[Wikimedia-SF] Maker Faire 2012
First: *Save the dates for Maker Faire Bay Area: May 19 20 2012* Ok, now that's out of the way... Phoebe and I have been nominally in charge of the WMF booth for the last few years. Not that we both don't LOVE Maker Faire and love every second we are there... but it's exhausting... and we need some time off. So before we get too close to Maker Faire, Phoebe and I are officially handing off the reigns to The List (IE You guys and gals). *We'd love for someone to speak up and take charge of the Maker Faire booth organization this year. * We're happy to help out (as normal people), but someone else needs to take the lead. If you're interested in Maker Faire (or trying to figure out what the heck I'm talking about) please see: - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_2010 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_2011 So far as I can tell, Maker registration is not open yet. So we've still got time to make plans and make them good! Also, for your planning enjoyment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_2012 Thanks -Jon (And Phoebe, who cannot be blamed for my terrible writing) -- Jon [[User:ShakataGaNai]] / KJ6FNQ http://snowulf.com/ http://ipv6wiki.net/ ___ Wikimedia-SF mailing list Wikimedia-SF@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-sf
Re: [Wikimedia-SF] new list members; and a reminder about Maker Faire
Yay! Maker Faire! I'll be gathering much electronics, but they won't be of much good unless people have some content to put on them. Suggestions for apps are on the wiki [1]. I think I might even be able to convince the merchandise masters at the Foundation to toss in some swag for volunteers, but we won't know how much if you don't sign up. -Jon [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Maker_Faire_2011#Game_.26_viz_list On Sun, May 15, 2011 at 19:43, phoebe ayers phoebe.ay...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, I just added several new list members -- welcome, everyone! Re: [Wikimedia-SF] maker faire this year
What can I say? Its no fun if my notes make sense to anyone else. Let me explicate: - people thought our stickers were tatoos. They actually really wanted em as such. Lil late to explore that at this point but I can ask jay - someone thought a jimmy side scroller (Ala Mario) would be fun. Vandals instead of koombas. Use your imagination. Also probably too much work for now - citation needed game was a theory for some sort of true/false game. Like how en.WP homepage is all real facts on april 1? Take those plus some actual lies (and some easier facts) and put them into a webish format game. Cake for a programmer, but we'd need to collect the info for em - we need some offline presentations to give, in case we lose internet access. The wifi got murdered last year and we were effectivly offline for half of saturday until they got us ethernet. - aux internet is exactly what it sounds like. Jack from wiki how brought a cellmodem and shared access with us for a while My 2 cents? Give people games/interactive activities and have handouts. We've done this for 3 years now and almost never get people to edit. Lets be honest, its maker fire...you get to play with cool toys and watch cupcake cars go chasing about...no one wants to sit about and edit. I think the best we can do is educate them about the other projects (the WMF Trading Card went over fairly decently) and that they _can_ edit (with a how to and maybe some suggestions on places to start, like home town) 3 weeks? This is gonna be fun- -Jon On Apr 30, 2011 6:04 PM, Stephen LaPorte stephen.lapo...@gmail.com wrote: Good news, we have a spot for Maker Faire on May 21 and 22! Last year we had computers with Wikipedia games (the language guessing game and the article race game), a larger screen with a map of recent changes, and volunteers talked to people and answered questions. [Wikimedia-SF] Free Stuff!
Howdy All, I'll be brief. Roughly a year ago the Foundation moved to a new office in San Francisco and inherited a server room full of equipment. Some of it has been put to use over the last year, some of it hasn't. I do contract work for the Foundation and one of my side projects is cleaning up the space. We'd love to make it more useful, and we can't do that with a bunch of gear sitting about. As such, I've made a sizeable list of gear that the Foundation would love to donate to a good home. Right now the list contains an assortment server related goodies, including 2 post rack shelves (count 60+), CAT5 patch panels, wire dividers, 42U Racks and some other goodies. You can find the entire list on Meta [1] (which I hope is an acceptable place to keep it). As noted, all the equipment is located here in San Francisco, and unfortunately there isn't time (or space) to pack it up for shipping - so it is available by pickup only (hence why I'm only mailing sf ca lists). I'm happy as long as the equipment finds a home, but If you happen to know a non-profit that might be interested (even better!), please forward this message along to them - or let me know. I'll be happy to try and work it out with them. So the end all, be all, is that I screwed up in planning. This is the first time we ever scheduled a meet that wasn't something small. No one (except Cary) thought to define a specific point, and I didn't see the Facebook notice myself until after the fact. Now we know that in the future, any meetups in locations bigger than a restaurant - should have a very specific location. How about we get some GPS coordinates going too? [Wikimedia-SF] Maker Faire Wrap Up
This evening brought another years Maker Faire to a close, for better or worse. It wasn't a perfectly smooth operation, but we managed to get done what we needed to and have some fun while we were at it. For everyone that had trouble getting there/getting in/finding the gate/etc, I'm sorry. We thought we had everything figured out, but Maker Faire loves to change things up on us, I guess that is part of the adventure. It was a rather long weekend, but we answered lots of questions and only had a few instances of the Thorium Protocol. Best of all, we got a rather decent sum of donations. It wasn't no $10 million, but it was about 50% more than we got last year. All in all, a job well done - To those of you that helped us in the planning and preparation stages for the last few months, it was worth it. - To the each and every volunteer and foundation staff that spent a shift at the booth: __Thank you s much__. The shift system might have seemed a little crazy, but it worked out - To Brion, for making us a new (Offline) Guess The Language in something like an hour, it was amazingly popular all weekend. - To our friends at WikiHow whom were kind enough to loan us use of their Wifi/Verizon card hack during the Great Wifi Debacle of Saturday morning - kick ass. - To Phoebe, my partner in crime (who deserves a ton of credit for making sure everything worked out, contrary to what she's been saying about 'not being in charge'): Why do we keep doing this? ^_^ - Lastly, to everyone whom stopped by to show their support (even if they couldn't volunteer), we appreciate the love. Now I'm gonna go sleep for the next 48 hours- -Jon PS. Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Maker Faire - Shift Signup (Traffic/Parking)
There is actually a lot of parking lots in the area of Saratoga Dr (towards Hillsdale) that are free and shuttles run from the area. That being said, if you want to park close (and are there early), you can pay to be _right there_. Though it is $17 a day now - be warned. I came from 101/Hillsdale exit once and that worked out fairly decently since you end up _right_ near where they have the free parking lots. [Wikimedia-SF] Mini-Meet (#14?) Saturday, May 1. Afternoon-ish.
