RE: [WISPA] OSPF routing question (nubie to OSPF)

2006-10-16 Thread Russ Kreigh

Marshall -

In my option that is the best way to migrate.

In Cisco world (and probably all routers), routes are indexed by an
administrative distance. Static routes have an AD of 1, BGP-20, OSPF-110,
etc. Whichever one has the best distance, is the one that the router
installs in the routing table.

So, you can turn up OSPF all over, verifiy that they are adjacent, then
remove your static routes one by one.

Subject: [WISPA] OSPF routing question (nubie to OSPF)

All,

I have a fully and manually routed network of 5-10 subnets. I am about to
upgrade one of my backhaul links to 5G, and thought now might be a time to
get my feet wet with OSPF. I clearly see how the manual routing tables are
not very scale-able. Here is my one question before I spend too much time
including OSPF as part of the upgrade.

Can I run OSPF on a system that has my manual static routes, but OSPF is
attached to a new interface. At the other end of the new interface, is an
OSPF interface on another manually routed system.
Would this work? This way I could preserve network stability by changing
only one small part of the network and OSPF. Later, I could remove some of
my manual routes and add OSPF to other routers.

Is this possible? Is this a practical way to migrate away from static
routing? Any better suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Marshall

Re[2]: [WISPA] Initial SR9 test results

2006-10-16 Thread Barry at Mutual Data
Hello KyWiFi,

As someone who has many towers with 900 omni's ( and many years
supporting them), this combo ( SR9 plus mikrotik/starOS/whatever) eliminates
the desire to ever deploy an omni again. IMHO.

Some of our most rural areas are so polluted in 900mhz, an omni just
doesn't cut it.

Mikrotik now needs GPS polling..

KL Well, I finally got time to hang the 900 A/P tonight. MT with SR9 on a 532a.
KL Client is a Rb112. Superpass 10dbi sector and a 10dbi panel for the client.

be a company with only business customers that are under contract for

There are ways of getting a better premium, but I haven't found too many

RE: [WISPA] StarOS/WRAP/CM9 Issue

2006-10-16 Thread Eje Gustafsson
Since clients are talking to this particular CM9 I assume your using a
sector or an omni? Are you using Coax surge protector that is properly
grounded? Atheros cards are using a rf selector switch which is fairly
sensitive and easily get damaged which results in about 20dB signal loss
which in many cases means no association from clients. The other radio is
also a CM9 but your using a highly directional antenna that don't pick up as
much static energy as an omni (worst ones) or sector.

 Subject: [WISPA] StarOS/WRAP/CM9 Issue

We are experiencing a recurring problem with one of the WRAP
boards running StarOS with CM-9 cards in our network. The problem
initially started out with the board locking up every 3 - 4 days like
clockwork. The problem was resolved by an onsite reboot because
I was unable to login to the board and it was unresponsive after it
locked up. After several onsite visits over the past month and after
replacing the power supply, poe injector and Cat5 surge protectors
on both ends of the Cat5, I decided that it was a bad WRAP board
so I replaced it with a new one. To be on the safe side, I re-configured
the board manually without uploading the server.dat backup file. The
board worked fine for a week and then the clients on wpci1 lost their
connection. I was able to login to the board and reboot it this time but
the reboot did not resolve the issue. None of the clients on this CM-9
were able to re-associate to it following the reboot. The issue was
 resolved
by replacing that particular CM-9 card with a new one. Well, a week later,
it is doing the same exact thing again. The other CM-9 is working properly
as it is serving a BH link to one of our other sites. The signal on it is
 normal
and clients are passing traffic through it (wpci2) normally. Has anyone
experienced this type of problem in their own network? At this point, I am
thinking we received a bad batch of CM-9 cards or there is a problem with
the Cat5. Being that it is happening with the same card slot (wpci1) I
 honestly
do not feel it is a Cat5 related issue so I'm leaning more towards it
 being
a bad batch of CM-9 cards or defective WRAP board. Any tips on further
troubleshooting this issue? What are the odds of it being a problem with
 the Cat5 cable?

Re: [WISPA]CovadExpandsBroadband WirelessNetworkWithDataFloAcquisition

2006-10-16 Thread Tom DeReggi
That depends on how much had been invested, and whether someone wants an end
game sooner.

