Joe
Well, Janet, you've certainly raised some excellent points and provided
some very interesting information I didn't know. The story with Lucy and
her friend is one I've never heard, and similar to that rumor mentioned in
the article.

I guess I don't have a real theory about Mr. Schwamp's identity - although
the fact that this "extra" appeared in (I believe) 26 or 27 TAGS episodes,
usually in a more prominent role than other extras without speaking parts,
gives some credence to the theory that maybe the actor was friends with one
or more of the writers, producers, directors, etc. who gave him a lot of
opportunities. I also wonder if Ruth Burch, the casting director of TAGS
until 1966, may have been the one who initially cast the actor who played
Mr. Schwamp?

Here is an interesting short clip from a movie/TV show featuring Moe Howard
of 3 Stooges fame. Clearly seen in the background, seated at a table in the
restaurant on the right, is our Mr. Schwamp. I'm not sure of the name or
year of this clip, but "Mr. Schwamp" looks about the same age as he did in
TAGS.

Oh, by the way, I finally got a copy of the Bette Davis movie "June Bride,"
which features a young Betty Lynn in the part of Boo Brinker. I taped it off
of TV many years ago but never had an "official" copy until now. If you've
never seen it, I urge you to check it out. I really like it! It has a great
cast and lots of witty dialogue.

every issue of the Digest contains copies of previous Digests.

Please turn off the automatic quoting feature of your email tool so this

Please quoting more than is necessary to help folks understand the comment

Emmett,
I watch TAGS nightly on MeTV, and they do some editing for commercials, but not
that much; not like TV Land does. Most syndicated reruns of past TV shows are
butchered by the networks/stations for the advertising dollar. They don't have
the common sense to realize that rather than spending $20 on what they're
hawking, I'd much rather spend my $20 on the uncut DVD, and get the whole
season uncut. But, the cut-up episodes are good for a quick fix. I'm sure
everyone else feels the same way. You're not caught up in it alone, buddy.

Ken, I know exactly what you're saying. When I was in school, we had the
principal, assistant principal, and coaches who doubled in their roles. As an
example, our assistant principal was also the supervisor for the student bus
drivers. Yep, in NC in the "olden days" when I lived in Greensboro, NC, the
bus drivers were high school students earning some extra money. You know, the
foldin' kind. At that time, NC was the only state to have only high school
students as bus drivers, and we held the lowest accident rate in the country.
Mr. Moran also taught a Civics class. Our principal, Mr. Madison, taught a
Science class, I believe. Anyway, it's a retrospect of simpler times. Thanks
for sharing.

Sam,
I have a couple of ideas. At one time, in about three or four episodes, the
squad car had DC-269 as a license plate. Also, when I was living in NC, a
friend had a squad car replica with AUNT BEE as the license plate.

Just a couple of thoughts. You'll come up with something very Mayberryish, I'm
sure.

I just did this quiz and the result was within 3 years of my age. Pretty

Just a guess, but the movie “Verboten!” starring our own James Best used the 40

2018-04-21 Thread Ron McLendon

-Original Message-
. . . . . in Wisconsin it is no longer legal for a barber or stylist to give
shaves using a straight razor or any kind of hand razor. The only exceptions
are for barbers who have been cutting hair for many years and have been
grandfathered in . . . .

That is such a shame. I bet because that giving a straight razor cut is a
dying/lost art. I've never had a straight razor shave. I understand that the
closeness cannot be met. Now, I've had my neck cleaned and sideburns trimmed
with a straight razor, but not a shave. Around the Nashville area, finding a
true barber is like finding a nickel with the buffalo facing the wrong way. Oh
there are plenty of "quick-cut" salons, but true barbers are scarce. Sometimes
different is not better. Simple and easy - - - the way life's meant to be.

Thank you Margaret for asking how I am doing.

I am doing much much better and almost back to normal, whatever that
might
be. We had 11 inches of snow last weekend so my squad car is still
hidden

away in the county expo center.
However, we will be getting it home this weekend.

I have just scheduled 3 Mayberry presentations at area senior living
facilities. All will be in May. Yesterday I was asked to be part of
a
very large International Toy Train Expo here in Eau Claire. That will
be a
fun event. We are busy scheduling parades, car shows, and special
events,

so it won't be long and we will really be busy once again.

I had a nice surprise yesterday. Editor of a publication called
"Hidden

Treasures" called and said they were going to have a story about me in
their next publication. The magazine goes out to 22 communities in
Western

Wisconsin so it means a lot of free exposure. They send me a copy to
approve and the writer said a lot of very nice things. It is indeed
humbling. I continue to write a monthly article for the Eau Claire
Review

and May's story is about Opie and his medal.

I spent six hours earlier this week back in my small home town. My
wife
and I spent the time with four of my close high school friends. We
were

given another tour of the Dorchester Library so I could see where the
monies I donate are being used.

So you see Margaret, things are going along great for me. It was a
miserable month, but it makes me appreciate the days more when I am
feeling

better.

Lots of luck to you and yours from me and mine.

A couple of kids I attend church services with, a young boy and girl,
both
about 9 years old, have "outed" themselves as being avid TAGS
watchers. I
think both of their favorite character is Ernest T. Bass. I've been
talking
about the show with the little boy for a while. His first name is
Payne, so
I've started calling him Ernest T. Payne. The little girl and I have
been
telling each other knock-knock jokes for a few weeks. The other day,
out of
the blue, she walked up to me and said, "It's me, it's me, it's Ernest
T!
Surprise, surprise, I can see it in your eyes!" I asked her later,
"Where
are you coming up with all these Ernest T. Bass sayings?" Her
response:

"From watching Andy Griffin!" She's obviously a work in progress, but
heading in the right direction.

Does the term ?skoshi? appear in a TAGS episode? Perhaps said by

Good observation! In the small town where I grew up in West Virginia in the 50s
and early 60s, everything was closed EXCEPT the drug store, which opened for a
few hours in the afternoon so people could get needed medicines. Perhaps that
was what happened in Mayberry as well?

As I watched "The Sermon for Today" again yesterday, Andy and Barney were
talking about going down to the drug store to buy some ice cream (of
course, they never quite made it). In small-town America in the 50's and
60's, I would think that just about every type of store would have been
closed on Sunday, "the Sabbath" - especially in the South. I grew up in a
northern city, and almost nothing was open on Sundays when I was a kid. I
seem to recall at least one other TAGS episode where reference was made to
going to a store on Sunday. Just wondering.
