Re: [XFree86] Xfree86

2003-10-29 Thread Jesse Hutton
You should really upgrade your kernel as well. 2.4.2 has a lot of security
issues and plain bugs that have since been resolved (not to mention that
the VM issues weren't straightened out until about 2.4.15). I'm sure there
is even an RPM package that you could download and install a new kernel
with, if you aren't up for compiling from scratch.

But, Red Hat 7.1 might not even be officially supported anymore (IIRC), so
your best bet is probably to install Redhat 9. You'd also get XFree86 4.3
out of the deal.

Difficile a dire sans avoir vu le fichier /var/log/xfree86.0.log, mais
probablement, il faut simplement configurer le serveur X. "XFree86
-configure" devrait suffir. (Si ca ne marche pas, montre-nous
xfree86.0.log)

You need to configure the X server. The easiest way may be to use a
distribution specific configuration utility, if one is available for your
distro. If not, try 'xf86config'.

Hi,
You probably just need to make sure you have Unix domain sockets support
in the kernel. It's in the Networking section. Specificially, the .config
file in your /kernel/source_dir/ should have this line:

CONFIG_UNIX=y

An easy way to fix this is probably to upgrade to Xfree86 v4.3.
I don't know if v4.2 supports the 9000 Pro (the driver support page for
ATI on xfree86.org is a bit cryptic), but I've heard that on 4.3 it works
well.

Re: [XFree86] How to switch from small char to big char to all X applications ?

2003-09-28 Thread Jesse Hutton
Hi,

I think that there should be a way for you to configure all of the fonts
to your desired size in KDE if you have xft support for mozilla and the
other apps (I don't know about xine, but that shouldn't be a bid deal).

I use gnome, and it's very easy to configure all the application fonts to be
uniform; it's just Applications -> Desktop Preferences -> Font, and you
can set the type and size for "Applications font," "Desktop font," "Window
title font," and "Terminal font." You can even set different rendering
specifications from this config dialogue.

Because you're configuring the fonts in your desktop session, it follows
that each user can have their own font configurations. You should be able
to configure mozilla's web rendering fonts based on user session as well.

What does 'lspci' say? The xserver can't tell what your video chipset is,
so it might not be supported. Check www.xfree86.org to see if your card is

Re: [XFree86] Problem report - Mandrake 9.1 on Dell Optiplex GX270with Flat Screen 1504FP

2003-08-06 Thread Jesse Hutton
Some drivers have a problem with detecting a LCD monitor, which looks to
be the case from the log. You might try adding this line in the "Device"
section for your video card config of /etc/X11/XFree86-4:

Option "FlatPanel" "1"

It's supposed to word for NVIDIA chips, anyway...

Re: [XFree86] Undefined reference to .L91

2003-07-25 Thread Jesse Hutton
Wahib,

I just did a little googling and found a reference to a similar problem.
It's from an old archive and the undefined reference is different, but
it might be helpful:

http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/glib-linux-archive/9801/0022.html

So try making sure that libXaw.so is pointing to the right file on your
system.

libglx.so is being loaded, but it is a lib from the NVIDIA driver. I
believe that if you rename (or remove) libglx.so--so that it's unfindable
by the xserver--it will see the version that comes with XFree86 and the
nv driver should work.

Try inserting this line in your "Module" section of the config file:

Load "ddc"

Just out of curiosity, what kernel, distro, and version of XFree86 are
you using? Have you tried Ati's binary driver to see if that works (if
they provide one)?

You need to send a few things to this list:

1) Your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file
2) config file -- /etc/X11/XF86Config
3) output from lspci (just for completeness)

plain text format please

Hi,

Add these lines to the Section "Files" part of your /etc/X11/XF86Config
file (the listing for unix/:7100):

FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
(you may want these also)
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"

and/or restart xfs, your font server (adding the lines above is a fail
proof way of dealing with the problem).

2003-07-22 Thread Jesse Hutton
Hi,

Try using Driver "s3virge" in the Device section for your video card.
Then remove Device "Accel" from the screen section.

