Indeed, this doesn't show any real problem, sounds rather like a problem
on the client side.
PS: Please try Daniel Stone's 4.2.99.x debs and see if they also have
the switching back to X problem.
I will.

Daniel's packages dont have this problem.

I can use Kevin's workaround now, I'm fine.

Plz, how do I properly build radeon.o from his source package? ATM I use

Moreover, suspend works now even without going to console first! GREAT!

Well, I have to re-plug the net cable, somehow ifplugd dies after
suspend, but that's a minor worry.

Thanks a lot! I'm way ahead of knoppix now! (pls still explain me how to
build the drm source module, why doesnt it compile?)

not APM, switching back to X from console! If this works I'm fine.

OK, I am beginning to understand the whole concept of XFree. What you
mean is to come back to 2.4.1, remove old xlibmesa3 2.4.1 and
install only xlibmesa-gl1-dri-trunk.

what is xlibmesa-gl1-trunk BTW? Is it in CVS version? I just compiled it

Sounds like big cleaning ;)

Hi,

Following Kevin's comments, I compiled hi-res fb out of the kernel
(section: console drivers) and now the display is back after Fn+F3 or
suspend but ONLY without X running.

So I have to quit X, suspend, wake up, startx. Not bad, but could be
better. Half-done.

I cant use your key combination trick, Kevin, because I cant go back
from console to suspended X sesion. Or I dont know how to do it (I press
alt+ctrl+F2 to go to console, alt+f1-f5 switch consoles, and alt+F7,
which is supposed to bring me back to X, hangs all the display and I
dont see nothing anymore.

Would someone please suggest some solution?

thanks

Switch to a character display (CTRL-ALT-F2)
Turn off the display (usually Fn-F3 on ThinkPads)
 Turn display on (Any key)
Switch back to X (Alt-F9 on FreeBSD, maybe something else on your OS)

Hi,
Thanks a lot, but it doesnt work :( If I press fn+F3 I cannot get the
display back even without suspending. So it is suspending that doesnt
work, this is the display. After suspend I hear the 3 beeps meaning, the
machine is back. So the problem is the display.

2003-02-20 Thread Dominik Szczerba
Hi,

The problem is precisely defined now: IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH APM NOR
SUSPEND. I turned suspend off in the BIOS, now re-opening the LCD brings
the display back (but no sleep mode of course :( ). BUT FN+F3 alone
kills the display, it goes completely black, then, after pressing a key
the backlit lamp starts, but the display doesnt come back. THE LAPTOP IS
ALIVE, I type in blindly reboot and it works, shutting down all
services and rebooting. I checked the same fn+F3 procedure with suspend
on in the bios - the same, no difference, the laptop is alive, but no
display.

Please, any ideas where to troubleshoot?

that could at least explain why it was working on relatively old knoppix

If you're still using my packages, have you read
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk/README.Debian ?

yes, right, xdm authorize works :)

APM still hangs my laptop (display doesnt come back)

Keep in mind though that my packages are bleeding edge DRI CVS
snapshots, you may prefer to use Daniel Stone's 4.2.99.x packages.

1) Why?

2) Can I safely uninstall your packages?

3) Why at all? Both knoppix and exactly the same laoptop of my coleague
are working without installing latest XFree?

Maybe I am just doing some simple error?

I checked everything, /boot/config, tried 5 different kernel versions...
_sigh_

Not sure. First of all, are you sure you haven't mixed up the 'frames in
5 seconds' and FPS values? I ask because it's an easy mistake, and 1200

no no, 1.2 kfps, 6kf/5s

components because the use of interrupts decreases CPU usage (set
RADEON_NO_IRQS=1 to test this).

if I do this I get: 295 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.000 FPS

  * how up to date radeon_dri.so is (the newer the better)

yours

  * how up to date the DRM (radeon.o kernel module) is (the newer
the better)

yours, I copied radeon.o to my modules

KNOPPIX is older, so why is it faster?

  * whether page flipping (Option EnablePageFlip, only in 4.2.99.x
or later) is enabled (page flipping is faster)
  * the AGP transfer rate (beware, anything more than 1x may be
unstable) and whether AGP fast writes (Option AGPFastWrite)
are enabled (may again be unstable)

How do I do that? I didnt find anything in man pages nor in

Just in case you have not seen any of my posts on the no/distorted
display after suspend problem, there is a work-around.

Switch to a character display (CTRL-ALT-F2)
Turn off the display (usually Fn-F3 on ThinkPads)
Turn display on (Any key)
Switch back to X (Alt-F9 on FreeBSD, maybe something else on your OS)

To avoid the problem, switch to a character display before suspending.

Maybe BIOS will fix this some day or someone will come up with a
work-around.

Yes, 4.2.1 didn't support page flipping yet. I have no idea why it would
be so fast. :)

It was probably luck that it ever worked in the first place. Apart from
the workarounds someone else mentioned, you could try Option DRIReinit
with xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk or Charl P. Botha's DRI resume patch.