Ok people, all things fast and loose. Maker Fair last minute planning and such meeting. Basic things like figuring out what has been done, still needs to be done or isn't going to get done. Plus some hanging out, maybe food. Haven't figured out the exact details on when, but the approximate goes like this: Who: Anyone that wants to hang out, or be involved in Maker Faire, or pick on us that are trying to figure out what's going on What: Mostly Maker Faire Where: San Francisco, Maybe somewhere with food (if so, we can push the meeting time towards a meal time) When: Saturday, May 1 @ ~3pm Why: Phoebe thought it would be a good idea. Basically after May 1, we should have down pay what is and isn't going to happen. Maker Faire isn't until the end of the moth, but for all those things that need time to prep - we need to be finishing em up soon. -Jon PS. [Wikimedia-SF] Meetup #12 is this weekend!
All, In case you've forgotten (I know I did), SF Meetup #12 is this weekend. Specifically Sunday @ 2pm @ Yahoo! HQ. Gotta put your name down in advance so you can be put on the list for Yahoo! security. Chatter about Maker Faire mostly, and I'm sure other things like what is going on in April. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco_12 -- Jon [[User:ShakataGaNai]] / KJ6FNQ http://photo.snowulf.com/ - Buy a pic, feed a photog. http://snowulf.com/ ___ Wikimedia-SF mailing list Wikimedia-SF@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-sf
Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Meetup _12: March Making for Maker Faire
I'd them who is incharge of the meetup should pick a date. I think weekend of the 12-14 is probably not a good idea due to St Patrick's day. Otherwise I'd say anything works (my vote is March 6th). Don't tweet at Cary, he shuns the twitter. Identica is the answer. -Jon On Mon, Feb 15, 2010 at 23:04, James Salsman jsals...@gmail.com wrote: Micha all, Is half a month away too early to ask people to list their preferred dates and/or times on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco_12 ? The only non-active part scheduled, is proofreading (or, finishing) stuff for Maker Faire that didn't get finished online or at _12. To that end, should we try to do as much as the preparation on line beforehand as possible? There are ideas for everyone. Some of them are linked to completed projects, some of them are completely new, some of them are in between, and some of them I don't really understand. Also, I tried to tweet you and Cary -- are we allowed to use the Office again? Many of us didn't get to see the big conference room which was reserved for the Board meeting during _11. As far as I can remember, everyone behaved in an exemplary manner, so I hope so. Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Summary of today's meetup
First I'd like to say thank you to everyone that came. I'd also like to thank the Board and Foundation staff that joined us. Biggest meetup we've had in a long time. I wasn't too sure how an agenda would work out with the ground, but everything seemed to have gone well enough, we got stuff done, and that's what is important. Regarding pictures, generally I've posted what I've had w/o checking first. People who don't want their pictures taken generally don't show up, or do a good job dodging the cameras. Plus they can simply not be identified (or request image be deleted). Below is my very brief notes that I scratched down from memory afterwards. I've put them on the wiki. If you have other notes of your own about specific topics, please feel free to update the wiki. I know that I'm missing a lot of little bits and all sorts of details. ...crickets chirping and all that jazz... Anyways, the last meeting 2 important suggestions came up. 1) We should have meet ups more often (like once a month) with the knowledge that people simply wont make every single one (rather than trying to accommodate everyone every time). 2) We should have field trips - translation: We should have a meetup where we go and _do_ something rather than sit around and chat. Since last time we talked, I'd say we should do a field trip. We've got a small list on-wiki already [[w:Wikipedia:Meetup/San Francisco#Future]] ( http://enwn.net/Ae10 ). Oooo Buttons. How about a few of the giant Wikipedia stickers? Those are always favorites (and generally hidden away for good measure). Anyways, I was curious myself if anything was going to be happening this year. So I'm totally game to help out how ever is needed. I can gather desktop computers to be used (if someone can find monitors) and related networking gear - should it be useful. -Jon On Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 12:40, Jay Walsh jwa...@wikimedia.org wrote: There actually is an 'education' day beforehand where exhibitors can get in front of a massive school audience.