Re: [XFree86] Re: XFree86 on IBM RS/6000 B50 with Matrox G200

2003-07-22 Thread Jesse Hutton
I don't suppose that the Matrox mga drivers run on those boxes,
because they just release new ones for version 4.3...There has also been
some work done on the Matrox framebuffer in the 2.5 series. If that's
not a production box, you might give that a try (I'm running 2.6.0-test1
on my desktop with zero problems...not to mention the fact that it's a
much nicer user experience :o), or maybe there exist some patches for
2.4.x.

Have you tried Driver "ati"? This card is supposed to be supported in
XFree 4.3, but I can't read any of the files you attached to find out
what you're running, because they are not in plain text format (but, I'm
sure someone else can).

I believe X creates a virtual screen when you don't list your highest
resolutions first. Just make sure your resolutions are going from highest
to lowest, and delete all those up until your preferred one is first in
the list.

This is a know issue with Radeon video cards and Mozilla. Check their bug
database, you'll likely find an old report for this. The folks at
Mozilla, however, consider this a problem with the Radeon driver. I don't
know the specifics, but I think one solution might be to disable dri.

gft is just a modeline generator that is included with the XFree86 (not
sure if it is included in all versions, however). You can find other
programs that do the same thing (videogen, for example).

I noticed in your first message in the log file that there was a warning
for MTRR support. Check to see if your config file (/boot/Config-xx in
debain) has CONFIG_MTRR=y. If it doesn't, try compiling that into the
kernel. It might make a difference.

I think it means that these modes are not built into the xserver. Try
generating a custom modeline with the resolutions you're aiming for (or
something smaller with the same aspect ratio if you can't go that high)
and inserting that into the monitor section of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
Videogen is one example of a tool for making modelines.

If you get something that almost works (but there is some distortion in
the screen or something), then use xvidtune to adjust the screen and
fine tune the mode (don't forget to print out the corrected modeline
created by xvidtune and using that to replace the one you had generated
earlier).

Re: [XFree86] newbie - X11 3.3.4 with Intel 810 card

2003-03-28 Thread Jesse Hutton
You should really upgrade. Not only will you be happier with a newer
version of XF86, you'll get a whole bunch of other new an improved
software items if you download a new distro (like Mozilla 1.3, gnome2.2,
KDE3.1, etc).

[XFree86] Modeline generators

2003-03-27 Thread Jesse Hutton
Does anyone know of a good modeline generator? I have a Viewsonic P95f
monitor (video bandwidth of 285Mhz), and I would like to see how it looks
with a refresh rate of about 100 (and my video card is a Matrox G550) at
1280x960 resolution.

I've tried numerous calculators on the web, and none of them have given
me good modelines. What would result each time is a compressed screen
image that is displaced far to the right (and which I can't even get
to cover the screen) that sometimes had an extra bright band on the
right edge of the image running vertically.

The best one I've found so far is videogen. It has allowed me to get a
refresh rate of 89 (85 is hightest with default modes, for me), which is
not bad at all. But, it doesn't let me specify what Vert refresh rate I
want, and thus 89 is the highest I can get. I just feel like pushing my
hardware as hard as I can to see what it can do, I guess.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Jesse

you need to start your font server (xfs) or put (at least the first
of) these lines in your XF86Config-4 in the "Files" section:

FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscaled"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"

Re: [XFree86] SUN OEM monitor GDM 5010PT with Radeon 7500 video card

2003-03-25 Thread Jesse Hutton
Try just setting the lowerbound Vert Refresh value to the rate that you
want. With the default mode lines, you may not be able to go very high
at 1600x1200. For example, my Xserver crashes if I set the refresh above
85Hz (albiet at a lower resolution than your running). If you don't get
anything satisfactory it may be necessary to generate a new mode line..

Re: [XFree86] XWindows Crash

2003-03-24 Thread Jesse Hutton
I can't answer why it's happening, but I've thought that it would be a
good idea to establish some kind of semi-comprehensive FAQ on basic
problems such as this one, and then to point users to this faq (presumably
on xfree86.org) as a preliminary measure in their crash messages. The
crash message should tell them that if it can't be resolved quickly that
way, then they should mail this list. That would probably kill all
these 'fixed font' errors. As far as I know, however, the FAQ
that was on xfree86.org was taken down, and there is no official
substitute as of yet.

Everything you need is in the error message below. Try commenting out
line 102 of your config file (the one with the word Mets, assuming it is
in fact an error in the file, and not some important config option). If
that doesn't work, try generating a new config file with the redhat
xfree86 utility (forgot what it's called...).

