Re: [WISPA] [WISPA - Offlist] OSPF Tutorial/Guide

2013-07-22 Thread Rick Harnish
Jim and Scott,

This type of thing should be taken offlist. Please read the Mailing List
policy below, specifically those highlighted in Yellow.

WISPA Mailing List Policy

1. Always be civil and professional.

2. No rude comments.

3. No Profanity. Profanity is a word, expression, gesture, or other
social behavior which is socially constructed or interpreted as insulting,
rude, vulgar, desecrating, or showing disrespect.

4. No ad hominem personal attacks. Ad hominem abuse usually involves
insulting or belittling one's opponent in order to invalidate their
argument, but can also involve pointing out factual but ostensible character
flaws or actions that are irrelevant to the opponent's argument. This
tactic is logically false because insults and even true negative facts about
the opponent's personal character have nothing to do with the logical merits
of the opponent's arguments or assertions.

5. No selling or self-promotion allowed.

1. In response to a specifically stated need, WISPA Vendor and Principal
Members are allowed to state whether they have a particular product or
service that meets to poster's needs. Subsequent conversations about
purchasing the product or service and/or pricing information should be taken
offlist.

2. WISPA Vendor and Principal Members are encouraged to ask a poster to
contact them off list for additional information.

3. Members and Non-Members in violation of this policy will receive a
$250 No Advertising invoice for each violation. Failure to pay within 10
days will result in permanent subscriber removal from all WISPA lists,
including re-subscriptions using different email addresses.

6. No Partisan Political Discussion. WISPA's policies are not
Democratic or Republican therefore party politicking is prohibited.
Government policy discussion is allowed and considered constructive when
such discussions relate to determining policy and codifying that policy into
law.  As a lobbying organization, WISPA must deal with political realities;
however, WISPA's policies are determined by what is best for all its
members, not by a particular political party, belief, or partisan viewpoint.
Partisan political discussion drives dues-paying Members away by denying
them their right to a constructive, solution-oriented list that addresses
solutions to their real-world business issues. Therefore, partisan political
posts are strictly prohibited.

7. No Religious Commentary. WISPA maintains that every person's
religious beliefs are private and should be respected by others. Our
forums/mailing lists are not the place for discussion of these beliefs.

8. No Racial Slurs or Commentary. WISPA believes that all races and all
cultural groups deserve equal respect.

9. Read and adhere to the http://www.wispa.org/?page_id=3 WISPA Code
of Ethics.

10. Signature lines and files may contain any material. WISPA does not
judge, approve or reject posts based on signature file content unless such
content is profane, abusive, or racist by its very nature.

11. Commercial advertisements of any kind require prior board approval.
(Send requests to mailto:adm...@wispa.org adm...@wispa.org ).

12. Issues regarding operation of the list or problems with list members
are to be directed to mailto:adm...@wispa.org adm...@wispa.org.

13. One-time advertisements may be purchased by Non-Vendor members on
WISPA open mailing lists for $250/ad. Requests should be directed to
mailto:adm...@wispa.org adm...@wispa.org for approval. Non-Vendor Members
do not have access to quarterly ads published to the Advertisements mailing
list nor to ads published to the Members mailing list.

14. WISPA has applied these policies to all WISPA mailing lists to promote
a strong community and to avoid excessive spamming of our mailing list
subscribers. These policies are also adopted to create a polite,
constructive atmosphere and to minimize destructive, confrontational
arguments. These policies are also adopted to create fairness between all
members at the appropriate membership levels.

That is how all ospf costs default based on ether link speed.  In reality it is
a giant math problem, you don't want to assign costs based on the defaults if
you don't have a wired network.

You should actually set costs higher and not use single digits so you have
wiggle room.  You also want to try and eliminate the static routes or atleast
set their metric so high that they are last resort.

Redistributed routes are important as well.  It is a balancing act.

I know that is how Cisco figures default values, but it is not always the best.
I may have a 10M wire link and a 54M wireless link.  The average data flow is
5M, so want the 10M wire to be the primary because it is more reliable.  I
would give it a lower cost than the faster wireless link.

