But Ralph has never expected to win, so whether he can get anything done is not a deal-breaking matter. He's campaigning to bring attention to issues that he thinks are too important to ignore. He did say in direct response to the question a couple days ago whether he would be effective in office, however hypothetically, that he would be, claiming he's been in D.C. for forty years and knows how to generate support for an issue.
I do not believe Frank would be a Nader man, incidentally.
Mark

FZ once said, "If you can't work within the system for change, you're just playing with yourself until the next new face comes along." Our boy Ralph has no ties within a system he's been fucking with for the last 40 years.
Does that comment bring this on topic?

Re: [Zappa-List] Re: US elections and Florida - dumb all overagain

2004-10-29 Thread SOFA

As a 'practical conservative' (not a liberal, sorry; plenty of liberal
leanings, but just not quite there), and one who voted Nader last time, I'm not
pissed at Ralph for what happened last go-round.
Jeb, yeah, I'm pissed at him. The way the courts were halted, yeah I'm
pissed about that. But I don't blame Ralph...
However, I'm not pleased with Ralph - especially his comments regarding
Bush as a superior politico (when we all know he means "well connected"). I'm
not a fan of John Kerry, but I'm willing to let him prove himself - over another
4 years of W. I know his logic, appeal to the conservatives, but that aint gonna
cut it this time. He made a statement 4 years ago, a statement both parties
chose to ignore. The disaffected conservatives aren't going to cast their votes
for Ralph again. This time around, a vote for Ralph (no matter how
idealistically intended) IS a vote for W.
I'd personally like to see Ralph in Government. Office of Homeland
Whistle-blowing... The Republicans, with their ties with Corporate America and
the Military/Industrial Complex would never give him the time of day. The Dems
might - tho' not likely. He could court the Dems, get a platform where he could
actually do some good, but he won't. Without some kind of backing via the Dems,
or other major party, he's pissin' in the wind.
Just like Carter. If you discount the the bumbled Hostage Rescue mission,
he was not a bad administrator. But he wouldn't play Washington's game and -
therefore - he got nothing done. You can't waltz into Washington and announce,
"Okay, guys, I'm in charge now", and expect anyone to listen. Were Ralph elected
(of course, I'm being hypothetical; I'm not stupid), he would be able to
accomplish very, very little. One guy cannot undo the shit that our government
has done without some major clout. And Ralph has none.
Goddam idealism...
We had the chance - 32 years ago - but we blew it. The problem with
idealism is it's just not practical.
(gets off soapbox)
Sorry if I bored anyone.
FZ once said, "If you can't work within the system for change, you're

I agree it could be a good thing in the long run. It seems ridiculous that here in the twenty-first century voting fraud is so easily possible. Some of the newer computerized voting machines are even less reliable and un-checkable. Some communities have sent back their Debold machines because they don't create any kind of paper trail or backup that would allow a recount. It boggles my mind to think about it. I think it should be set up so that a voter can log onto a website and double check his/her vote and see that it was counted as intended. I guess that would present potential problems with the secrete ballot thing though. There must be some way the system could be redone. Perhaps we could be given a receipt with a long number that would be detached from a corresponding paper ballot or spit out of the machine to anonymously verify our votes with? I would even be willing to give them a few extra days to count the vote if I could just be sure that fraud would be imposable or at least less likely. As the worlds oldest functioning democracy / republic ( or so I'm told ) it's embarrassing that we can't know for sure that an election is honest. After all it's not just the presidential vote. We count on the congress to provide the checks and balances on the president (very important at times) and they are still elected directly by the people.

[Zappa-List] Re: US elections and Florida - dumb all over again

2004-10-29 Thread Andrew Hale

I'll admit I am a Nader supporter. I'd like to see America in the hands, or at
least with a figurehead that is a consumer advocate. I like to think he'd
continue to expose political and commercial corruption if elected, and I'd love
to see Boosh impeached. Problem is Nader/Camejo's platform seems too
idealistic to most. The solution is there he'd just need to get the rest on board,
which sadly would probably prove fruitless. I mean superficially, I certainly
don't make 50 grand a year and I'd appreciate a tax break. I'm on board with
nearly, if not all Nader has to say. I really wish your statement about voting for
Nader wasn't true, but it probably is.

"Revolutionaries always spoil corrupt systems" - indeed.

Well, I don't dislike Nader. His ideas are good ones, but in the grand
scheme of things he is not helping the situation by running. Every
vote for Nader is a vote for Bush. It's as simple as that. Inflamed? I
am totally digusted at this shitstorm.

I cannot take the polls seriously. Especially when you look at where
they are coming from...

The really fucked up thing about this is we may not really know who
actually won for a few days to a week. Do not get your hopes up. I
have a feeling this is going to be worse than 2000. Of course I hope
not, but this administration will stop at nothing to win, and it won't
be fairly.

What truly confounds me is how close the race is between Boosh and
Kerry...and how they just ignore Nader as if he's not there. I mean there are
people this time, who usually don't vote, voting against Boosh, just to oust him
and it's still neck and neck. Damn. The Boosh lackeys were caught last time
discounting the the black vote...and got away with it, and it's going to happen
again...Boosh is the evil prince.

Sorry to flare up off topic like this. I''ve just been a little inflamed at the moment
here at work. A poor sucker working among the wealthy republican crust that
develops between the elephant's toes. Hard to see daylight.

2004-10-29 Thread Jim L

I'll be voting. Planning to be there
when the polls open to avoid the rush.

What I want to know is what if bush
does win by an actual majority in the popular vote? I've been preparing myself
mentally for that one because the tracking polls of likely voters are looking
like it could go that way.

It doesn't surprise me one bit. This election will be a
defying momentfor the American people. If we have another 2000 type
scenario, andthe people do not revolt then we are truly "dumb all
over."I just want to know, how many of YOU are going to vote?

Isn't it almost surreal? I cannot believe this shit. How a man who wasn't even
elected in the first place is going to be president without being elected again.
Eff'n amazing, how he continually escapes impeachment.

[Zappa-List] US elections and Florida - dumb all over again

2004-10-29 Thread Danny ODare

Yep, it's Groundhog Day the sequel:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3960679.stm

Of course, it is just a coincidence that these 58,000 votes go missing in Florida, where Dubya's cousin in is charge. Just a coincidence that they go missing in a strongly Democratic Party area of Florida. Just a coincidence that they go missing in an election which is almost cetainly going to go to the wire. Looks like, again, the lawyers and the Supreme Court (which, by just a coincidence, is solidly reactionary/conservative/Republican) are going to decide who is going to be the next US president and the fate of the world (especially Iraqis).