Re: [XFree86] X Fonts

2003-03-20 Thread Jesse Hutton
Matt,

This was copied from Branden Robinson's xfree86 FAQ (slightly edited to
make it less confusing for a non debian user) found here (I noticed that
the one on xfree86.org has been taken down, unfortunately, because this
question is asked all the time):

http://people.debian.org/~branden/xsf/FAQ

*) How do I get the X server to find the "fixed" font?

If the X server refuses to start, complaining that it cannot find the
"fixed" font, then one (or more) of the following is likely true:

+ You don't have a valid FontPath in your /etc/X11/XF86Config or
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. At the very minimum, your FontPath should
look something like this:

FontPath
"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"

You will likely have several more directories listed. The "fixed"
font
is in the "misc" directory.

  + The fonts.dir or fonts.alias files in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc
directory
have been corrupted or are not present. This could be caused by a
broken package which unpacks one or both of these files onto the
system. A reinstallation of xfonts-base should fix the problem.

+ You're using a font server (either local or remote), and it is not
running or not reachable.

Note that Debian ships the xfs package with TCP listening turned off
by
default for security reasons. If you are running xfs locally and do
not need to serve fonts to remote machines, you don't need to turn TCP
listening back on. Instead, try a FontPath entry like this:

FontPath "unix/:7100"

If you are using a remote font server, determine whether or not it is
running, is listening on the TCP port, and/or engage in some network
troubleshooting.

Re: [XFree86] Blurry Monitor

I was using a similar card, and was also unhappy with the 2D graphics. I
don't quite know what to tell you. I've since bought a Matrox G550, which
has vastly improved the situation for me. I've heard that NVIDIA's linux
drivers are improving, however, so I'd suggest you give that a try since
they don't release the specs on their hardware anyways. It might be that
the XFREE86 driver is a little buggy, and trying the proprietary drivers
might show some difference (I use Matrox's drivers, and I'm happy). Also,
having a refresh rate of 80 or 85 should make some difference, of course.

Re: [XFree86] "Permission denied"

2003-03-09 Thread Jesse Hutton
What do you mean "when I try to get into..."? As root it's sort of
impossible that you couldn't do 'less /etc/X11/XF86Config' or 'vi
/etc/X11...'. You may be dealing with the limitation that many Xservers
are configured to reject connections from the root user. If you need to
run an X app as root, try 'export XAUTHORITY=/home//.Xauthority' first, for example. The default configuration is that
way for security reasons (but remember that it doesn't stop you from using
any command line utilites from an X terminal as root--just programs that
access X resources).

In order to help you set up X correctly we need to see your XF86Config
and XF86free.0.log files in plain text format, as well as know what
graphics card you are using.

Re: [XFree86] problem plz reply soon

Some distros make it so that the super user cannot access the Xserver.
In such a case, trying to start up any application in X as root will give
you this error:

There are a number of ways to get around this. Try exporting
XAUTHORITY=/.Xauthority as root before executing
xhost, for example.

What video card are you using? What driver are you trying to install?
If your using a stock kernel, you probably have an NTFS module available,
and if 'mount -t ntfs /dev/ /' doesn't load
it automatically, you can try loading it with modprobe.

Re: [XFree86] Speedo and the Radeon 7000

2003-03-04 Thread Jesse Hutton
I don't make the Speedo fonts available to X and I have no problems.

It sounds like you're having trouble loading the Speedo module for some
reason (I have no idea why a hardware upgrade would cause that, except
for the fact that you may be using a new driver), which is used for
serving up Speedo fonts to the X server. Try commenting it out in the
"Module" section of your XF86Config-4 file if you don't mind not using
these fonts, and you may as well comment out the speedo fontpath if you
do that. Otherwise, you'll have to figure out why this modules isn't
loading properly.

[XFree86] Font server question

2003-03-02 Thread Jesse Hutton
Hi,

I've been doing some research and experimenting a little bit with
different configurations lately in an effort to try to get these fonts in
X under control. In the process I've made a relatively surprising
discovery, namely that fonts look better if they are served up in xfree86
than if I configure xfs to exclusively handle fonts.

