While a change would not break anything, it will introduce  a change

require documentation and user education. Users would need to learn to
tab out of the DXCall input field in order for their connected
applications (like JTAlert) to detect the Callsign change and proceed
with log lookups, xml queries, etc. I can see a significant increase in
user complaint and support messages if this behavior was introduced.

In my opinion is far better for a developer to introduce a timeout check

than having the behavior change requiring many users to learn of the
change and alter their operating behavior.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Possible issue with ECHO mode - 2.6.0

2023-02-22 Thread K9RX via wsjt-devel
Understood Joe. I understand that it should have been set at “none” as it is
not a wide doppler shift. I was only commenting on how the program action
changed – w/o any changes made to the program/setup, with the default setting
(“own echo”)…

but we’re good – I have it (properly) set to “none”.

I'll repeat what I said before. I believe if you configure WSJT-X as
described in the User Guide and the referenced paper, its behavior will
be as it should be.

You have not said if you are using CAT control. If YES, and you choose
"Own Echo", you'll see your dial frequency change from Rx to Tx. On 6m,
Doppler shifts are small enough that you don't need to use CAT control.
In that case WSJT-X will do Echo-mode Doppler control in software, at
audio frequencies.

In either case, the echo peak in the Echo graph should be centered at 0.
SNR measurements are made only for a peak centered at 0. The "-99 dB"
you are seeing means that there is no peak centered at 0, and this means
something is not being done correctly.

This is all clear in the screen shot if anyone wants to see it.

After reading the doc I did see that it was set to “on own echo”. I
changed that to “none” and now it seems to work as expected – the echo

and it gave a proper numeric value (this time -20.3).

So again – its that it changed and when it changed it was no longer
functional as, even though the echo was clearly there, the value for SNR
was ‘stuck’ at -99.9.

Hi Gary,

I have not followed the ECHO mode documentation, but it may be that on
the Wide

Graph, you see the trace coming back as doppler shifed, but (at least in
previous

versions) the ECHO mode moves the frequency around, along with its
receiver, and just

displays the sum total of the average echoes received. The program knows

Set up Echo mode as described in the paper referenced above. Be sure to
check Doppler tracking on the Astronomical Data window, and select "Own
Echo" for Doppler Tracking mode. Your echo should always be centered at
frequency offset 0. SNR values are accurate and reliable.

(-99.0 shown). You can see the echo on the wide graph – you can see the echo on
the echo graph – but both have it lower than it should be…

A few minutes earlier I had 2 echos at -14.6 and others in to the low 20’s –
these were all showing on the spreadsheet – and “properly” on both the wide and
echo graphs.

Hi Gary

Have a look at these, which will hopefully help.

[wsjt-devel] Possible issue with ECHO mode - 2.6.0

2023-02-22 Thread K9RX via wsjt-devel
I like to use ECHO to test the station on 6M EME.

But the latest version has changed enough I was wondering if there was a short
help file for it?

Also: The Echo graph will at times show the echo centered – and other times
show it offset. I have a jpg showing a recent echo run where the echo was very
strong – and it was showing it as the right numeric doppler shift, 96 Hz, but
it was showing it on the graph as -96Hz and there was no SNR value reported
(-99.0 shown). You can see the echo on the wide graph – you can see the echo on
the echo graph – but both have it lower than it should be…

A few minutes earlier I had 2 echos at -14.6 and others in to the low 20’s –
these were all showing on the spreadsheet – and “properly” on both the wide and
echo graphs.
