Re: [WISPA] 900MHz performance (Latency, Throughput)

2006-02-20 Thread Pete Davis
The 900Mhz pricing has always been higher than 2.4ghz 802.11x on price.
Probably always will be.
What 900mhz buys you is NLOS performance. 900mhz links will cut through
trees that 802.11b only dreams about.
I am not sure how well the new Ubiquiti cards running 802.11 on them
will do with NLOS. Waverider is the 900mhz I am familiar with, and part
of the positive things about it are the way it will retry packets up to
3 times before failing them. I don't think that 802.11 has a packet
retry as part of its protocol. Another downside of Waverider (or any
other 900mhz as far as I know) its that a Waverider 900mhz Access point
(CCU) is only good for 2mbps total network throughput, and 1.5mbps to
any one client.

Setting the GOS (Grade of service) to 1024k and setting the queue in

 HI All,

I'm a wireless network consultant in my 'other life' and thought you
 all might get
a real charge out of seeing what some people call a 'commercial tower install'

The tower in the pictures is used by a TV translator system , but a new WISP
in Ky. is thinking of putting up a system on the tower also.

He is experiencing a whole lot of electrical noise when he mounts his antennas
on the tower, but he can hold them in his hand, not mounted, and the noise
goes away. So now he's thinking of wrapping the mounts with electrical tape to
insulate them from the tower and install his equipment. (Good
 electrical practice?)

My comment to him was tie a cable to his bumper and to the tower and
drive away from the tower, this way he would be doing both the tower owner and
himself a favor. No kidding aside, as you can see in the pictures
 (#13 - #27)
 the tower is a mess.

 http://www.kywifi.com/images/vptower/index.php

Gawd, ham's get hassled in California for a 30' tower, and in Ky. you can just
put of anything, anyway and use it ,, Go figure.

2006-02-20 Thread KyWiFi LLC
I just joined the WISPA list this past week to see what it's
all about. I don't know much about WISPA at this point
so that's why I'm here. Is there a page somewhere on the
WISPA web site that lists all members? I would be interested
in seeing who are members. We are a member of KYISPA
(Kentucky Association of ISP's) and several of the member
ISP's are also deploying wireless but I haven't heard any of
them mention WISPA. At our next monthly meeting, I plan
on getting their input to see if any of them are members. I'm
not a big fan of joining non-local organizations but WISPA
looks like a good group to be associated with so that's why
I'm giving it a look.

Shannon,

You can go to http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless and login
with your email and password to view the current membership of the
wireless@wispa.org listserv. Let me know privately if you forgot your
password.

Currently the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list is private to all paid members.
We discuss things on that list that we do not discuss on the open
wireless@wispa.org list. There are currently about 50 paid members of
WISPA. We would like to double that number in 2006. We have tried to
maintain an affordable membership fee so that we can attract more members.
New membership applications can be found at

http://www.kywifi.com/images/vptower/CIMG5548.jpg

Also - came across this post on tower talk , figured we all may be able to learn a
little bit about house cleaning from this.

 Who is Bob Smith ?

 *Bob Smith Wrote*

My comment to him was "tie a cable to his bumper and to the tower and
drive away from the tower, this way he would be doing both the tower owner and
himself a favor".

Hiya Toots!

That last joke you sent me want funny! I'd
have beaten the biker dude! LOL

Anyhow, which show you should go to really depends
on what you want to do. If I had my way I'd go to ALL of them. They
ALL have something to offer if you're willing to listen and
learn.

I just got back from the annual www.ec-expo.com. That's a free show with
lots of product specific stuff. There's a GREAT group that goes to this
one and lots of help is available. Charles, Matt, I, Damien (Tranzeo), and
a few others (forgive me) had a very good very high level chat about a number of
things. I picked up quite a few new bits from here and there. AND I
ran into David Huges. I hope I am half as with it at 78 as he is!
(Yeah yeah, I'm already half as good. Har har grin)

WISPCON has always been about nothing but
wisps.

WCA is more carrier based.

ISPCon is a GREAT show. The wireless track is
light as there's usually only one track. But there's a lot to running a
wisp than just wireless stuff.

I think about the best mix would be to go to one or
two different ones each year.

That help?

  Excellent post, Tom.

I have been an attendee and a presenter at
WISPCON I and II. Once with anOptical Wireless company, Plaintree
Systems and once with Marlon's startupof 2002, WNOC. Both were
  outstanding experiences.

I personally got alot of value from the WISPCON
shows, especially meeting the people behind the posts on this (and other)
  lists.

Those WISPCON days were more about the
relationships. This list has some close roots, and the shows then
were about connecting, wirelessly and spiritually, so-to-speak. I met
Marlon and Bullet and Steve Stroh (hiya Steve!) for the first time in Chicago,
and it was a hoot!Learning and having fun are two things that do it for
me, especially if I can do them at the same time.

I have been away from the directWISP loop
since 2002,running my own kind of Networking
business. However, I still enjoy the WISP listconversations,
  and have stayed in touch.

And am glad I did stay in touch, for I have just
signed an agreement to work with a company called Arryba Communications -
whose mission is to provide high speed Internet to Rural Eastern Ontario
  (that's me!).Besides being obvious self-interest, Arryba has a
very interesting business model, and their timing and leadership are spot
  on.

I would like to attend a spring show, and would
beinterested in knowing where the best shows are now, for its time for
me to reconnect with the WISP world. Marlon? Steve? Victoria?
  Where do you guys hang?