My test scenario consists of enabling only these fontpaths in XF86Config-4
and commenting out the local font servers unix/:7100 and unix/:7110 (I'm
using XFree86-4.2.1-6 from debian unstable, btw):

FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscalled"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"

Then I tried using xfs with the same fontpaths, while commenting out these
in XF86Config-4. On my system, these fonts look *remarkably* better when
I don't use xfs--that is when I just whatever font server is internal to
xfree86. Is there anyone that can explain why this is so?

Another thing I noticed is that the fonts in Mozilla, my test application
of choice, get uglier when I uncomment these two lines in XF86Config-4.

#FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
#FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"

I've tried allowing xfs-xtt to serve up my TrueType and CID directories
as well, but I get the same result--uglier fonts in Mozilla. Is this just
because those unscaled fonts in /misc, /75dpi, and /100dpi are cleaner
under X, and when X is forced to use them only, everything looks good?
I'm pretty confused.

Just for completeness, I'm running Gnome2.2 while doing all this, and my
font config section at the moment is this:

Section "Files"
# FontPath"unix/:7110"# local font
server
# FontPath"unix/:7100"
# if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these
# FontPath"/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"
# FontPath"/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscalled"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
# FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
# FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
# FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
# FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
# FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
EndSection

And this gives me the best results I've been able to achieve so far. But,
I thought using xfs was a *good* thing to do, and that truetype fonts made
things prettier...Does not using xfs hurt performance much in X? Font
gurus, please help.

Re: [XFree86] Top 10 list of Most Linux Friendly Video Card Vendors?

2003-02-28 Thread Jesse Hutton
I bought a G550 because it has great 2D, moderate 3D (nothing that would
please a serious gamer, however), and great performance under Linux. In
fact, they used to be know as "the best graphics solutions available for
Linux", but support for brands has since come along, as well.

I would also consider buying an ATI card, but not one of the newly
released ones, as you're likely to have some trouble with them under
Linux.

Re: [XFree86] ddcprobe still a problem

2003-02-19 Thread Jesse Hutton
Well, perhaps there are some things that 40 billion dollars can buy...

There is also the fact that every PC hardware maker builds stuff
specifically to work with Microsoft software (such that it is probably no
work at all for Microsoft to add support for a new graphics card to
Windows--the card maker does all the hard work, such as writing drivers),
and that many won't even release the specs of their hardware to the open
source community.

Remember that these people are doing great work and giving it to you for
free.

Then there is always the possibility that it is your own competence at
issue. See (found by searching www.google.com/linux -- it's a great
resource):

http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=5656
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=5676

It's a Debian specific installation guide for this laptop, but you should
be able to take the relavent parts on the configuration of XFree86
(which is version 4.1 in the article, so it will surely work in whatever
newer version your running unless your problems are caused by bleeding
edge bugs) in order to get your system working.

RE: [XFree86] XFConfig requirements for kbd and mouse

2003-02-07 Thread Jesse Hutton
To get from a terminal to X, it's usually Alt-F7 (ttys 1-6 are commonly
getty login instances). Also there is a program called 'su' which allows
you to become the root user.

You should check out debian's install documentation from their website.
It will help you get accustomed to the basics of the system. Debian
offers a ton of great documentation, on the web, and which you can
download as .deb packages (use dselect, and go to the Optional/docs
section).

You have to make sure that the right modules are loaded in the kernel in
order to use usb devices. So, if you boot with the PS/2 mouse, you might
have to load the modules by hand in order for it to work, otherwise they
should load automatically (I'm assuming you're running the stock kernel).

Glad to hear it. You can probably use that optical mouse as well (I have
a Logitech optical, which works great), but you just have to change
/dev/psaux back to /dev/input/mice.

RE: [XFree86] XFConfig requirements for kbd and mouse

2003-02-07 Thread Jesse Hutton
Is your mouse a usb device? If not, perhaps try /dev/psaux instead of
/dev/input/mice.

You should try dpkg-reconfigure too. It may give you configure options
for the keyboard that you haven't though of yet. Once you have a
XF86Config-4 that works, then edit it by hand for whatever tuning and
adjustments you want.

You can use dpkg-reconfigure to change between gdm, kdm, and xdm, as
well, by just putting one of them as the object of the command (I couldn't
figure out earlier if you wanted to change login managers, or simply
disable them entirely).