(Also make sure that /dev/apm_bios works so the X server log contains
lines like

(II) Open APM successful

)

 2) still: what was I doing wrong with standard xfree. then I go back to it.

I don't understand what you mean here.

 3) how do I go back. is it safe to remove the packages?

Yes,

apt-get install xlibmesa3-gl xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk-

should get you back where you were before.

PS: About GL_POINT_SIZE, AFAIR the driver simply doesn't support that
(check the dri-devel archives).

[XFree86] Thinkpad A31 and Radeon Mobility 7500

2003-02-18 Thread Dominik Szczerba
Hi,

I have a problem on my IBM TP A31 running debian/unstable 2.4.20. Most
(but not all!!) OpenGL commands dont work. Just black screen effect.
GL_LINES and GL_POINTS work for example, but GL_TRIANGLES and more
complex commands won't work.

Is it something to do with libGL* stuff? So will newer XFree version help?

What's the stage of development for Radeon 7500 in current CVS version?

Thanks a lot,
Dominik

Yes, this is an xlibmesa3-gl problem (which has been reported several
times to the Debian BTS), the code is probably too old to build
correctly with the sid toolchain.

http://penguinppc.org/~daniels/README or
http://dri.sourceforge.net/snapshots/README.Debian should work.

What's the stage of development for Radeon 7500 in current CVS version?

It's very well supported.

Re: [XFree86] Thinkpad A31 and Radeon Mobility 7500

2003-02-18 Thread Dominik Szczerba
Hi,

Thanks a lot for hints. Here is the report:

1) I installed xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk and xlibmesa-gl1-dri-trunk
from http://people.debian.org/~daenzer/dri-trunk-sid/. I didnt find the
mentioned xlibmesa3-dri-trunk.

2) I installed drm-trunk-module-src package, but havent built it - I
have no idea about it nor about kernel-package...

OK, I rebooted and... new login window

I CANNOT LOGIN EVEN AS ROOT

Switched to console, logged normally (uf, worked) and did startx. So
I will get it fixed somehow myself, no problem.

glxgears reported first over 1000 fps but also:

libGL error: InitDriver failed

and screwing up a bit my machine (display is slooow, windows are messed
up a bit).

Starting it the second time reported 100 fps only consistent with
other GL apps, which also are very slow The error is there, apps
are working, but very slow.

What is wrong? Is it is this drm-trunk-module-src that I didnt built? If
yes, then please, one word how to build it...

thank you!
Dominik

2003-02-18 Thread Dominik Szczerba
Hi,

I just discovered that on knoppix debian-on-cd all works fine and very
fast (glxgears give 1.2kfps!!!):

knoppix@ttyp1[knoppix]$ XFree86 -version

This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way. Bugs may be reported to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and patches submitted
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
(http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs)

***

XFree86 Version 4.2.1.1 (Debian 4.2.1-4 20021123003806
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 18 October 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.18 i686 [ELF]
Module Loader present

So what's going on here, they use even older version that I HAD (I used
your patches)...? So maybe the problem can be fixed more elegantly
without the mesa patches? What am I doing wrong? Now, after the patches
I get very slow results and the windows system slows down...

regards,
Dominik

I very much apologize for my ignorance on kernel-package stuff. I just
compiled the modules myself, and brute-force copied radeon.o into my
/lib/modules. IT WORKS! No more errors, no unstabilities (well,
still I cant login, I have to kill login window, login via console and
 then startx).

If you're still using my packages, have you read
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk/README.Debian ?

Keep in mind though that my packages are bleeding edge DRI CVS
snapshots, you may prefer to use Daniel Stone's 4.2.99.x packages.

However, I get 20% less acceleration than with (older?) knoppix XFree...
glxgears give exactly 1kfps (0.1 before), while knoppix reports 1.2kfps.
It is not disaster, but I am just ambitious: why did it all happen, and
how/if could it have been avoided with normal sid xfree... and still,
 why is knoppix faster?

Not sure. First of all, are you sure you haven't mixed up the 'frames in
5 seconds' and FPS values? I ask because it's an easy mistake, and 1200
frames in 5 seconds would be 440 fps, which is about what I'd expect
from 4.2.x .

Something else to keep in mind is that people have been bitten by BIOS
CPU throttling 'features', which might only trigger with newer DRI
components because the use of interrupts decreases CPU usage (set
RADEON_NO_IRQS=1 to test this).

Here's a list of the major components having an influence on glxgears
framerate, roughly sorted by relevance:

  * how up to date radeon_dri.so is (the newer the better)
  * how up to date the DRM (radeon.o kernel module) is (the newer
the better)
  * whether page flipping (Option EnablePageFlip, only in 4.2.99.x
or later) is enabled (page flipping is faster)
  * the AGP transfer rate (beware, anything more than 1x may be
unstable) and whether AGP fast writes (Option AGPFastWrite)
are enabled (may again be unstable)

YMMV depending on the status of each of these.

For your reference, I get 1400-1500 fps on this PowerBook G4/667 with a
Radeon 7500 Mobility running at AGP 4x with fast writes using my
packages.