If you have a wireless link that you know suffers from temperature inversion
problems every morning and one that doesn't, but is slower, you may want the
slower, more reliable link to have the lower cost so that your reliability
stays high, but if that link goes down, you still have a link to use.

As with most things in this business, there are general guidelines, but you
also have to know your network and make informed decisions, not just follow
some rule of thumb.

No, it isn't. Mikrotik defaults everything to cost 10, no matter the
medium or speed.
I am pretty sure I have seen other vendors that set everything to a
particular value.

Cisco does default based on medium link speed.

around the down link.

I have a bench setup running based on the Mikrotik Wiki example, it's
running and working, but I'm stuck on the part where I assign
cost/distance/priority or whatever the term is to make it decide one
link over another. I'm not really grasping how that works.

Any suggestions for a tutorial or documentation which explains that,
or if it's simple, maybe just tell me what I need to do?

I want to be able to assign priority to the links so that it won't
always take the least # of hops path, we have a redundant link
between two main towers which is an old nanobridge link and want to
reserve it as the backup link.

Thanks for any advise!

Cost should be set based on the speed of the link. So, if you have a 1
Gbps link in your network, set the cost of routers on either side to 1. If
you have a 333 Mbps link, set the cost of the routers on either side to 3.
100 Mbps link? Cost = 10. So, your 1 Gbps link speed is really 1000 Mbps
so cost = 1000 / Speed.

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA - Offlist] OSPF Tutorial/Guide

2013-07-20 Thread Scott Reed
I know that is how Cisco figures default values, but it is not always
the best. I may have a 10M wire link and a 54M wireless link. The
average data flow is 5M, so want the 10M wire to be the primary because
it is more reliable. I would give it a lower cost than the faster
wireless link.

If you have a wireless link that you know suffers from temperature
inversion problems every morning and one that doesn't, but is slower,
you may want the slower, more reliable link to have the lower cost so
that your reliability stays high, but if that link goes down, you still
have a link to use.

As with most things in this business, there are general guidelines, but
you also have to know your network and make informed decisions, not just
follow some rule of thumb.

I agree with Josh's comment. Butch has been the first and last MikroTik
consultant we've needed.

Best,

I second Butch as a personal recommendation. We haven't had to use him
much, but he has always had great recommendations for questions I have
asked on the list as well as questions I wanted to ask and someone
else beat me to it.

Also, his QOS script for RouterOS is pretty good as well!

Life isn't fair. My example goes both ways. No one is forcing you to

Maybe we should have a poll with all the paying members and see who
all has a problem with it? Base rules on the decisions of the group.

Are we really going to make a rule that says non-members can't offer help?

I was under the assumption that in order to advertise services on the lists one
needed to be a paying vendor member.

Doesn't seem fair that if one guy is paying for the right to advertise, that
another guy can pop in and tout his stuff fwithout paying the fare (nothing
against Butch, I'm just sayin')

2010-07-29 Thread Forbes Mercy
Josh,

Sorry but that email was out of line, why would you take the we'll take
our Butch fans and leave attitude? it's totally against what we have
all worked for in improving conditions for WISP's and access to our paid
vendors. The first thing Dennis did was go on the Board list and
announce it was his opinion and not as the board member and he would
abstain from any board action if any was taken. I'm always irritated
when people make grand stands over something when they know it's not
really right. Yes I'm a fan of Butch's, I don't doubt for one second
his qualifications, I'm also a fan of the rules that apply to everyone
and if someone was a board member years ago but didn't support WISPA in
the capacity they were representing now that is as violating to me as
someone saying something bad about Butch. We have numerous camps in
this group because people contribute a lot on here, I even say that you
have been active enough to have a Josh camp of supporters. It shows a
lack of that leadership expected of your followers to say if this group
wants to play by the rules we all signed up for, we're outta here. If
Butch has made at least $1000 in revenue while promoting his business on
here, which I'm sure he has, shouldn't you be asking why do I have to
pay my share and he doesn't? I'm just asking.

