Piotrus and Volunteer Marek, among others, are Wikipedians mentioned in the
above article. I contacted those two individuals because I felt it was fair
for them to be aware that people were discussing them in an off wiki venue.
Anyways, Piotrus said that I could share their response:
Thank you for the information, but I am unsure how to find that particular
discussion. I am aware of the general context (the article), which is being
discussed in some places on Wikipedia. My quick comment on it is that this
article contains numerous errors and inaccuracies (mixed with an occasional
fair point or critique, nothing is white and black), and seems
significantly based on data provided to the researches by a very tainted
source, i.e. globally banned user Icewhiz, who was first topic banned the
Polish-Jewish topic area by ArbCom, then site banned from Wikimedia
Projects for harassment of myself, Volunteer Marek and others. You are

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Small joy of the day: Txikipedia

2022-06-23 Thread Clover Moss
I don't disagree with trying to make language more understandable in
general, though. If there was a children's version, it might be useful for
things like math articles. I remember looking up stuff like the quadratic
formula when I was in high school, seeing way more advanced mathematics
than I was used to and just giving up that Wikipedia could be a useful
resource for that. Obviously Wikipedia isn't the end-all be-all for
everything and it shouldn't be (obviously it wasn't meant to help me with
homework either), but I do agree with the general principle expressed that
WereSpielChequers that Wikipedia should be written for a general audience
and that's what considered inappropriate is variable depending on your life
circumstances.

Also children are individuals, just like adults. There's vastly different
levels of maturity and interest and that shouldn't be limited based on your
age, outside of extreme situations that are actually relevant to age. 12
year old me would've felt very patronized by something like this. I also
don't like the potential implications, because this could go the route of
removing content that any parent finds objectionable from being accessible.
I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness and part of the reason I lost my faith
was being able to find information about other perspectives (e.g. LGBT+
rights, atheism, blood transfusions, etc).

[Wikimedia-l] Cosa ti rende felice questa settimana?/What’s Making You Happy This Week? (Week of 22 March 2020)

2020-03-22 Thread Clover moss
* Main content *
There's been a lot that's made me happy this week. However, I realize that
right now is a difficult time for a lot of people. Before I write about
anything else, I would like to thank the real world heroes out there. I
think that no words can accurately describe the cumulative effort and
sacrifices that so many people are making everyday. I would especially like
to thank doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. I would like to
thank people who provide shelter and food to other people in need. I want
to thank the countless parents that are doing everything they can. I want
to thank caregivers for what they do everyday. I extend my sympathies to
anyone who is going through a really difficult time right now, because so
many people are facing struggles that I can't even begin to imagine.

Sometimes, it's the small and seemingly inconsequential moments that can
really matter. For me, that's been doing my best to do what I can. Living
in those moments of joy where I find them. This week, that involved lots of
oatmeal and tea, taking a brief walk outside to feel the wind, and reading
for hours on end. I have also listened to music. If anyone is curious, I
absolutely adore _My Favorite Things_[1] from _The Sound of Music_[2]. I
think I gravitated towards it because even though life can be scary
sometimes, remembering your favourite things can help get you through that.

I've also spent time on Wikipedia, and there are a lot of good things
happening on-wiki. There's a new WikiProject dedicated to Wikipedia's
coverage of COVID-19 and the ongoing pandemic: WikiProject COVID-19[3].
There are so many editors actively contributing there, and it's
heartwarming to see this kind of intense collaboration and dedication. The
ramifications of these actions have a very real impact on the real world.
It's amazing that so many people are doing their best to help others. I'm
thankful for that, and to everyone who tries to make the world a better
place.

[Wikimedia-l] Vad gläder dig den här veckan? / What's making you happy this week? (Week of 8 March 2020)

2020-03-12 Thread Clover moss
There is a lot that is making me happy this week. I'm happy that I'm back
to contributing to "On The Bright Side" and the "What's Making You Happy
This Week?" threads again because it's something I look forward to. It's
nice to think and reflect upon the positivity across the Wikimedia
movement. I'm also thankful to Pine for helping me send this email in plain
text formatting.

This week, I read an interesting article from Wired entitled "Wikipedia Is
The Last Best Place On The Internet". A link to the article can be found
here: [1]. I really enjoyed reading this, and I agree that Wikipedia really
has come a long way since 2007. The extent of Wikipedia's influence has
grown considerably and has had such an impact on the world today that I
really couldn't even imagine what the world would be like without it.

I am looking forward to the start of the Wikigap Challenge [2], which is
taking place on March 8, 2020. This challenge is receiving help from the UN
Human Rights Office [3] which is incredible and not something that happens
everyday. However, it seems like there's always something interesting going
on when I check Wikimedia-l, and that's thanks to the dedicated efforts of
countless editors.

Here's a photo of the launch of Wikigap 2020 in Naga City,
Philippines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WikiGap_PH_2020_launch.jpg.
The photo is by User:Filipinayzd. [4]

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Treatment of newbies with mild CoI

2020-03-01 Thread Clover moss
Sometimes, instead of patrolling recent changes for vandalism, I'll change
the filter to "good faith edits" and "unregistered". A lot of edits made
under IP addresses are constructive, and I send out welcomes that way. I
also check my watchlist and welcome people. I like using the thank button
as well, and give wikilove (to new and experienced editors). I find that
reachng out to a newbie with a personal message along the lines of "you're
doing a good work and I noticed that" is usually fairly well-recieved.

From Clovermoss and Pine, writing together for this week:
Thanks to User:Dungodung for
the Serbian translation of What's making you happy this week?