Ido not necessarilly think that the
quality of WISPCON has degraded that much. Its more thatthe attendee
WISP basehas matured, and looking for new attractions, and new shows
have popped up to attract them. Once a WISP has went to WISPCON 3-4
times in a row, they start trying shows that offer something
different. WiNog offering, more techncial exchange discussion between
experienced operators, which has shown to be extremely valueable to the
WISPs that have been there done that. ISPCON, for WISPs looking for
more than just wireless technology knowledge. As WISPs mature they start to
learn that business strategy is more important, and all operations of the
busines such as services, is as important as the wireless technolegy.
This is one of the reasons I got involved with ISPCON, and think its the
best overall show. Its one of the reasons the show is filled by
executives as well as staff from the large ISPs. However, each show has its
unique benefits. WISPCON has a tremendous amount to offer a newbie WISP, who
has one primary goal, to learn what Wireless is about. I'd argue that
WISPCON is probably the best show for a new technican to learn more about
wireless. ISPCON has been fantastic for people deciding whether they
should get into wireless. WiNog, for advanced WISPs. However, this is
a very generalized summary. You can find a little bit about everything from
all the shows.

My personal opinion is, that if someone had to
chose just one show to attend, it would be

RE: [WISPA] Wispcon?

2006-02-20 Thread Charles Wu
Title: Message

Hi
Linda,

This
is what Steve Stroh has to say about WiNOG, WISPCON, Broadband Wireless World,
WiMAXWorld

WiNOG is well-positioned to serve
a segment of the Broadband Wireless industry that has gone unnoticed and
unserved. PART-15.ORGs WISPCON focuses on smaller and startup Wireless Internet
Service Providers (WISPs), The combination of Wireless Communications
Associations (WCA) two annual conferences, Shorecliff Communications Broadband
Wireless World, and Trendsmedias WiMAX World focuses on much larger Broadband
Wireless Internet Access Service Providers.

WiNOG targets WISPs that are well
beyond the startup phase in longevity of business, overall scale of business,
network, and number of customers, but have not yet grown to have their needs met
by the three larger conferences. This is a very real, but specialized market
segment, and Charles Wu, Operating Manager of CWLab, has laser-focused WiNOG to
serve this segment very well. While WiNOG is an ideal conference to attend for
WISPs that are intent on growing larger and have already started to endure the
pains of growth, WiNOGs main audience is to provide peer-to-peer experience
exchanges between the Big WISPs.

  Hiya Toots!

That last joke you sent me want funny! I'd
have beaten the biker dude! LOL

Anyhow, which show you should go to really
depends on what you want to do. If I had my way I'd go to ALL of
them. They ALL have something to offer if you're willing to listen and
  learn.

I just got back from the annual www.ec-expo.com. That's a free show
with lots of product specific stuff. There's a GREAT group that goes to
this one and lots of help is available. Charles, Matt, I, Damien
(Tranzeo), and a few others (forgive me) had a very good very high level chat
about a number of things. I picked up quite a few new bits from here and
there. AND I ran into David Huges. I hope I am half as with it at
78 as he is! (Yeah yeah, I'm already half as good. Har har
  grin)

WISPCON has always been about nothing but
  wisps.

  WCA is more carrier based.

ISPCon is a GREAT show. The wireless track
is light as there's usually only one track. But there's a lot to running
a wisp than just wireless stuff.

I think about the best mix would be to go to one
or two different ones each year.

Excellent post, Tom.

I have been an attendee and a presenter at
WISPCON I and II. Once with anOptical Wireless company,
Plaintree Systems and once with Marlon's startupof 2002, WNOC.
Both were outstanding experiences.

I personally got alot of value from the WISPCON
shows, especially meeting the people behind the posts on this (and other)
lists.

Those WISPCON days were more about the
relationships. This list has some close roots, and the shows then
were about connecting, wirelessly and spiritually, so-to-speak. I met
Marlon and Bullet and Steve Stroh (hiya Steve!) for the first time in
Chicago, and it was a hoot!Learning and having fun are two things that
do it for me, especially if I can do them at the same time.

I have been away from the directWISP loop
since 2002,running my own kind of Networking
business. However, I still enjoy the WISP
listconversations, and have stayed in touch.

And am glad I did stay in touch, for I have
just signed an agreement to work with a company called Arryba Communications
- whose mission is to provide high speed Internet to Rural Eastern Ontario
(that's me!).Besides being obvious self-interest, Arryba has a
very interesting business model, and their timing and leadership are spot
on.

I would like to attend a spring show, and would
beinterested in knowing where the best shows are now, for its time for
me to reconnect with the WISP world. Marlon? Steve? Victoria?
Where do you guys hang?

Ido not necessarilly think that the
quality of WISPCON has degraded that much. Its more thatthe attendee
WISP basehas matured, and looking for new attractions, and new shows
have popped up to attract them. Once a WISP has went to WISPCON 3-4
times in a row, they start trying shows that offer something
different. WiNog offering, more techncial exchange discussion
between experienced operators, which has shown to be extremely valueable
to the WISPs that have been there done that. ISPCON, for WISPs
looking for more than just wireless technology knowledge. As WISPs mature
they start to learn that business strategy is more important, and all
operations of the busines such as services, is as important as the
wireless technolegy. This is one of the reasons I got involved with
ISPCON, and think its the best overall show. Its one of the reasons
  the show is

For this, I've normally used an Ethernet fiber converter. Cat5 - Fiber on
the tower and Fiber - Cat5 down below.

These are standard 10/100 megabit Ethernet converters readily available
from networking supply houses.

Does anyone know of a good isolator for cat5? I want to really protect
my network from a tower mounted radio.