Stock deals have the potential for larger return in the long run.
I believe in the next year there will be a hgih volume bid war for WISPs in
major markets getting top dollar.
The reason is that, the Hype of Wireless is more valuable to a large
publically traded ISP, in stock holder perception, than the network and
revenue that they are buying.
The average consumer doesn't understand jack about what wireless's capabilty
is, they just know Wireless is the next big thing, and the providers that
own the major markets have the best chance to win in the long run.

I'd also argue that one should demand/negotiate the stock price trade based
on the buyer's value prior to the anouncement of the buyout, so you can sell
your own portion of stock a month down the road, after the stock value
skyrockets. Easilly could increase the profit from sale 20%, provided a
public company buying.

RE: [WISPA] lightning

2006-10-16 Thread Paul Hendry

Hi Brad,

Im curious as to why you chose this
particular model of ferrite and if you run poe through these cables? Did these
resolve a problem you where having with interference on the cat5?

I use the 240-2318-ND (towards the bottom of the page). Just wrap
the Ethernet cable through it as many times as possible. You have to
purchase 100 to get that low, low price I mentioned :-). We are located
in Ohio.

Also, where are the bulk of your subscribers located (city/state)? I
would venture to say that WISP's out west have fewer lightning
related failures than WISP's in the East or South.

I lost 15% of my CPE's one year.It was a dry Summer (I theorize the
earth
was not conducting well), then we had a couple of bad
storms.Usinga
$1.50 inductor on the Ethernet cable near the radios really seems to have
helped a lot.

Lightning is by far the largest threat to our WISP. It would be
  interesting
to know the typical CPE failure rate (due to lightning) experienced
by
  WISP's. I know that we'll replace 10% (+/- 5%) this year due to
 lightning.
We use the $30 Citel brand Cat5 surge protectors on both ends of the
outdoor shielded Cat5 and we also ground the mounting arm to an
approved
earth ground via 10 guage copper wire. I don't believe we've taken
any
direct strikes, mainly blown Ethernet ports on the CPE or AP. IMO,
 owning
a WISP would be a LOT less stressful if wireless gear was not so
prone
 to
  damage caused by lightning.

BTW, if you would like to share your own CPE-lightning-failure-rates
 with
the list, please do so. Same goes for lightning protection tips,
tricks
  and
  wisdom.

Anyone using coaxial surge protection on 50% or more of your CPE
installations? If so, would you say that it is worth the extra $15 -
$20
per install? How do your failure rates with coaxial surge protection
compare with installations where there is none?

Does anyone know anything about DataFlo? According to the press
release it
appears they were bought for 1.4x revenue, which seems awfully cheap.

Covad Communications Group Inc. announced it will acquire the assets
of
DataFlo Communications LLC, a Chicago-based broadband wireless provider,
adding a sixth market to its coverage area.

Covad will acquire substantially all the assets of DataFlo for
approximately $1.4 million in cash. For the full 2006 year, DataFlo
expects to generate approximately $1 million in revenue. In keeping
with Covad's profitability goals, the transaction is EBITDA
accretive. The transaction is expected to close later this month
subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

Covad already offers broadband wireless to Los Angeles, San Diego,
San
Francisco, Orange County and Las Vegas through its wireless subsidiary
NextWeb, which it acquired earlier this year.

Speaking at the Internet Telephony Conference Expo today, Claude
Tolbert, Covad's senior vice president of product solutions planning
and priorities, said the acquisition of NextWeb was primarily in
response to regulatory uncertainty over the company's access to
incumbent broadband networks. With that concern ameliorated, he said,
the DataFlo deal is more of a continuation of an overlay network
strategy.

Broadband wireless allows the company to provide higher-capacity
services. It can offer 100mbps on unlicensed band and 10mbps on
licensed bands - speeds unavailable with DSL. Broadband wireless also
enables Covad to turn up services more quickly, reducing intervals
from 25 days for wireline to 10 days for wireless. It also enables
the company to serve clientele with temporary needs.

Tolbert said the DataFlo network is pre-WiMAX and serves businesses
via a
direct sales force. This distribution strategy, he added, will help
Covad

to balance its predominantly wholesale focus.

Re: [WISPA] lightning

2006-10-16 Thread Jenco Wireless
Hi Paul. I chose this model for an FM tower and the total amount of inductance. They work fine for PoE as well. After using these, I was able to get my Ethernet speed increased from 10 Mbps to 100 on several different devices on this tower, so they definitely worked for that.