The Regional Meeting provided great unity so when someone just
willy-nilly says I speak for many of us blah blah lets fly this
rules following group if they disagree with me at all! I ask do you even
get WISPA? It's just sad because this group has made me plenty mad on
occasion but I can easily see how WISPA has assisted my business and the
entire industry. How many customers have said I'm leaving you and
taking my friends with me, I lose maybe one or two people because of
them but eventually they come back because my service is far better than
my satellite competition, see the correlation.

Re: [WISPA] OFFLIST: Re: Mikrotik User Meeting

2010-07-29 Thread Josh Luthman
It has little to do with Butch specifically. It's the fact we have an
entire thread dedicated to this, what I consider, tiny little issue.

I will stand alone in this. I was only imagining that I wasn't alone,
I apologize for speaking for others. I ask that everyone think for
themselves. What you (Forbes and Dennis in this particular thread,
I'm assuming others are part of this group) are stating is that no one
can say I can help.

We can either

A) learn to work together
B) clearly define the rules; I believe this is impossible
C) separate WISPA from the public; members only are in
memb...@wispa.org; close down every other mailing list

I have always been of a GNU mind set. I help people for free. People
help me for free. Obviously there has to be a line drawn. Maybe
another way we can look at this is Butch is helping the WISP community
and by proxy the WISPA entity. I think helping starving people is
more important then worrying about who has the bigger slice of pizza.

I understand completely what you're saying. It isn't fair one is
paying for what the other isn't and getting the same results. Neither
is life. We can pout or cooperate. Not sure if you were around for
this but look up I QUIT.

I was under the assumption that in order to advertise services
on the lists one needed to be a paying vendor member.

FIRST: I did not advertise my services. I simply answered a question
that was asked. Anyone who reads the original question and my answer
will see that my answer was much more than an advertisement.

SECOND: I agree with the presumption that advertisements should be
paid for. The fact is, though, that is has LONG been an accepted
practice to answer questions and offer solutions. I had a solution to
the question, which I posted. In context, the alleged advertisement
was a small portion of the answer. My record of offering free advice on
this (and MANY other lists) will support my contention that I do NOT use
every opportunity to advertise. I provide good advice (for free),
complete answers where possible and occasionally (VERY RARE) I post a
solution that will require a payment.

THIRD: Can we please just drop this? I inadvertently posted this
response on the list and it was meant to be offlist (see the subject).
It should be clear to all who read my message (whether you are a Butch
fan or a Dennis and Jim fan) that the current discussion was not
intended to be a public discussion.

FINALLY: This thread has seriously deteriorated into something that is
of no help to Paul, who posted a reasonable question. I will no longer
participate in this thread.

Atleast not in 2.4G, that have so many vendor options, new and used.

 Anyone who has Tranzeo CPQ15, CPQ19, SL2-15, SL2N, SL5 or TR5a radios
for sale, please contact me. We are switching to 10mhz channels and I
have about 500 or so of the older CPE200 and CPE80 radios to switch out.

I've been buying a lot of NS2/NS5 and Bullet2/Bullet5, but it is a lot
easier to switch to a Tranzeo when the customer already has a Tranzeo,
and there are quite a few situations where a Tranzeo works better than a
 Ubiquiti radio.

Hi All,

I am giving a look to some email server in-house applications. One is
atmail (atmail.com) which is a rebranded-zimbra (or it looks to be
similar).

They have an ISP license, so I was thinking that maybe you can tell me
your success/horror stories with in-house products.

At the moment I am not thinking of hosted services, so the in-house
looks the only solution.

Suggestions are very welcome ;)

I F-bombed a guy once on isp-wireless and thought it was offlist.
Fortunately those people have moved on and there are no more witnesses
except for maybe Shriv or Marlon or Larsen

So I know the feeling REAL WELL. I was surprised at the amount of
offlist messages I got after that saying things like too funny and
way to go.

2009-03-10 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
For what it's worth to anyone, Jerry was a HUGE help. I'd have NEVER figured
out what went wrong with my installation and I'd still be trying to figure out
why what I was supposed to see isn't what I was seeing.