English Wikipedia passed the 6 million article milestone. Determining the
exact 6 millionth article is challenging. A community discussion

narrowed the list to a few likely possibilities. There is no tool that
currently exists that can determine which article is the 6 millionth. One
difficulty in determining the winner is that articles are moved and deleted
while others are being created.

On the 18:59 timestamp on 23 February 2020, 15 articles were submitted:
Auto-trolling , Castle Folds
, Mysore Sand Sculpture Museum
, Egon Hartmann
, Kalashree Seashell Museum
, Giovanni Ricci
(mathematician)
, Enno Dirksen
, Giovanni Prodi
, David Notkin
, A. Nico Habermann Award
, Videniškiai
, Lidia Kulikovski
, Maria Elise Turner Lauder
, Andrei Bolocan
, and Raymonde Verlinden
.

The community decided to celebrate the article for Maria Elise Turner
Lauder , who was a
Canadian philanthropist and writer. The article was created by
User:Rosiestep .

Rosiestep is well known in the community. She joined Wikipedia in 2007 and
was elected an administrator in 2009. She is an co-organizer for WikiConference

This week, I learned about Wiki Loves Monuments
. The wording kind of
sounded familiar at first, but I wasn't sure why. I didn't really know what
Wiki Loves Monuments was and now I'm thankful that I do. A lot goes into a
good photograph and really good photographs have a way of striking me with
awe in a way that's hard to describe with words.

There were 25 announcements for the top winners and the winner was
announced on January 14th. I love the way the sunlight shines in through
the windows - it seems surreal, and it's almost like I'm standing there
myself. I don't know what the temperature would be like inside the church,
but I felt slightly cold looking at it. I'd imagine there isn't any heating
currently in the building because it's abandoned, although maybe I'm
thinking too much about details like that?

From User:Pine

The 15th of January is the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
, who was a civil
rights leader in the United
States. Every year, the first Monday after his birthday is a U.S. national
holiday . English
Wikiquote selected a quote from him as its Quote of the Day for 15 January
2020 .
Although my memories of this are vague, I think that my elementary school
used the holiday as an occasion for students to learn about history. I am
thankful for my teachers who taught us civics
 and the responsibilities of
citizenship in a republic
.

I'm thankful this week for discovering an interesting task force: Women in
Green . The goals of this task
force involves creating GA-class articles on women and women's works. One
of the goals for this year is 20 new GAs. I've known about Women in Red
 for
awhile now, and I'm thankful for the work everyone has put into both Women
in Green and Women in Red. I'm amazed at the hard work that went into the
creation of 14,480 articles for January-July 2019, and I'm looking forward
to updated statistics for WiR for August-December 2019.

This week marks the 19th anniversary of the launch of Wikipedia. I would
like to highlight a 2019 editorial by Tim Berners-Lee
, the creator of the world
wide web , that was published
in The New York Times . The
title of the editorial is, "I Invented the World Wide Web. Here’s How We
Can Fix It." Berners-Lee writes, "I wanted the web to serve humanity. It’s
not too late to live up to that promise... I had hoped that 30 years from
its creation, we would be using the web foremost for the purpose of serving
humanity. Projects like Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap and the world of open
source software are the kinds of constructive tools that I hoped would flow
from the web." Berners-Lee goes on to advocate for making improvements to
the Web. I invite you to read the entire editorial

[Wikimedia-l] 今週の嬉しいことは何ですか?/ What's making you happy this week? (Week of 5 January 2020)

2020-01-08 Thread Clover moss
Hello colleagues,
I'm Clovermoss, and I'm sending out the email thread this week.
* From Clovermoss *
I have smiled several times this week, and I'm thankful for that. I'm
thankful for the start of another year and another decade. I have observed
and participated in a lot of WikiLove between editors wishing each other a
happy new year. I'm excited for what 2020 will bring, as I'm anticipating
some important milestones being reached this year in my life.

I saw an interesting thread on the mailing list

about
an astronaut editing Wikipedia from the ISS
, and I'm thankful that my curiousity
about Earth and beyond has been piqued. I was one of those kids who used to
dream about being an astronaut. I still think of that career path as
fascinating, although not one I am likely to take myself. I admire people
who follow their dreams, whatever those dreams happen to be.

* From Pine *
"Email from the Analytics mailing list: "Introducing statistics for media
files

".

Hi everybody,

Just in time for the holidays, we're announcing the addition of Media
Requests to our metrics catalog. Over the last few months we've been
working on a dataset offering request numbers for every single image,
audio, video and document in the Wiki universe, since 2015.

This means we have 3 new metrics available in the Analytics Query Service:

* Media requests per referrer: e.g. how many images, audio, videos... have
been accessed from English Wikipedia in the last month? '''73 billion for
November.'''
* Media requests per file: e.g. how many hits did [[Christmas
tree#/media/File:Yggdrasil.jpg|this cool painting]] get in November? The
answer is 483,791 hits.
* Top files by media requests: e.g. what was the most popular video
yesterday, December 22nd? Fred Rogers testifying before the Senate
Subcommittee on Communications. Fun! You can check out the top 1000 media
files for any month or day, for any media type.

Media requests is, in terms of absolute numbers, a huge dataset, so the per
file and top metrics are still being loaded with data all the way to 2015.
We expect this loading to finish in mid January.

You can read more about this in Wikitech. As usual if you have any
questions about the dataset or the new metrics please send them our way
here on the list or via Phabricator.

Happy holidays!
