As a side note, I'm in fact slightly more in favour of the Saturday, too. My message below was really sent as the person who signed the contract with the Youth Hostel, and while I don't remember specifically the conditions for changing anything, I know we can not simply modify the date in the same way as we modify a wiki. [Wikimediach-l] Wikimedia CH media training: 17 January 2013 in Lausanne
Dear all, many of Wikimedia contributors have had to talk to the press. In some cases, it is the volunteer who contacts a journalist -- maybe by sending a press release about a piece of news he/she would like the journal to talk about. In other cases, the journalist directly contacts a volunteer he wants to interview on a topic of interest. Over the past few years, we have all experienced cases where journalists did not know how the Wikimedia world works. But often, Wikimedia contributors do not know either how the journalism world works, and what are the rules and usages when talking with journalists. In order to improve this situation, Wikimedia CH has organized an half-day workshop with an experienced journalist, during which we will learn how to interact with the press. In particular, he will look at and comment on some of the press releases that Wikimedia CH has prepared and distributed over the years, and see how they could be improved. Most importantly, he will be ready to answer any question we may have. The workshop will take in the auditorium of the "Musée cantonal de zoologie" in Lausanne (Palais de Rumine, Place de la Riponne 6) on friday 17 janvier, starting at 9:30 until lunch time. The presentation will be in English, and the discussion in English or French, depending on the participants (the press releases we will discuss will be in French, though). Attendance is free for regular contributors in the Wikimedia communauty; other interested people should contact us. To register, please email i...@wikimedia.ch. Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any further question, or if you already have particular questions you would like to get answered during the workshop. Best wishes, Frédéric ___ http://wikimedia.ch Wikimedia CH website Wikimediach-l mailing list https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediach-l

I think now is the right time to stop this discussion, which started in an interesting direction (points about copyright law), but is leading nowhere. I am not able to differentiate a repro station from another one, and I would not be able to recognize if the "design" of the reprostation comes from Bruno or not, so I'll take Ludo's word for it that he created it. But I, for one, prefer to stick to what I know: the reprostation provided by Bruno was duly paid by Wikimedia CH; I don't know where you got the idea that is was provided for free. > You people make me sick, when you take the achievements of others and set up > a prohibition against their using them! I'm sorry if you get sick so easily, but I think the issue has been somewhat exagerated. I haven't seen anyone here setting up a prohibition against anyone else using anything. The people I know in this mailing-list all work in good faith for promoting free content, and making sure that their work *can* be used. Proper attribution to the author is important; that isthe point that (as I understand it) Ludovic wanted to make, and we likely all agree about this. [Wikimediach-l] Wikimedia CH has just hired two new directors
her to any of the discussions that took place afterwards during the hiring process for both positions, until the final choice made by the rest of the board, and resigned immediately after being told he was chosen. During the process, we received the advice of Dominique Freymond, a widely-recognized Swiss expert in governance (http://www.mas-ltd.ch/index.php?page=97), who helped us eliminate possible conflicts of interests. In particular, it was determined that our president did not have to resign during the selection process. The main people taking part in the recruiting committee were Chantal Ebongué, Ilario Valdelli and Frédéric Schütz, who followed the entire process. Several other people from the board, the staff, our members and external people were involved at one step or another, commenting on the process or the applications and participating to the interviews. Board transition The board has chosen current board member Patrick Kenel as president of the board ad interim, and Frédéric Schütz as vice-president ad interim. The current priority goes to the upcoming FDC application and the annual fundraiser; the organization of these activities does not depend on the transition, and so will not be affected in any way. The next general assembly is planned on 22 March 2014, and a new president will be elected at that time. Before finishing this long email, I would like to thank Chantal Ebongué again for the huge work she did while working with us, and for her collaboration within the hiring committee. Some informal exchanges of files are still done using Dropbox; now is probably a good time to get rid of them. I propose to invite all concerned users to: * create a WMCH mailbox for them * change the target email address to something more acceptable like email box from the provider or european web mails like GMX. Full disclosure: I am one of the people who have their @wikimedia.ch email forwarded; in my case, it goes to a Swiss provider (with servers located in Switzerland).
As a reminder, Wikimedia CH is ready to help potential photographers who would like to try to get accreditations for these (or other) events. These can include for example providing photographers with an actual affiliation (with supporting documentation if required), as well as letters of reference (indicating why getting good pictures on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons is a good idea, both for us and for the organizers of the events). The only constraints is that it requires coordination (so that no two photographers try independently to get an accreditation in the name of Wikimedia CH for the same event). The idea is good, and applies not only for sponsoring equipment, but for any project which would benefit from funding from Wikimedia CH -- provided that the project would further the goals of Wikimedia CH, of course. Even without a formal procedure, the following steps are probably a good starting point if you are interested (send your request to i...@wikimedia.ch): 1) Who is the person/entity looking for equipment 2) What is needed, and a budget (who will pay what, and what other sources of funding have been considered) 3) How the funding will be used, and how it will help the goals of Wikimedia CH (e.g. by producing material for Wikipedia/Commons/other projects that we could not get otherwise, with extra bonus points for material specially related to Switzerland) In the case of sponsoring of a service (e.g. scanning), this is probably enough. Physical equipment adds a few other questions, such as who the material will belong to, what happens if/when it is not needed anymore, etc. It has been done in the past, for a lense, as you mention (it was used to get coverage of events in Switzerland), but also for other pieces of equipment such as hard disks (until recently, these disks, paid by Wikimedia CH, contained the most exhaustive archive of consultation statistics of Wikimedia-related projects, and this data was not available anywhere else, because few people were systematically archiving them; there is now a bit of duplication, if only because in the meantime we have provided the data to some academic groups who were interested in doing some research on them). If anyone else has good ideas for such projects, don't hesitate. We could/should probably mention it on the web site.