We got far enough to create a map that looked pretty reasonable.

In a couple of hours Jerry had me doing what most people say took them all day
or more!

Thanks again Jerry!

laters,
marlon

I would guess the average WISP is 1000-2000 subscribers strong. Mesa

Subject: [WISPA] Input Needed - Average number of CPE per WISP ?

 Guys and Gals,

To help prepare for a planned FCC trip, I would appreciate your input on
 the following question.

In your opinion, what is the average number of CPEs deployed per
 independent WISP?

I'm not looking for the number of CPEs that YOU have deployed unless you
believe that your number is exactly the average of all independent
WISPs. I'm looking for the number that you believe the average
independent WISP has deployed. By independent WISP I'm not referring
to large national carriers, I'm referring to the typical type of WISP
operation that you are familiar with.

I figure if I can get 30 responses then I'll have good data. I don't
want to flood the lists with 500 responses so after about 25 or 30
replies, I should have all the data I need. I guess what I'm saying is
that the time to live for this thread may be as short as 8 hours.

Thanks in advance for your help.

 Respectfully,

 jack (WISPA FCC Committee Chair)

others in a bad situation when I wrote a couple
one-handed comments.

I'm sorry for my piss-poor attitude from a couple of bad days in a row bleeding

I meant the first statement to be taken as a figure of speechc but the second

Sascha,

Although I agree with you, Bell South's actions do not condone the action

of the city.

New Orleans could easilly instead announce a grant offer or loan program

for small business ISPs, to rebuild New Orlean's

communications systems.

They could understand the problem with having only a monopoly providing

most of the services. And they could fix that problem from

the start, empowering the vast amount of talent the industry has to offer,

to accellerate the launch of a network. Instead they get

their network designed by a Manufacturer. The mayor should be helping the

peiople rebuild their homes and neighborhoods, and let

How about giving the grant money to New Orlean local businesses? It may

add one or two more local jobs.

And with bell having to rebuild their whole infrastructure here in New
Orleans its a bigger slap in the face IMO. The hotel owners are pretty
upset
with this as well. Ya, the City has really ruffled some feathers over
this
move.

Regardless of whether or not the City of New Orleans government needs a
spanking ;) -- I have a fairly different take on this matter, one less
focused on the specifics of the New Orleans/BellSouth fiasco and more
oriented toward BellSouth's general business strategy. BellSouth is
clearly attempting to leverage it's market dominance in one area

(wireline

communications) to prevent competition in a different realm (in this

case,

wireless networking). This is exactly the type of dynamic that

anti-trust

laws were intended to keep in check.

BellSouth's actions in New Orleans are just the most recent

manifestation

of a strategy that _will_ be utilized against folks like us (e.g.,
independent ISPs). BellSouth has systematically attempted to prevent any
sort of competition within their service areas -- their New Orleans
tantrum is only the latest example. I wrote up a brief piece about some
of their most recent actions here:

http://www.saschameinrath.com/2005dec04bellsouths_shame

I'm sure there are numerous ways in which the City of New Orleans needs
reforming -- but BellSouth's actions are targeted against any and all
competitive entities -- they will certainly focus on WISPA members down
the road. Instead of blaming New Orleans for what is obviously a
widespread business strategy, I'd recommend focusing on BellSouth, who
clearly isn't interested in playing well with others and has a
well-documented history of using its market power to bully others.

John / WISPA... Wow, did I not even take into consideration the feelings
of others in a bad situation when I wrote a couple
one-handed comments.

I'm sorry for my piss-poor attitude from a couple of bad days in a row
bleeding over into my public statements here...

I meant the first statement to be taken as a figure of speechc but the
second was completely uncalled for, and for making it and
offending the list I'm sorry.

I had a long day. This was intended to genuinely be off list. The truth
is though that I do feel Rick owes this list an apology. I was hoping to
not make the request for such public though. For that I am sorry to Rick
and this list for making this a public issue for discussion. I still
hope we see an apology from Rick.