If that doesn't work, have you posted your XF86Config-4 file yet? And it
is only the keyboard and mouse that are causing you problems?

Re: [XFree86] XFConfig requirements for kbd and mouse

2003-02-07 Thread Jesse Hutton
Here is my keyboard and mouse sections of my SF86Config-4. It's a pretty
generic configuration, so may help you a little:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device""/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

For Debian, you can do (as root) 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86', and
that will give you a nice configuration program. From there it shouldn't
be hard to get a working system. One of those XkbModels that you tried
should have worked (maybe try pc101?). Now, you probably won't get every
single key on that thing to work, since many are Microsoft specific
command shortcuts, but you should easily be able to get normal
functionality.

Another thing, if you are going to be using dpkg-reconfig to configure X,
choose the least advanced level for the config questions they ask you.
You will probably still need to know the horizontal and vertical refresh
rates of your monitor, but it will automatically choose sensible options
for a lot of other stuff.

Re: [XFree86] Intel 845 and Cursor color

2003-02-04 Thread Jesse Hutton
I don't use 4.2.99 yet, but I believe if you export XCURSOR_THEME=default,
that should do the trick. There have been a lot of questions about this
one, lately. If you want to know more, search the archives for a message
by a Mr. Kurt Wall with the subject line as "how do I set that red cursor
back to something normal?" where he explains a lot of environment
variables that affect the pointer.

Re: [XFree86] what's up, dock?

2003-01-23 Thread Jesse Hutton
This sounds similar to the problem I had when I started using Matrox's
drivers for XFree86 (big, square inch pointer), and it was solved by
specifying in the video card device section:

Option "hw cursor" "off"

I'm not sure if that's what's going on here, though, because I don't
understand why it would resolve itself by undocking the laptop.

Re: [XFree86] X with TV as Monitor

2003-01-18 Thread Jesse Hutton
The install and setup program uses a framebuffer device for the GUI, and
it looks like that is what your XF86Config file is set up for. I would
check to make sure you have an appropriate vga=xxx entry in your
/etc/lilo.conf file, and consult

http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/Framebuffer-HOWTO.html#toc5

if you need any additional help getting the framebuffer working. You need
to have the correct modules compiled for your kernel (which I'm sure you
do, since they were used during install, but maybe there is still some
configuration to be done, like I mentioned above) or support compiled in
statically. Test the setup with the lower resolutions just to make sure
your configuration works and then raise it to whatever is acceptable for
the display.

Re: [XFree86] [XFree86(TM) Bug Report] mga: G550 is producing anincorrect mode

2003-01-16 Thread Jesse Hutton
I sent that message. If I remember correctly, 1280x960 and 1600x1200
worked for me with the standard Debian drivers from unstable. I was
thinking that it might have something to do with the pixel ratio. The
ones that work are all in the 4/3 ratio, but 1280x1024 is something else.
Actually, I remember trying 1440x1080 (which is also 4/3) and that didn't
work either...But 1600x1200 _did_ work, so it's not just resolutions that
are higher than 1280x1024.

Re: [XFree86] URGENT: Settings for Nvidia Riva TNT2 M 64

2003-01-15 Thread Jesse Hutton
Under Debian there is a program for configuring XF86Config-4 called
dpkg-reconfigure. It can be used to configure lots of Debian packages.
Just type "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and you should have not
problem getting a working xserver up.

[XFree86] Compressed image at edges

2003-01-15 Thread Jesse Hutton
Hi, I'm new to this list, so forgive me if this has been asked and
answered before. I'm running Debian unstable with a Matrox G550 video
card with the Matrox beta drivers, and I've noticed that the the screen
image is slightly compressed laterally in about a 1 inch section on both
the extreme right and left edges of the monitor. You can test this by
taking an icon or small image that is perfectly round in the center of
the screen and dragging it over to the edge, where it starts to look like
it's being compressed horizontally so that is looks very slightly like
and oval shape that is longer vertically. I remember noticing this
before with other distros and configurations, as well. If it makes a
difference, my screen resolution is 1280x960 and my monitor is a 19"
Viewsonic P95f+B. Since I finally got some good graphics hardware that
works well under Linux, I wanted to see if anything can be done about
this.

Any suggestions? Info? Similar experiences?

Thanks in advance,

Jesse
